Story:
His name is Dr. John Garner
He was a scientist from the year 2050 and he built a time machine. He undertook only one trip with the time machine to the year 100 b.C. near old Rome. The time machine was destroyed with the arrival. Now he was in another time, in another land and he knew he would never again see his family and friends. However, he wanted to survive and do the best from situation. He is a genius and he owns the knowledge of his time. From the time machine wreck he builds technically highly developed weapons, armour and a flying vehicle with endless energy resource. (Everything in the design of the antiquity.) By his unique equipment he became invincibility. He received respect of his new contemporaries and was revered as a hero. The people called him "The flying Roman". However, he had many enemies and these wanted to know his secrets. This are his adventures....
Powers:
He is a normal mortal person.
His courage, his knowledge and the pieces of equipment built by him let him become to a hero.
Equipment:
1.An flying shield as vehicle
2.Specially glasses (with laser ray, night vision device, zoom objective, environment scanner, digital knowledge database from 2050 a.D.)
3.Indestructible light armour plating

Hi,
thankīs for the first responses.
As an attachment a picture of testing poses with the low poly mesh.
So i get more feeling to develope that character. (Itīs a 5 minutes task and itīs an easy way to locate problems in a early stage ;-)Testpose_1.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('119443','Testpose_1.jpg',1,0))

I would love to have this flying vehicle:D
And nice to meet somebody from good old Germany ^^
I live in Hessen too...
Good luck

I like the expression on his face in the sketch. It kind of reminds me of Duke Nuke 'em for some reason.lol
Also, I love the name....It instantly makes me think of all sorts of hillarious things. Very fun and original.

at first i wish you all a happy new year!
Here is the first result of the flying shield.

very cool!:tu: For me, it has a kind of airbrushed sci-fi "Flash Gordon" look to it. I loved that style growing up. Pollypaint I presume?
Are there going to be control surfaces? Like air-brakes, flaps etc?
JR_Rossi
01-02-09, 01:17 PM
Hi Crotalis,
yes...itīs poly painted and later i will create more details (Steering elements, Beams et cetera)
You have summed up it! Yes, it was my intention to create a retro look like in old SF Movies (Flash Gordon or Rocketer) or Comic (Trigan).
And here the current WIP stage

Hello,
i try to get all the equipment an dirty and used look.
Next time i work on the hero himself ... (Correction of the anatomie and the leaf will be replaced by clothings and armour :-)

Hey JR_Rossi, you have a good start. I like the flying shield. It might be cool to ad some more hard edges to it. There is an option to add a crease to and edge in the geometry pallet. The roman looks like he has some anatomical and proportional problems. Getting some reference and reworking his proportions and shilutte could make a huge difference. Looking forward to updates.
JR_Rossi
01-03-09, 03:26 PM
Hello Harmonic,
thankīs and i will think about the hard edges ( I know it can make the shield more interesting but if i must use this option very careful because i donīt wanna destroy the old 50īs aeroplane style and change it to a stealth fighter)
Yes your right with the anatomical proportions ... it was a quick and dirty test (1-2 hours) The hip is to small and some muscles are to big (Anabolica?) and his face are not the face of a movie star at the moment. I think 5 hours of intensive work and he is a pretty hero and he will get a first date with a girl :D
Crotalis

I like the details you've added to the shield! The rivets are a nice touch and I like the shape of the underside.
The Roman himself looks a little flat on his front torso. You might want to pull some things out a little more.

Hello there. Seems like you are having quite a nice start. :)
There are a few places which I think you can improve to make an even better result. I think the proportion around the torso/waist are a bit off. and the abs also a bit irregular. What you might want to do is sculpt against a good muscle reference. I saw this on one of the threads here....http://reybustos.com/03ra/ra.html It's quite a good start and give a good understanding on muscle underneath skin.
Look forward for more.

Thankīs for the comments.
Today i had some spare time to go on with the sculpting of the character.
However, it is still a lot of work to finish it and lookīs like in my fantasy.
I have also experimented with the materials.
Hope you like it.
One feature i miss in ZBrush: Lazy mouse functionality in projection master mode. (Is there a way for a work arround? Or have I overlooked there something?)
Best regards, Rossi

itīs not bad.... but itīs not perfect, too. you have to check the proportions of the body and in the face. take a reference photo to fix it.

Hello JR_Rossim nice update...seems like you are progressing quite fast. The overall concept is there...just a little bit here and there that can be fine tuned...But I think you already know that...mainly just the proportion thing, the overall shape/landmark of the head and such. other than that you are flying through this, Flying Roman ;)

Looks like you are onto the retop phase now.. Just a quick minor crit would be the model looks a tad stiff (But this may be fixed when posed I guess.) You might also want to check the ref of lips, upper brow....the side of the skull. Other than that you are on your path, go go Roman. :)

Hey JR_Rossi, this is starting to come together, good work so far. It looks like all the major forms are there, but i think they could use some refining. Also the silhouette could use some refining. A few specifics to look at would be
The legs look very straight, from the front view the should have a bit of an s shape to them.
Also his collar bone seems to be missing.
Hope that is helpful
Look forward to seeing more on this guy!

Hello and thankīs for the feedback.
I agree to you solidsnakexxx and harmonic.
I will check all points and refine my Flying Roman as soon as possible.
I know itīs not perfect untill now but i hope to create a nice Hero till the end of the timeline.
Itīs the first time that i build a human character from bottom up (without a prepared basemesh).
And itīs a great experience.
I like the ZBrush Community! Iīm sorry that i have less time to communicate with the other members.
But i will do my best :-)

WHOA! Nice improvement with those last updates!:D :tu: You might want to make the brow ridge (area above the eyes) a little less pointed, but it is coming along nicely thus far!
I'm really digging your flying shield the most though. Can I ask what material you used on it? Looking forward to your next update!

Hello community,
today i show you some pictures from the actual stage. I had worked on the anatomy and preparation of the subtools. All subtools are the base for the retopology work i will do next time.
Crotalis: Thankīs for the feedback. At this time i only use materials like RS_BlueChrome and for the skin a doubleshade material. But itīs not only the material who gives the apperance. A second light source is also in use.

Nice work on the armor JR_Rossi! It's really taking shape now. I'd suggest to give a little more of thickness to the hands, they looks a bit flat to me. Also, you should reduce the pinky and ring fingers, the ring finger shouldn't be as long as the middle one.
Keep it up man, have fun with retopo, I'm doing that as well these days :)

Hello,
today i have made a pose test. Transposemaster unfortunaly donīt work so as i hope. (Therefore the Roman is naked. :D) But i think the problem is the wrong usage of the tool by me.
In worst case i will transpose each subtool by hand.

Hello community,
now iīm on a point my computer is very slow and i canīt handle comfortable so many subtools in a high subdivision
level so that i must change my methodology.
My to do list:
1. Merge all subtools concerning the Roman (Body, Armour
and clothing)
2. Creating a new retopologized figure containing all merged geometries (like a shrink wrap model).
3. Z-projecting the old details to the new roman.
4.Polypainting and sculpting all details in HD-Sculpt mode and create
some additional parts like a sword and a cape.
5. Create a dynamic posed roman on the flying shield.
6.Create a base in the shape of a cloud.
I hope to finish all till the deadline. (But till now i learned so many things concerning the workflow, the software features and anatomy. Itīs a really great experience with an amazing addictively software called ZBrush!! )
Regards, Rossi
Ps.: SolidSnakexxx , yes the neck was twisted like my neck after a long zbrushiiiiiiing session last night.

Hello,
after testing the new methodology i will go back to the old method because i had a lot of problems with project all/zprojection to a new retopologized mesh. ZProjection donīt work perfect in symetrical mode. So i go on working by using an old stage.
Today i tested the transposemaster tool and itīs working well. (But only after deleting high subdivided subtools without lower divide levels)
I have actual the problem that i want to copy and mirror the boot with all subdiv levels. But there is no way so i must pose the second copied high subdiv boot by hand.
Here you see pictures from the todays polypainting result:

Hello,
today iīm not successful with the Flying Roman because the transposemaster tool crashes and crashes.
Iīm very frustrated. I try it with reduced subdiv levels (delete the higher!) or delete a couple of subtools. I restart ZBrush for every test again. (A test with the Demo Soldier works fine. But all subtools are only in a low Subdivide level 2 or 3) I work on a MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram. Any ideas? If thereīs no solution i will transpose each Subtool by hand :-/ next weekend.
Best regards, Rossi
Thankīs for the comment SolidSnakeXX > The red shirt is only polypainted to the body and the romans body counts 8 million polygons on SD-Level 7.
From my point of view itīs smooth enough. But i will modify it later in HD Sculpting mode ... if the HD Render donīt crash. In first tests it crashes also :-(

Hey JR_Rossi, sorry to hear you are having so much trouble man, Zbrushs instability can be very frustrating, I have nearly thrown my computer out the window a few times during this contests.
From what I have seen in other people threads there are a lot of people have the same problem with transpose master, and I have not seen a solution. If you are having that much trouble, I would suggest posing your sub tools one at a time. That is what I am doing, it takes more time but at least you are less likely to loose all your work in transpose master crash.
Good luck !

Looking good there JR_Rossi..the colors of choice are very vibrant.. :) the only think I don't like would be the left arm...which I think it's in a bit of awkward position.

Hi Jr.,
The details on your sword are excellent. I really like the way you handle metallic objects in Zbrush.
Very nice!

I hope itīs allowed.)
