im assuming you want to mess with it in edit mode but once out of edit mode you can't get back in when picking another object.
best way is to make your sphere on a seprate layer and if you have to go back and re do that sphere delete that layer and then add another layer then go to your tool on the right and re bring out the sphere you was messing with.
and you can only mess with that sphere long as you didn't do any thing to knock you out of edit mode when you left it.

Welcome to ZBrush and ZBCentral, nefermu!

EZ is correct; ZBrush operates in two separate modes -- 3D edit mode and 2.5D paint mode. You can only modify a 3D object while you are in edit mode. Once you exit edit mode (by changing layers, selecting a different tool, etc.), the object is "snapshot" to the canvas and can no longer be edited as a 3D object.

When setting up your scene, it is wise to place a marker for each object as you create them (it's the little M+ button in the Transform Palette). As EZ said, it is also wise to put each major object on a different layer (at the very least, put each object that intersects on different layers).

If you find that you need to modify a 3D object again, you can return to the layer that it is on and either delete the entire layer or use the Eraser tool to erase just the offending object. Then reselect the original tool from the Tool palette and click on the appropriate marker. The object will instantly be redrawn as it was when you first dropped it to the canvas, but will be in edit mode once more.

Again, welcome! Questions such as this can also be answered by investigating the QuickLinks section via the link at the top right of each page here at ZBCentral.

Hi nefermu!

I'll second EZ and aurick's motions.

I'll also add my own "creative process step".

ANYTIME I have a tool I am happy with I save it as a ZTL. Every time. No exceptions. That way, if I find myself in your situation, I can clear the layer and reapply the saved tool for application and further editing.

(It also guarantees I have it if a crash occurs, or if I'm NOT thinking ((shush Mark!)) and start a new document.....)

Save those tools! I have 18 categories in my "toolchest" now.

Organic, Human, Insect, Animal, Cloth, Mechanical, Environment, Character, Emboss, Plant, and the last 8 are by Contract/Project heading.

My 2cents on the subject. :D

It's a good suggestion about organizing your files. I'll have to try that because my files are a mess. Much like my apartment. :D

Hi nefermu, and Welcome to ZBrush Central! :)

Please read the Marker chapter of the Zbrush manual for more information abour Markers.

Markers will allow you to re-edit an object after you have dropped your object to the canvas.

You can download the manual from the download page at Pixologic:

While on this subject. Call this a newbie moment ~s~ I looked at the multimarker tut last night. Thought I had it figured out... Guess it will take a few more tries. My question is, is it possible to make a full model. As in a head with eyes to export? Not that I'm anywhere near that stage yet. Just wondering if that's a goal I can aim for or not. Thanks.

hi, D. Lee :D

yup, that definitely is possible. just take care to keep the polycount at a reasonable rate when you turn the multimarker-tool into a polymesh. :) here (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001716) i gave it a try and made a whole figure.

Here's Kruzr's awesome MultiMarker Polymesh tutorial (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001686). I'm not sure if it's the version with notes or without, but either way should prove useful for you.

Wow, all newbies should be forced to watch Juande's and Kruzr's scrips on the multi marker. Answers a ton of questions. Thanks so much. Now... find someone giving away talent and I'm set.
