by Jeff Miller

Real Name: Mar Chue
Affiliation: Rogue Opperative
Previous Affiliation: Chinese Military
Powers and Abilites: Enhanced spead, strength and stamina, heightened reflexes, and the ability to fly.

sparrow.jpg

Origin:

Being born a girl in rural China under the one child policy, can sometimes be a death sentense; being born a baby girl with deformities, is most certainly one. Sparrow's parents needed a strong boy to help with the farm, not a girl with wings. Still, they were not murderers, so they pleaded with a young army officer who was passing through their villiage to "get rid of her", and he reluctantly agreed. His name was Jianjun. Before he could kill the child, however, they formed an instant bond. Jianjun decided to secretly raise the child as his own. He named her Mar Chue, which means Sparrow. As she grew, Jianjun was shocked by her strength and agility. When Mar learned to fly at the age of 5, Jianjun's loyalty to the Chinese state took over, and he decided to present her to his old army superiors. His loyalty was rewarded by having his adopted daughter ripped from his arms. Jianjun was placed in an asylum, where no one would belive his stories of a winged girl. Sparrow spent the next 15 years being trained by the Chinese military in their secret super-soldier program, which was meant to counter that of the Americans. As her powers grew, so did her loyalty to the State.

First Mission:

Jianjun eventually escaped from the asylum, and began his search for his daughter. The military learned of this, and decided to send Sparrow on her first assasination mission. She struck swiftly, and without warning, but while Jianjun lay dying, he revealed his identity to Sparrow. Her heart, which had grown cold over the years, was torn open. She returned to base and did not reveal that she knew who her target had been. Now her loyalty is shaken and she must decide her own future...

i have been giving alot of thought on how to do the wings in zbrush, but i will have to do some tests to see what works. i want to try and do the entire character in zbrush. usually i start in max, but since it is a zbrush contest...here is the basic body made out of zsphears

Hey Red Republik, great back story and I love the sketch. Can't wait to see her finished. Your base mesh looks decent. Maybe add a few edge loops to the face and it should work at very least for the design sculpt.

Firerbert: haha, the promo piece was easy, because i wasn't competing with anyone.

Harmonic: yeah i jumped into the model too quickly (i didn't even add fingers in the zsphere tool), so i will retopologize her soon

Aurick: good catch, thanks

here is my last update for the day. now that i have a base female body i can paint over that for some more detailed exploration of her costume

Gosh damn it is about time!
Legs, awesome (except for the knee guard).
Torso, awesome.
Finger tips to elbow, awesome.
Boot, ah, scary. Not a fan of the tip of the boot. I can see how they take the resemblance of a birds foot, but the front of that boot hinders the form there really bad. Either give her bird feet, which I would not recommend, or reshape the boot so it isn't so platform. Think about the agility she is supposed to have, and those boots are a complete contradiction to that. If anything I would say make her barefoot, so it is easier for her to perch on buildings and such.
I really like the shoulder pads, and the way the armor is layered up is spectacular!

Captain Sensible
01-12-09, 09:11 AM
Wow! Really nice work on her outfit. My only crit (other than the boots) is that the feathery pattern should be present in her lower half too somewhere. Maybe you could incorporate it into the knee pads. Anyway it's good to see more on this one. I really wanna see the end result!!! :tu:

luis2008

Captain Sensible: good point about the feathery pattern. i will try to work that in

animastur: lol
goldo_o: i was trying to make her look 19-20ish, but with the hair(which is still temp) she looks younger doesn't she?

so does everyone hate the whole boot, or just the foot part? here is a quick change to make the bottom part more "normal."
boot.jpg

jp_smith
01-12-09, 11:40 AM
Red, I think you shouldn't just give regular boots. I think they should look talon-like in some way, that's part of her whole concept, otherwise she's just a chick with wings. maybe she has two kicking blades that extend from the toe of the boot that she can use in combat and a spur on the heel? You could carry the theme through to the gloves, maybe she has curving claws built into the forefinger, index finger and thumb? I also think, if you have her in a flying pose, (and because she's got wings that would make sense) you should go for a flowing wind-blown billowing hair look. What do you think? She's looking great man! :tu: :tu:

pepe48
01-12-09, 12:16 PM
Well... The boots look fine, but I think they don't fit the character. They're not birdlike at all, even with talons, I suppose. Maybe a simpler design, with forms more alongated, like the feather-like stuff on the belt... I don't know. Just a thought... Keep going 'cause its looking really cool!!! :tu:

Gohanf22
01-12-09, 12:35 PM
i agree with jp. they should look pointy at the end. not like you had before which was dull but like a sharp point, like talons as jp said. i think they should be like that.:D

ps. - your doing one hell of a job. i wish i had your talent.

Very beautiful character, excellent work.

Firebert
01-12-09, 03:40 PM
I love the legs and shins... don't get rid of those! I think most people are just thrown off by the foot portion of the whole boot.

JP makes some good points, and I know how toes make all of us feel, especially on personal time budgets like these competitions. Create effective designed pieces that are moderately easy to model with little time consumption. I stand firm on the concept of bare feet. I think that adds more to her character than any shoe, boot, sandle, or crazy mechanism ever could. Just simple feet that are extremely dirty. Maybe they are slightly deformed, like closer to gorilla feet, or the kind from Aeon Flux (those were actually quazi silly on screen)... I dunno, just throwin' ideas out there, but I really think the character would be far more successful and complete with bare feet.

Her costume as a whole already portrays the bird like curves and angles to mold with her name. More importantly, feet are essential for a bird's basic survival. No mere boot will work here for the design. You'll either have to design some really crazy boot and go through fifty concepts to find something that is kind of going to work, or keep it entirely simple and basic and true to the functionality aspects of character design.

Not trying to be an arse, but wanted to just put out my position.

*sparks
01-12-09, 06:14 PM
I definitely like the high heel talon look of the boot. Make the part where it touches the ground flat so she can walk around but have blades that stick out from the toes, perhaps something with a hinge so they can flip up when not in use..like a cats retractable claws

SolidSnakexxx
01-12-09, 06:26 PM
Red Republik, the new shoe design looks nice. But I think the high heel version looks much sleeker....but again this is your choice :) Either one, the model looks amazingly beautiful :tu:

zeke3d
01-13-09, 05:43 AM
as for the boots, somewhere in the middle? I like morphtarget for just this kind of thing in zbrush, feel like you took something too far or lost some of the magic you had in the model you had before, just do a MT 50% of the way. even then, nice work red republic.

digichu
01-13-09, 05:58 AM
I really like how clean your details are, good job man.

If I can put my 2 cents on the boots, I would say I like the second design way better then others, it looks more streamlined and has more "flow"; works really well with the subject.

Webhead
01-13-09, 03:21 PM
Nice character. I agree with zeke3D: Why can't you do something in between both shoe designs? Give her talons on the front of the boot, but them make less bulky, and more decorative than functional.

01-13-09, 04:20 PM

01-13-09, 05:41 PM
I gotta say this is my favourite so far, not only because the model is amazing, but the story is very powerful! I was suprised how much I enjoyed that short story. :)

If this was a movie or a tv show it would have plenty of space for story, all the things like how she would try to live her life when she is so different to everyone else, how she starts to rethink her future, and the effects of this. The concept of love. What is love? the only person that has loved her, she has killed. How she reacts to a man she thinks she's falling in love with. etc etc.

Keep it up!

If your still making your mind up about the boots, here's an idea that might help. Her boots reminded me of Raiden from MGS4. Check out his boots, it could help.

Here.

really amazing work so far!

pitchepuck
01-14-09, 02:59 PM
to ask for the favorite pose is very clever ;)
mh... well, I think the three poses vere all very similar. for me they have to get all more energy... the shoulder is too static. I would put more movement in it. more rotation. and the leg positions seems not stable to me... but I´m shure you will get the right pose for her. the model is nice. very clean scupting... I like it more rough... but this is your style.
the face is sweet... maybe a bit too perfect?

"Can i ask why you aren't doing any flying poses?"

i have been trying to think about how to do that with the base that it has to be on

VABG
01-14-09, 03:22 PM
I'd like to see C with the legs of B with the wrist in a more rightward angle (from her perspective) but with the sword in the current angle of C (obviously slightly different position).

But that's just me.

EDIT: And her left hand slightly more angled upwards.

Gohanf22
01-14-09, 03:26 PM
red if i had a choice it would be C but truth be told i can't tell a difference. i also believe as well that the shoulder isn't moving enough. too static. it needs to have more motion in it to get your point across. other than that your doing one heck of a job. keep it up.:D :tu:

digichu
01-14-09, 05:13 PM

I like that her left hand is higher, feels like she's on guard and ready to block an attack or something, has more anticipation.

01-14-09, 06:17 PM
I really like the upper half of the body, I don't really like how you have her legs placed though. I'd love to see her in a pose something like this. (see image) standing on one leg with her right leg bed and twisted across her body, he right arm fully extended with her left arm coming across her body.

sparrow_poses.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('122326','sparrow_poses.jpg',1,0))

(I hope this image portrays what I mean, only had a quick min to mock it up.)

I'm really loving your model and would love to know how you get the really nice edges on her body suit this is something I still can't master.

Best of luck hope this is a help

I vote having her running off the peak of a cliff or building with her chest out, head down and arms straight back, swords extended behind her with one knee up in front of her and the other leg extended back like she's lifting off into flight. Looks badass, Jeff. Can't wait to see those wings.

Firebert

Flying with the wings billowed up behind her and spread at the tips. Standing would be effective still, but flying will be more powerful.

Gohanf22
01-16-09, 09:44 AM

I agree with JP. I really like the second pose but her limbs would need to be splayed out more for balance and her torso leaning slightly forward.

Lookin damn good though!

Exquisite work on her costume! :tu:

I really like that final pose, definately adds interest to have her interact with the roof's sloping surface, I think you're onto a winner :)

Good luck to you, this is looking excellent so far

Gohanf22
01-16-09, 01:26 PM
that could be doable. i like the idea of a chinese rooftop. very innovative.;) keep up the good work red.:D

Firebert
01-16-09, 01:28 PM
Yes, the rooftop idea sound badass! Go with that and it is a win win for everyone, standing, yet flying blah blah blah:D

The new pose is a cool idea and this sculpt looks great! I think the head looks a bit relaxed at the moment, should maybe be rotated to be more in line with the action line of the body, although thats if she's about to attack people below her I guess. You could have a wake of tiles breaking off where she slid down, that would be cool

Oh, Red Republik, I like the swooping down pose you have so far...Looking quite strong and very....elegant. :o

i am working on refining the pose now. the wings are stand-in. i am still trying to figure out what to do with her left arm.

The hair is looking fantastic Jeff. :) I think the wings might need to be a bit bigger, they seem a tad small to support her body size in flight.

Captain Sensible
01-20-09, 11:23 AM
She is looking really cool. I think she might benefit from a pose similar to this though -

Sword Pose.jpg

Or with the sword in the leading hand and the other arm bent up and forwards similar to a fencer.

oh no... I had the same idea with the japanese symbols  I hope this is no problem for anyone , when I use symbols too...

I know this is late and probably totally gay, but looking at it now, I think bow and arrows would be more suited as a primary weapon. Maybe sword as secondary. Just a thought.

nice pose red. im loving the hair alot. its very flowing. i do also think the wings are too small. may need to enlarge them a bit. good job. :D

Nice work, hands look really great, torso must be worked on.

Very elegant pose, and nice hair style, very much it to be pleasant to me.
I think that her winds most be bigger, two are three times.

thanks for the feedback. the wings are something i am going to work on soon. I tried bringing her left arm up and giving her another sword (sorry firerbert, no bow and arrow).i didn't bother posing her left hand, until i figure out if i like the new pose or not.

I think it would look cooler if you brought her left arm back down and gave her a dagger in that hand, now that would look awesome :D

This is a great pose.:tu::tu: She flows very naturally. I envisage wings positioned at the highest behind her, touching each other and not spread apart. There may be better solutions than what I feel of course.

01-20-09, 07:27 PM
Looking fantastic! Just get that arm sorted out and it will be near perfect. I think you could go a lot of different directions with the arm and it will work, but that one isnt quite it.
I love the way you are handling the hair.

01-20-09, 07:34 PM

the hair looks damn killer man and a really nice expression as well!
so is she still sliding down a rooftop?
so how are you posing her? topo master? is it all on its own layer? what kind of texturing do you have in mind? i'm gonna ask fifteen hundred questions?

hey guys. thanks for all the support. unfortunately, i am dropping out. last friday, microsoft shut down Ensemble Studios, even though we were profitable, and just finished the highly anticipated Halo Wars. now i must devote my time to finding new means of income. i really had fun doing the challenge, and i wish everyone the best of luck. i leave you with one final image:

I was already wondering how an economy crisis would hit something
as "useless" as the entertainement industry.
Lets hope this was just a random decision by microsoft and not the start
of a big dying.
