Action Hero: Captain Hornet
Real Name: Lord Quentin Wilson
Hi everyone! I'm back from holidays and very excited to join this contest. Here is the quick concept of my hero: Captain Hornet!
Have fun everyone!
Cpt_Hornet_Concept01.jpg
Summary:
On a remote Japanese island, Lord Quentin Wilson, a biochemist and entomologist born into a British aristocratic family, stumbled upon a rare and then yet undiscovered hornet species, the Vespa Mortis. Analysing and learning from those astounding and exceptional insects, he used all his newly found knowledge to built a suit so that he'd become Captain Hornet - a man fighting against the evil doings of the highly secretive WB Association, a criminal organisation generating revenues from the poaching and selling of protected animal species, with a grudge against the British royal family dating back to the Black Act of 1723.
Backstory:
In 1920, Lord Quentin Wilson was born into an aristocratic British family. Growing up as a kid in the city of Wokingham, south east of London, he developed a strong passion for insects and later went on to become one of the world's foremost biochemists and entomologists, specializing in Hymenopterans (bees, wasps, hornets…). Besides being an incredibly talented scientist, he was also a very athletic and agile man, holding black belts in several martial arts.
Among Quentin's ancestors one can find Lord Alfred Wilson (1689-1742) who was an advisor to King Georges I and at the origin of the Black Act, passed by the parliament of Great Britain in 1723, in response to a group of bandits and poachers known as the 'Wokingham Blacks'. Under the Black Act, a variety of poaching-related crimes became felonies, which meant that they could potentially be punished by death. Officially, the Wokingham Blacks came to an end, but secretly the group endured and grew ever so slowly into an international criminal organization. Generating huge revenues from the poaching of protected animal species, the secret group now called the WB Association nurtured their hatred against the royal family that had tried to end their activities, and they were scheming every day, in order to carry out their final plan: the assassination of the Royal family’s head, the Queen.
As an environmental activist Quentin Wilson traveled across the globe giving conferences to denounce animal massacres and poaching. Leading his own investigation on an ivory smugglers network of Eastern Africa, he was chocked to discover the existence of the WB Association behind all that, and how it was connecting him to his own family past.
To continue his ancestor's fight against this evil corporation of crooks and protect endangered animals across the world more effectively, Quentin decided he had to do something.
Shortly after the Second World War had ended, Quentin went on a research trip to the sacred Japanese island of Miyajima, located just a few miles south of Hiroshima. There, he studied for years what he thought to be a mutation of the Asian Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia). The giant hornet of Japan was already known as the most dangerous hornet species in the world, but the specimens he discovered in the tropical jungle of this little island could make even more deadly stings.
Wilson's analysis on the venom of this new insect, that he would call Vespa Mortis afterwards, revealed that it contained such an abnormally concentrated level of the neurotoxin mandaratoxin that a single sting could stimulate the pain nerve fibers of an entire human body and dissolve human tissue. Another component in these hornets' deadly venom he identified as a volatile alarm pheromone (2-methyl-3-butene-2-ol or MBO) that attracted more hornets to the stung victim. Besides secreting this lethal venom, these "Hornets of Death" also boasted incredible levels of resistance and strength through the consumption of larval secretions.
Wilson quickly succeeded to synthetically recreate the Vespa Mortis' venom, pheromones and larval secretions and started working on a high technology suit that would enable a human to use these biochemical weapons:
A poisonous stingers projector on his right forearm pad, capable of adapting the amount of mandaratoxin emitted to either paralyze the enemy or simply kill him.
Synthetic larval secretions at a very concentrated level getting introduced into the blood of the suit's owner, instantly enhancing his physical abilities. After additional tests it appeared that these secretions had also a regenerating effect and noticeably increased the subject's longevity.
A large cape saturated with MBO pheromones and a Vespa Mortis nest mounted on the back to provide immediate support when in danger.
In a Mark2 version of the suit, as cybernetic sciences continued to evolve, a mask was added that provided enhanced spatial perception (increased angle of vision and distance of sight, improved reactivity and perception in the dark, motion sensors…)
With this high tech suit and this armada of biochemical weapons, all based on his research on the Vespa Mortis, Quentin Wilson became Captain Hornet.

I love your design!! I think this character has MUCH potential. Would be nice if the eye masks would be smaller, covering only his eyes. Because the brow detail is just awesome!! Keep at it.

@pixolClay: Thank you! I too was a little sad to cover his funny face with a mask, but I did these tests and at the end, the third one remains the most interesting to me (the 4th one would have mess his haircut, that's a no-no ).
Cpt_Hornet_Head02.jpg
However, if I have time, I'd love to make a second render with his mask off.
Thanks everyone for the kind words! Yesterday I took a 3D plane and a Zshpere and started to think about the pose I'd like to make at the end. The proportions are not correct, but I think I'd like to do something like this lateral dive, where Cpt Hornet would aim somebody with his stringers projector.
Cpt_Hornet_Pose01.jpg
Let me know what you think of it.
Cheers,

Thanks guys for your support!
Here is a small update.
Model sheet made in photoshop:
05_Cpt_Hornet_Ortho01.jpg
I projected these front and side views on two 3D planes:
06_Cpt_Hornet_Ortho02.jpg
From there, I started my skeleton by appending a ZSphere in my Subtool palette:
07_Cpt_Hornet_Ortho03.jpg
I created an adaptive skin from that, and appended it to my tool. The I just masked the ZSphere subtool and started to match the basemesh to my model sheets with the Move brush:
08_Cpt_Hornet_Ortho04.jpg
And here is my basemesh, ready to get some ZBrush love:

Cheers!

Hey Brett! Nice to see you here man. Thanks a lot for the kind words!
SolidSnakexxx: Thanks Yong, maybe our two insects heroes could work together against the bad guys?
GregStrangis, maxinkuk, wethand, cojoMan, threetails, petekasim, chindian, Lucky_1: Thanks a lot guys, your support is really helping me to move forward :)
allRone, abyss103, Harmonic: About the hands, there is no secret, you'll always have some problems with the thumb or have a fancy topology on the palm. Here is what I did:
1. I used this setup but didn't really care about the adaptive skin settings since I always tweak the vertices by hand with the move brush afterwards.
2. I want to get rid of this bad cut at the base of the thumb, so I start by deleting the first level of subdiv.
3. Hide the faces I don't need anymore and hit the DelHidden button.
4. Then move and pinch at full strength the duos of vertices I want to merge.
5. Export my mesh with these settings
6. Directly import the exported mesh with the Weld slider at .1. Tadaaa, now the vertices are merged and you can subdivide your model.
10_Cpt_Hornet_Hands.jpg
In some cases though, it's easier to export the mesh to your fav 3D app and do these little modifications there. But I think it's interesting to know that you can do it in ZBrush as well.
And here is a little update on the first pass for the proportions. I think I'll start working on the suite and accessories soon and then, retopo party!
10_Cpt_Hornet_Sculpt_Props.jpg
Cheers everyone!
SolidSnakexxx
01-08-09, 01:30 AM
Wow, that export/import trick is one cool move... Thank you so much...Your mode's coming along so wonderfully. :tu: :tu:
and Yes, it would be great and such an honor to have my character fighting side by side with the Royal Captain Hornet.
Seriously, after the contest is over, we should do like a match up / team up / gang up super diorama pose.

01-10-09, 02:14 AM
Thanks a lot for the support guys, your comments really help me to find the motivation after a day at work. :)
So here is where I am so far: trying to block the design of the suit before starting the retopology. I still have to do his stinger projector and little pockets on the belt. I think I'll cut the knee pads though; I think this part of anatomy will be more interesting than two pieces of black plastic.
12_Cpt_Hornet_Suite.jpg
Now, I've made another test for the pose and am still wondering if I should make him masked or not. What's your opinion guys? Should Quentin Wilson be afraid to reveal his identity?

SolidSnakexxx: Thanks man, but I still have a loooot of things to do. This is just a temporary mesh before retopo.
wethand: You're right, if I use this pose at the end, I'd certainly remove this pointing finger. Thanks for this good point!
Captain Sensible: Thank you Captain, I put his mask back.
dustbin1_uk: Thanks!
gordon-v: Thank you for your input Gordon. I hope I'll make another pose that will be better than the first two. :)
Y/Haüss: Thanks you Sir!
Trurl: I'm glad you like it, thank you!
cghuang: Thanks for giving me your thoughts on the mask. It was hard to chose, I like the expression I could have given to the unmasked face, but after all, it's an action hero contest and the mask is kinda mandatory for such a classical hero design. So mask on!
Moni-Poroni: Thank yoU! I'll probably make a real pedestal under his cape.
Juggertha: Thanks! Since the upper body is very busy with all his gadgets and stuff, I'll keep the legs very simple, that will be a nice area to show a little bit of anatomy.
BARON_3D: You're welcome, I'm always happy to share if that can help someone else!
weirya: Merci Weirya! ;)
The weekend is over, but I managed to define the design of the suit. Now I think I'm ready to start the retopo. I might have to revisit the design of the stingers, and I don't know if I'll keep the little hair thingies on his shoulders, but the rest should pretty much stay as is.
13_Cpt_Hornet_Suite02.jpg
I wish you all a great week on your characters!
Cheers!

good decision on the mask. I like the stingers too!
Nice idea with the hairs. but i would put them ont the back of the deltoids, or at least make them a little bit l onger and face them backwords. Maybe also some on his left forearm (batmastyle). Just some suggestions.
Looking forward to your next pose!

Love the combination of cool stylization with a healthy dose of naturalism in the sculpting techniques. He's a lot of fun. :)
Great character, and I like what you are going to do with the "cape" or wave to the podium.
Love the features in the face, only thing that catches my eyes is the stitching or seam in the cowl to the throat. It's a good fabric line, but the cut is so deep it reminds me of an incision instead of fabric. Anyway you can soft it a little? I know there's already so much lovely detail there. Might help bring the eye back up towards the mouth instead of the throat?
ha! maybe I just have some phobia about cuts on the throat? hhaha. It probably won't matter when it's all painted.
This head looks awesome! His mien is great, I love it!

SolidSnakexxx, markrulz, jp_smith, bryzol: Thank you very much guys :o
AVTPro: I know what you are saying, and you're right, I'll soft this line a little and make it looks more like a fabric seam. Thanks for giving me your opinion, much appreciated :) :tu:
So I did another quick posing test, it's more a warm up than something I plan to do though. Still experimenting with the cape.

Nice sculpting. Make sure you get some close ups in your final post. You don't want the judges missing those lovely details!!! :tu:

Captain Sensible: Thanks Captain! :) You are right about the left arm on my last pose test... it's not really fitting to the dynamic of the body... at this flight speed, it should be posed in a different way. However I shouldn't use this pose as my final one... the cape is taking too much space and it would be hard make a final render with more Captain H. than fabric
maxinkuk: Indeed, the cape is huge, I hope it won't be Cpt Hornet's weakness. I'm not listening to Edna's advices.
M68ndaZSKa8
Hex0254: Thanks a lot! The references are very flatering :)
SolidSnakexxx: Thanks Yong!!!
Moni-Poroni: Yes, still warming up, but it's not false modesty... I have big troubles to move the borders of my cape with the move brush, so I basically have to find the final flow of the cape with transpose only. I still have to experiment this to be efficient on my final model.
Etcher,GregStrangis: Thanks guys! I appreciate that :)
SOLcreator: Thanks Sol! Nice work on your costume design too, I left a message on your thread!
Derek Frenzo: Tank you Derek!
Finners: Thanks! Still a lot to do though
weirya: Thanks for the ref, I didn't know Wildsiderz and it's true that Captain Hornet has a little bit of the dragonfly guy style :) I don't have particular reference for this character, I just started from this burlesque face sculpt, and imagined what kind of super hero this man could be.
Lucky_1: Thanks LuckY! Well, having a dense topo was not an avantage when I was drawing it with polypaint, but since I'm planning to use Transpose master, which uses the 1st level of subdivision to pose your model, I wanted to have at least 5 loops on the joints to limit the mask spreading and thus, the mesh deformations. Compared to the first poses I made with my ZShpere basemesh, it gave me satisfaction (tididididi dididiiii) and almost made me forget the time I spent on the retopo
gregoconn: Thanks and you are right! I should make something more compact for the final render.
Hamilcar,jarlaxle00: Thanks!
I'm currently sculpting the rest of the body and should be able to show a work in progress by tomorrow. Thanks again for the comments guys, it's great to have your feedbacks. :tu:

Hey guys!
Here is a little update on the sculpt: I might start the polypaint very soon and keep the detailing for when my character will be posed. I should continue to work on the areas that won't be affected by the posing (boots, face, accessories...) but I'm affraid to push the resolution too high and then have the Transpose master problems that some of you had. So, yeah, I should finalize my pose next week-end, when I'll come back from a 4 days break.
Cheers!

I stopped to work on Polypaint, I'll probably make some material tests before going too far in the colouring process.

gregoconn: Thank you! Let's try to both finish on time! ;)
SolidSnakexxx: :o Thank you, but I can give you many many links of cooler entries, starting by yours :D
AVTPro: Thank you very much!
FoOD: Thanks man! The cape as a base would have been great, but I didn't want to play with the rules. It could have been considered as a part of the character and not a base by itself. I would also love to have this bad boy on my desk and plan to offer myself a 3D print if I am happy with it at the end. So I try to avoid potential problems of gravity and fragility that a cape as a base could represent.
maxinkuk:  I don't know, but when I vizualise Captain Hornet in action, I can totally imagine him in this sequence of tragic death of super heros with capes!
threetails: Thank you threetails!:tu:
spimmy: Thanks! It's a bit caricatural, but I hope I'm still in the "believable" side required by the rules.
Moni-Poroni: Thanks a lot!
wethand: In fact I plan to make him just about to dive from the cornice of a building. The previous image wasn't helping with the orientation of the base, but hopefully the final sculpt will be more readable. Maybe the following images helps to understand a bit more.
Seavannah: Thank you so much for your support!:):):)
PS: The left foot is still in the air, but with the final base, it should be pushing on the border of the cornice like on a starting block.

i really love this character he is very well developed, i especially like the integration of a hornet into the chest. the only thing that i could ever imagine being different about this guy is instead of a cape he would have wings. and more appropriately hornet wings, but i think it would be too late for that sort of change. regardless this is one of the best hero designs here.

maxinkuk: Ahaha, thanks man!
Jason Belec: Thank you Jason, I'll try to finish it properly.
BillyT: Thanks for your comment Billy! Indeed, I was undecided at the begining of the project about having insect wings or a traditionnal cape. When I had a better idea of his back-story, it became clear that he would not have insect wings. Think of him as the burlesque cousin of Batman if you will, he has some gadgets and an enhanced physical power, but I wanted him to remain realistic, even if his proportions and features are stylised. Marvel's wasp was also using insect wings and I didn't want to make something similar.
wethand: Hehe, landing, taking off, diving? I guess you can tell many things with just a camera angle :) Cheers mate!
Captain Sensible: Thanks a lot Captain! I'll keep this angle for my final render!
threetails, about the base, yes everything was made in Z. For the walls, I first tried Seb Legrain's tutorial where he does architecture modeling with Projection Master. But I had some troubles to get some curved mouldings with alphas so I tried another technique. I started with a SweepProfile3D primitive and gave it 4 Vertical Slices and the maximum subdivisions in Horizontal. Then I played with the curves to get the profile I wanted. Then I created a Polymesh3D out of that and started to add vertical loops with the Edge Loop button. The polys are still a bit strechted, but it's better this way when I subdivided the mesh.

For the volute, I used the traditionnal ZSpheres/rough 3D sketch/retopo/final sculpt pipeline:
28_Cpt_Hornet_Base02.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27126812%27,%2728_Cpt_Hornet_Base02.jpg%27,1,0%29)
And here is the final base with a cap and some repeated bricks using Subtool Master. Now I need to put some texture and few scratches on it.

Thanks for going into detail regarding the technique you used for the base :tu:
This hard-surface stuff using ZBrush still manages to elude me, I'll have to take the time to get my head round it, though, cos it looks pretty fun! (a lot more fun than endless vertex pulling and polygon splitting)
The more I find out about ZBrush the more I learn to love its peculiar ways... reminds me of being a kid again!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments! So I guess everyone is very busy this week! That's exciting, everything is taking shape and there is awesome art done all over the place!
Here is something close to final for my Captain (not the camera, I'll use the previous one). I have to decrease the spec on the fingers though.

looks great i really like the suit detail and spec that it creates, looking farward to the final renders for him.

02-10-09, 02:04 PM
Agreed! Spec is nice! is the glow you've got going on because of the depth cue? or is it another rendering effect?

Wow! Really cool!
I think a more shimmering and rougher patterned surface on the glasses (like an insect) will support the great style.
Best regards, Rossi

The character is just soooo cool!! :tu: really like the textures, top stuff!!:) :tu:
Beautiful depht and polypainting render! Pandex is so cool.:tu: :tu:
How did you do this tiny détails on the fabric (alveolus)?
It's sculpted or that come from the material?
jtruthnick
02-12-09, 06:27 AM
Yep, this guy gets my vote!!! How'd you do the bump pattern on the fabric if you don't mind me asking? amazing stuff...
Great paint job (the texture on the suit!!) :tu: !

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I'm working on my still images right now, and should be able to post them by tomorrow.
JR_Rossi: Thanks! I tried some various cell patterns for the eyes, but eventually decided to keep them smooth. As soon as I was putting some details on them, I had the feeling to lose the hornet style and get the eyes of a fly instead, if you know what I mean. It also indicates that it's a manufactured gear instead of a biological deformation/mutation. I hope it makes sense.
weirya & jtruthnick: Nothing extraodrinary here, I just use a fabric texture and put it in greyscale. It was a bit too noisy so I edited it in Photoshop to have something more simple. Then I just used the standard brush with DragRectangle stroke. The alpha was pretty big (1000 pixels) so a single stroke was covering half of his chest. I just had to pay attention to the overlapping between the different strokes.

 Well..I have to disagree with goldo_O that it's not extraordinary...in fact... this entry has been an extraordinary one since the first post! Thank you so much for your mini tutorial. :tu:
Many thanks Goldo_O for explanation! and take your time to respond us.:)
You said :"I just had to pay attention to the overlapping between the different strokes." and I agree with you about that.
I was thinking you used an other technique, because I didn't see overlapping...Congratulation!:tu:

Hey guys! This will be my last post before my final entry. I'm still convuslively refreshing Youtube website to finally see my transpose video online. It's already uploaded in the afternoon so I can post the link anyway, I'm just waiting to double-check the quality.
Anyway, before having the thread locked, I wanted to thank you all for posting in here and being a huge source of motivation! I was about to give up several times, but your support helped me to continue until today.
Some amazing pieces of art have been made and I'm very glad I entered this contest beside you fellow ZBrushers! That was really a blast!
Good luck everyone, and see you in about two weeks when the threads will reopen! ;)

It's been an honor entering the same contest with you. Your Captain Hornet is one master piece even before you are showing the final entry. Best of luck to you. :tu: :tu:
