Backstory (still open to improvement)

Year 2034. The world oil reserves are running out and a new World War approaches for the last oil spots on the planet. Anticipating a war the US military services began on 2010 a secret researching program with the aim of develop a super advanced marine – the subject matter: Robert Maxwell. A genetically improved human male, created and raised by the government and trained to be a perfect soldier and a assassin.

Part of the program investigation was focused on anger- a common human emotional state to fight an aggression. The heart rate rises, the blood pressure and adrenaline concentrations increases and the individuals feels less pain with increased strength and power. The program scientists, with genetic engineering, amplified the effects of anger on the human body, leading to an invincible and uncontrollable state.

The first results on R. Maxwell were fantastic. With his intensive military training, increases strength and stamina, the anger effects were even greater then expected. Unfortunately the long term effects of anger on the human brain were hard to control and one year after initiating R. Maxwell on the anger experiment he suffered significant hallucinations and paranoid. His anger was uncontrollable, the more rage he had the more powerful he got. The anger program was discontinued and Maxwell was highly sedated and caged.

On 2031 R. Maxwell was saved by a team of super-heroes that have been fighting injustice and crime for long. With the support and help of his new mates, Maxwell learnt how to control his powers, and use them to help the others. Unfortunately, once he gets in a state o uncontrollable anger with an unstopping will for revenge….

Hi, this is my first challenge at Pixolator and actually the first time I post some artwork here. Since the very first time i read the brief I thought what you was a classic american comic hero.

Even with my extremly difficulty to draw/paint and even bigger difficulty to invent a new character I did a few tests and finally got this. The aim is a simple outfit so I can go far with the anatomy and pose.

Anyway, I'm using Zbrush all the way. First time I'm using Zspheres so this will be a great learning process. Hope to post some updates soon.

Just for the fun, this was my first idea:

Thanks for stoping by SolidSnakexxx.

Well as I said I'm trying Zbrush all the way, so did a first Zsphere test, and start blocking out the proportions and shapes. Next step -> Retop.

Thanks for comenting Drakelot

Well here we go to the fun part! Did the retopology, divided him on different polygroups for easier sculping, and did the first pass on the head.

I'm liking how it is turning out. Still need to fix a couple more stuff but I can say the basic stuff is done. Any comments and critics are highly welcome at this point :D

6.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27120632%27,%276.jpg%27,1,0%29)

And well, I'm starting the body sculpting now.

Make him angry! Where's the rage?
It may be a cliche but eyes so far apart are more apt for a reflective and kind person, I'd pull them closer to each other.

Firebert
01-06-09, 01:14 PM
looks rad. very chiseled look. totally digging it.

watch out for those neck muscles. they just need some refinement where they move from the front to the back. reconsider the shape of the eyes as well and the weight of the fat in the sockets. they look a tad far apart right now as well.

VitorFerreira
01-07-09, 12:37 PM
Firerbert -> Thanks for commenting ;) I think the neck is better now after some more work on it. And yes the eyes still need some work. On this update didn't change much the head. Will get on it next.

maxinkuk -> Thanks dude. Yes, he dosen't seem angry so far. I avoided it on purpose as modeling a expression right now would make it harder to give him some personality I think. Well at least it would hide most of the face features. Will get on the face expression on the posing work.

And here is today's update.

7.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27120850%27,%277.jpg%27,1,0%29)

wow, really. this is a nice concept.
and the sculpt begins really nice!

but i have to say, i liked the other had more than the second.
even if it doesn't fit the concept so well... just my opinion.
anyway, both are nice!!

you are really doing one heck of a job, mate. i think i can learn a few things from you and your detailing in anatomy. mind giving me pointers, lol. keep it up. :tu:

Blastamon
01-07-09, 03:57 PM
I like the form he is taking already. The stomach has this carved out of stone look to it right now that looks cool.

VitorFerreira
01-07-09, 04:14 PM
Thanks a lot for the comments, it really helps me keep going.

Firerbert -> Well thanks ;)

wethand -> Thanks for commenting dude. Sorry but I'm not sure I understood it right. You say you prefer the other concept, the girl one?

leandroloaiza -> Thanks dude! Hope you will like it in the end.

dustbin1_uk -> Thanks man ;)

Gohanf22 -> Cool, glad you are liking it man! Well i don't deny I love anatomy myself. For pointers... uhm.. practise, practise :D oh and references and books... and time, lots of time

Blastamon -> Thanks! Yes the hard edged look is something I'm trying to achieve, it gets a look of a comic character I think.

And I think I'm done with it for today . Worked some more on the body, the basic stuff is all blocked out, except the hands. Now I'll just fix a couple bugs (something is not looking right, not sure if it is the proportions or the pose) and start detailing it.

Firebert

I think what you are referring to in something not looking right is quite a few things with your muscle proportions. For the most part, your entire upper body section is too low. Pecs should come up a bit... draw a rib cage on him in photoshop and visualize it that way in comparison to a real skeleton. The transition from obliques to the lats is off and instead of feeling like there is muscle surrounding the rib cage, you have a big mass build up in the back. Your scapula are way to close to the spine. There needs to be room for the trapezius, and from the back view, the trapezius has a good form, but from the front, it has this lump feel like a big sausage was stuck up there. Think about how each muscle connects and how they taper or widen in those areas. Hope this helps in seeing some areas with a fresh view. I know I get so wrapped up in my models that I don't see things other people would notice right off the bat.

Moni-Poroni -> Thanks. I'm trying my best and this is actualy a terrible week. I got a neurology/neurocirurgy exam tomorrow morning

gang -> Thanks for coming by mate!

Firerbert -> Thanks for the critics dude. I agree with you on most of the points. There are some areas that I actually prefer like it is, but well, that doesn't mean your are not right

SolidSnakexxx -> The topology master him self! Thanks for commenting man.

petekasim -> Sorry but I don't think that was me. But hope you like my work too haha

And as I have an exam tomorrow at university i don't think i'll be able to work on it today.

Awesome Model so far man. I like the concept as well.

I agree with what's been said about the chest so far. I can't place my finger on whats off but something seems out of proportion. I think that he looks muscular and cut enough but something about the pecs descending so low makes them look less "tight" than the rest of the muscles.

Keep up the awesome work!

cfree68
01-09-09, 02:36 PM
Ok.. I looked a second time and I think I see what makes it look off. Its the vertical height of his pecs and shoulders. its like he stretches out there a bit. you could leave the bottom of the pecs where they are and just bring the shoulders and head down a smidge.

Just my two cents though ;-)

canndis

Thanks for the comments.

cfree68 -> Yes I think you are right. There is something odd on the propotions as I said but i couldn't put my finger either. I've changed it now, what you think? Keep in mind I'm not going for a completly realistic look, more a comic character look.

canndis and Y/Haüss -> Thanks, glad you like it ;)

Real nice update there VitorFerreira, I think the proportion is good he looks really tall and heroic. :tu:

maxinkuk
01-11-09, 09:06 AM
I think it's very good, maybe a slight imbalance towards the upper side, torso a bit too bulky compared to the legs. Legs could also be slightly longer, but not much, unless he'll be wearing shoes with some heel.
You could try to move his arms towards the back so that one can see the waist from the side, at present it's covered by the arms, so difficult to say what he is like from that angle.
Top sculpt though. As said before, very believable.

Nice anatomy and proportions. I like the balance between the shapes with the focus on the big chest! comming along very nice!

Well, the weekend wasn't half productive as I thought... it was my vacations afterall, who can blame me? haha the excuse is not good enought for lazyness :D At least I got it at this point. Just left a couple minor tweaks here and there, and perhaps redo completly the hands. But I'm starting the suit for now.

hey vitor!

great work. i really like where this is going.
i especially like his face. not sure if the whole his torso area is too big? -maybe a little imo.
keep up the great work.

01-12-09, 02:37 PM
i like it gj :tu: then only downside is that if you have ever looked at a body builder their pecs are the parts of their body that stick out the most, in your model it looks like there is a indentation but the stomach comes out to the pecs level. other then that i have to say gj and you are doing and awesome job

SolidSnakexxx
01-12-09, 08:30 PM
Real nice update. The added hair pieces makes him even more complete. :tu:

VitorFerreira
01-13-09, 03:37 PM
Thanks for commenting. Well yea the torso area looks big and not very correct but I actually like it that way. Anyway critics written down and I'll take a better look on it next :tu:

Meanwhile, started the gloves. I been using Zbrush for long but always with basemesh from Max. On this challenge I'm with Zbrush all the way and I'm learning a lot. There is a lot of stuff that I didn't know about. This is how I did the hands basemesh. For other users it can sound noobish but well that wasn't easy here haha :D

13.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27122153%27,%2713.jpg%27,1,0%29)

Some more work on it, and color test (looking very crap so far) and the lines on the suit need more detail, otherwise are hardly noticiable.

Nice anatomy and face. I don't know if your going to put the red down the front of the torso like in the original sketch but I do like it around the shoulders. Seems unique and diversely iconic.

How would the red on the shoulders look if cut back a bit?
Maybe for his suit or physique? Maybe a slight deviation from the lines in back? I like that back. Nice accents.

goldo_O -> Thanks man! Glad you are liking it!

grassetti -> Hey Grassetti, been in love with your work for long now. Muito obrigado then! Thanks for your paint over too, been thinking it looks too wide, but I don't want it too slim too. Will probable get half the way you did on the paintover.

AVTPro -> Hey thanks a lot. The red is just experimental, and damn I love that one you did. Will probable use it if you don't mind :tu:

snoopalu -> Ty dude!

Drakelot-> Thanks man. Hey did you hang around 3dtotal forums a few years ago? I think I remeber someone with that name back then ;)

nightwoodwolf -> Thanks mate.

SolidSnakexxx-> Thanks SolidSnake! Yes I think the lines add some movement to it.

Trurl -> Thanks dude ;)

animastur -> Thanks, glad you are liking it.

Gohanf22 -> Thanks. Yes I'll use this one. The first one just shows how much I suck on 2d :D

JUPITER -> Thansk. I'll try me best to :D

This character is turning out really nicely. I was looking at your thread, and like a few others, could not figure out what was not quite right with the proportions. But I think Grassetti's paintover got it. Even if you don't go quite so slim, what Grassetti did with the hip/abdomen area looks right.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on this one.

Ha ha! So you're not the same Vitor I met at escape... he was from Portugal too, and actually had a very similar style when it came to 3D modelling! Strange coincidence... :)

I actually had a chance to check out your webpage, I love your characters, man! And your hero looks great. I saw a couple of people had suggestions regarding the proportions, but I gotta say, I like your proportions - unconventional, but there's a real style there! I say go with your heart

Best of luck as you continue :tu:

VitorFerreira
01-17-09, 08:35 AM
Gohanf22 -> Thanks mate. But I really need some more practise on 2D.

herekitty -> Yes, the proportions are off. I'm trying to achieve a mid way look between what it is now and what grassetti painted.

canndis -> Thanks. Glad you are liking it.

dustbin1_uk -> Thanks mate.

petekasim -> Hey. Ahaha i thought so, at least i don't remember been on that school :D And glad you liked my previous works. Don't know if this is the one you saw: http://vitorferreira.wordpress.com (http://vitorferreira.wordpress.com/) . It is outdated as hell but it is the lastest one. Thanks Gohanf22. But dude! giving up is not a good choise. I understand and actually agree Zbrush isn't the right step to start with. You will probably win more by learning proportions and form on pencil, or perhaps low poly modeling but you also will win by changing of actittude and improve your reaction to critic. :tu:

Well, some more quick tweaks on the pose test. I'd did a couple more tests with diferent poses, but this is actually what I like most. I'm still researching, and any suggestions are higly valuable.

Did a couple new pose tests and this is the one I like best. Thanks to SolidSnake for the tip of movie builtin in Zbrush ahaha I really didn't know about that. This is so much easier to upload videos on the web. I just have to fix the quality now. Does anyone has some goods sittings and not some huge a few thousands mb files...

Hey there Vitor!

Loving the progress here, you've maintained some great anatomy and I love his chiselled face :tu:

As for poses, I prefer the running pose - I think it looks perfect. The takeoff doesn't look quite right... his mid-section is twisted in a strange way.

The front angle looks okay, actually, but looking from the back shows an unnatural twist going on in his lower spine, and the middle one looks a bit odd, like he is twisted too far.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing how this progresses, the sculpt is absolutely superb and has the potential to be something really special :)

Thanks a lot Jupiter and Petekasim ;)

I'd went with the running pose. I like it more too. Did some detailing today on it. It will be a hard race to the end, as I'm starting surgery classes on school and free time is not much :(

Definitely the running pose. I hear you on the free time! I'm finding it hard to find time to work on my entry too and I'll bet many others are also so you're not alone. Keep going. It's looking great ;)

Thanks for commenting Captain Sensible and Moni-Poroni. Glad you like the pose. And hell yes, meeting the deadline won't be easy :\

Some more work I did today. I hope I can really work on this a lot on the weekend.

Much better movement in the torso. The red design is spot on.

Damn, I always get late on this competitions. I really want to finish this, but I don't have time to make it perfect. I know working like this is a bad habit. Anyway, some more work I did today. I'm new to Zbrush materials and render sistem. Any tips and tricks are really welcome as well general criticims on scene.

I'm more for a action hero toy look then a realistic rendering...

Hello,

Unfortunatly I don't have enought time to finish this for good, so I make it at least presentable for a final entry and I'm closing this one. I'd love to have some more time to improve it, but with all the work I've on university it isn't possible. I had such a great time on this challenge, learnt a lot really, making everything in Zbrush isn't easy.

So, hope you like it as much as I liked to create him. Not perfect as it should be, as I said, but it was great fun. Everything is Zbrush made, no meshes used from other aplications, and just used photoshop for the final composition, the rest is all Zbrush work.
