Artist - Jan Daniel
villains original Name: Project F57
Background:
It was back in 1987 when they did it. The scientists were successful in crossing fishes and humans dna.
There were 2000 test tadpoles. the scientists waited and watched them growing... and die off.
after twenty years there was one left. but it wasn't a tadpole anymore. it was a fish with arms and legs like a human. over the years the scientists saw the brain growing. the half of the fish was pure brain. But the fish never moved. it never moved for the twenty years.
the scientists just thought, the fish wasn't done yet. But for the last ten years it was in it's huge test-tube thinking about life. it just didn't move, because it didn't want to. why? you have to eat, to drink. And all it could do was thinking about life.
after 20 years he came up with an idea. the point of life was to spread out your sperm and have children... maybe a family.
but the most important thing: to spread out your dna.
so the fish broke out the laboratory to the next river. there he found out, that the scientists made him impotent. poor fish.
he became angry. very angry. he hated human kind.
one year long he robed many banks and saved the money for his big revenge. Now he gets ready to show human kind what it means to be a fish.
Special Forces:
Hyper-Intelligence: (Human DNA: Big Brain / Fishes DNA: protein) Mr. Fish has such a big brain. so he can remember all things, can think logical in seconds and can manipulate people. He is ugly, but he can speak nicely. just because his big brain all people surrounding him love him.
fast swimmer: yeah, i was thinking about give him the ability to fly.... no. i mean, this is a fish. so he can swim very fast and he can breath under water. but thanks to human dna: he doesn't need it. He has lounghes (i don't know where... maybe in the legs)
His outfit: He wanted something, that fits his color. i don't know why he has chosen red. but under water, where he flees from police it is cold. so he need something to warm up.... and the hat. i think, he thought he would look smart with a cylinder.
personal note:
action hero contest... yeah, just another competition i would like to participate. but i don't think to have a chance. thats why i didn't make a very serious concept. i think its all about fun.
i don't even know if this is a action hero.
and the worst thing is: ACTION POSE? omg. if i finish the model... what could be a action pose for a hyper-intelligent, bored FISH? jumping right into the water? yeah... this could work... :P
EDIT: yeah, i was thinking a long time about this theme. i came up with NOTHING serious. so i just thought about the most untypical heroic character. the idea of the fish was born. AFTER that i wrote the background story... in 10 minutes... in germany you would say "spontane kreativität". so, it was.... uhm... spontaneous creativity! :P
hope you like the idea

hey there...
thanks for the comments.
now my first progress-pic. just some ZSpheres. nothing to say. maybe just one thing: i don't think the basemesh is relevant if you work with zbrush on a good machine.... everyone knows, that there are masters who sculpt awesome stuff right out of a sphere...
but it makes things easier... this zspheres. :)
after having the basemesh the real fun begins!!
but i dunno, maybe i'll make a new one (seperate meshes for the fish-body and the human arms and legs... but only maybe, if this mesh doesn't work)

Looks like the ZSphere construct is ready and in a good shape for sculpting. A brief glance of the silhouette, reminds me of the korean terror monster, the Host with humor (The hat), this is going to be cool :tu:

reminds me of the fish in sponge bob! :D

@ dustin: lol, yeah, you are right. if you say that it reminds me, too. :P
but thats because all fishes have this sad-looking face.
here the first sculpting-hour and i already see some critical areas.... but hey, it's all about fun, isn't it? ^^

thanks guys! very kind words! :)
so, here's my further progress...
now it's on subdiv lvl 4 with 69,122 polys.
I'm startin' to feel this guy... and i think, i'm gonna like him ^^
last post for today.... i mean, i will work on him, but i hate it to see so many progress-pics out of one single thread in the bar on the top... :o

testpose.... i'm thinking about make him running away from police. he robed a bank and has a bag full of money in the right, and his hat in the left hand. he' is jumping right into the water, like i said.
the other are updates...
hope you like this idea...

He's great!!!
He's a truly great character, I think that there's a very real risk that it becomes a classic like the Penguin or the Octopus.
And to make things better in the front view the shadow of his belly produces an indecent shape! What more can you do at this stage to define a character that wants to spread his DNA?
An heroic effort so far.:tu::tu::tu:

couldnt resist to post my last updates... ^^
i cant remember i had ever so much fun when i sculpted
so, i just think about his dress... i wanted to give him such a knitted thing. but now the idea appears to give him a small latex dress. i just dunno... i'll try it both. i mean, i don't work at the moment... -.-
both ideas are funny ^^
and i decided to give him such a fish-mustache. it underlines his gangster-boss apperiance...
so, good night everyone :P

I agree with maxinkuk about the comparison to the Penguin. But that's a good thing. I like the pose where he's holding onto his hat. For me the hat gives him a lot of character and is really selling it to me. He looks real fun to sculpt and I think you could do some interesting things with skin folds. Some good work so far. Keep us updated! :tu:

hey there,
many thanks for your very nice words! its motivating me! thanks!!! =)
@ Hamilcar, yeah, i know what you mean. but that was the look i was after. i think it underlines his stupidity! and stupidity is my favorite style of humor.... ^^
so, here are some minor updates. first color scheme and the sculpted dress.
i think it fits him nice! :P he looks SO stupid ^^ i think the color is ok. only the scheme, the final texture comes later, when i am done sculpting...
but at first i will try to sculpt his final bag full of money and his hat.
so, heres my progress so far:

hi there,
thank you all so much for your nice replys! thanks.
i didn't think about the eyes so far... this guy is developing by his own... i'm just his instrument. :P
the texturing and the whole color is just provisional. all together it took me 10 minutes to paint him.
now he has already 4,5 mio polys. i would love to detail his face further... i dunno, i think all together the face is ok... i never saw a fishes anatomy scheme, so it's all my imagination.... something between a frog and a fish.
here is my progress so far... i tried to detail his arms like old, fishy skin, but i think its to much. maybe i'll try to achieve such an skin like a drown person.... oh hey, i didn't think about THIS so far... and i think that could be funny and i'll try it.
the face is ok so far, but the arms need a rework... this details suck and the idea with the drown-body-skin on his arms is much better, i think... hard texture work -.- thats not my streinght...
sorry for that long post. but like i said, this guy is developing at the time i sculpt it and this is a tricky part... this detail thing =/
and i ever forget the movie-making!!! damn! last time i wondered why zbrush asked me TWO times to save the document.... no, one was the movie i forgot to export... =(
now i didn't forget it. the making of hat... :P just short transpose and retopo action...

By the way, thanks for that hat vid, it's always good to see people's individual techniques. Gave me some ideas!

hey there,
thanks for your comments!
so far, so good. at this stage (4,5 mio polys only the guy) i think about retopo him. the head is done. VERY dense mesh... and it was complicated.
i just think, if i want to detail him further in his face and on his arms/legs, this areas should be dense. theoretical i don't need the body so i could delete it, but i like him how he is.
theoretical, in my common way, i would clone the mesh, go down to subdiv lvl 1, hide the mesh i don't need (the body).
this destroys your levels, so level up again, append the cutted, not anymore detailed mesh to my original mesh and project the details. that would keep the performance and give the ability to detail.
but hey, i never gone so far in a challange, so i'll try to retopo him and keep it clean. only quads, and one, closed mesh (head, arms and legs WITH the body.
maybe i was too correct in retopo the head. but better this way, than having a problem later.
and i decided to give him fish-scales. nothing more, just simple scales. made with an alpha.
i made a progress-video for the topology part. i hope youtube doesn't kill it, when uploading. it isn't finish right now, so i will edit this post later.
but here are my pics:

He's looking good, but I want his hands to be a bit more massive than they are compared to the head. Plus his midsection needs some work, the fat 'paunch' needs a bit more mass and doesn't look like real fat to me.
Great concept!

hi there guys,
thank you all alot for your kind replys!
@moni-poroni: thanks! these sweaters look nice. but the technique (link (http://zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=65108&page=3&highlight=pattern)) isn't zbrush only (i used 3ds max, but just for the uv). Ill try to achieve this effect using just zbrush. (maybe a cylinderical mapping... who knows). anyway, this right now is just a placeholder...
@ maxinluk: thanks man. i thought so, too. you won't be disappointed ;)
@ markrulz: many thanks mate! i'll try this directly! but the fat... under the shirt... maybe, if i have the fun (the time is there. workless right now... WOHOOW, time for sculpting, lol)
thanks lucky! i appreciate that!
@ jack daniels: maybe i am stoned everytime i see him, too.... maybe thats, why this is a fish...
@ Hamilcar: thanks alot. it is a little bit to fast.
and here is my progres... after i saw SolidSnakexxx Thread (http://zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?p=520530#post520530) i realized that i had to rework the topology... =( and the movie is crap, too. =((
anyway, i use my second attempt. and THANKS to solidsnake... teached me alot without teaching me... :P
sorry, that i have nothing further... but i played with compression methods for the mov of the topology-process....
a record of a topology process... =( how stupid ... this little lines in youtube-resolution
edit: i see this little pentagon in his eye... but there will be the... eye ^^

so, here is my retopo progress. i dont know if this was such a good idea.... the body is still so dense. and if it is visible, it doesn't need any details... such a catch-22... if im going further like this, it will be the same result like i did nothing...
i'm a little bit helpless right now... i think, i kill the retopo and sculpt with 17mio polys.... but on the other hand this is bull****, too.
-.-'
i'll see, what i'll do
edit: you see, the topological aspect of modeling... the technical aspect of zbrush... is damn difficult.
the new topology i made sux. if someone has a good reference-sheet for human (?) topology, pls let me know... something like that would be helpful

Yeah retopoing is the unfun part of making characters. I think most of your character is simple enough to not have to pressure yourself so much over it.
I wouldnt worry so much about following polygons around the fat rolls and dimples and things. Just go for a nice grid around the joints so he bends nice and easy.
As for a good reference check out that hulk thread here http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=60245
His retopo is very clean...mostly horizontal and vertical polys, very effective.

Looking good so far man. And man, How honor I am that you mentioned my name in your thread regarding retopology. For me, although it's not the funnest part of ZBrush, it does for me hold a special importance as it allows me to be ply conscious and just in case the model's to be used outside of ZBrush universe.
Look forward for more great Fish from you. :)

01-08-09, 12:17 AM
hi there,
at first, thanks! i reworked the body topology again! phew. but never concentrated so much on topology, so i am learning SO much right now.
@Blastamon: many many manyyy thanks for the link! it is a great help.
and yeah, you are right saying this is simple enough to not overpressure myself.
@Y/Haüss: oh man, thanks for this! its great to see people like mr. fish! :)
@ SolidSnake: I AM honored you write in my thread! ;) i want to use mr. fish only in zbrush. but like you said: Polygon efficiency! making weighting values for the detailing part. i think, this is really important even on a fast machine. 17 mio polys is to much to work comfortable but right now the body has to much polys compared with the head. i mean, this guy is wearing a sweater, so you don't even see the body.
here is my new, and hopefully last attempt to topologize him. i think this is near to the optimum:

thanks!!! :)
a little story (typical me):
one minute ago i went to get some coffee... i place the coffee, like everytime, on my left side. my tablet lies on my right side... now you can imagine? i am so talented that i kick the cup of coffee (big cup, 0,5 liters) so hard, that it flies from my left to my right side and ALL OVER THE TABLET!!! AAAAARGH! my good bamboo. i directly unplug it and clean it... but i know, such an amount of coffee penetrates my tablet... :(
so, i think, and come up with the idea: rotate the tablet centrifugally. so, my whole room now is sprayd with coffee, but the tablet works without a handicap... thanks to wacom for that quality... i just hope that there wont be a handicap if the rest of coffee inside the tablet drys out...
just a little story about my daily life... sometimes i think, i am clumsy..
i think, i need a coffee and a cigarette right now! .... but it works... i thank god.

hey there,
after i had some things to do i had time to end the retopo and try to detail the head a little bit.
i have to say, the new topology works NICE! it was the right decision!
the model now has 3,2 mio polys. in comparison with the 4,5 it had before and the resolution of the head its definetely better.
i'm just trying. i think the horn-plate thing looks right, even with the hat.
i think the details in the face are ok. i'm not the best in detailing, like you see in the vid.
i think the face isn't the best right now... i don't know if i try to rework the skin. let me know, what you think...
i'll post the vid as soon its up.

Hey nice movie, and funny song. Fishman is look'n better every day.
Just a note to your re-topo work. I was working with the topo tool today and I noticed you can draw some fairly large polys and even leave areas unfinished and adaptive skin can still figure it out and do a pretty good job.

01-08-09, 03:41 PM
hey guys,
and again. many thanks for your comments!!
i watched my own movie. i think this is crap. the quality doesn't work with such fine detailing work...
damn, used this funny song idea for such a crap! -.-
@dustbin; oh yes, the idea of the contest is just great. to see so many techniques is one of the best resources.
and many many thanks for your superkind reply! i appreciate that!
@captain; thanks mate! this is motivating me!
@Hamilcar; yeah, i think i know what you mean. but this results often in tris or pentagons. i try to retopo the complete mesh without a tri. i think thats the cleanest way.
so, here is my last update...
this time a little bit detailing work on the body and the legs. and a new technique.
i've read the rules again and it is important to use only zbrush (and photoshop maybe... anyway, didn't need it until now)
so i tried to make the sweater just in zbrush. you know, you need uv's for that. the technique is described here: Eof's Sketchbook (http://zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=65108&page=3&highlight=pattern)
so you just need uv's. in my case this is just a cylinder, so it's very easy.
and at the end 3 bigger pics. i think, the fish-sculpting part isn't far away from finish.
i have to think about the environment next... never did an environment in zbrush before.
little description:
1. in the preview rotate your model, how you need it. the caps are towards to you and away from you... i'm sorry for that bad english, but i hope you understand.
2. cylinderical uvs.
3. zbrush isnt the best uv tool, so it leaves areas i have to paint the mask manually.
i would like to use the 3ds maxes version.... but maybe i'll try to refine that technique.
progress12_uv.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27121087%27,%27progress12_uv.jpg%27,1,0%29)

or maybe he's jumping from an edge... but into the water! :)
@solidsnake: thanks. i'm glad you like it.
i think this technique is obvious. nothing special, just the proof i did everything in zbrush! :)
and here is some transpose-master practice. just for fun with a vid showing the process.
and a turntable of the pose. i thought it could be fun to make him sitting on his fin.
i don't know if this is believable. but like i said. just practice. i have the time right now.
about the music: i think such videos should have music. you have the option to mute it. but it makes the whole thing a little bit more interesting. now you hear the music i hear in common. chill/ambient/electronic/minimal-house... :) it doesn't matter, how you call it. but it is relaxing, i think.

@dustbin: thank you very much! i'm glad, you like it! :)
@solidsnake: yeah. i also thought, it would either break than holding him. but he is so fat, that he nearly stands when he sits... :P
it was just doodeling. the final pose will be the jumping one.
@moni-paroni: you know. posing isn't such a fun for me... i just wanted to practice. i mean, fat guys posing is difficult... but i am very glad you like it :)
no i didn't start to texture him. i want to finish the sculpting part before texturing him.
@ captainsensible: oh yes, thanks! but that isn't the final pose, so i won't change it anymore.

hey and thanks!!!
nice replys!!! thank you guys!
@petekasim: thank you very much!
@Y/Haüss: thanks man! but if this a film, i don't know him... but thats a mafia fish for real!
@GregStrangis: thanks! glad, you like it!
@SOLcreator: thank you so much!
@Moni-Poroni: thank you, too! of course you can ask every question. yes, the nails are subtools. i went back to level 2 and extruded them. then inflat because there are very thin and then sculpt. i made the mistake to extrude every nail for its own.
i made i vid but when i tried to make1mesh out of the five nails zbrush broke down.
at the feet i directly masked all 5 nails to have just one subtool.
a closeup of the feet is attached...
so, here is my update:
i tried to make a bag for him.
i don't know if this is ok. but for now i'll take it how it is. very dirty sculpting... but hey, its a bag.
the red is wrong i think. but the flowerpattern will be in the final as well!
it has not to much polys like you see.

Man, he's looking good! You're pretty fast too!
For colour - I would experiment adding subtle yellows/pinks to the lighter side. Perhaps break the transition a bit more, make it sharper, with parts of one colour going slightly further in some places, have dots of different colour there too. Also, maybe add some more colour variation to the dark parts?
Modeling is looking pretty good to me - keep going!

the transparenca is faked. right now it is layered in photoshop (one layer WITH the water subtool, the other without... and then blended together)

@jessegraffam: thanks for the hint with the feet. you are completely right. ill make them bigger in the next update.
@solcreator: thank you very much! you WILL see more. :)
and i have got some trickys i often use. i have the problem with the nails. subdiv 4 but i have to mirror it WITH the subdivs!
1. i clone the nails. one at level 1, and one at the highest level.
2. i append both subtools to my original mesh.
3. i del lower and del higher at the subtools, so i have one highres detailed mesh without subdivs and one lowres.
4. at deformation i mirror both subtools.
5. now i hide all subtools but the two appended.
6. for the lowres subtool i devide it to the point, my highres is at.
7. now i press "project all" at the tools palette and tadaaa
you have your subtool WITH the subdivs mirrored.
my second hint is making one mesh with multiple subtools but not destroying your subdivs. i need this one for the little fishis.
1. first of all you need to make one lowres and one highres mesh.
2. you know make1mesh? no? this is a very useful plugin. LINK (http://zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=49952&highlight=make1mesh)
3. so, for my fish i select every subtool and lower the subdiv. after that i hit make1mesh.
4. after that i select every subtool and higher the subdiv. i hit make1mesh.
5. like before i devide the lowres mesh 3-4 times and append the highres mesh to it.
6. now i hit projectall and made one single subtool out of multiple subtools without destroying my subdivs! i need this for posing the fishis. (if they jump out of the water, they would bend)
hope, someone read this... :P
here is the progress: gave him a backfin. i remember a film "freewilly". i thought, such a twisted fin could fit him very well. tell me, what you think!

01-16-09, 02:07 AM
hey there.
with my new subdiv-fishis i can finally bend them and make their jumps a little bit more realistic...
so, i am not far away from finish. mr. fish is textured. his material is nearly done. i think i'll work a little bit further on the water... the texture and the shape... but for now i am done....
if you think something, let me know what it is... :P

01-16-09, 05:11 AM
hey solid,
thanks for this!
i think these "tips" are obvious, but i needed a long time to figure it out... subtool mirroring without destroying subdivs...
some further texture and material work.
i think it becomes better.
now the transparency is fully zbrush. i will tell you how to use it the most efficient way in my next post. ^^
still have to figure out some thinks.
and i still looking for the best light setups. maybe you guys know a little bit more about it, than me.
but if i change the light-type from sun to anything other it seems the light is deactivated. even with the best render setting it doesn't lighten the scene.
i just don't know why these two fishis are so much brighter than the other. maybe i'll figure out.
the whole thing is realy close to be done...
BUT I DON'T WANT TO FINISH THIS ONE!!!! ^^
never came so far with one single concept, never pushed it so hard and never got such a nice feedback on one single thing i did....
maybe i'll make some more funposes...
here is my environment. fully textured... but the wood material isn't the best.

thank you!

Great! The base is brilliant. And the little fishes jumping in anticipation is a great idea. I like how you have contained the water in a block! I would have gone for something more fluid but don't change it!!
Definitely laughing 'with' you man! Great character that's gradually coming more and more to life! :tu:

oh wow! this is fast!
thank you all guys...
just a little update. like Hamilcar mentioned there were barnacles missing
and a little vid. just thought over the fastest way. came up with this. but this doesn't look real.
but i think thats the material....
what you can't see very well in the vid is that i am making an alpha. i attached the alpha.
thank you all so much! :o :o :o

01-18-09, 06:58 AM
hey there!
thanks for your kind replys!!
@ jackdaniels: yeah, working with alphas is one of the most important things in zbrush, i think... :P
@moni: dank'söhr! :P
i worked the base a little bit more.
it seems, zbrush doesn't save the applied materials when i save my tool... that sux...
i completely remade those barnacles.
and i attached an image where you can see the settings i use to make the water a little bit transparent.
a little explanation:
1. at first you need to turn on transparency... :P
2. now select the subtool you want to be transparent.
3. in preferences hit draw. there you can set separate opacitys for the active and for all inactive subtools.
i think this live-out-of-zbrush transparency is very strong! no layering in other apps. that helps me for the final still render i will need for the contest...

hey guys,
pitchepuck: thanks! :P don't know, how to understand it, but thanks anyway :)
maxinkuk: thanks mate! yeah, the drama comes with the pose. i am just finishing the sculpting and texturing process for mister fish. i am not shure about the sweater.
SolidSnakexxx: thanks man! yeah, i dunno how i came to that. i think i just was lucky when i looked through the preferences. :)
Gohanf22: thank you very much!!
Captain Sensible: thank you! :) i can't wait to see it all together, too! :P
GregStrangis: thank you very much! but i think i will have to rework the base, after posing this guy... i think, it would be better if the fishys are there, where he is going to jump in (a little bit more far away from the woods, if you know, what i mean... :) )
mantegra: thanks! :) glad, you like it!
Hamilcar: thanks! but this alpha was so easy to make (like you can see in the vid... :) ) do you mean with something structural such woods which hold the whole thing together? yeah, thats a really good point! thank you for your ideas!!! they help me a lot. i'll work on it!
goldo_O: thank you so much! but the base isn't done so far... i'm working on it... :)
spimmy: many thanks! i think the texturing is done so far... :)
so, here are my newest pics.
about the sweater: i remade it but i am not sure if the "bigger" one is better. but i think i like it a little bit better! and i have it already painted. ;)
it would be nice if you let me know what you think!
and i tried to detail and integrate his backfin a little bit more. i think it looks good like it is. such an old and dirty backfin (it just looks cool, he doesn't need it. if he would need it, he would have a problem... ;) )

Hello there guys,
i tried to pose my fish today.
This was just a transpose master test with all subtools i need for mister fish.
but like you see in the transpose vid i made several mistakes.
and the base needs a lot of rework...
@gohan: ah yeah, really. you wanted to say "hi"? please think about what you are writing before you hit enter.
maybe you know: is my base with HOLES??? in the rules they write "no holes". but is that a real hole? i think so. if that is a hole i need to rethink the whole base, DAMN!!!
here is my progress. all materials aren't final!

where is the hole in your mesh? imho I wouldn't worry about a hole in the mesh, if you win a 3d print you can fix the hole before sending it off to print, thats just my thought tho.

01-20-09, 11:21 AM
thank you guys...
i don't think i will win a 3d print, so why matter about holes...

The holes that must be avoided are another thing altogether, they're holes "in the mesh", like when there are polygons missing and the surface is not closed.

Hi Wethand,
I like the pose you're putting together. My only thought looking at it was the hand that's holding the hat--I just wonder how it might look if instead of that hand being off of his head, it was actually closer to his head and still holding the hat on... right now it looks kind of like he's deliberately removing his hat before diving in the water (which is actually kind of funny, come to think of it!) rather than holding it on his head as he dives in (Indiana Jones-style).
I spose it kinda works either way, heh, but just thought I'd throw that idea out!

wethand best of luck with your application! I have a feeling you'll do great. As for this contest, I personally wouldn't break the update rule Aurick seems to be pretty strict on that one. I would suggest just posting a little something (anything really) to keep from breaking the rule.
The rule about the transpose video, I think maybe you are interpreting it too strictly. I think you already have good Transpose movies of you possing the model which you are using in your final entry.
Just my thoughts :) All the Best :)

The environment is good but I think that some tweaking of the materials could lift it up to a much more believable point.

i think will be the last post before my final entry...
about the algae... i am not sure... with the right material maybe... i'll see and you too :P
yeah, every time the same. but this time i think he holds his hat the best way.... and the opened mouth adds a little bit of dynamic, i think...
hope, you like it
edit: the nails will painted, too... i know the look ****ty... ^^

Hey hey wethand! good to have you back :)
I loved the atmospheric lighting on your portfolio piece :tu:
Had a look at your sketchbook too, you have great imagination. I was terrified by that executioner bunny, pretty disturbing!
The irregular posts on the pier are a great choice, one thing I would suggest (but only if you have the spare time), is that the texturing looks kinda "noisy" at this resolution. The barnacles at the bottom are perfect, but the wood seems almost too detailed. Maybe something simpler would read better?
Either way, this is such an entertaining piece I smile every time I see it. Well done and best of luck!

wethand, man I really like the feel of weight to the last board there....Really really cool. :tu:

Such a brilliant piece! I agree with Peter though, the wood is way too noisy.

wethand really cool update :)
The last board is awesome!
But I have to agree with petekasim + maxinkuk...
The wooden parts are too noisy...maybe IMHO you should make it smoother (in german : glatter ^^ so wie jetzt lenkt das ein bisschen ab...du hast ja schon viele muster drinne. )
And have you tried a darker colour for the wooden parts? More brown and a little bit more shiny ? )
you have much time left to try it out :)
The colours fit together..but maybe it would look good if everything would be more...(farbenfroher;) )
Hope you know what I mean?
best wishes!

hey there,
petekasim: thanks a lot!
and thanks for looking in my sketchbook! :)
thanks for the hint with the texture. i tried to improve it... take a look.. :)
solid: thanks man! yeah, such a fat fish is definetely very heavy :P
maxinkuk: thanks a lot! :) yeah, i changed the texture. many thanks for the post! :)
Moni-Poroni: hey moni. yeah, i tried to make it a little bit... glatter... ^^
the material will be changed for sure! but the color now works, i think. just take a look. :)
do you mean gesättigter? yeah, i don't like such shiny colors... i like this old style... thanks a lot for your help! :)
Agostinuke: thank you very much! glad, you liked it!
Marsyas: thanks a lot. i am not sure about the water... take a look :)
------------------------------
here is my update and my question:
which one is better? with the pool-like base and the logo, or without?
i would give the whole texture an old dirty touch. but for now it was enough... i tried to get as accurate as possible.
i worked with projection master and polygroups. if someone is interested in the progress, let me know.
PLEASE VOTE: with the pool, or not...
tomorrow i'll finally finish this piece.

Haaa! You had me laughing out loud. The pool wall is a terrific addition. You must keep that.
jackdaniels666

I think the pool wall looks cool but the overall scene is better without it because he is trying to escape. Plus it looks like he might hit his head on the way in.

With the pool! But it needs to be dirtier. Way too blue at the moment.
wethand
02-07-09, 01:25 PM
@maxinkuk: haha, thats the purpose of this one! :)
@jackdaniels: lol. yeah, he would definetely jump OUT of the pool!:lol:
but this is not thought as a pool. this only should give the liquidity some room... the podestal... :)
@ captain: here you go, now its DIRTY! :)
-----------------
last update:
i thined the poolwalls a little bit and used another technique to add the tiles.
the mask-by-intensity technique (like the shirt)
i made all uv's inside zbrush. i hope you understand my little process-pic.
just a little addition to the pic: areas you hide don't change the UV's when you set some inside zbrush.
and that made it possible to texture and inflat it very accurate!
just learned something new! :))

Wow he is great. I have always had a love for amphibian characters, guess I grew up on too many movies about them. Your model is super cool. Love all the textures you have created for him. That sweater is great and the detail of his body is really awesome. Love that pic you made with the light on him, makes it look as if a helicopter is chasing after him after he steals all that money, a little too bright though. I like the pool idea with the wall around it, maybe you can say he can transport through any body of water to another. Also thanx for sharing your tips and tricks especially the transparency stuff I needed that. Take care and good luck with the contest. Happy Zbrushing. :D

hey there! :)
Spimmy: thanks a lot :) :)
Bas Mazur: thank you very much! if you as a fisherman like my fish, it means a lot to me! the wood now is final!
Hamilcar: thank you! :) but i bet you don't want to swim with mister fish... cause he could be a pervert... i just dunno... :p
solidsnake: thank you very much mate! i hope, the pool isn't to much. but i thought, the idea of something that contains the water could be better... :)
Lucky_1: thanks man!!! i appreciate it!
Moni-Poroni: thanks ma... uhm... woman! :) i bet there are many things you don't know... and yeah, you can ask me every time... :)
just for the little explanation: uv's are the coordinates for the texture... your 3d-model pelt on a 2d-space... but i think, its better to describe it in german one time... just ask :)
i'm happy about every tip i can give... i love helping people.... i dream of teaching... :P
Marsyas: thanks a lot! yeah, it is very clean... i like this technique
(UV's-->alpha texute-->mask by intensity-->inflat)
--------------
oke, this time my final update.
all textures and nearly all materials are done (i don't know the fishmans material... i don't like the shadows... and the details are going under)
the whole scene is done!! WOOOHOOOWWW
Because i build up everything in one single tool the whole thing has... yeah, MANY polys. right now there are 39 mio polys... and my pc is still working... :)
the investment was right!!! :)
now i have to read something about lights in zbrush...
i am still unsure about the perspective i am gonna use in the final...
and i am unsure about my presentation... but i think i am gonna make various pieces (one the model itself without textures, one with textures and base, and one like my portfolio piece)
ah yeah, and i am very proud to say, i ONLY used zbrush. NO other application until now.
here is the "final model" (but not my final render/image/post)

hey guys!
thanks a lot for your comments!
solid: thanks man! i'm glad, you like it! but i am afraid the base is to big to get into the real judgement...
bryzol: thank you very much! :)
captain sensible: thanks mate! yeah, sometimes it was hard to stay inside zbrush... but i have learned SO MUCH during this contest BECAUSE i really wanted to make it all inside zbrush...
--------------------
not really an update. after a whole day (yesterday) experimenting with layers, render techniques and lighting i felt ready to try my first true zbrush composing.
and WOW! i didn't know zbrush has SUCH A STRONG depth of field option...
hey, i just LOOOOVE this effect... and i was soooo blown away!!!
damn, i LOVE this tool!!!!
the only problem i had was painting over the final render.
so my little trick: i rendered the image with all effects and materials.
then i exported it as a psd. reimported it to zbrush and painted....
damn... THANKS PIXOLOGIC!!!!
this will be my final image. i couldn't resist to post it before my final post... :)
i only have to make the turntables now. then i am done.
but i am thinking about render it in a huge resolution to make some closeups. there are many details.... and i really like these little friends.. :)
and maybe i want to print it for my room... hey, i am so proud of it :)
you can call me self-opinionated... i call it... proud! :)

wethand, the final image's looking so cool! Almost like a rendered full scene. And I don't think the base is too big...as it serves well as the backdrop/stage. You can be self-opinionated ;) and definitely should be proud. Excellent work :tu: :tu:

hey goldo_O
thank you so much!!! when i entered the contest i couldn't imagine to get such a nice feedback... thanks man!!!
this is a german castle called "meissen"
i don't know it... i just typed in google image search "stadt bei nacht" which means "city at night". i mean, i knew i want to blur it very strong.
i hope that is not against the rules....
i found this site: http://www.ferienwohnung-galle-meissen.de/Meissen.html
i'm gonna mention the site in my final post. this has to work... i hope i get not disqualified through this...
but i am happy its recognizable that this is a castle. :)
and now... further work... i want to finish this thing. i like it, but to work so long on a single piece is... you know... lame ^^

Sorry mate, I didn't mean to worry you for the picture. I think you made a very good use of it, by matching the horizon line.
Maybe you could darken the farest part of the pear because we can still see the border of your render: (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27127552%27,%27wethand.jpg%27,1,0%29)
