i feel kinda bad C&Cing your work dude, as it blows mine out of the water, but i would check out the curve of the ribcage, its kinda hard to find that bodytype but if u type in diuretic (as in the drug that sucks the water from your muscles) to make body builders look more ripped. into google u see that ledge above the abs and below the end of the sternum. it might even add a little more tention and dramatic strain to the pose. rock on thretails.

Wow oh wow all the detail. You make me feel like I'm just a kid with a box of coloring crayons that can't stay in the lines lol. Your detailing is just awesome and so realistic. Love the character and his look, I just don't know how else to say I am just so impressed and a little green with envy of your talent :o . Wow:eek: . If this wasn't here I believe it would be on top row. Keep up the great work and sculpting. Can't wait to see this finished and brought fully to life. :tu:

SolidSnakexxx- thanks very much, i have left the body alone while i finish all the other parts, but i have made some notes on areas that need some touchup, those will be next.

abyss103- thanks, yes the floating objects could be attached to the belt for printing, or he may have a trick up his sleave.

brettSinclair- Thanks Brett, yes the blend of the horns and some areas of the body that i've been staring as i place all these parts will be getting there final touches soon, viens sound like a good idea.

henrysouth- thanks, wow, you hit it on the head with the dream catcher, thats what will be going into those areas. the ribcage arch and some other area's are on my list for the final tweeks, but i like to leave it sit and stare at it for a while to pic it apart for final touches. good eye.

Seavannah- thanks so much thats one of the best compiments i've recieved.

Captain Sensible- it really helps to asses the flow now that the parts are getting in there.

chindian-- thanks so much, i think you'll like were it ends up.

bryzol- thanks again, its great to have all this encouragment.

This is looking really fantastic Threetails. I am really liking the accessories you have added to this guy, he is really starting to take shape as a character.

His abs look a bit long to me, it might look nice to shorten them just a bit.

Another great seal design.Man, you are making one very cool and unique hero! :tu:

threetails
01-28-09, 07:33 PM
here is the last seal with some further details.
i started with a poly sphere, then using the deformations sliders flatten, gave it a disk shape, this is better than using a cylinder or primitive because i didnt have to worrie about the poles, and there is alot more polys to start with around the edges which help to get the soft squezzed wax shape. i start with symetry on and use the radial symetry to push the inside down creating the flat plane to start the face sculpt in the center. i divide it a few times upto a million polys and start sculpting. i like the clay tubes and the clay brushes for all the buildup, and for the face i use just x symetry. once i get a good facial form i drop the size of the brush and begin pulling in some sharper details like the eyes and teath forms. after that i switch to a standard brush with no alpha and squezze the focal shift into a small dot to start to refine the edges of the other forms. after that i like to damage it up a little. i have to remind myself that these are going to be pretty small on the sculpt so i don't want to go crazy on them but it hard to stop when your having fun.

here is a base update, shown whole and broken. I did the break on another layer, i still want to play around with the positions of the pieces, and a texture for the lower disk, and i still have to place a small piece of parchment under the seal. thanks everyone for the support.

soul catcher.jpg

here is a look at the development of the soul catcher in the horns. i sculpted a string, from a primitive that had been initilized and made into a polymesh. it was appended to the main model and then, cloned and re-appended and each one placed using transpose.

threetails
01-30-09, 09:13 AM
snoopalu- thanks so much, there is a little more to go on the other side.
brettSinclair- well, i know what you mean, i like wayne barlowe alot, i met him at the last Gnomon Event, an exceptional artits. I keep going back to one of the images in this thread with the red material on it and thinking, that would be a good base. i have alot of tattoo sketches and face paint samples for him.

abyss103- i think you',ll like were he's going then.

spimmy- i will, and with that interveinus of coffee i can't sleep anyway.

Harmonic- thanks i'm glad you like it.

Captain Sensible- there will be a little pull there, but i wanted to avoid the look that the strings are pulling his face into the smile, so it will be subtle.

SolidSnakexxx- check out the vid on the last page. here is a breakdown.

A) the strings are made from a primitve cylinder3d, i chose this because the ends of the strings were the poles will be, won't be seen and i wouldn't be divideing it more than 3 times so the poles won't open. using the initalize tab in the tool pallette i rezie and shape it, as a rule for me i adjust the layout of the mesh until it reads as close to a clean quad layout as i can. i adjust the length and diameter until it reads as a thin strand. press make polymesh 3d.

B) the srtings need some texture so i used the standard brush and alpha 54 and streaked the surface. using add and sub to creat some texture. its worth noting that if you can sculpt 3 or 4 nice strands running the length of the string perhaps with radial sym on, the next step can make it look like a rope.

C) once you have the texture on, in the deformations tab in the tool pallette, use the twist slider to well, twist it up. if you have some good solid forms established you can twist it up so much that it looks like a rope.

D) once you have that done save it out as name.ztl at the lowest sub div.

E) then i go back to the main model and start eppending it in.

F) use transpose to place and strech, scale etc, until your happy with the look.

G) after i had all the strings in place i started eppending in some polymesh rings and placing them at the joints, i want those to read as steel rings that are holding things in place. later if you need to control your number of subtools you can merge these all as long as you keep the polygroups for poly painting them all later, and at the scale the objects are seen in the model the low poly count keeps the merged poly count managable.

H) i still havn't figured out how to mirror it after merging without loosing my groups or subdivs but i will look into that a little more, perhaps i need to have all the UV's on, not sure, to save some memory, i've been disabling them.

here is a turntable of the sculpt as it sits right now.

kick ass threetails. this thread is the only one i still have a subscription too hehehe as for C&C.... ummmmm ... theres... ummm

ok but really nit picking here. i would throw the whole pose back. like hes in pain or the force of whatever crazy satanic power is throwing him upwards. at the moment its like hes in mid leap. plus moving the whole thing 45 degrees backwards would put the objects hes holding on the virtical offseting his extreme line of action.

SolidSnakexxx- thanks very much, the material is BG copper that was posted in the matcap repository, here on ZBC BG's materials are all fantastic.

henrysouth-Thanks for all the encouragment. i tried your suggestion to tip it backword. but it seemes to change the parts of the body thats leading the rise into the air. right now the chest is the point of the flow, after the rotation the it became the waist. i decided to stick with this flow as its more forward in motion, instead of straight up. but yours was a great crit, it makes me take a second look, and ask some good questions so thank you.

spimmy, thank you very much.

petekasim- thanks for your kind words, its going to be a little push to the end now.

Etcher- thanks, so am i. i will post another color test tomorrow, as i am getting the final elements in place to hold the scoll cases and the club and blade.

Captain Sensible- wow, i appreciate that.

Moni-Poroni- cool, im very proud of this one, what i like best is that this contest has opened up some new processes to me and seeing everyones work flows has made a great impact on me. i've learned alot from everyone here. its been a blast so far.

here is an update showing the way i will be mounting him to the base. i used the topology tools to draw out a long rectangle on a poly cube. i extracted it with some thickness and appended it to the model. after that it was transposed at a low poly count into the shape you see. i did discover somthing cool. i think that a good work flow for cloth migh be to create a sheet of polys the size you want. pose it all in the model draping and folds. if you do this with just the one surface you can get all you folds really nice and clean as you bring it up to 3 or 4 subdivisions. don't get into the really high stuff yet. if you need thickness nows the time. drop it down by one, mask it all off, and then extract it with some thickness. and delete the single mesh. now with most of your shape finished you can tweek, but this way will help to keep a more uniform thickness over the whole fabric, and now you can use the standard brush to pull and push the finer stuff in without warping the front and back surfaces. you can also put the backface masking on with your brushes when you start to detail.

abyss103- thanks its been a bit slow going to get here but i have enjoyed the process.

henrysouth- keep up with the crits there all good, and i appreciate them, sometimes you just get used to looking at somthing and you need a fresh eye to spot for you.

P'etur- thanks very much.

wethand- thanks again.

nimajneb- i appreciate it makes me happy to hear.

SolidSnakexxx- thanks yours is coming along very well also.

Harmonic- it was a challange to come up with a support but i think they fit the character well, i can imagine him with them wrapped up around his arms with the seals holding them closed, and when he's ready he smashes the seal with other fist and they flow out, and all the nasty breaks loose.

Gohanf22- im glad you like it.

Etcher- thanks for the fresh eyes. i did go back and check on those and made some tweeks to reform the bicep cafes and other areas as well.

here are some shots of todays work.

good morning everyone, thanks for all the great responses.

SolidSnakexxx- thanks, i will get some closer views as i touch up the face a little, and add the last soulcatcher attachment at the ear.

brettSinclair- yes nearly done, there are some things that i will go back and clean up, what do you think poly paint real or leav it in this material and give it some age?

TO ALL: Now the tuff questions. do I polypaint this as a realistic, or do i leave it in the bg cooper material and polypaint it as an aged piece of art. my wife has voted for the bg cooper, and even though it will earn me punch in the kidney, i'm willing to go for the poly paint. What do you all of you think?

bryzol- thanks i think this will work for a print, if its chosen, but it also fits with the overall characters theme.

3dMob- thanks alot. im glad that you like it.

Why not do both? Your sculpt is so strong that it would only need minor colour additions. Just keep it simple and you should be good. Colour the scrolls, colour the horns and feathers. The skin base could be copper easily. It shows off all the details nicely.

Damn. Thats a tough one to answer.
If done well the paint job would look great. I wanted to do something with the native american too at some point and found this site: Shaman (http://kirbysattler.sattlerartprint.com/nativeamericanpaintings.html)

But up to you. I'm just wondering if it will increase your chance for a win if you paint it. But keep tonal range desaturated. Nothing to flashy. If it turns out crap theres always the bronze option like you say..

Good luck :tu:

bryzol- thanks i think this will work for a print, if its chosen, but it also fits with the overall characters theme.
It fits theme very well! I was wondering how you're gona solve this :) Very good idea! I like it a lot.
And I whould vote for "realistic" polypainting! I imagine him with a blue tone skin :) I'm shure that you will pait it amazingly and I whould like to see it.
By the way, I will use your screens as a anathomy reference in the future :) if you don't mind ;-)

02-05-09, 11:21 AM
Ha! That's an easy one! If you paint half as good as you sculpt... :) polypaint please! The aged bronze will look great, but I'm so curious as to how the colors could further enhance the mood of the scene.

See ya!

thanks DAnconia, here is PS paint over using the last image and material. i think your right in that it would make a great base for the skin tone.

Great advise Brett, i will keep that in mind, and that Shaman sight is Great! what wonderful paintings, by Kirby Sattler, here is an image with a face style that he has, if i go this way i will change it up a little more than this, i dont want to use the look directly from the painting but its a great start.

thanks again, bryzol, and go for it, if your looking for great refference however you should check out Zacks images he has posted, and if you can buy the model he has made, i just used the available images to model from, but he has it down and is one of the best resources here for anatomy.

thanks, Etcher, here is another PS paint over, and i think i will go for it and get some color on there, as brett said theres alway the bg cooper material as a back up if this takes a turn.

First of all I think the work you're doing here is fantastic. Top notch stuff all the way. Two critiques. You've deviated pretty far from the original concept drawings. Also, I feel you've gone way overboard with the symbolic religious doodads. I can't tell exactly what most of them are, or what purpose they serve. Most concept designers will agree that it's a good idea to be able to justify every spike, membrane, shoulder pad, and gadget...just in case the client asks about it.

Maybe do a quick character sheet using your current sculpt, labeling the various accouterments and what they do.

-Dustin

I would have to say the costume aspects seem to work well together, the thing that is bugging me the more I look at this entry is the facial expression, to my it looks like he is in pain, I have shown it to others and they said it looks like he is laughing or going to the bathroom. I know its late but is there anyway you can change it? perhaps opening the eyes would be enough?

threetails
02-06-09, 04:20 PM
Etcher- :D

dustinbrown- Great Crit's, now this is what i'm talking about.

your right i did deviate from the concept for a couple of reasons. one, i was cautioned against haveing two charachters like the sketch so i could complete on time and pack all the detail i wanted into one figure instead of delutting my resorces over two.
How i decided to do that was to have one character transform into the other, and the model is a representation of that. and the concept sketch is just that a concept, to build on, its a starting point for me then i go and i support the ideas that are in there with real ref and bring it into focus. the dodads are part of the character and all have a purpose, but what do you think they are? thats the most important part, i could tell you that they are meteclorians but what kind of mystery and mythology is that. the feather, soulcatchers, are pulled from ref and reworked to fit the character, and the seals are at the core of how he uses magic.

in any case this character is based on alot of personal mythology that i think all artist who design characters need to develope and have in the bag to make them your own, thats were this guy came from, and theres alot more itterations the character could take when you use the sketch as a leap of point, if i had stuck to the drawing of the demon entirely i would just be repeating myself, and i wanted it to be better, and not leave myself in a box with no place to go.:D one of the best crits ever.

zeke3d-you got it on the head, he is in pain if you look close you can see tears on the face being swept back, i figure there has to be a price for vengence and pain is the first one. as for opening his eyes if you look a the concept you can see the deamon has no eyes, and at this stage of the transformation, soon niether will he. great crit. i will look into the expressioin a little more.

Cameron, the poly paint is looking awesome, nice work. :) I took some time and did some revisions to your arm anatomy. Your original Zack Petroc anatomy sculpt was pretty solid, but when you posed him you made some fairly significant anatomy mistakes. The biggest one is that the inner head of the bicep is lower than the outer head, not vice versa as you have now. Also in this position the bicep should still be fairly square and flat, it starts to ball and move up the arm when the elbow bends more than you have it now. The other area I pointed out is the front head of the deltoid, which doesn't dip down near the armpit but stretches in a nearly straight line to attach between the brachialis and bicep. You also have some issues with your rear deltoids but I'll have to get to that later, gotta get to bed. Hope this was helpful to you...Witiko is rockin'. :tu: :tu:

Malleable man, thanks very much, and there are no flames fans here.

Etcher- thanks so much for the encouragment, if you see anything off on this sculpt or suggestions for paint, i would love to hear your crit on it. be harsh, i need some more fresh eyes.

gregoconn- hope your liking the body paint, still more tweeks to make on that and i may add a second color detail here and there as well.

Marsyas- im glad you like it, there are still alot of things that bother me about the anatomy, jp_smith picked up on a few, i will go back and fix the ones that are getting to me after i get all the poly paint done.

SolidSnakexxx- war paint is right, i will have to play with the tones a little more as i get into the final renders and character comp.

jp_smith- thanks for the great crit, it always helps to have a clean honest review of the work, i will be going back and making changes as you've suggested as well as other areas that ive run into while painting.

brettSinclair- dont worry about it brett be hard on it, when you can if i cant incorperate into this sculpt i will watch for it on the next one.

Hi threetails, since you asked, I'll give a few more thoughts on the sculpt. It's hard to judge though, without being able to actually rotate it.

A. Muscles:

1. Head, hands and feet could be a bit larger (think someone's mentioned this before). But, the pics can be deceiving if you have perspective enabled: this would make the chest look bigger and hands/head/feet smaller. see attachment

2. Mid back looks funky: you need to tweak the volumes of the erector, serratus and latissimus muscles a bit. attachment

3. On one pic (see attachment) the left wrist looks like it has an extra joint and the palm of the hand looks a bit stretched.

4. Delts: I think jp_smith's on that.

B. Polypaint:

The horns's overall tone might be a bit too dark (detaches them a bit from the rest of the sculpt. Might need some sort of color gradation.

Hope I could be of some help, otherwise, disregard all of the above :) .

Hi threetails, regarding the horn color I need to clarify a bit more on what I said in my previous post. I hope you'll understand what I mean cause my English vocabulay is so poor. . I was more referring to the material properties rather than the rgb (or color) properties. If the body and the horns have a reflectiveness or shininess or specularity and shadow setting that's too different, they look detached when lit and rendered (this is what I badly described as "color gradation"). Took me a while to translate this, but I hope you understand.

See ya!

AVTPro- thanks, it was helpful to get out of the way of the pc and have some others take a look at it with fresh eyes. somtimes i will go weeks with out looking at a sculpt so i can come back fresh. here, a day would have to do.

abyss103- i appreciate the good wishes.

JUPITER- thanks, there is still more to come. there will be writing on the inner portions of the arm scrolls.

brettSinclair- i've always found it hard to crit as well, you never know at what stage a sculpt is or what the artist is planning on doing before he calls it. but every bit helps, so i will take another look at the heals.

KrakenCMT- thanks, i love the poly paint. the effects that can be created are so fun and so much like working in the fx shop.

JUPITER- thanks so much, the smile still creeps my wife out.

Etcher- no problem i had to lighten up the horn to controll the contrast with the strapping holding the soulcatchers. i still have a little to do there, and will revisit the material. your right there should be some spec on those near the ends were they have been scuoring the damed.

wethand- wow! thanks so much, im glad that it speaks to you, tell me, what does it say?:D

SolidSnakexxx- i like them as well, theres still some time to try out some contrasitng colors, mabye a blue based black would help.?

oh maan, it tells me about the real hate.
a demon that curses everyone which thrwarts it. (hope that this is right)
a mysterious evil that slept for years and now comes to live again.

you can interprate everything evil in him...

damn! something that makes a stone stronger than a bazooka... :)

i love it. nice job man

wow, i had the worst sleep ever, i thought for sure i missed this deadline. i was freakin out..... but im comping the last of the images together, and sizing them for posts so it should be soon. i don't want to rush anything but i'm keeping things simple to just show the model off the best, seeing as how the turntable movie isn't the best quality. anyway images are coming.

thanks everyone, for all the kind words.

jackdaniels666- thnks, i would love to see him printed, or milled out of foam as well, and at full size! in my living roon. now that would be cool.

wethand- thnks so much.

jp_smith- thnks, i added thickness to all the parts so i hope it will.

Webhead- thanks for the kind words, it was a blast to sculpt him win or otherwise, i learned so much doing this. what an adventure.

SolidSnakexxx- thanks, i don't know about a master, but i enjoy the learning process as much as the sculpting process. and i hope that comes thru in the work.

Hamilcar- thanks for the boost. its going to fun to see how it all pans out.

LeXuSMalus-Thanks for the support. My goal was top ten, and I made it. im very happy to have had my work reviewed by such a talented group of judges, and the community. With a character like Witiko, which is a little out of the box for an action hero, I new it would be tuff to even place. but if I didn't go this way it just wouldnt be me...:D. Im elated that it made top ten, anything else after that, was gravy.

jp_smith- thanks so much i aprecitate that, it means alot to me. you've got a first class portfolio, a class act all the way.

henrysouth-thanks so much, if ever an image of mine reaches top row, i'll crack open a bottle of the grape....

SolidSnakexxx- thanks for the kind words and Congrats on placing, well desrved.

Etcher- thanks so much. i have a plan in the works...its going to blow.... your mind....................

Marsyas- thanks very much, the reason i chose a simpler background was to keep the attention focused on the figure. i did consider putting him in scene. but im happy with the results. i need to go back to these and sweeten them up a little, mabye ill post a finished image in a scene if there is some interest.

Congrats on the win, but I thought you had one of the big prizes absolutely in the bag! I only saw two possible winners and the other one got the big prize. Ah well, the vagaries of juried voting, there are no certainties. It was amazing work right from the first sketch, you hafta be very proud of it. Technical skill and imagination by the truckload!

Its been a little hard getting back to this with work needs taking priority. However, i have started a new comp of the Witiko and will have it up soon with a new background scene. As well as a New Thread and new work that has been brewing for a little while. i have managed to start some new character base models and over the next little while i will be getting this up to view the work in progress. thanks to every one who's commented on this image so far and i hope you'll like the new comp when its posted....should be soon.

Etcher-good to hear from you, i have been working on some new models that will be in a state to show off soon. what i can say is that this new project which will centre around ZB is one that i wanted to do for a long time and it will continue on for a longtime i hope. as for the Witiko, im working on a new background with a little more depth to it, and will have that ready to post soon, im taking a more painterly aproach with it and i think it has good mood.

dustbin1_uk thanks very much, i think you'll like the direction the image takes with him in a more flattering background.

liposuctionguide just to tease you, there will be a model coming of the Witiko in full out transformation.......its in the works right now as well.

thanks all.

I love the shadow of soul bound twin :) I like the mood of the scene and the story in it! I like the fire on his hands but I have doubts about the smoke on the sashes under him. It looks a bit like meteorite type smoke. Anyhow it's nothing. I love the image! (I'm working on Sting Lady too ;) )

I'm really liking the new image. A great improvement on an already great piece. Is the background painted? It adds a new strength to it. The one in your final entry was very weak in comparison. It's good to see the twin make an appearance in this version. I really like the flames and the colour scheme. Also how your eye is led from the foreground to the background where the twin is. Glad you are still working on this. It should be on the top row :tu:

bryzol- Thanks very much, i did a large test print yesterday morning, its hanging on the wall and ive been making some harsh crits, and notes. Changes have already begun and the final hi rez will be up soon.

brettSinclair- good to here from you. a few more tweeks and it will be ready to go. i have a few more models in the works and an idea that will be fun for my next thread. work has been busy, and im zquezzing more zb in every chance i get.

dustbin1_uk- Thanks so much.

rasmusW- Thanks again.

Captain Sensible-wow, thanks. I thought hard about the composition. working in lots of triangular forms and sweeping flows to move your eye around. the smoke was noted early in my crit and was changed last night along with some others. the background was all painted in ps with some good ref. and in the end is ment to be printed 24" x 60". i agree, the black and smoke backgrounds that were done in zb were not strong, however i was liking the gray faded backgrounds i thought they showed the model well and kept the focus on the figure. and of course it was alot of fun as well.

maxinkuk- thanks, your right. and a list of other tweeks will be done as well, before the final. i like looking at it large on the wall, it helps a great deal to change the medium and see the work without a light bulb behind it.

thanks all.
