Rampage (Villain) WIP Thread by Thaddeus Mitra Maharaj

Hey everyone... here's my entry for the competition...

Started off not really knowing where i wanted to take this - just that i wanted to do a villain who was kind of a "hulk" character... So i started with a sphere and just playing around a bit as a searched for a concept head...
rampage01.jpg

Once I had that I did up a quick concept sketch of the body I wanted:

rampage_concept01.jpg

So that's what I'm going with... hehe

Here's the backstory:

Formerly Juao Luis Gilliard – an ex-marine – he was already a beast of a soldier before the procedures which eventually changed him. A true grunt and ruthless warrior, he was chosen as top of his class and squad to undergo an experimental bio-engineering of super-soldiers the military was testing.
Chosen for his strength and unrelenting resolve to win in battle no matter the cost and danger to himself – he was just the type of fearless volunteer the Abishai Project was looking for.

The project, shrouded in secrecy, was a type of genetic alteration achieved through radiation induced mutation and the infusion of genetic information from other species to the human DNA code. Many trials had been done with disastrous and often inhumane results – all of which were quickly destroyed and all evidences wiped out as they would be severe infringements of human rights. Juao – henceforth referred to as “Rampage” – was one of the first ‘successful’ tests. Although the procedure caused irreversible mutations to his appearance and mental state – while it made him exponentially stronger, faster and with heightened senses – the aesthetic outcome was nothing short of hideous. It also caused his brain to regress slightly to a more primal state of a true hunter/killer and increased aggressive tendencies.

His skin now had become a tough hide, and his bio-engineered right arm – a formidable weapon which was an infusion of advanced bio-weaponry and organic circuitry. He can generate directed pulses of energy for short bursts and also channel it into a sort of ‘photon punch’. His bone structure has been modified to be harder to better accommodate and endure the added pressures of his new biology as well as combat. Also – his skeleton has been made to protrude at key places for added defensive and offensive capabilities in hand-to-hand combat. The skin-armor on his right arm – a thicker organic armor which is resistant to small arms fire and heat extends up his right arm and to some of his torso. Scientists weren’t able to get the organic armor over his entire body as originally intended because of unforeseen complications in the gene-alteration procedure. However it does cover his heart and with his increased healing ability – makes him an incredibly hard target to take down.

After falling out with his commanding officers, Rampage broke loose of his containment facility and is now on the loose. He’s constantly looking for the war that he was so specifically designed for and has an intense appetite for destruction. Now the public is at the mercy of this rogue beast unless he can be contained or stopped – else the rampage continues….

Hey everyone - well - got a little update for you...
Hopefully i can finish this model... Altho - i'm gonna have to see how my time goes with work... never know when you're a freelancer... if things get busy - i might have to abandon this project... but hopefully not... I'm really enjoying it so far...

-------------------

ISK-86 - Thanks - yep I'll try to keep the quality up...

KrakenCMT - thanks - hopefully it lives up to expectations...

3d70mohamedaly - hey man - thanks. Are you competing?

-----------------------

http://www.thechindian.com/rampage/rampage02.jpg

Started on the body - just imported a generic body mesh I have and started going to town on it...
After i was happy with the general form - I built a new topo for the character in XSI then brought it into zbrush and projected the details onto the new mesh... I'm recording the whole process of this character - just in case i decide to do a tute or something... hehe - we'll see...
Really not sure where i'm going with this one.

Anyways - looking forward to your comments and feedback!

Ur Mantis man is lookin pretty pimp dude! Definitely one of the threads i'm following for this competition! Can't wait to see him finished!

dustbin1_uk - Thanks!

-----------------------

Ok - So here's a small update on the modeling... corrected the deltoid muscles... and also started emphasizing some of the collar bone and details... Started on the abs as well - I wanna give a feel of bones protruding near the surface... so playing a bit with that... tell me wut u think...

Amazing work!!!

The only bit I don't like are the wrists, I think they need more work on the joint bones.

But I understand this is still a WIP.

100 times better than anything I can do!! Very envious!! Well done!

canndis - Yep - it helps as a kind of "road map" when i'm sculpting...

Lucky_1 - thanks man. Yours is coming along nicely as well... :tu:

dustbin1_uk - Yep - hadn't touched the arms/wrists... I'll be working on those today...

samar vijay - hahaha... The "sister for sale" one??? Lol - that would be awesome... We'll see - i'm still deciding on costume design. Was thinking maybe military pants and boots... since he was a soldier...

KrakenCMT - Thanks!

abyss103 - Thanks... will do as long as time and work allow...

pitchepuck - Thanks

SolidSnakexxx - haha - yep - that's the idea... Want him to be a real beast of a character!

------------------------------------

Hey everyone... I haven't really worked a lot on this during the weekend - had some stuff to do and ended up getting a bit of food poisoning... ekkk!
But i did manage to do a little work... Refined the back muscles and started on the arms... Here's what I got:

Thanks for all your encouragement and comments! I really appreciate them! Keep the feedback coming and good luck to all competitors! :tu:

Great Job Thad!...this villain exsudes power and intimidates the Bee Geeses out me! I know that right now you're still refinig the main masses, but sure as hell looks like a bold move in the right direction....I always dig the craftsmanship that showcase blending stylized and accurate anatomy within the same character. :tu: :tu:

jp_smith
01-05-09, 11:03 PM
This is looking bad ass. The thing that's standing out to me right now is how small and slender his fingers are, a dude like this should have big thick sledgehammer hands that look like they could crush a skull with zero effort. The fingers at the moment are reading more like pianist's fingers than rip a tank in half fingers. :) Lookin' sweet tho!

Felice'sWorkshop - Grazie molto my italian compadre!! haha... Glad u're liking so far... I'll try not to disappoint.

jp_smith - Yep I know... i hadnt touched them till this point... Still not satisfied with them - but i got something very specific in mind for the hands u'll have to wait and see... haha

3d70mohamedaly - Thanks man!

GregStrangis - Yep - that was one of my inspirations... Textures - thinking of a grey deadish skin tone with lots of veins and some military tattoos...

sendhilv - Thanks.

dustbin1_uk - Thanks.

----------------------------------------------------

Ok - so - worked on the hands a bit and the legs...
Also did the mesh extract for the pants and modeled some boots (not shown here)...
I think I'm about happy with the rough body sculpt now... Ready to start moving up in subDivs (right now at 0.5mil polys - level 5) - and workin on doing some of the anatomy mutations I had in mind.

rampage06.jpg

Also did some quick teeth and jaws for him...

Lookin forward to your feedback! I really appreciate the support so far!!! You guys rock!!!

01-07-09, 12:05 AM
Yep the teeth are great! I'd like to see how they look in the head. Great sculpt on the anatomy so far. Although the glutes look a bit too round and the muscle grouping on the lower back is a bit distracting. But otherwise, I very much like. Keep it up!

01-07-09, 12:10 AM
awesome stuff mitra maharaj...
nice muscles overall..
may be something rather then normal human legs might look cool on em.. just my thought.
else looks top nautch..

Looking great Chindian, maybe the trasition of his ribcage to his lower body is a little too strong ( a very strong line )

anyway keep it up mate !

MrHappy
01-07-09, 10:02 AM
Excellent work, I really like where this is going. The only suggestion I would make is to beef up his legs a little more. It might just be me, but the upper body looks like it would need a little more support for him to be stable.

brettSinclair
01-07-09, 11:03 PM
Cool stuff! Superb anatomy. I agree about the thicker leg thing though.

Good luck :tu:

Looking nastier then ever man, Love the snaggle teeth:tu: :tu:

petekasim
01-08-09, 11:04 AM
Wow, brilliant teeth! And the character ain't half bad either!

I love the general ebb and flow of the surface forms, it all looks suitably organic and is aesthetically very appealing. Is see what a couple of guys mean about the legs though. Bodybuilders tend to have a really exaggerated bulge in the upper part of their thighs, here's an over-the-top example:

bodybuilder.jpg

I think this is a photoshop job (at least I hope it is!) and obviously exaggerated, but with your character's upper body bulk the legs would definately protrude more to maintain balance.

Your guy will look awesome in an action pose, can't wait to see it!

chindian
01-08-09, 05:24 PM
Limitless_Thought2207 - Thanks man - lookin forward to seeing ur entry!

wethand - Thanks...

SolidSnakexxx - Glad u're likin the progress... I'm really liking Mantis man as well... u got some mad retopo skills bro! haha

allRone - Thanks... yep - the back - i got something specific in mind for it... it's not done yet... but hopefull it will look kool by the end... hehe. As to the glutes - didnt really spend too much time fussin with stuff that wont be showing in the final... (it'll be covered up with the pants...)

samar vijay - Thanks man... wasnt plannin on doing much more with the legs - since they'll be inside the pants and shoes - and wont be showing really... so I don't think i'm gonna spend time on unnecessary stuff since i have to balance this sculpt along with my workload for freelance projects...

Captain Sensible - Thanks... read above RE: feet.

dustbin1_uk - hehe - thanks.

KrakenCMT - Thanks man.

Lucky_1 - Yep - i did that for a reason... u'll see later...

MrHappy - thanks. Legs again... haha

brettSinclair - Thanks... yep - legs...

GregStrangis - Thanks

petekasim - Thanks... legs... haha

----------------------------------------

Wow that was alot of leg comments...
Anyways - to address the leg thing - yes i know they're small... But I dont think i'll be spending much time tweaking them - since they dont show in the final... (covered by pants and boots)

Anyways - here's an update on things... made a refinement and smooth pass overall... then started to do the neck area with the treatment I had in mind for Rampage...
Really goin for that stringy, sinuey stretched - disgusting skin... Anyways - hopefully it adds to the badass, mean, wicked look of the character.

1.jpg

Here's a close up of the neck:

2.jpg

Hope you guys like it!

BTW - havent touched the face as yet... saving that for later...

Lookin forward to your feedback!

Hey Chindian, the detail looks superb  , keep it up and I'm sure it'll look exceptional (well, it already does, but even more so)

I think you're right, once the trousers go on the legs won't be much of an issue! Looking forward to the details in the clothing :tu:

KrakenCMT
01-09-09, 08:07 AM
Top notch work on the neck! There's a lot of good detail there.

chindian
01-09-09, 08:17 PM
GregStrangis - Thanks man! Yep - still going with the bio-weapon arm... still not quite sure how it's gonna look - guess I'll have to play with it a bit... I'm rather enjoying the process of discovering this character as I go...

SolidSnakexxx - Hehe - thanks man! I'm really enjoying your mantis man! Keep it up!

petekasim - Thanks man. Yep yep - I'll adjust as needed with the clothes... I might rip them up a bit... so maybe then I'll revisit the underlying legs...

KrakenCMT - Thanks.

----------------------------------------------

Ok - so here's a boot... hehe. Clean version. Started it today from scratch... base in XSI... then sculpt in zbrush awesomeness... haha

I'll start fitting it to him tonight and start on the pants... so more updates soon I hope.

Thanks for all the feedback and support guys! And thanks to samar for the cool new shader!

Keep on rockin...

Fantastic modeling with those boots. From the perfect shape down to the fabric textures. This is really impressive.:tu::tu::tu:

01-10-09, 03:05 PM
maxinkuk - thanks.

-----------------

Well - didnt get a chance to do any sculpting today. I had to reinstall some software and do some troubleshooting on my computer. Seems one of my hard-drive might be getting ready to die...

But i did manage to bring the boots into the Rampage model... so here it is:

1.jpg

For some reason - when i tried mirroring the ztool with the boot to make the Right side... it caused some major scaling and translation issues... Didn't mirror it right. (Using SubTools Master...) It almost seemed like it was doing it around the wrong center point... but i checked the center point and it's at world 0,0,0... so it shud work...

Any ideas why???

I had to merge the subtools together and then mirror and move it into place by hand... But I'd really like to be able to do it while keeping the separate subtools. Can anyone help or know wut's goin on here???

I even tried mirroring an exported obj of the boots in Maya and bringing it back in - but then the subD levels get messed up...

Well - any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

clone subtool. append new subtool. take your subtool on high subdivide delete your lower subdivisions. deformation>mirror x. reconstruct subdivisions until you are back to the lowest. and you should be good! ps I love the power your guy has just standing still he needs something like a pole or a guardrail with cement residue for a weapon.

Like the last update man, one thing that bothers me a little is with the pants on his waste it makes him look maybe too tiny like it would snap if he landed from a jump or something. Otherwise looks sick with the boots :)

Nice job with the boots man, I'd add some wear wrinkles to the toe flex area though. Those look like they're fresh out of the box ready to endow him with some sweet blisters. ;) Lovin' the progress. Have you gotten to the back much yet? The sculpt seems a tad uneven, the front seems very well defined but the back still seems a little smooth and baloony, as opposed to stretched slabs of meat like the way you treated the front. Just my 2 cents, he's rockin' overall.

Y/Haüss - :tu:

dustbin1_uk - thanks!

skullbeast - Thanks sooooooo much man! That did the trick! And yea - i was actually thinkin of having him holding a manhole cover in one hand like a shield maybe... haha - but i like your idea too! I might have to adapt that.. hehe.

TheProCreator - thanks.

GregStrangis - thanks man... Yea - the anatomy isn't supposed to be realistic or even real-world physics... I had in my mind more of a comic-book - larger-than-life kind of character with this guy... So it's all over the top... Hopefully it works out in the end...

SolidSnakexxx - thanks dude!

smeagol - thanks - i'll try to keep them coming...

jempix - haha - yea - that would be kool to see him and hulk face off...

Captain Sensible - thanks man - more of that to come...

gordon-v - thanks man... haha - I've been practicing to hone my zChi skills...

jp_smith - Thanks man - yea - i'm making the "clean" versions of everything first - then I'll make a dirt and wear pass on them later... (cuz I want to have a clean version of him in case I want to do something with him later...)... And yea - haven't touched the back yet... but the same treatment from the front will be extended to his back as well! ;)

Lucky_1 - Thanks man... Ur blabjab dude is looking pretty awesome too man! Love the last update... Lookin forward to seein his clothes...

--------------------------------------

Ok - so I spent today trying to get the boots into the model and mirrored over while preserving my layers, etc... Thanks a lot to skullbeast for the tip! You rock!

Anyways - made him some dogtags from his military past... also started working a little roughing out the folds of the pants - and modeled a belt for him.

1.jpg

The shoes looks a bit big to me... (wierd cuz I matched them to the feet) I need to do some re-proportioning on them I think... I have alot more to go on my to-do list...

However, my freelance work is starting to pick up again - so I suspect that updates are going to be fewer in the next couple days... But hopefully I'll still have enough spare time to finish this model in time for the competition! I really want to get this guy done in time! Having a lot of fun with him...

I hope Transpose Master works ok for me when I start posing him... so far I've only had problems with it... we'll see I guess...

Anyways - looking forward to your feedback as usual... thanks so much for the support! :D :D :D

jp_smith
01-12-09, 07:08 PM
I always have trouble with transpose master when I have a bunch of subtools with a lot of subdivision levels, something usually messes up or it'll crash when I go from the tpose to sud-d. I didn't want to risk it on this one so that's why I chose to pose my guy first then sculpt it.

chindian
01-12-09, 07:23 PM
jp_smith - Hmm yea - but I think if it does mess up with the multiple subDs... i have a solution... i'll just put all the subtools at like subD3 and delete all levels above and below that... then use TPoseMaster to pose it without the subDivs and export objs of the pose... to reimport as a layer into the file with all the layers, etc... I think in theory that shud work... hehe... I hope! :o

chindian
01-13-09, 08:39 PM
Hey guys - sorry for the slow down in the pace of this model... but unfortunately bills are calling and freelance work is keeping me busy... So I think production on this model is going to be a bit slower now...

I'll still do my best to keep the quality up and finish in time though!

Here's a little update on the pants:
Just started some pockets...

I'll have more updates soon I hope. :p
Thanks for the support and feedback!

Cool update, chindian. I like added pockets on the pants. Man I'm just in amazement looking at this Rampage...anatomy and he's such a freaking cool... I think with his single slap.....a normal human bones...would be crushed...to powder! :tu: :tu:

jp_smith - Haha - yea man - I've been trying for a while to land a studio job... but it's hard being an international... and especially now - no companies are looking to hire foreigners with the economy the way it is... but i'm hoping to get some good publicity from this competition that hopefully might manifest in a studio job for me... working payroll would be a lot better...
But freelance does have it's benefits too... I like being close to home... ;)

SolidSnakexxx - Haha - thanks man... That was the idea... just an over-the-top big hulking meanie of a beast... I'm excited to start working more on the face... Havent touched it still since the initial concept sculpt...
Your mantisman is looking really awesome too dude! Loving the texturing so far! I'm expecting great things from u dude!

GregStrangis - Yea man - I guess with the economy the way it is - studios are a lot more hesitant to hire internationals... But freelancing has me pretty busy right now... So I guess it's all good!

Ok - so I got some small updates again... sorry about the slow progress guys... but it's been hard managing all my freelance projects and doing this competition... I hope I can still finish it in time!!!!

I'm hoping to start roughing some pose ideas this week... I'm open to pose suggestions! So gimme feedback!

I NEED UR FEEDBACK:

Ok - so regarding poses... I just dreamt up an idea last night - wanted to run it by you guys see what you think....

I was thinking to have him hanging off the statue of liberty's torch... (So the base would be from the hand up to the torch... Now I'm not sure how big of a base we're allowed in the rules - I guess I'll have to check that out... But I kinda envisioned him with one arm - his claws ripped into the flame of lady liberty and hanging off the side - snarling and daring all who have the balls to challenge him! hehe.

I dunno - maybe it's a stupid idea... (plus it would entail modeling quite a bit for the base...) - but I just wanted to hear your thoughts on this...

Thanks again to everyone for your valued comments!

Love the model, great detailing and definition. Very nice indeed  :tu: .

Your Pose/Base idea, sounds cool, can't see anything wrong with it, did you have any other ideas too?

SolidSnakexxx
01-21-09, 07:18 AM
Hmmm, I also wonder about the limitation of the base or pedestal. But your idea sounds so cool...using Hand of Statue of Liberty as the base...It'd almost like integrating the full scene as the shear size of the hand / torch..... But it would be great for certain. :tu:

hi chindian....

this is.... so awesome! like i said. i love it!
such a baaaad mutated MONSTERguy who waits for his final challenge.

the word "torch" brought me the idea of "church" (dunno why)
just thought of how he could wait monster-like for an enemy.
King Kong came up in my mind...

i dunno if this is what you are after. but maybe i could inspire you a little bit.
just an idea.
But your idea is much cooler. i think they are a little bit similar.
the modeling aspekt is the question... :P

just a suggestion.
and yeah, i am not JP, so i cant do this 3d-views and such stuff... lol...
i hope you understand, what i mean....

Looks fantastic! How big is the statue of liberty hand though? I'm in the UK so I have no idea about it's scale. You may also want to consider that you need to do a turntable too and the hand may obscure part of your wonderful character.

Love the detail to the face Thaddeus!! Especially the asymmetry going on with it. Not sure about having a huge obstruction as a base tho for it will pull all the attention away from your monster that he deserves, unless you push all the contrast onto him it might work out. spimmy - thanks man! I'll discuss ideas later on in this post... hehe.

SolidSnakexxx - Thanks man! Yea - I've been rethinking that idea...

wethand - Haha - thanks for the suggestion man! Yep - something similar to that was what I had in mind for him hanging off the torch.

Captain Sensible - Haha - yep - the scale may not be such an issue - as this guy is huge - and if you look at this pic (http://www.loc.gov/shop/images/catalog/items/enlarge/enlarge_cohaandtol.jpg) - the guys in there don't look too small in comparison... But yea - I think it would get in the way of a turnaround and might hide alot of the model... so definitely rethinking things a bit...

gang - Thanks man!

GregStrangis - Thanks! Yep - Point well taken.

Etcher - :tu:

SOLcreator - Thanks.

cmoffitt - glad you like it... yep i'll be continuing the style over a large majority of his body.

-----------------------------------------------

Ok - thanks for all the awesome comments and feedback guys!

Well here's a small update again... It seems like it's just been such slow progress as I'm constantly shuffling between projects. I really hope I can finish him up... it's really fun!!! Looking forward to getting the sculpt done and starting textures. I think I'll be doing him totally textured, etc in neutral pose in case I might want to eventually make him an animatable character or maybe make a game model out of him... So posing will come later on...

1.jpg

I did some sculpting on the left arm - started to continue the gross skin finish that I started on the neck - continuing that creepy stretched thin, veiny skin... hope you guys like it.

2.jpg

The right arm is gonna have that bio-weapon thing I had described in the initial character brief... still not exactly sure what that will look like... I'll probably play around with it a bit... but hopefully it'll come out looking kool.

WRT the POSE:
I've been rethinking the statue of liberty idea - since it may distract and obstruct a lot of the model. Was thinking instead to do an action pose of him running through - maybe jumping over some debris like if he had just busted through a building with him sort of swinging that right arm back as if to get ready to fire his plasma blast or something...

Looking forward to your feedback and comments as usual! Keep em coming!!!

Ok - so another small update... (seems those are the only ones happening these days... sigh...)

Did some refining around the back and shoulders/traps... and modeled some accessories for his belt... more to come soon i hope...

1.jpg

HELP NEEDED PLZ! - I was trying to do some rips/tears in the pants today - but ran into some trouble... Originally I thought I could just hide some polys where the tear would be on a lower subDiv - say lvl3 or 4 - then extract poly with thickness - then just project the details back onto the mesh... that way i cud have subdiv levels as well as the tear.... however - that's prooving to be a little harder than i thought - the method works for the most part - but the tears look - well - less than awesome...

Any suggestions or tutorials you guys could help me out with??? I've seen some ppl do it on here - but it's turning out to not be as simple as i thot it would be... i'm thinkin maybe my method needs revising...

Thanks in advance! :tu:

Wow, what an excellent details...I especially like the veins and stuff. :tu: :tu:

As for the tears/rips..not sure if this would work....

1. Do the masking of the entire model and unmask the area you wish to create the rips.

2. Do a mesh extract...with some thickness...the new mesh extract should have the holes.

3. (Not sure whether the topology will be messed up or not) But you then could try to project the old (lower res) topology back to the new extracted piece.

Will have to get back and try ...in my machine as well.. Let me know how it goes...

SolidSnakexxx - thanks for the suggestion - hopefully i'll have time to try it again... really wanna get those rips in there... i think doin mesh extract then some sort of retopo might be the best way to go - only problem is that there seems to be some issues with the distance of the projection of the details - ie... it ends up projecting on the faces of the opposite side... due to the thickness... dunno. I guess i'll have to play with it.

JUPITER - Thanks

GregStrangis - yea - this is turning out to be a little more complicated that i initially thought it would be... but I'm sure i'll figure something out.

Hey man,

POSE IDEAS:
Ok - so once again calling on the awesome feedback of the zbc forums to help me out here... u guys gimme a vote...
I did some quick poses with the Sam rig (Lol - yea - try not to laugh too much:D) of some poses i am thinkin of for rampage...

1: The step pose... he's steping down off some rubble... ready to charge ahead and continue the rampage...
http://www.thechindian.com/rampage/rampage_pose01.jpg

2: Step pose alternative - basically the same base pose - but i adjusted his left hand to instead be on a pillar or some kind of vertical support... was thinking maybe his claws could be dug into it. Also the spine curve is a little more exaggerated and the foot is a bit more planted.
http://www.thechindian.com/rampage/rampage_pose02.jpg

3: The Anticipation - he's crouched down - as if ready to pounce!
http://www.thechindian.com/rampage/rampage_pose03.jpg

4: The Action leap - he's mid-air... leaping over some debris and rubble in the wake of his rampage....
http://www.thechindian.com/rampage/rampage_pose04.jpg

Ok - well - hope u can use ur imagination to think of rampage in these poses... hehe. But please give me your suggestions, comments, votes, crits, wutever feedback!

definitly? number 3 or something like that, the other one doesnt seems like its gonna work with that big body, i cant even do those poses :D......tho no 3 doesnt seem unique enough, u might want to look into something else :D, perhaps play around with cam distortion and such.....just go crazy :P

btw, the right arm doesnt look like it belong with the style, unless its somekind of steel material...hmm maybe diamonds ! bling bling

keep working!!! :tu:

chindian - those are all cool poses, but not exactly great for the skull crushing engine of destruction that is Rampage...except for 3 they all seem kind of agile and cat-like, more Spider-Man than Hulk. Who is that goofy little guy you used for posing?? ;)

- FoOD -
02-03-09, 05:00 AM
Jeez I was like what happened to Rampage ...and whos this guy

I like pose 4 but would like to see a top down view ...think you could swing the right leg further back ....and 1 is very cool but 4 I have always liked this pose :D

Very cool poses and very strong but I would get a character that follows Rampages body better ........you might find the body proportions dont feel as right on Rampage ;)

There's something simplistic yet meaningful about the 3rd pose. I would go for that as I think it would suit him best.

Aberrant
02-03-09, 09:06 AM
I know this is slightly out of place, but since you were previously speaking about mesh extraction (and you seem to have a lot of skill/knowledge of zbrush) I was wondering, how can I use mesh extration but have all my levels of detail? If I extract at level 7 that then becomes level 1 on the extration, and the reconstruct subdivisions button does nothing.

gregoconn
02-03-09, 01:33 PM
I think pose 4 is definately the best out of the options. The rest look a little less natural and a little awkward. Your forth pose looks very dynamic, and is also captivating, I'm excited to see this character in a pose like that.

samar vijay - werd

maxedwin - werd. Yep - i'm gonna redo the arm. I totally agree with u on the style contrast...

jp_smith - Hey - yea - i was actually thinking of him as agile all along - even tho he's realy big guy - i supposed he would be fast and agile since he was basically an engineered super-soldier... If u look at the new hulk movie - he moves pretty agile in some circumstances... like when he's jumpin from building to building, etc... I just thot it captured the "rampage" more... like if he was on an unstoppable rant of chaos through a city or something...
btw - that's the Sam rig i used to quickly rough the pose ideas - u can get it free on highend3d for maya... i love it. hehe.

- FoOD - - Thanks - i'll keep that in mind with the pose!

Etcher - :)

Captain Sensible - Ok - so chalk another up for 3....

Aberrant - I PM'ed u regarding this....

gregoconn - kool... I'm a little partial to 4 myself!

----------------------------------------

Ok - so hey everyone... I did up some rough poses based on the ones I had done quick concepts of yesterday... basically the 2 that most ppl suggested they liked...
Still very rough - and the hands arent really posed at all - but hopefully it should be enough to give you the jist...

From pose 4:
(I like the motion of this... it's missing the geo for the base though - his left arm will be on some rubble - supporting some of his weight - and i'm thinkin of having him holding a mortor shell or something in his right hand... The base is going to have a bunch of rubble and wreckage which he'll be running & jumping through.)

rampage_pose05.jpg

From pose 3:
More of an anticipation pose... didnt pose the hands here... but i'm thinking the left could be clutching some kinda broken debris on the ground... while the right is in some sort of powerful pose - like fist or something...

rampage_pose06.jpg

Anyways - looking forward to your feedback!

02-04-09, 01:46 AM
Hey chindian,

Pose 3 is looking better right now in my opinion. I'm sure it's quite tough posing him because of the sheer bulk.

Rather than having him holding debris, perhaps it would be more interesting to have something more specific, like part of a tank, statue, some sort of vehicle, etc. This would add a layer of backstory and provide extra interest.

Tremendous work so far, chin :tu: hope it all goes well

Chindian.. one word.. WOW! I knew this would be one to keep an eye on. Excellent job on Rampage (HE'S A BEAST!!! :tu: :tu: ) and concept poses. I like the jumping one of course lol.. but i think what spimmy said was right. Pose 3 does give him a better sense of weight and does kind of suit him better. The only thing i would change about pose 3 is the hands.. maybe have one as a "half fist" and the other in sort of a clawing/arched type of hand.. just my opinion lol i KNOW you'll do something spectacular regardless. i just can't wait to see the outcome!! keep up the great work!! :D :tu: :tu:

He's looking really good! :tu: I think poses 1, and 2 are too passive. Poses 3, and 4 are better, but still not powerful enough. I think he needs a pose, and facial expression that really show off his power, and fury. A pose that fits his name, Rampage. Would he leap over something, or would he smash through it?

Maybe something more like this:

Limitless_Thought2207 - Thanks man!

'Bout the pose: the rough of P4 looks very dynamic (mid-air jump); the leaning on the block with his right arm makes the pose more static ( jumping up/out from between the rubble) imo: you might wanna rotate the left leg a bit (attached pic).

Anyways, wonderful work :tu: ! What an inspiration!

And the base you´ve created is great too! :tu:

cmoffitt - Thanks man! Yea- hopefully I'll get that far in time!

Aberrant - This one the threads were modeled in xsi. However you could do it also with a texture-and inflate - or with radial-sim turned on and the count turned up to sculpt it all around a cylinder...

SolidSnakexxx - haha - thanks man!

wethand - Thanks! Glad u like!

Etcher - Thanks man... yea - the right arm is more of a passing touch than him leaning full weight on it - it's more of a practical thing for the sculpt - so that it would be able to stand up properly with support from the arm and foot on the ground. But I am still fine tuning the pose to be balanced correctly. I appreciate the input and ref!

Moni-Poroni - Thanks man!

--------------------------

Ok - I'm really happy to see the positive feedback I'm getting...
But it's really getting late in the game - and my work just keeps on piling up. Really worried if i'll be able to finish or not... I guess if it comes down to it i'll just have to submit what I have and hope for the best... (I'm praying to the zGods for an extension to be announced - but as of yet no answer to those prayers... lol. I cud really use one...)

But yea - It been awesome - hopefully I can get what I need done in this last week! It's been a real pleasure participating with you guys in this comp and seeing the progression of so many wonderful models! Best of luck to everyone!!! :tu::tu::tu:

Sorry no update here - but hopefully by the end of tonite i'll have some more work to show on the base.

Bless!

Hey Chindian, I didn't realize you would go to such lengths with the base! Looking fantastic so far.

I really want to see this completed, so here's wishing you the best of luck. Just give it all you can

petekasim - Haha - yea - hopefully i didnt bite off more than i can chew with the base! But I'll try my best to get as much as I can done before Friday... I can't guarantee anything tho...

fluxist8070 - Thanks!

spimmy - Thanks man... me too... haha!

------------------------

Ok - so got the highrez version into pose... now to do deformation corrections... pose specific detailing... texturing... finish sculpting the base... render and composite... UGH....sooo much to do!!!

rampage20.jpg

Well - i hope i can get it done or at least reasonably finished by Friday... doubt I'll be in the runnings for the competition tho... I see some really great works here that are sure to be topping the charts once they're finished! But it was definitely a fun competition to partake in... and I'll definitely finish up rampage for my portfolio.

Thanks to everyone for the support and encouragement! you guys ROCK!!!:D

:td: Don't be so negative. This model kicks ass! You need to knuckle down and do yourself proud. Don't start flagging now.

chindian
02-09-09, 08:24 PM
MonteCristo - not being negative... just realistic I guess... Got a bunch of freelance jobs running right now - so those take priority... I just know this week isn't going to be enough for me to finish doing everything i had in mind for rampage... but I will undoubtedly finish him - whether if it's for this competition or not. Hopefully it'll be done to a satisfactory enough level by friday so i can submit something decent tho.;)

02-09-09, 08:24 PM
model is insane!! A bad ass bat!:D

02-09-09, 08:26 PM
Well, that makes sense. Freelance work is a good thing if you've got it. :) But yes, this one's a keeper definitely finish it.

Hey there, chindian... I think it's quite tough doing a job and finding extra time for this..but for what I can say..your stuff's really high quality...and it certainly is kicking ass! :tu: :tu:

chindian
02-12-09, 12:48 AM
MonteCristo - will do!

SolidSnakexxx - Thanks man!

benny350 - Thanks

Captain Sensible - Haha - yea - i hope so too - but doesn't seem likely.

Etcher - haha - yes i will keep going - not sure if i'll get to the texturing in time tho... :-P

-----------------------------------------

Hey everyone... well - did some sculpting to the head...

rampage21.jpg

and also started some sculpting to correct the deformations in the pose...

rampage22.jpg

I definitely don't think I'll be finishing in time for the deadline... but I don't think I wanna rush it just to finish on time. I don't want to sacrifice the quality of the finish. So I'll just have to submit whatever I have done by friday.

Anyways - thanks to everyone for the support and encouragement!

02-12-09, 12:59 AM
The detailing is looking very nice, shame it won't be finished in time mate  , but I agree it's best to keep the quality high rather than rush stuff out. Your model really looks awesome mate!! :tu: :tu: :tu:

I really love where you've gone with this your character, and sincerely, I think you should complete it with all of what you have in mind, and not just what you think is enough before submission. Rampage is a sure winner with the way you are doing things my friend.

I have a simple question, and would love an answer from you: How do you pose such hi-rez meshes?? Transpose Master? or do you export, pose, and re-import??

In all, nice work Chindian..Both thumbs up!!!

02-12-09, 03:37 PM
spimmy - Thanks man... yep - i'll finish him up - i'll keep the progress posted in my sketchbook thread once the competition is done.

wethand - thanks. hehe.

SolidSnakexxx - thanks.

canndis - Thanks.

Teeto - thanks. I had to delete the higher subDivs on all the subtools to be able to pose him... so i posed it without the higher subDivs - then just exported OBJs of the pose using Subtool Master - and reimported them onto layers in the tool containing the full rez geo. Worked out alot simpler and faster to pose this way.

Etcher - thanks man!

pitchepuck - Thank you.

Ok - so here's my transpose video... horrible quality on youtube... :-P
But maybe it's better if u watch it in highquality... Here's the direct link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MVYtwDGnds

SolidSnakexxx - haha - thanks man... good the vid worked... wasn't sure - it had some weird stuff happen when i uploaded it to youtube... so that's good to know you can see it.

-----------------------------------

Well - pulled an all nighter - worked alot on the base...
No way I'll finish everything in time... but I'm hoping i can at least get enough that I can maybe give a nice black and white render for the entry... :-P

Wish me luck!

Ciao Trinidad!.....this is coming out just great! Considering how much your busy at the moment with work, commissions and whatnot.... pulling off a ZBrush model of this quality is nothing short of amazing. The base is very detailed I really like the mixture of hard edges and irregular forms in it.... really coveys the damage that this character is delivering!
I Think it's cool if you'll keep up working on it even after the competition it's over, would be a shame the other way around, letting it go after putting so much work on it...

chindian
02-13-09, 06:47 PM
SolidSnakexxx - Thanks... trying my best....

Captain Sensible - Glad u like....

AVTPro - I hope not! Almost done... hopefully i'll get it done before it closes...

spimmy - Thanks - workin on that now.

Lucky_1 - Thanks! Best of luck to u!

Ok - so I decided I'd do a turntable of what I got so far just in case I don't finish in time - so that way I at least have that for the entry...

So here's the youtube vid - just a copper shader in preview... didn't render it... got some minor tweaks to do to the pose and also some more details, etc... not quite where I want it to be yet...

Youtube is still saying that the video is processing - so hopefully that'll be done soon and it'll be up for viewing.

In the meantime - here's a quick screenshot of what i got so far...

i love those hulk-like characters in general :)
this one is a very cool interpretation of such a theme. the bomb and the fact he is runing make this one a very dynamic piece. i think it would've looked nice as a 3dprint....

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for the support!!!

Yea - it was unfortunate that I wasn't able to finish the textured version in time for the comp - but i'll definitely finish him up and post the progress up on zbc.
Might have to be after DW4 tho - hehe - considering entering...

As to a 3D print - that would be pretty sweet... so if anyone would like to sponsor me a print - i'm more than happy for that!! hahaha... :-P
But I think one of these days I'll have to invest in a print of one of my models... :D
