Action Hero - Witiko
ZBrush Artist Cameron Farn
Powers - Sensing the souls of the evil, he travels his lands to consume what has been stained. Ancient magics and his soul bound twin are the weapons at his command and he wields them well.
-"My name has never been uttered, for none that know still live.
I write this now to leave some sign of my passing, that my deeds may be known, that my conscience might be cleared, but i think that the stain of what i am will always be, and not forgotten.
I had a brother once, a twin, whom by choice was starved, and sharpened, and upon my peoples anvil forged and bound to me.... and we hunger.
Vengeance is why i was made, to feed upon soured souls, and there is no lack of sustenance for these are troubled times, and we are never full.
The magic of my people is fierce and bread within me, to them I am a hero.
To others I am the legend... Witiko.... eater of souls.
Be well, live well, and in the ashes of my passing you will remain."

Cool concept entry. Looking at his costume, it reminds me of ancient Chinese / Japanese clothing. where did you get the inspirations from? Looking forward to seeing some more :)

SolidSnakexxx- thanks, well it took a little while to decide, i started by writing the description below. i wanted it dark, and i wanted a fantasy hero feel. Since he has magic as his main power, i think the cluttered feel of the robes and sacks etc. will fit well and i think his twin will make an appearence. as far as insperation, ive always liked this kind of character, but i want to mix it up and add some elements to suggest that he is a man out of time, that he is undying.
i am going to start with a bunch of sketches based on the first thumbnail below and refine the look, if i can figure out how to embed movies i would love to present it that way.
really nice concept/story. looking foward to seeing your zb sculpt

Well, I need to get started, and now that work has settled down, what better way than with a sketch, I will run through what I did and show some steps for the illistration, and then its onto ZB, before its to late.
I started with a quick anatomy study blue line.
Then some paint overs as layers in PS picking tones off the scanned image.
I wanted to get a character out, so I did'nt worry about nailing a pose.
Tweeks will happen in ZB pose changes etc. Its the best place to play.

Wow, I just love the way you approach to work on the design...from the anatomical sketch and progressing to become the character.. and I must say it looks awesome. BTW, is it the same character between the one with many horns and the character with the long 2 side spear?
threetails
12-30-08, 09:16 AM
SolidSnakexxx- Thanks, If I have your questioin right, the smaller character with the two bladed weapon is the living brother, the large figure is his soul bound twin. I was hoping to have time to sculpt them both, on a nice base made of stacked seals similer to the one's that are on both the characters.
Its going to be challanging but i think it could look so cool.

GREAT SKETCHES!!
Word of caution. Re-read the contest headquarters forum because i believe aurick said to sculpt one character. The point of this contest is to sculpt an Action Hero not multiple ones. I would sculpt the small guy. He looks to be the most dynamic in costume and power.
Looking forward to this one.

Threetails your sketches are amazing!!!!! :tu:
I love the crossover from the arms to the weapons of the big one...
and Iīm absolutely in love with the decoration of the horns---:)
Is there some native american influence?
Great Details of the entire models...and also a great idea.. but that will be a lot of work
But Iīm sure that will be a lot of fun too :)

DAnconia- thanks for the heads up, i have checked and havn't found anything yet, but i'll keep checking.
Moni-Poroni- thanks for your comments. It will be alot of work for sure.
-Could I have the forum administrators review this submission and tell me if multipule characters is not permitted, also i am looking at the official rules. and i need clarification on somthing. i have sketched the Witiko character "the big guy" and it is posted on my web site this new sketch and that one share the same hand weopn style, am i allowed to continue with this submission or should change it up.
thanks again.

Threetails I just located something thatīs maybe important for you
Aurick said
Regarding multiple characters: Not a good idea. The vision of the contest is to create a single character. Trying to create more not only dilutes your efforts, but it also creates real problems should you win a print prize.
I found it on this page
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=66041&page=4&pp=15
I hope it was helpful
Thanks Moni-Poroni. :)
Regarding the weapon, I'm fine with that. First, it's only a sketch. And second, it's only one element of many regarding the character.

Well, things are looking good, I started today with a base mesh from Z sphere's and then using the images that Zack had posted of his amazing anatomy model, did a once over and started to pull my basemesh together. Hands, feet and a good cleanup are still to come before I retopologize it for use as one, or both, or a mix of the characters from the illistration. still thinking about a final pose, I want it to be pretty dynamic but have some balance and flow, its been tuff to pin down. More to come.

That is a very nice anatomical base model to work from. Having the proportions already fleshed out in the T pose should make it a lot more straightforward to pose. I really like your sketches too!

jp_smith- thanks so much thats a great compiment. i have worked on the model from Zsphere's and it took about 4 days including the hands. still have the feet to do.
Webhead- it was a very simple set up for the Zsphere's the sculpting has taken up most of the time.
Lucky_1- thanks
Moni-Poroni- thanks, yes your right the fingers in Zacks model seem longer but they have no skin on them, i have been trying to get them to look right while adding enough to fill them out, it has been a cool challange.

Am I missing something here? I see some awesome drawings of a horned creature without hands and a fully clothed huntsman and on the next page I'm a bit surprised to see Zack Petroc entered the contest.
If you'd put all those amazing sculpting skills to work on the actual concept you'd be finished by now ;)

"Danconia": don't read too much into it.
But I'm a bit puzzled by the development proces here. Why go into all that anatomical detail (brilliant as it is) as opposed to roughing out and playing with the global forms first.
I think it is always great to get an understanding of the design proces that is going on in an artists head, and I thought that was part of the contest too.
But in this case I feel a bit disconnected from the original concept.
I'm pretty sure "threetails" is throwing a curveball here though that will hit me right in the face and knock me off my feet when he presents the finished model.
Looking forward to seeing where he ends up going ;)

allRone- Clean up in Ile three!
Captain Sensible- cool name. thanks i will.
tortilla1- Thanks very much.
I guess i should explain whats up with this process Ive chosen.
I started out with just the sketches, trying to get a scence of what
the characters would look like, not dealing with pose at all. i was cautioned early that having two character might be difficult to print and split my efforts, which is true.
I havent had a good base mesh to use that i've made myself so i thought i would make one from scratch, and what better refference than Zacks sculpt.
i didn't buy the model, but i did use the images that Zack posted here as visual refrence. no Xplane no texture plane just straight up sculpting. im sure that some of the proportions are off but i am happy with it for the most part.
what ive done before with traditional methods is to sculpt an armiture mass out the forms cut in my largest planes and refine it from there. i took the same aproach here with base model to insure good form good tension and of course have the anatomy as tight as i can. now that im happy with the forms ill pose it up a few times for both characters and choose the one i like the best or that fits the mood of the whole thing.
what i had planned was to retopologize the base mesh, transfer the poses to the new toplogy and then start with the subtools for all the elements, head, gear, base, masks, weapons etc.
its a little different take on the process, but it insures that everthing that i lay against the body, or fit to the body have the best base that it can. if the under structure is good, then all elements you add on will have a better chance of turning out well.
Its the principle of starting with the largest forms first and working your way to the smallest. in this case i chose to go a little deeper than starting with the shirt or pants as my primary structures and start with the anatomy which with luck, once done, will drive the rest of the elements to fit better, lay better and to dress better as they flow off the body, because the lines of the body, flow, and movment are already established.
once all the subtools are in place i'll refine them, but i won't move on untill i like what i see.
-oh and that was a great question, makes me think, and thinking is good..
heres a peak at another pose, based more closely on the pose in the concept. transpose movie of this will be up soon. i hope it works this time.

Yeah, I'm having problems with Veoh as well. I seem to be able to upload movies if they are smaller like around 10- 20 MB. But I have a 65 MB transposing movie that just doesn't want to upload and I've tried like 5 times. Any movies that I have successfully uploaded, for some reason have footage duplicated after the movie is done.
I'm just about ready to switch to YouTube, though the video quality seems much better on Veoh. If you figure out the problem, let me know. I'll update you if I find anything out as well.

And the transpose movie to go along with it.
transpose session 3.jpg
_luKt_XD-9c
I've found that the anatomy has helped me to transpose the character
in that it gives me clear anitomical landmarks to mask too, as well as areas like the crest of the knee and elbow to place the transpose line. i've also started to paint in, our out, the mask to enclude some of the larger muscle groups. For example when the arm is moved it grabs the peck, a portion of the shoulder and the the lat, and it moves and rotates it as well. I also try to mask out the bony landmarks like the ankle and the crest of the colar bones and the scapula. some of the bends do create some resculpting but it has been minimal, inpart to rotating in several steps rather than in one large motion as with the forarm. I hope the movie and the images help you all with your poses. take care.

Hey Witiko, I'm really thrilled by your entry.
I don't want to harp on too much about how amazing your skills are (which they undoubtedly are), I actually hope I can be of some help with a constructive crit of your latest pose.
I couldn't help but get the nagging feeling that some innacuracies were going on at this stage:
The pecs have become too condensed towards the top of the chest, and the stomach hasn't been pulled up enough. It's as if the six-pack has had to bear the most of the stretching, wheras in reality the deformation would be more uniform across the whole abdomen.
The legs have become slightly long in relation to the rest of the body
This last one is really minor, no right or wrong, I just feel that the head may look more dynamic and natural with a slight tilt. But again, this is just a personal feeling as opposed to an anatomical innaccuracy, same goes for the arm positions.
Here's an image to show you what I mean, I quickly did this with a mouse so it's only a rough idea and not totally accurate!
transpose session 3c.jpg
Anyway, kudos to you! Hope I could help in some small way, you're an incredibly gifted sculptor and observer - I'm sure you'll go far in this contest :tu: :)
ps. I hope you may be able to help me with those sharp eyes of yours somewhere down the line, I'm sure you will spot things I wouldn't have ;)

Fantastic sculpts. Enjoy the anatomical accuracy of your model.
I would not even mention this to anyone else, but you appear to be so accurate--I thought I would mention it. In the scultps I saw ( be it intential or not I don't know) but FYI you forgot the Gracilis muscle which is a strap like muscle in the inner thigh region that adducts your thigh and you combine the Peroneus longus and Brevis into one conjoined tendon. You may be just simplifying it but I thought I would mention it as you are so detailed in other regions. I am by no means being an A-hole here as I have no where near the skill or talent that you do. Just mentioning it in hopes of assisting you at your craft. Thanks for the videos. I think you do an exceptional job at demonstrating muscle underneath skin and getting the effect it has on the skin--especially the wrinkles. Bravo. Hope the comments are helpful. :D

Firerbert- thankyou, your right about it being a bit feminine, i changed the leg position to straighten out the lines to a stronger line.
wethand- thanks alot, im glad that you like it, im on to smoothing and refining now, mostly with the clay brush set to a low intensity and the smooth brush, or shift on the keypad. so far so good.
bryzol-wow, thanks for saying that, i hope you like the update, tomorrow should be either retopologizing or using the GRP split option to break this up into parts to get another subdivision level to sculpt the details. i havent decided which way to go yet. both will work, and with subtool master i shouldn't have a problem moving him around if i need to tweek later. still not sure.
petekasim-Hey thanks for your red line notes, i had a look at each of the issues and made some changes as im going into the refining stage now. with the model being developed the way it was, and then posed, all the muscles had the same tension wieght and gravity, so it did look off in the last images. now with a little more refining under way i can add the stretch and contraction that was missing before. still alot to do, but its going good, i hope to start adding in the subtools tomorrow, for all the gear and such.
SolidSnakexxx-thanks i'm glad that you enjoyed them.

therasoft-nice post, i love the crit, and yes your right, all those elements had been softened out. As i did the refining today i brought back those elements and did a recheck of the anatomy at all the joiints as there effected the most by the transposing motions. hope you the like the update. still more to do.

Drakelot-much apprieciated.
Etcher- thank you
petekasim-thanks, its been a bit slow with work in the way but its been a blast.
Captain Sensible- thanks.
here are some updates of the head.
i needed to refine the skull and neck area a little bit. so i brought head polygroup down to the lowest sub division and did a local sub div to get more polys in just that area, then did a little more sculpting to get it closer to the ref. it helped quit alot interms of understanding for the next step.
on the posed model i did the same local subdivision and on the skull began to build up the flesh, i got quite far in a short time having the ref to sculpt directly off of. the extra subdivision helped alot and i was able to pull a good starting form for the expression and mood i was going for, i still need to work on the eye positioin and spacing but i think i got a real creepy thing going.

Amazing job. The character sketches alone should be pinned to the top row. Intense and enlightening entry. Please post many more screens (and hopefully videos) of your progress. Pharion3d- thats great to here, thankyou.
sazar26-thanks alot, the plan is to get the head to a certian stage and then i decided to retopoligize it to optimize the mesh, and then if i still need some details, i will group split off the elements were i need to.
abyss103- glad you've caught the creeps off this as well.
bryzol- thanks for stoping in, if you dont have crits thats ok, ask any questions that you want, what ever helps you out with your projects.
spimmy- i'm glad you like it so far. here is an image of the face being refined a little more. i had to do one more local sub division of the front of the head to get enough polys there to smooth and start some seconary forms. but thats as far as my machine will allow me to go right now. so after this i have to retopo to organize the mesh over this sculpture. i've maxed out a about 11 million polys.

I love this face update! Looks really killer with great form! The teeth are so sick. I'm a big fan of outlandish grotesque oddities like those chompers he's got going on.
On a side note, and I am not entirely sure this would work, but in theory I think it would; using the layers palette in the tool menu would be of great benefit to you for your current work flow in the future. You may be using this technique now as I am pressed for time at the moment and have yet to skim back on all previous posts. So if you are using this process, don't take offense, I'm just trying to help and am in kind of a rush. I like how you sculpted the skeleton up first to aid you in solidifying the form, it is a great technique that I use as well, but I noticed that now you are sculpting up the face without symmetry, which is cool because it adds more to the realism, but to save time, it would be good to use symmetry to build it up and then add in the asymmetry details later.
1) sculpt up your model to whichever level you want. In your case, the base masses and the skeleton.
2) create a new layer and pose your model on that layer. (be sure to name this layer "Pose" and make sure that is all you do on this layer and it is the layer that parents all others)
3) turn off the pose layer and build up the facial features. when you turn off the pose layer, your model should go straight back to the original bind pose.
4) turn the pose layer back on and the model should go to the pose and maintain all the details you just added.
I could be wrong in this techniqe as I have yet to really truly try it, but I think it would work and also save you a ton of time.

01-15-09, 08:36 AM
Thanks everyone for taking a look today, some great suggestions and questions have come up so i will try to layout what i was intending and then how its actually progressed so far.
The sculpt of the base mesh upto the pose went well, i had intended to do the face and further details at that stage, before i had posed it, but during the test transpose stage i hit on somthing that i liked, and when it happens you have to continue. and so without having made layers i moved on. i needed to get some more polys into the areas of the body to sculpt and decided that local sudivisions would get me there the fastest. so the whole head, and the front part of the face in turn each recieved a local subdiv. and the sculpting continued. As soon as you decide to grp split or to do local subdivisions you would loose your layer setups any way so i wasnt feeling like i had missed a step there, the road just took different path.
it has been noted that in the head build up movie that symetry was not on, good eyes Firerbert. After the model had been posed the face was no longer in a postion to use x symetry, but for that stage i liked that i had to build up the form on each side. it keeps the model in motion, rotating and evaluating the profiles all the time, and i kind of get lost in it. like its real clay and i love that.
but the great thing about Zbrush is that i am not pinned into any one work flow or system, i have great tools at my disposal but they never get in the way of just sculpting. so i just sculpt away and enjoy the process.
as the head progressed further i wanted that symetry back, so to do that i repostioned the cross hairs in the preview window over the center of the face and transposed the model so the face was rotated as close to center in all the snapped orthographic views. now with that set up i could go back and sculpt the face with symetry.
so here i am with a body and face and some teeth and a developing expression. the great thing about this so far, is that the hundreds of decissions i make as a sculptor while i work don't have to stop until i want them to stop.
now i will sculpt in some of the wrinkles over the whole body smooth out some portions and should have this ready to go to retopo soon, ive only spent a coulpe of hours a night tweeking after work, but i'm comfortable with the progress so far, and i think that the rest will go much quicker now that the largest part of the model is getting to a good stage.
there you go. i hope this provides some insite into my rather macurial work flow. more posts soon.

Cam, this is fantastic work. I know what you mean about sculpting both sides. Muscles in a pose deform differently and therefore need attention to specific rotation and tension that happens in each part of the body. Problem is i'm always learning about a new muscle:P.
Anyway.. wanted to just say was great reading your workflow. I'm amazed at how flexible zbrush can be. Theres always a different approach.
Congrats on a great piece so far :tu:

Gohanf22- Thanks very much, your work looks good. the last post show improvment already, keep it up.
Thanks Brett, its true, its always muscles, muscles, muscles, its alot to keep track of but its going good. i have been doing alot of resculpting for all the tension and stretch, here's a couple of shots. i've been pulling out all the deep creases and overlaping polys that are caused by the tight transposing, and then resculpting the forms to pack the muscle back into place.
hows thing going in your neck of the woods?

Yep! You really captured him in mid-battle, absorbing the evil soul of the creature that is attacking him, leaving us -viewers- in tension: is he gonna succomb or ... counter attack, hitting the enemy with it's own evil x 1000?
This would be a set great images:

" Darkness, it is strange thing. For the most part intangable, without form, purposless. Only when the sent of evil, those sour and vile souls waft on the night breath do I know my purpose, feel the hunger. And when the battle begins, thier will be no mercy, no favour shown, i will crack the seal and become my brother vengance, and I will feed on all of you."

Mikeporetti- yah i tried a few configurations but it was the better choice as the others left dense quads, this area will be covered. this won't be animated, so my main concern was to redisribute ploys to other areas to get better detail in, i saved my self about a million plus polys and i should be able to get all the detail i want in now.
SolidSnakexxx- you are right, some hand made pounded bronze shields, as well as many gargoyle sculpts and green man motifs were the insperation for the seals, and then add a bit of Cam brain juice and walla.

here is a quick update:
after a few tries at creating the loin cloth, i ended up using the topology tools to draw a layout on the chest going thru the grion and the back, and making an adaptive skin with a 0.25 thickness. Masking it off and folding over the front and the back. i placed eye subtools and all the teeth as subtool, all sculpted from polysphere's the horns have been sculpted from an apended
zsphere chain and made into an adaptive skin and sculpted. and some hand touchups.
lots more to come.

bryzol- Thanks for the kind words. check out the sincity matcap, its fantastic.
brettSinclair- Thanks brett, its getting some good flow now that the horns are on. all the accesorys are coming as well. im going to try some mesh extractions and other tools to create them along with all the horn decor which is coming soon.
SolidSnakexxx-thanks so much yours is looking wicked as well.
Y/Haüss- thanks im glad that you like it still more to come but its going good, i started a shedule today to help keep on track to the finish.
Etcher- Yes and it will continue to the end. what ever happens i have learned so much from participaitng. specificly how to use this program to its fullest. still alot to learn, but i love the whole process.
Gohanf22-this updates for you, here are the horns close up. i used masks to seperate the growth lines and then the clay brush to bring them up to start. after that it was the standard brush for the edges and damage. lots of layers of different textures, one on top of the other, smooth as you go to soften, and get some good refference.
fluxist8070- thanks so much more to come.
KrakenCMT- so is yours its really well done.
Moni-Poroni- thank you and yes the horn decor is going on soon. will be working on those tomorrow along with some other elements.

Just one thing I thing you might have missed in the final submissions page:
http://www.pixologic.com/contest/hero/rules/
All parts should intersect each other. Nothing should be free-floating.
You might need to attach the hovering stone to his hand with a chain, or plant?
Wow that's looking great, the horns are wonderfully detailed :tu: , the lighting is great, it's all great :) , good work! :tu:

SolidSnakexxx-thanks its getting close now, but still lots to go.
Gohanf22-if i can pull mine together i will post some images.
Pharion3d- thanks for the heads up i had intended to have some energy or the like holding things up, otherwise if its chosen the stone and the other element in his hands will be attached to his belt for printing.
spimmy- thanks very much.
here is an update of the other hand element. it is an obsidian spear tip. still some work to go on it, but i will place it with the model and continue on adding all the other elements, then start refining things when its all together.

Pharion3d- thanks, i found some great refference, still needs some work but i like it with the gk_boing mat cap thats in the matcap library. i tried a material that was posted some time ago in the matcap repository, an obsidian material, but i lost alot of the detail with all the shine this one is more mat, but has a great color wash that i like. we will see how it goes.
brettSinclair- thanks very much, i'm really happy with how its going and i will most likely continue to refine this even after the contest.
abyss103- thanks very much.
SolidSnakexxx- thanks, yes it is shown with the gk_boing material no tweeks to it yet bu i think i will play a little with the settings when i texture.
Gohanf22-thanks still some more to go to bring out the big chips.
- FoOD - thanks very much.
Alliecat 08- i think that transforming into this guy has caused some slight discomfort.....:D
more horn any one........ah hahahahahaha...

thanks for the encouragment, here is a feather in progress. Layout with topology tools and skinned with some thickness for sculpting. these will be on the horns as part of the decorations. a very simple topology to get sarted and to get the shape i wanted right off. After the sculpt i might retopo it depending on weather there are breaks in the feather or further details.

Bravo! That is excellent. Best cg feather i've yet to see. All it needs are a few imperfections, missing/seperated feathers and it would be perfect.
I agree with slickytom ... that is seriously the best cg feather i have seen so far... :tu:

here is an updated feather, with a litte more splitting, you just have to adjust the mesh before you skin it with thickness applied.

hey man!
those assesories are coming along very well.
is it just standard brush and lasy mouse, you use for the feathers or some fancy technique? :D

threetails
01-27-09, 11:44 PM
abyss103- Hey thanks, yes i used lazy mouse as well as the clay and standard brush with the alpha 54. i think it works the best when you alternate from add to sub. add for the areas of the feather that are higher and sub for the areas that seem pressed in. i still want to play with them a little bit. but i will be setting them in position on the main tool so i can see it all together and postition all the elements before i go in for a final overall sculpt.
thanks everyone for the all the great comments.

Oh wow. The motion is fantastic! I think he needs some veins in the temples. Or something, Its a big flat spot area where the horns enter the skull.
I'm sure you have an idea though.
