Hey guys! Im really happy to be a part of that contest.
It took some time for me to develop my Hero, but now the backstory and concept are ready for posting i think.
Enjoy!
pulse_concept2 copy.jpg
Artist Name: Maximilian – Gordon Vogt
Hero: Pulse
Real Name: Quin Loose
Backstory:
In 1940 Quin was 45 and worked as a mechanic for a weapons manufacturing company. He worked on a prototype of a particle accelerator
tankcannon. Due to a malfunction he was called to repair the machine.
When he was inside the plasmatunnel to repair the enginecells, the machine started and overloaded. The impulse emitter imploded and the whole factory
was destroyed in seconds. There was just a crater left when the scienceteam got threre and saw the impossible. Quin layed in the middle of the mess, half disintegrated,
falling appart slowly with parts of his body changing the molecular structure. They brought him to area 51 and put him into a container that sustained his structual form.
They studied him for years and did tests on him,
trying to understand his condition and how he was able to survived the catastrophy.
They thought he was in a coma, but since they put him in that container he was at full consciousness but wasnt able to move.
65 years later they were able to build a system that could sustain his structural form. 56 cylinder were attached to his body.
Those „savers“ are storing the exact position of every single molecule in his body.
This system was build into a suit which is powered by three high performance reactors that can be worn as a backpack.
It was a torture when they drilled the savers into his body. When they had applied the suit and turned on the reactors he was able to move again.
Well, after that he was so pissed that he got nuts, attacked the scientists and ran away. Everything he touches in his way out of the building disintegrated into dust.
When they tried to catch him by force with military support he felt cornered and suddenly disappeared in a bright flash of light.
Since then he is on the run, trying to understand what has happened to him and mastering his abilities.
Facts:
Quins state of disintegrating is an instant. The savers in his suit are able to keep the molecules, as his body, correctly arranged.
When his sute is turned off, he has to use all his strenght to keep him self from falling appart. When that happens its even very hard for him to move.
If the saver system is down for a longer time spontainious impulses are starting to shoot out of his body, destroying his souroundings.
He is now 105 Years old.
Abilities:
disintegration of any material by sending impulse beams out of his body.
changing the aggregate state of a material by shoting impulse beams out of his body.
changing and rearranging the molecular structure of any material on touch.
Light speed traveling in a straight direction by accelerating his own body with a concentrated impulse. His own body disintegrates into every single molecule throughout that process.
Nice start mate. Like your design concept and just can't wait to see him.

Here comes just a little update.
I worked a bit on the anatomy and the general shape of my hero. Hands and Head are nearly untouched and are
the next thing to go for. Im in the middle of a freelance job right now and have just little time.
But that job is going to be finished around the 19th and then i will dedicate all my time on Pulse.
critics are more as welcome.
First sculpting session:
VIMEO LINK (http://www.vimeo.com/2791239)
I did some tweaks later on that i havent recorded somehow. I had
recocnized some proportion problems on a second view. I used the
anatomy reference model of Zack Petroc to get some of my proportions
right. Zacks model is just grate, and worth buying. I recommend it to everyone.
I also decided to make the shoes as subtools later.
So here is the current wip:

thanx, gordon!

nice anatomy, great definition of muscle groups.. :tu:

excellent work so far! The anatomy is looking very natural, the only crit I have is that the latissimus dorsi should be bulkier and more inflated to fit in with the rest of his muscles. Right now they are definately too small.
keep up the good work, the concept looks great :tu:

Thank you petekasim. The anatomy on your model look awsome too. especially the hands! I have to deal with em next. And your defenetly right with the latisimus dorsi. Thanks for the hint, I will fix that soon.
Captain Sensible
Thank you for the kind words. I know what you mean and basicly thats my workflow, but this time somehow i focused too much on the body. But the rest will be done soon!

Good progress man, the front of the deltoid where it meets the top of the bicep seems a little off, it should overhang there. Also if you notice the attachment isn't directly in the center of the arm, it's pushed forward past the tricep which takes up 3/4 of the overall arm mass. Hope this helps. :)

Gordon you have made a fantastic anatomy study here! :tu: :tu: :tu: The arms are looking so great! From the front view though, the trunk looks a little bit too straight in my opinion. You might want to curve the ribcage a little bit to make the hips pop up more. The groin could be a bit lower and the belly button a bit more high too... nothing much, but you should have almost a hand length between these two.
Can't wait to see his outfit! :)

01-27-09, 12:03 PM
hey gordon!
thanks for the pm.
great update. think the mechanical stuff at his back is gonna look great.
i only got a few crits for you.
i think you should smooth out some of the big creases you got on the legs, i guess it's fabric wrinkles from his suit, and maybe do some smaller "harder ones. right now it kinda looks like the suit is a number to big, which i'm guessing is not what you are after. try looking at how the upper body of him looks. think, that is more right.
then i got a small suggestion for his wrists. try doing a more angulare bend in the wrist. right now it's too soft, imo.
hope you don't mind i did a quick paint over, so you better can see what i mean.
forGordonV.jpg
hope this wasn't too harsh.

01-27-09, 02:12 PM
if someone has a good idea on how to make a particle disintegration in Zbrush pleaaseee tell me!Well, not particle disintegration as such but looking at the model those ridges made me think of the butchers' diagrams for cutting up animals into pieces.
I think it would be pretty neat if you'd cup up the model and scaled and moved various parts as if he was exploding. Boccioni's Unique forms of continuity in space (http://www.moma.org/collection/printable_view.php?object_id=81179) and some of Dali's statues with shelves flying out of the models come to mind.
You could use the morph difference technique to scale and shift whole shelves of the model building geometry that connect to the central core.
I can draw it if you want but I hope I explained the concept.

Thanks for the replys!
Moni-Poroni
Thanks Moni! your Sculpting is improving tooo!
abyss103
Hey abyss! Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your right with the
fabric folds. Its the first time for me creating such folds. I have to find me some reference and try harder! Thanks for the tip with the wrists, but I ll change the posture of the hands in the final Pose anyway!
And in my opinion critics can never be to harsh. Im just lerning from my own
faults. And most of the time I need another pair of eyes finding those faults!
Captain Sensible
Tanks man!
SOLcreator
Cool thank you! Those nodes are actually his Saversystem preventing him
from disintegrating into pieces! I also love your Knoweapon! Nice atempt on
building the hands.
maxinkuk
At first, gratulations on the Toprow! (even if it comes a littlebit too late, it defenetly deserves this credit)
You really make me think about doing this disintegration. Im a bit new to Zbrush, maybe you could explain me the morph difference technique? A drawing would be awsome!
Ok, here are comming my poses. These are just suggestions to find a good
and working dynamic pose for pulse. I have 2 or three other poses in mind that I will post soon. What do you think of them. Do you have an good Idea
for a cool pose! Dont hesitate to tell me ;D
Somehow Transposemaster isnt working for me. I cant get my Highres with Subtools back. Zbrush crashes in the process. Also my Transpose movie was gone to dilirium. Ive got the lowres mesh now, which I will use for

I like the second pose better, you should try to change the position of the head and left leg in the first pose to make it more balanced (you could also try to get him up on his tip-toes, maybe?). Keep the poses coming man!

maxinkuk
01-29-09, 05:51 AM
Hi Gordon,
here's a quick sketch of what I mean. Using those ridges as well as adding a few more to cut the model in pieces and literally explode it along its normals. In the sketch it's all a bit too dramatic maybe, probably it would be better if most of the chunks would not go too far from the body, actually, to make sense it should be that smaller chunks fly away further whilst larger one stay closer. You could then even sculpt the geometry between the shells and the core by for example carving out blobs to give the feel of some event at particle level going on there.
disintegration-sketch-suggestion.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27125283%27,%27disintegration-sketch-suggestion.jpg%27,1,0%29)
And here's a description of the morph method given by Kraken a couple of days ago:

I look forward to hear what you think of this.

Awsome maxinkuk! Just saw your post after uploading the poses!
I will think about doing this, even ths process of deintegraten is far away from what I originaly thought of. But its a damn cool idea and somthing i could achieve with zbrush! I ll give it a try! Thank you so much maxinkuk!!!
maxinkuk
01-29-09, 06:15 AM
I'm so very glad you like the idea. Of course the question is if you feel like taking this route at this point in time. Not an easy decision at all. It may be not too much work actually if done in the right way.
gordon-v
01-29-09, 06:24 AM
yeah your right
maybe i can just add this deintegration process later as an detail by pulling out some parts in a dynamic way. so it fells that he just have arived at the spot he is standing and gathering his parts. My initial idea was that he can travel with the speed of light. he disintegrates into molecules dravels his way and instantly building up his form again when he arrives. the saver should move in a little time delay and are attaching themselfs one by one to his body. I really could show that arriving state with the morph difference technique.
On top of that I really like the pic you showed me of Boccioni's Unique forms of continuity in space. (http://www.moma.org/collection/printable_view.php?object_id=81179)
So doing that would be kind of a tribute to Boccioni :D

I really like the 3rd pose Gordon! Nice work! Looks like he his ready to give a high kick to someone :) Maybe close the left fist or pose the fingers differently?
SOLcreator
01-29-09, 08:49 AM
gordon-v Im liking posetest4, though I would exaggerate the bend more and twist the torso more putting him off balance so he's got that look where hes dodging an attack and counter-attacking.
Nice work! :tu:
I agree, the pose is nice and active but needs to show more of him attacking. Nice antomy and suit design!
gordon-v
01-30-09, 02:15 AM
Thanks for stopping by guys!
goldo_O
yeah thats my favorite pose too. but I wasnt my intention to showing of
a high kick! I just wanted him in a kinda backwards movment when he shoots
a impulse beam out of his right hand. Maybe I have to change the position of the leg so it transports that information better.
For the left hand, this is just a rough idea with what im going with. I defenatly will pose the fingers differently. Thanks for the critics!
SOLcreator
I will try that, thx sol!
KayDee
Im glad you like my suit design! thx!
Retopology:
So here comes my first poor atempt on doing the retopology for him.
I will make the hands and head seperate from the body, because my laptop
can handle higher polycounts better this way.

Lovely model and detailing! Very nice indeed :tu:
gordon-v
01-30-09, 08:57 AM
Thanks alot spimmy!
I worked on the topolines, and its a really hard thing! some how the magic
Behind Topology hasnt reached my brain yet! Maybe I need to take the same
retopolyskillpills that SolidSnakexxx have swallowed :D.
Anyway here is what i got so far!
I have problems at the neck area, maybe someone has an Idea?
topolayaout.jpg
Here is the timelaps too:
2Dt91IUaoZM
since you have made a decent sculpt why not make a
topology that has some muscle flow built into it?
you are putting a lot of time into this so instead of
making the grid like topology you have chosen, try to poly-paint
around the muscle groups using an anatomy chart for reference.
hope this helps
cheers
