Backstory: A super secret government project allowed experimentation on convicts. These criminals were the worst offending in history. The governments aim was to erase the memory of these felons and turn them into killing machines for the battlefield. They thought they could control the felons rage and killing ability and harness it for war. They were wrong. One of the most notorious serial killers in the country was the first and last to be experimented on. His right arm was amputated to allow for a robotic crushing arm equipped with the up-to-date laser rifle technology. His other bodyparts were cut off then sewn back together to make them more enhanced. One night during an important surgical procedure to re-wire his brain their was a lightning storm which caused the equipment sustaining Diesels augmentated body to come alive. He awoke like Frankensteins monster in a fit of rage and killed all the medical staff and escaped from the maximum security facility into a desolate junkyard. He suffers from amnesia but everyday recounters bits of information about who he was. He vows to seek revenge on the people who made him into the monster he is today.

This entry is very interesting for it will need the combination of great ZBrush sculpt and Hard surface fun. So will he be a super villain or Super hero as his memory's starting to come back in pieces and know he's actually a killer?

Great man..... Nice sketch and concept.... Just make sure the character has been balanced, May be I'm wrong...

Cause the right arm has heavy weight ....

Fantastic sketch, great character, should be really fun to model. But I don't really get the name ether?

mantegra

I appreciate everyone's fast replies.

SolidSnakexxx: I guess he kind of would be an anti-hero like Venom. However, before he was transformed into this current monstrosity he was a notorious serial killer so I guess karma has come back to haunt him now. But I would still classify him as a villain. I will also try to build everything in zbrush and make his mechanical arm more organic like. I have never used zspheres before but this is a good opportunity to try it out. However, I will probably have to resort to building some hard surface stuff in an external 3d package. But we'll see how it goes.

sendhilv: The right arm is larger however, most of the right side of his body will be comprised of hydraulics and stuff like that to allow him to lift his arm. It supposed to look top heavy, sort of like Hellboy's arm. But I do agree that it will be tricky to get the pose right in order to make it look convincing.

Codeman, Harmonic: As for the name, I kinda see what you mean, but I always had the idea of a punk-like looking character with fuel exhausts in place of a mohawk and for some reason I thought pothead would be a cool name. Don't ask me why, I must have been drunk. Can always change it later I guess.

Ok, finally I update. It's easier for me to explain with pictures of what I have done so far so I will keep the text short. First time I have used zpsheres and it is rather difficult, took me 2 days to learn properly. I got my base mesh down and then sculpted it to the desired shape but wasn't happy with the topology. I tried retopoligising in zbrush however I feel it was taking me too long so I took the base mesh into max and modified it to what you see below.
base_topology01.jpg

Because a lot of the stuff on this guy is inorganic and hard surface I decided the only real way to do this was in max. Zbrush is good for organic stuff but not so good for hard-surface stuff. So far I have done a blockout of his cybernetic arm.
front_and_back_wip01.jpg

Close-up
close_up_wip01.jpg

And boot
boot_wip01.jpg

I haven't sculpted many folds on his pants as of yet because the folds will look different in his actual pose so I will only do that after I pose him. I will also add the extra stuff like the kneepad, gloves, bracelet, etc once he is in his final pose. I am going to see if I can sculpt some inorganic stuff like under his arm and ribcage and use it as a base for the pipes and stuff that will sit on top. I also thought that the name Pot-Head didn't really suit this character since he is a killer so changed it to PsychotiK. I think that suits him more. Oh, and happy new year! :D

Lookin' great dude. Actually, you can hard edge model to a degree in zbrush: you just block in the basic shape with a zsphere based object then use the retopology function to make the clean hard-edged topology as it would appear in max. It's not fast or ideal but it can be done, and one of the focuses of this contest, at least as I interpreted it, was to do as much as humanly possible in zbrush (which is why i went through the pain of it). :tu:

JasonI know that it is advised to do most of the model in zbrush but from what I read in the rules it says that models built entirely in zbrush will earn bonus points. I am not really interested in that, I am just treating this as a fun portfolio building exercise and also I do not have much time to retopologise everything. I will probably end up using zpeheres to make little wires and pipes on the final model though cause I know that will be easier. Thanks for your input.

I managed to pose him over the weekend. Transpose master is a very handy tool and I couldn't see myself doing this without it. I was wanting to also finalize the cloth folds but due to other life commitments I wasn't able to get as much done on him as I wanted so I still got a lot of late nights ahead.

Thanks for the words of encouragement gents. Only updated till now because I recently just got off a very long flight and am still jetlagged so haven't been able to do anything until now. I am back at work now too so am probably going to find it even a challenge to get him finished, but we'll see how it goes. I just worked on laying out the base mesh for his mech-arm, so it's pretty mundane at the moment. I still consider it a blockout so once I have layed out all the big pieces properly I can then go in and add the little bits of detail and refine it more.

SolidSnakexxx (http://member.php/?u=12969): Thanks dude, however, I still only consider that previous image only a blockout.

fluxist8070 (http://member.php/?u=79291): I took your advice and added some spikes to his mech arm. :tu:

maxinkuk (http://member.php/?u=85530): Cheers mate :)

wethand (http://member.php/?u=84746): I initially had the base more flat but decided the slant makes the pose look more dynamic and makes him look as if he is coming down on his opponent. I am going to make the base made up of junkyard scraps and stuff- if I have time of course. Thanks for input.

Update: Now that I am back at work I am finding it more difficult to work on my character. We have been crunching late nights as well so haven't been able to work on him during the week. Only this weekend have I managed to work on his arm. I was hoping to get his arm finished this weekend but to no avail. I will see if I can get his arm done during this week.

maxinkuk (http://member.php/?u=85530): The arm was done in 3dsmax and then imported into zbrush. I cannot comprehend how it is possible to do something like that in zbrush hence why I decided to do it like this. If I have time I may add little bits of scratches or dent up the arm a bit to make it look more battered.

Update: Once again it has been another busy week at work, been crunching alot so only found time to work on him again this weekend. I started to refine the body more and make the mech arm connect with his shoulder. I thought it would be cool if the flesh connecting his arm looked all burnt and botchced up and held together with little pipes. I may add stitches and other frankenstein-like details later. Still need to do all his other accessories, e.g., belt, glove, chain around arm, etc, so still got a lot to do.

The latest update of this has just pushed this considerably up the ranks! The work you have done on the face and neck is awesome. Update: I wasn't happy with the way the arm connected with the shoulder so I decided to refine it a lot more. I wanted to add more tension within the skin and give it a more melted look, like it is tearing apart away from his body. Freddy Kruger gave me inspiration for this idea. I do believe it looks more disgusting now ;)
Still got to refine a few parts a bit more then I can start painting.

mantegra,

Amazing. Flat out kick ass work.

How did you achieve the overlaping skin-sinewy area of the shoulder. Any chance you recorded a movie of the process?

Incredible top flight work.

mantegra
02-08-09, 05:20 PM
DAnconia: Thanks mate. Have taken note of your request and you will find a lot of new shots below.

ravioli_rancher: Thank you sir. For the melted skin area I just used the standard brush tool drew a lump of flesh, then flattened it down and pinched it so it looked tight and stringy. I also masked a few holes in the flesh and then recessed those areas inwards. It took a lot of work but I think it paid off.
No movie of the process I'm afraid but will be posting my transpose video and turntable soon enough.

Update: Wanted to get some polypainting done this weekend but felt that detail were lacking in some areas so I decided to do another refinement treatment of the whole model. Also did a base as well which took me 1 day. I will spend the rest of this week polypainting however the model will probably just end up being simple colour schemes since the deadline is end of this week.

Man, it has been a long night. I was playing around with different matcaps and lighting and rendering and struggling to find what would work best, and then I decided that a simple material with colour and a light would do the job for now. The skin is the only thing I have been working on so ignore everything else, they still have old matcaps on them and will be replaced. I would be interested to hear any crits as to how I can improve him.
