Action Hero: Dr. Root (Villain)
Artist: Chris Moffitt
Origin Story:
Dr. Kyle Rutmeyer and his wife Olivia, both botanists, began their journey in Northern Belize. Olivia, a paraplegic, had been prisoner to her wheelchair for several years after an accident in Peru. Since then, they have been searching for a rare plant called the "Petiveria alliacea" which is known to locals as "the root of life". This plant is said to have healing agents that can rid the body of many illnesses including paralysis. The plant is very difficult to find because it grows mostly in dark, cool areas and thrives in puddles and ponds, sometimes not visible above the water's surface.
They set up a lab near Cahal Pech just outside a vast rainforest near the edge of a massive cliff where the plant is rumored to grow. While Olivia stays at the lab examining several fungi samples, Kyle decides to head out into the forest in search of nearby streams and valleys where the plant might grow.
After several hours, Kyle had ventured deep into the forest. He comes across an enormous tree and remembers a local man describing this very tree as the "Yaxche" the Mayan "tree of life". Under the roots are large shaded pockets of earth where bats and insects live. As he walks around the tree, admiring the giant roots he notices a sheet of vines stretched across several of the inner roots. He leans in closer to take a look and feels a cool breeze coming through the vines. He pulls the vines apart to reveal a huge hole that goes straight down into the ground. He cracks a glow stick and throws it down the hole. The glow stick splashes suddenly in a puddle of water about 6 feet down.
Kyle decides to jump in and take a look around. Once inside, he grabs the glow stick and holds it up to discover a large room with a pond in the middle. Above the pond, several Mayan tablets hang suspended from the ceiling tangled in vines as if the vines had picked them up out of the water. Kyle drops the glow stick in disbelief. The light from the glow stick causes the water to glow green, engulfing the room with green light. Under the water's surface, Kyle sees something. Something very similar to a description he's only read about in books. The Petiveria Alliacea.
Overcome with excitement, he reaches into the water to cut away at one of the precious plants. Just as his knife touches the root, he feels a tremor inside the tree. It stops, so he continues to cut into the root. Suddenly, something grabs his feet and holds him firmly in the water. Looking down he sees the roots of the tree, wrapped tightly around his legs. He thrashes about wildly, leaning forward, cutting with his knife and trying to break free when suddenly several of the tablets above him slam down on his back. Vines wrap around his arms and back, then suddenly jerk him backward putting intense strain on his back. The remaining tablets slam into his chest and several roots rise from the water, wrapping around his torso and arms. His neck, head and back are covered in a twisted network of vines and roots. His skin begins to turn green as he screams in agony until finally becoming unconscious.
When he wakes up, the room is dark. The only light is from the entrance above him. His entire body is numb except for his legs. He manages to stand up with little trouble but the light coming from the entrance is blinding. He stumbles forward and climbs out into the sunlight, squinting. He can barely make out a large group of men who seem to have followed him to the tree. The men have automatic weapons and start yelling at him. Kyle doesn't recognize the language and can barely see their faces because of the intense sunlight. He lifts his arms toward them to try and calm them down when suddenly gunfire fills the jungle. Kyle feels a rush of adrenaline and wonders if he's been shot. Screams are heard between shots and within moments, all is quiet. His eyes finally adjust to the light and he looks on the ground to see bloodied bodies lying motionless everywhere. "What have I done?", he thought. "Who are these people?". He looks at his hands and is horrified by what he sees. His eyes, now fully adjusted to the sunlight, focus in on two horrific hands, both gnarled and twisted. His skin resembling that of bark. Where his fingers once were, are now twisted branches moving as if they were alive.
Kyle looks down at the bodies lying on the ground. A woman gagged and bound. Mangled and bloodied. "No" he thought. "Olivia? What have I done?" He drops to the ground to hold his wife's limp body. His hands open up and hundreds of vines pour out wrapping around her body, her bones popping and separating. "NO!" He quickly releases her and she drops to the ground. His eyes filled with tears and his heart filled with rage he looks down at his chest and sees the tablets stacked along his torso, held together by twisted roots and gnarled branches. "This is a curse. I shouldn't have come here. We shouldn't have come here, Olivia." But Olivia is gone. Kyle has nothing left. At 58 years of age, with his wife gone, he has no reason to live.
Suddenly he hears men coming through the trees, he knows they will find him and kill him. He waits for them. He waits for death. As soon as they are in sight, they open fire. Waves of bullets hit Kyle but he feels nothing. He should be dead but the plants that cover his body protect him and absorb the enemy rounds. He feels the adrenaline rush through his body again. "No. I will not kill again. I will not live with this curse." He turns and begins to run as fast as he can in the direction of the lab. He can't remember the last time he was able to run this fast. It feels invigorating. He feels strong. Alive. He loses the men in a matter of seconds.
As he approaches the clearing near the lab, he sees the rocky ledge that looks out over the huge cliff, high above the trees. He knows what he must do, but this new energy, this power, makes him feel more alive than he's ever felt before. At full speed he hurls his body over the edge but he feels no fear. He knows this will not hurt and he knows he cannot die. As the wind whistles through his body he sees the tops of the trees coming up fast. He feels a connection to them, as if they are a part of him. With his arms stretched out in front of him, his hands open like the mouths of ancient mythical beasts and thousands of vines and roots flow out from his arms, rapidly flying out to meet the branches flying past him. They connect and he swings through the air until he is just above the ground and gently lands on the forest floor.
It is peaceful. He sees the trees and plants differently. He feels their energy. He has always cared for plants but not in this way. "These plants are greater than mankind. We are destroying their home by polluting it and tearing down the very thing that gives us life. What good is mankind to this planet if they can only destroy it?" Kyle knows what he must do now with this curse. He no longer sees it as a curse. He looks up into the treetops and grins a sinister grin. "It's a gift."
Abilities:
- Super human strength
- Impervious to weapons and fire as long as some sort of plant life is nearby
- Complete control of nearby plants and trees
- Can produce any form of plant from his limbs
- Ability to extend vines and branches from his hands and swing through
trees at great speeds
- Roots on his back can extend out and grab objects, people or weapons

WOW! Is all i can say!
Damn, nice concept rendering. He sounds like a mix of doc ock, spiderman, and the green giant hah. Best of Luck.
Wait so one more thing with the story, if he can grow any plant on his body then can he make the plant that can cure his wife? So what else can he cure?? He doesn't necessarily have a reason to fight mankind I don't think if his main concern was his wife. Maybe that's a story for another time although I think it's pretty central to his character.

Wow great concept and design!!!
you really though well how you can take the most out of zbrush :)
good thinking of the organic and hard body modeling! this will be a challenge but if your 2d skills are as good as your 3d ones, then this will be top row :tu: :tu: :tu:
looking forward to see more

Hey thanks everyone for the kudos! Sory for such a long story. I really got into it. Working on the base mesh right now.
Aiman - Thanks! yeah, he's very agile like spiderman and is bitter about the death of his wife like doc ock and the plant he was looking for can't bring her back to life. Only heal her while alive. I guess his mind has been taken over by the plants and he inherently hates all humans so if this "curse" was broken, he would go back to being himself again. Hope that makes more sense.

Moni-Poroni
12-30-08, 11:55 AM
I have just one question left... :)
Is he a super hero or a villain ??
Because you wrote that he inherently hates all the humans..
Don´t get me wrong...
I just wanna interpret it correctly
Was your intention that he is a super hero for all the plants and the nature?
sazar26
12-30-08, 11:57 AM
wow what a awesome concept drawing and interesting story, caint wait to see this bad boy sculpted!
cmoffitt
12-30-08, 12:09 PM
Thanks sazar26!
Moni-Poroni - I guess he could be a hero to the plants but ultimately he is a villain because eventually his story would take him to the cities to destroy factories and oil refineries. Anything that is destroying our planet would be his target and that includes people. And to go even further, I thought about the lack of plant life in big cities and how he could tap into the city water lines and fill the sewers with plant life. It would look like Times Square in "I Am Legend" with grass growing up out of the streets. He'd be a cool Spiderman villain, me thinks.

Ok thanks for your explanation :)
But maybe you should announce this in your Thread or in your initial post??
So it would be absolutely clear for everybody..
Though I think it´ll be clear at your latest reply :)
Great stuff, I am with the others who liked the story, I just want to ask....what happens next. Hows your model coming along.

I love the design. Really, though, shouldn't his feet also be a root system as is his shoulders/hands?
Eco-villian!
bad ass execution. wonderful concept

12-30-08, 02:07 PM
dude that would be awesome. maybe hold a human head or crushing something industrial would lend more to the super villan-esqu attitude of this guy. if u can pull this off in zbrush as well as u can in concept i think we are lookin at a winner!

Thanks everyone for the compliments and crits! Here's my first go at zspheres (going for extra credit :D ) I've been putting off trying it this way for so long so, it's 'bout time!
Point - thanks, yeah it would be fun to keep going with the story and draw out panels and everything. I just started roughing out the model with zspheres. I'm having a hard time believing I'll be able to go from this to making it look like my concept but there's only one way to find out.;)
markrulz - thanks, mark. yeah, I thought of that at one point but then it might slow him down or make him look slower. I want him to be able to move like bionic commando or spiderman. Fast on his feet with all the power in his upper body.
henrysouth - thanks, Henry. That's a great idea, actually. I haven't really thought of the pose yet or what he'll be doing. I guess I better get some ideas rolling.

Beautifull concept.
Maybe you know that, but there's a man who have really bad health:

01-01-09, 07:24 AM
Thanks everyone! Here's a small update.
Solid Snakexxx- Thanks a lot! I hope I can translate the same look into zbrush.
Red Republik - Thanks, Jeff. I'm thinking he will be hurdling over something with one hand pointed to the ground and it will be open with vines and roots pouring out to meet the ground. Like he's extended to meet the ground in a "pole vault" sort of way. The other arm might be out in front of him attacking someone or something.
weirya - Thanks for the link! Yes, that poor guy was part of my inspiration. Freaky as hell, though.

I got a few more hours in today and I'm finally starting to get more secondary forms in on the upper torso and head. Still need to work on the head some more and give the lower body some love but I'm starting to think I might need to think about posing him before I get too carried away on the arms.

pgarcia - Thanks! I'm just under a million right now. Something like 958k.
I'm loving zspheres and I can't believe I never used them before. It's so easy and creates such clean meshes. I'm getting some of the large roots laid out around the Dr.'s body. I keep wanting to get started on the sculpting but I should probably pose him first. I'm still not happy with the head. He looks too chiseled and heroic for a villain and I keep thinking I should go back and make him look more like John Locke from "Lost". That's who I pictured originally in the story before his transformation. I thought I would do a quick photo paintover to see if he'd work and I kinda like it. What do you guys think?

01-03-09, 07:17 PM
I like the paintover a lot. He does have that VERY villianous look about him. Great progress so far!
yeah, its a good paint over , but more like your concept, as though he was in his 80s or just really weathered looking. super subtle facial wrinkles in my mind makes him look less villainous. nice zsphere work!

I love the concept for this man... Really excited to see how the 3D model comes out... keep on goin! I'll keep an eye on this one... :tu:
Haha, indeed thank god for zspheres, i cant imagine how you would take the roots and so much other stuff without zspheres. Anyways ur model is looking good. He is still too clean looking to look villaneous but dont fret too much, once you start adding more details and a twisted beard he will start looking more villaneous.
Also, Dont use the snakehook brush too much for your roots, I know it takes longer but use zspheres, the topology of the result is better so you will have an easier time sculpting them.
If u look at my moustache you'll see what I mean. The extent to which you can use zspheres.

01-03-09, 09:07 PM
wow, this is looking good, I like the zshpere roots. nice work.
Very good casting for the head!
The head on the actor is weaker, because it is rounder and there is more delicate, looser, older flesh. I think you are right, the chiseled look on the sculpt makes him a stronger looking hero and your idea to make him more human and fallable will add that extra touch.

My favourite concept! Very original and top-notch execution.
Only thing I would say about the model (and I think you hinted at it yourself),
don't make him too beefy, but keep it more gnarled and bony like in the concept.
Very cool!

goldo_O - Hey thanks! I loved your DW3 entry and can't wait to see what amazing stuff you do with Capt. Hornet!!
This is a small update but I managed to rough in the pose and record my transpose movie. I'll have to figure out how to post it later but for now, here's an image of the pose. I think it would be cool to have him spraying vines and branches out of his hand (the one that's pointing to the ground) almost like it's suspending him off the ground similar to the way iceman moves. He just leaves piles of vegetation wherever he goes that then grow all over the city turning it into a jungle.

richiewu1986 - thanks! yeah I was thinking whatever vegetation is coming out of his lowered hand, it would extend to the ground and be thick enough to support him on a base.
jtruthnick - thanks! lol. Dr. Ruth. Is she still alive somewhere thinking about sex? Gawd I hope not.
skullbeast - thanks! I know the Widowmaker will not disappoint in the pose department. It's already giving me nightmares in it's relaxed state. ;)
Not a huge update but did tweak the pose a bit and rework the hands. I also have my transpose movie but I can't figure out how to embed it into my thread. Here's the youtube link anyway.

I got a couple hours in tonight. I was trying to find some way to make an alpha that would give me easy roots but no luck. I just didn't feel like I had control so I'm going with clay tubes and inflate. It will take a while but I think it will give me the best results.

FoOD - Thanks, man! I'm pushing over 3 million right now.
dirkrulz - Thanks a lot! yup, that was intended to look like an ear. There are
roots going in and coming out of his ear as well.
GregStrangis - Thank you! No I have not rebuilt his topology. I'm not sure if I will need to yet.
onelung - Hey Adam, thanks! I may have bitten off more than I can chew.....Again! We'll see how it turns out. You doing DW4 this year?
I've been fiddling with the pose for way too long. I finally decided that he's going to be ripping the roof off of a hummer. Not sure if I'll have time to put someone in it or not. I managed to get most of the Mayan plates finished on his front. There are a couple more side pieces and a bunch going down his back that I still need to make. I decided to make the base mesh for these in max and used the smoothing group import plugin and it worked great! I hate all the beveling I normally have to do on hard surface stuff and that plugin does it for you. Pretty cool. I still have one more big fat root thing to make coming out the top of his back and all the little vine strands hanging from his lower legs...oh and more root pieces holding all the plates on him. This is going to take forever.

Teyon - Thanks! Me too!
Firerbert - Thanks! Yeah I plan on making some more geo to tie them into his body. I want them to look like they are really pulled tight around his torso.
Here's an update on one of his hands. I really want to add more fingers and loose vineage coming out of the sides but this will work as something to build on. I played around with some poly painting this morning. Not sure about it though. I need to get some reference together for color and texture.

Looking sweet so far!
I am about 3 weeks too late :o ... but I am curious to compare him with a more stocky / tree stumpy / thick-ish anatomy as opposed to the more heroic physique. However, he is a Dr...and called Dr. Root (not Dr. Redwood :P) ...so a more agile looking design might suit how you envision the character - and his name better.
Cant wait to see it when its done!

DAnconia - Thanks! No, I didn't record it but I can do that on the other hand if you'd like! :D
Wethand - thanks for the crits! yes, I agree there are certain ones that have a "ribbed" look that I should smooth out so it doesn't like rubber hoses. Good catch.
Captain Sensible - Thanks, those are great ideas. That paint job was just a test so I will definitely do mostly brown on the final. I like the knots and gnarled ideas too!
weirya - Thanks and thanks for the link. What a weird show! I've never seen that before but I could see the similarities in that character. Very cool.
McGilligan - Thanks! yeah, the body was definitely more stocky than the concept and I think he will look even thicker with all the roots and plates on him in the end.
I've made little progress unfortunately. I'm just getting used to polypainting and detailing using custom alphas. I need to stop all that for now and get all my elements in the ztool so I can do my final sculpting. Here's the zspheres for the back roots. I need to make the back plates and some other finger pieces.

Thanks to abyss103, maxinkuk, Harmonic, FoOD, SolidSnakexxx, jeffmeckley, zeke3d and slickytom for the feedback. Much apreesh! ;)
Harmonic - Man, I started recording and zb started chugging big time. I'll have to do it on one of the root pieces that isn't 3 million polys.
slickytom - Topology is probably going to stay the way it is since I wasn't planning on retopo-ing the whole thing so yeah, I guess it's finished. I just subdivided the crap out of it. :D
I made a bit of progress on the other hand tonight. I'm procrastinating getting the other pieces in but I will focus on that tomorrow. Just wanted to get that stupid asymmetrical hand done. (that was a really bad idea but it didn't take as long as I thought.)

FoOD - thanks! Yeah I made them but they're just a copy of a basic shader with the cavity cranked up.
gordon-v - thanks! I guess I will do a combo of sculpting right out of the leg along with a bunch of strands to break up the silouette.
I got a lot more done on the chest roots last night and finished the sculpting/detailing of the arms and face. I added teeth and gums and I tried to give him a very focused, viscious look but not all-out rage. I'd kind of like to see what you guys thought of that 'cause I'm not too sure if it's working or not.
There's too much noise right now across everything because of the temp shader I'm using. The cavity intensity is too high but I just wanted to show the detail is there. I'll balance everything out once I do the poly painting. There's still a lot more sculpting I want to do to this guy and I think the poly painting is going to be simple washes of color when I get to it. I want to spend most of my time in the final week in photoshop and render passes. Comments and crits welcome of course.

Love the detail on the armour, very believable. I knew this entry would be something special since the early posts, and your certainly making good on that promise :tu:
Can't crit the expression, it does exactly what you have described - focused determination rather than all out rage
I've been agonizing over the facial expression on mine for days - it's tough to make a woman look angry without turning her into a monstrous drag-queen! I don't think you necessarily had that problem!
Anyway, top work! I'm desperately eager to see the end result :)

I finished sculpting his back and made the plates for the back roots. I also started laying down some base colors and painted a few of the vines along his side. Hey thanks, maxinkuk, Finners, threetails, Etcher, Captain Sensible, Webhead and canndis for all the kudos!
slickytom - Thanks! Yeah I totally agree about the muscle separation. I inflated those areas a bit and I think that helped.
SolidSnakexxx - Thanks! This is my first time poly painting but I followed the tutorial in Scott Spencer's Zbrush book to try and get a successful skin. The roots were acheived using the cavity mask and just painting certain areas with black, then inverting and putting lighter blues and greens on certain raised roots.
So, I'm feeling overwhelmed since I haven't finished sculpting everything. I really want to finish this since I've put so much time into it already but I'm spending so much time on the painting (plus it's a lot of fun) I can't seem to get back to finishing the other sculpted pieces. I hope I can finish by next weekend.
I did give the face and hands some love though and tried to make a stone matcap (which did not turn out so great) for the plates. I may have to look for one somewhere. Pay no attention to the giant hand in the side shot. The camera's focal length is set to like 35 and I forgot to change it back. Crits welcome as always!

Very amazing head détails and color....WAO!
You have a really good color transition on your legs, keep going!
AAAAAArg!!
Incredible!!
Sorry you have posted in the same time me, so now I reply about this new post.
Now the roots are great and réalistic(BRAVO) but you have not enough poly for the polypainting  (btw its just a problem if you zoom in).
I love fingers and fine color on plates, better face too.
Amazing stuff on your character:tu:

WOw man! I'm loving how this is progressing... nice work on the textures - it's definitely shaping up well.... I'd like to see more bold details in the sculpt however tho... Like the bark parts on his hands, etc...
Good job tho! Keep it up!
This guy would actually make a pretty kool game character... hehe.

Looking great man! Might I suggest some smaller roots overlapping or holding onto the stone plates? They look glued on. Cant wait to see it finished.

Great progress! :tu: I love the colours and the whole details you´ve added.
very nice work on the mats and colors so far! For a constructive crit, I will say that the tablets on his back look too "dead space" and I would play with the design and layout a little or remove them. I hope that helps, keep up the great work!

Thanks to weirya, weirya (;) ), threetails, Nattawat_OBBI, KiVanDi, SolidSnakexxx, kaarthikeyan, Etcher, Moni-Poroni, - FoOD -, GregStrangis, benny350 and spimmy for all the kudos! Glad you like!
chindian - Thanks! Yeah, I really hoped I could get more bold pieces breaking up the silouette of the hand. (I think that's what you meant.) I may still be able to add that. He would be a fun game character!
goldo_O - Thanks, man. I hope so too!
slangford - Thanks! haha yeah, I had them hidden on the last post image. Is this better?
zeke3d - Thanks! That's funny you mention Dead Space. I was playing the hell out of that over Christmas break. Maybe it came out unconsiously! I wish I had time, I would remove the middle 3 and replace with one big one and flip the bottom one 180 degrees.
Well, I just didn't have time to do the base I wanted, which was going to be a hummer on it's side and Dr. Root ripping the door off as some poor sap is climbing out, about to get his head ripped off. So, I had to settle for an Exxon Mobil oil refinery that he is destroying. Not quite as exciting but I think if I add a few more small pieces of debri flying off, it will add to the action.
I've attached images of my base mesh for my pedestal and new pieces that I've added to his body. I think this helps the silouette with the small and medium roots instead of all large roots. I also finally got to the lower legs and just pulled the geo out like he's wearing bell bottoms and then sculpted the little vines with a few separate pieces around the surface to break up the sillouette. I still want to make some vines/ vegetation coming out of his hand and down around the pipe he's holding. I still need to texture the tanks and finish sculpting the details on the other 2. Anywho, crits and comments are more than welcome!

Very wonderful update, cmoffitt. Love the tiny roots making up Bell Bottom ;) A hero with some fashion style, eh? Excellent stuff.

Chris, I know this wasn't the base you had envisioned but it's a bad ass one regardless, and fits with the theme very well. All of the hard edge stuff was done in Max by the look of it? Looking at your anatomy I'd suggest this change to the right leg, he seems to have lost the sweep of his inner thigh and his sartorius attachment point seems to be off. Nice update man, looking forward to seeing him finished. :)
dr_root_js.jpg
That's a really nice base. works very well with the character  :tu: , and I love the flying debris bits!! :tu: But just wondering how are you going to attach the floating debris parts to the main mesh? (I think nothing should be floating is part of the requirements)

DUDE!! That's pretty awesome! Love the idea of the base... works well for me!
The texturing looks great already too...
I like the addition of all the little vines and stuff hanging off him - it really adds to it and helps break the silhouette and make it seem more chaotic... Keep it up!!! This is definitely shaping up to be an extremely strong piece! Good luck finishing up!

I like the juxtaposition between him and the base (nature vs manmade). Seriously nice work man! I hope you hit the deadline!:tu:

I have to say, this is a fantastic piece of work. A really dynamic and visually interesting character. I also love the way he's merging with the base. Great stuff.
