View Full Version : Action Hero - Villian Kouri
Taken from a old story i once wrote: .:: Frostbite I ::.
In a cold world hostile to sapiens kin, a loneley figure walks in the snow
His poor figure only hides the great powers inside him: He is the one choosen by the nucleus to be the one who gives birth to the new sun. So, he has the gift and curse of ethereal life, being not dead, but still not alive.
Centuries have made him cunning and ever-conspirator, being capable to ruin an entire civilization.
Kouri was first seen in the great city of stone walking in the snow with no other cover than his mere skin, and with no memories other than the white desert. His hands were greatly wounded but still he was alive, and he sowed no damage by the cold. He was quickly taken as a frostbitten god.
The city ended under command of Kouri, and soon he was ascended to great priest. Henceforth, he had the honor to talk directly with the nucleus.
The Nucleus instantly recognized his kin and told Kouri all his past and all his probable futures, and gave him orders to give birth to the second sun.
Kouri Fled from the city of stone taking the nucleus with him and let the city die under the attacks of the barbarians.
His abilities come from the nucleus, being the new "Carrier of the nucleus" give him the power of omnsicience, infinite strength, and a scorching touch that turns anything that he desires into ashes.
.:: I have been writing this story sicne 2002, but I never figured out if kouri was a hero destied to redeem the earth or an ally of the polluted, i leave this to your precious minds ::.

Cool story.....I think you've been fleshing out ideas for quite sometime! So it's quite well distilled. Look forward for more. :tu:
Thx SolidSnakexxx... that's the way I like to make stories.... Frostbite is a story that has taken me a lot of time... I have another similar story named "Verkelt" but it was not suitable for this contest, been plotting it since i was a kid...
Finishing the face.... the topology is a mess  but I don't care as long as I have retopo

Hey buddy! Welcome to the forum!
Progress looking good!
Friendly suggestions:
Careful not to over inflate the head too much. Sharpen up the detailing around the ears.
Nice concept, great progress and looking forward to seeing more!!
Thanks dustbin1_uk, it's true... i have to work a little more the ears :D

Here's the Zspheres body (i make a lot of subtools cuz my laptop is reeeaaaally slow... cant wait to get into the school's pc's), finished the main figure of the body, i proceed to make the arms.
Finally decided the final pose for him

Looks like the model's been progressing very fast. I'd definitely recheck some more on the nose and the lips areas a bit more, I'm certain you can tune up and make it great.
May be you should start low (lower than the first post-in red wax material) as you will find that at the lower resolution you can gain a lot more control over the entire shape... Sometimes, for me, when I started out at high level, the original shape of that high level tends to dictate the outcome and look like blobs.
Other than that I can see you are utilizing the ZSphere quite well, and I'm looking forward for more stuff posted. Keep up the work and good luck :) .

I agree, even if your character is ment to have a characatured style it should have good anatomy to support its form, your nearly there i think you just need to sweetin it up a little and match the quality of your hard surface modeling of the glasses, look forward to seeing your progress.
I think this is better : ) some major anatomic corrections and he es ready now for transpose

Looks like you are working on the overall look/proportion again which is good.
I think there's something about the nose wings that bothers me, may be because they seems disconnected and looks like 2 bulgy ball attached on the nostril? The tool I might suggest for the area are either the inflat brush or magnify brush as for me it seems to allow good blend around the nose area.
Kouri just went to the plastic surgeon.. i dunno what nosewings are... hope this looks better than the bulgy balls
NewNose.jpg
nice zsphere/retop work man keep it up!
THe worst of all curses has came: THe hands.
Something good is that his hands are not complete, he has lost some "Falanges" (sorry for my poor anatomy-related english)...
just googled it ---> Phalanges
the right hand
pointing finger's distal and middle phalang
little finger distal phalang
Some reference pics to aid me, and the zsphere build

Hey :) your are really fast
I´m a little bit jealous... I´ve just started ^^
I know the probem with the hands ^^
And I´m sure that they will drive me crazy again when I´m going to sculpt them
Maybe you should upload another image ...more focused on the hand
and maybe in preview mode?
So we can diagnose the problem better... if there is some;)
There's another pic of the other hand.... think the thumb should be a little closer to the other fingers...
In the story kouri only has tree fingers in the left hand : /
OtherHand.jpg
I found a problem myself about the right hand and it is that the arm is way too long...
wandering in this forum i found a really good way to make hands, i dont remember wich super-hero i took it from, but when i find him again im gonna thank him : )

Hello there.. ISK-86, The nose looks much better now. I think the zsphere set up for the hand/fingers is quite fine. I think it's in a good shape that you won't need to retopologize.
Just in case someone might be interested in the zsphere set up, the original contestant who posted this zsphere construct is Bingo_Jackson and his know how can be read in this : http://www.pixolator.com/zbc/showpost.php?p=514632&postcount=22
BTW, don't forget to leave some Transpose action to the posing process as well(Just seeing many of your pose have been constructed throguh the zsphere already). Other than that, you are doing it at quite a fast pace. ook forward for more. :tu:

Nice work with the ZSpheres. Your character has a lot of personality and the story is a very original entry. I like it a lot.
Thanks solidSnakeXXX

Another two pics of the hands...
I like to pose them and then make some extra zspheres... that gives more hand-form and needs less tweaking

In an unknown hallway, the great priest of the city of stone walks towards an unexpected meeting...
Otro Kouri.jpg
The great priest meets the carrier of the nucleus, his god, his oracle, to know the result of the war menacing at his walls
Kouri - ...and tell me before I give orders to the army, the truth of all truths: How to get rid of the darkborn sons of the nuclei, to finish with this shameful war!!!
Carrier - So you want to know the truth of all truths? Yoy desire to see the ending of this war? Is that what you really desire?
Entrevista.jpg
Carrier - Are you willing to carry the truth?
Kouri - Yes...
Kouri.jpg
(no pic) Carrier - The nucleus has become bored of your prayers, the barbarians have allied with the polluted kin, and I, your god, your oracle
Carrier - I am the most powerful darkborn son of the nucleus!!!!

ISK-86, Looks like at time you were dedicating a lot of time and energy in creating the mini comic. It's wonderful like his back story.
The hand's shaping up really nicely... Only finger I see having some anomalies are the thumb.. and the index fingers. May be all you need would be some smoothing out around the folding areas.
Also for the cloth, I'd suggest you to subdivide the shirt to around 700,000- 1 million poly before putting such a fine detail. As if you put the detail at lower res once you go higher it'd be quite tough to replicate and match up the details you've put in. So this type of finely detailed pattern, I'd put last and avoid said issues.
Great Progress and Happy New Year to you!

12-31-08, 08:33 PM
Hi ISK-86, did you create a seamless texture with DSC-0272.jpg? If not how did you apply it? Roller?
The pic is ony a "I desire my texture like this" reference, I modeled a clothe like that in maya, and created a 2d texture projection, to catch a "Absolute Z channel"
You can do this in zbrush with ñ "Tilde" key... (but i do not feel really confortable with it), and use a MRGBZgrabber (weee i remembered the name!!!)
or a Alpha from doc
For a reason far from my knowledge, roller didn't work for me... so i had to use a stich brush and change de alpha.
Giantsun
12-31-08, 10:01 PM
Yes, though for some people with dif keyboards it isnt the "~" key.
Did you use a massive size texture and used it like that or went with a small alpha and worked it in with the stitch brush? Thats a massive task.
Thanks for the reply, always like to ask these things to find out what people are doing. :tu:
I tried a lot of things.... first i tried using the texture with a stencil, but i didin't like the result, i also thougt abouth drag-texture all the clohtes, but i thought it would be way too slow, so i finally decided to use the stitch brush to get a quick, clean texture.
What i am doing now is making a fade to the texture, so i dont have the seams

Getting this pattern on the cloth to be seamless is quite interesting. What I would do is utilizing the stencil method instead of relying on the brush to do the work. As with Stencil you can "repeat" the alpha and scale so that it cover the entire cloth piece.
1. To activate the Stencil all you have to do is load the alpha in the alpha slot. Then go to Alpha menu and hit "MakeSt" which stands for Make Stencil.
2. From there you can go to Stencil and adjust the Repeat value ..oh the neat trick is also using wrap so you can wrap pattern around the the folds.
3. Use Space bar to navigate the stencil around your model.
4. Use the Brush to lightly build up the pattern with the Stencil on. (Kind of like Live Masking)
5. To deactivate the Stencil, simply go to Stencil > and unclick "Stencil On"
Yes... i explored that before, but as i said, i didn't like much the result... just feel like i have a little more control in places like the arm fold using the brushes.... Nevertheless I think this will be way too useful in the pants, or in the front and back of the shirt....
Wich brush would you recommend??
I used standard the last time... but it looked a little yucky at almost 1 million poly :p
SolidSnakexxx
12-31-08, 11:00 PM
The Clay Brush or Standard Brush does a pretty good job for this type of thing. For me, I'd apply at very low ZIntensity like 8-12 as the stencil's locked on the model, we can lightly build up the pattern. Also you can turn on/off the stencil once you have applied your stroke.
the best advice I can give to you is, forget the details, focus on the larger parts, no amount of milking of micron sized cloth texture will save global or small forms from looking erroneous. This competition is a perfect place to really learn this. No te aguites amigo!
jajaja.. es realmente dificil hacer que me aguite, la verdad me siento como en las nubes solo de estar aqui
He aprendido tantas cosas y he hecho cosas que ni si quiera sabia que podia hacer!! Gracias a todos por su apoyo

I have learnt so many things and i have done things that I didn't even knew I could do..!! Thanks everyone for the support
Zeke3d: Thanks, I will focus a little more the global and mid-size forms, :o
SSxxx: When I finish the mid-size and little size details I'll try to have fun with the stencils ;)

I feel you ISK-86, but I think its always best to think of small details as dessert after your finished with all your chores and dinner. I know its hard delaying the fun stuff, but it will make you a better artist.

Yesterday I struggled with a mortal disease called "Internet-is-down-osis".
I used that day to do the things humans do, like mowing the lawn, demolish a wall in the house, getting rid of the crazyman-beard, letting the sun touch my pale-white skin, and watching a tv series about a funny doctor with a walking stick
And after a heroic battle with my ISP, i can again post a little of my progress

Hey buddy, you're doing great!!
One thing though, you do realise that you have to make a video showing you transposing this guy?
Just thought I'd remind you now in case you didn't you realise yet. ;)
 I uploaded a youtube vid of transposing him before mid-res sculpt.... is'nt that transposing???
Think I need a better translator.... T__T
If its the video in your thread, it will have to be at least five minutes long according to the rules. I at first did not want to do the video, but now have found it fun and distracting. ;)

Good update as always. You have added the sweater and hand bandage. I really like the goggle and the material you put. BTW, Was it hard for you to do topology around the fingers?
Four days of that mortal illnes... posting from a cybercoffe (Internet rental:cry: )
An apologize about retarding my update posts... and my overall work
SolidSnakeXXX: Easy... not; but not too hard to not be done... (thanks for the translation venda=bandage) just playing around with polygroups and hiding/showing them when re-topologizing can make it a lot easier
-------------- UPDATE ---------------
Made a seamless texture for the sleeves detail (methinks I'll have to do again the overall sweater texture.....)
036_Textura_Sueter.jpg
37_Tiling_Test.jpg
and here is how it works..... looks nice for me
-------UPDATE--------
the texture applied to the sleeve.
Finished the second sleeve and applied the new seamless texture to it.
I'm thinking that I'll need to split the sweater into tree pieces (sleves, front and back) to give it a lot more detail.
038_Detalles_Sueter_2.jpg
039_SueterTerminado.jpg
Looking at the rules i understood that I could keep my workflow intact, and in the "00.00000001....% Probability of winning, (after a Planetary Alignment, and the mayan end of the world, obviously)" i should make it "3d printable"
So... i will take advantage of that and make all the cape's detail in the Proejction master using zbrush's "0-0-0" black
Aaannd.... the new to-do list:
040_ToDo.jpg
1.- Send Kouri to a good dentist
2.- Send him to buy jewlery (Broochs for his cape would be nice)
3.- Send him to buy some more clothes
4.- The most difficult: Figure out a good way to do hair in zbrush
SolidSnakexxx
01-05-09, 06:16 PM
Really great update to the pattern on his cloth. :) I'd love to see his outfit with thick furry like hair. Would be cool. Keep up the good work.
Almost finished with the hair
Starting with a cube, and sub-d it
41_Cabello_01.jpg
42_Cabello_02.jpg
Then moving around the hair to place it where I want... reaching the million polys with a horrible stretching.... lets call Super-Retopo!!!!
43_Cabello_Retopo.jpg
Just making it so I can have a little more detail without using too much polygons...
SolidSnakeXXX: YEah....! that would be really nice.. i'd like to see him like that too.... but I have no idea of how i can do taht... :o maybe with a zillion zspheres....
After retopo I make some nice poly groups, so that I can have a litte more control over the sculpt (Hiding and showing)

The hair still needs a lot of detail.... and maybe some hair threads made out from Zsphere chains over the face....

Fantastic.... His my Favorite!!! Like me without the two last fingers of the left hand!
Today was a bad day... I got a mallet stricking in my left hand thumb and pointing finger... the flesh of the ponting was cut with the strike and the thumb's nail hurts a lot when I hit spacebar.....
But posting is a primary-necesity
A quick detailing in the hair.... and... that's all for today  ... im getting tired too quickly due to physical and psichological wearinees from the work. (8-12 hours a day)

Hey ISK-86
Keep the thread moving. You are one user that is really sharing and we all appreciate that. I was wondering if you could maybe make a quick video of how you did the feathers. Seems to be a very cool technique. Keep the posts up.

The pose I think starts to come out quite well..The thing you might want to put more would be the sense of weight. So the pose's more believable. But it's nice progress so far. Look forward for an even more action packed-pose. :tu:

a quick sketch for the utility belt... or however it's called...
first of all, i like to split it in polygroups that I think will be useful

developing nicely!
but the retopo process stands before you? good luck! happy i'm done with that :P
cant see this one finished!
keep goin!
I usually use retopo for making things "Out of nowhere"...
Thats an easy way of making really nice and quick meshes
The cape, the feathers, the bandages, the horrible sword, all of them started as a fake.retopo thingy...
I'm just too lazy

This is coming along nicely! keep it up ;)
After a terrible week with "Sculpter's Block" i finally had a great Idea to continue my sculpt: The brooches.
In the frostbite world, the basis of the food chain are the anaerobic algae wich make food directly from the hydrogen of snow, small insects feed from them, and the small insects are the big insect's food.
So... in the frosbite story there aren't any animals but nasy furry insects
BrocheEscarabajo copy.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('123619','BrocheEscarabajo%20copy.jpg',1,0))
moni... i'm not sick, just overwhelmed with work :(
SSxxx thanks for the comments... I made a great effort with the cape (first time I used projection master :p )
First of all we create a poly plane... make it hi-poly and then apply a texture to it (colors from texture), grab a zsphere and start the retopology....
60 - Broche.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('123714','60%20-%20Broche.jpg',1,0))
after that we split the polygroups
60 - Broche Polygroups.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('123716','60%20-%20Broche%20Polygroups.jpg',1,0))

Hi...coooool you´re back :) :) :)
Ummmmm... being overwhelmed with work is much better than being ill...don´t you think so ? ;)
I really like what you´ve created
Great idea :tu: :tu: :tu: clean mesh :tu:
Muy bien:D
Kind regards
After a messy and clumsy hard-surface sculpting, I realized that it wasn't looking.... hard-surface-ish
So... my nextr move (I thougt): Retopo, crease edges, smooth...
Make the brooch out from three or four pieces and then unite them with subtool master........ .. . .
Hope it's not another mistake
61 - Broche Retopology.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27123835%27,%2761%20-%20Broche%20Retopology.jpg%27,1,0%29)

Another great piece! :)
I don´t know how you could use it...but I really like the temple-idea :tu:
The material looks so natural. Like a sandstone. How did you make it :) ?
Just used a clay brush with a hard focal shift.... and lots of dirty z-fun (fast strokes)

Well this might be my last post in this thread... there has been a lot of work for me and I have made de decission to oficcialy leave pixologic's contest.
The only things that come to my mind are this
- I feel proud of myself, because I have done things that a month ago I would think to be out of my reach.
- I feel proud of pixologic, for giving us artists, big and small a chance to learn and teach each other (and also for Zbrush )
- I feel proud of the artists here. Gohanf22, Moni-Poroni, SolidsnakeXXX, thanks for all your friendly posts and all the help you gave me, I consider you now as my friends, and if it ever happens that you step a foot in mexico, doubt not to call me, cause I'd be honored to meet you personally. (at least in MsN)
Good luck to all.

hey dude im sorry to hear that your leaving. actually your going to make me cry cause all the inspiring i did didnt help as much as i thought it did.. for all its worth, you were doing one hell of a job bud. im sorry to see all of this work is bogging you down. i wish you could stay in but its your decision. making people do what they dont want to do isnt right so i cant make you do stuff you dont wish to do. good luck with finishing kouri in the future bud. btw, if i ever am in mexico, i will hit you up.;)

Hey man, ISK-86, you have done such an excellent job on the Villian Kouri...and it's kind of to know you will not complete this guy for the contest.. I know it's tough working and also keep updating the entry... But I'd still love to see this characte finalized one day.

Villan Kouri was a very good concept indeed and there were some very clever ways you used Zbrush that were really intriguing. Sorry to hear about you leaving. No doubt I'll see you again around here. Best of luck for everything.
Ok... you made me cry  (even though I can't stop laughing....), Im a little depressed... In fact I'm way too depressed
Gohanf22: Thanks... I have no aim or gaim or however it's called... hope we can g-mail each other... stop reading my thread and begin pulling those pixols!! you have less than a week to finish the pose!
SolidSnakexxx: I >>REALLY<< admire your work, and best wishes for you to win the big prize :tu:

I really enjoyed the originallity of your entry. Your entry was one of the most unique entries for me. I certainly hope you keep up the excellent work. Thanks so much for assisting in my education. Keep up the excellent work. I didn't get a chance to post as much as I would like on your thread but I certainly watched and apprececiated.
Please note that the rules require that your entry be updated at least once per week. If no updates have been made on this entry within the next 48 hours I'm going to have to disqualify it.
Something I have to do before the thread is closed
Here is a step by step for the feathers in kouri's cape, first of all, the result
005_Fina.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('127450','005_Fina.jpg',1,0))
Begin with a single poly plane, making it polymesh3d,
Select a Zsphere and go to Tool > Rigging > select mesh... pick the plane
Then go to... Tool > Topology > Edit topology
make the initial shape of the feather.... and make it a polymesh or adaptive skin...
001_Pluma.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('127451','001_Pluma.jpg',1,0))
--------- IMPORTANT -----------
After making it, paint it with the base texture, later will be almost impossible.
After this is only duplicating the feather and modifying it properly
002_Plumas.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('127452','002_Plumas.jpg',1,0))
when you have a bunch of them, you can merge them "Subtool master way" and have two or three iterations of feather clusters....
the result should look non repetive
004_Muchas_plumas.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('127453','004_Muchas_plumas.jpg',1,0))
And finally , give it some gravity or another quick deformation.
That's all, simple.
Good luck to all :tu::tu::tu:
