Jp man - that's looking awesome!! I'm loving the progress on this!!

One thing though that's kinda sticking out to me a little is that mesh texture stretching by his right shin - especially in this angle shot - the shin is very prominent and it catches the eye a bit... Might wanna see if you can fix that...

Otherwise - excellent all over man! Keep it up!:tu::tu:

Wow.. Just stumbled on this thread. Nice work.

This looks like the frontrunner to win from the entries I have seen thus far.

The current render is a bit too dark/black...

SolidSnakexxx - thanks buddy. :) Yeah I see overwatch as a long range sniper and/or a stealthy night hunter his optics really give him an advantage at night so a night scene makes a lot of sense to me.

brettSinclair - Thanks you sir, I really dig your work as well. :)

Seavannah - thanks a lot, yeah he does have a lot of little detail goodies all over him. :)

pitchepuck - thanks my friend. :)

Captain Sensible - thanks!

3dzeiro - thanks, I appreciate it.

Gohanf22 - Thanks Shane, keep plugging away on Nightfall, she's improving every time. :)

Shames - thanks man. :)

Hamilcar - thanks, he'll have some more lights on his, the rescue strobe and his pda will both have some soft light to make him look a little more interesting on the back side.

chindian - thanks brother, fixed the hex pattern all over, a lot sharper and more even now.

Chris Spade - thanks, yeah I'm struggling with going dramatic without being too dark...it's harder to light than I originally thought it would be...workin' on it.

Lucky_1 - thanks man, Blabjab continues to impress me. :)

D adami - thanks, I really dig Valiant...I like those thick Alex Ross style heroes.

Moni-Poroni - hehe thanks, Deaf Destiny is gonna rock you're doing an amazing job with her. :)

Gordon V - thanks, yeah I'm working out the darkness issue.

threetails - hey appreciate that, Witiko is looking really cool.

************************************************** *******

Ok just a micro update tonight:

I've been getting feedback that the lighting is too dark and the colors too muted, so i decided to play around with the lighting and materials tonight, I also resculpted his hex pattern all over his body, it was stretchy in parts and uneven...looks a lot sharper now. Put the old one in there for comparison. I like the muted colors of the last version, this might read a little better, but I think I may have overdone it a bit. I still have a ton of painting to do, so I'll have my work cut out for me this weekend.. :)

spimmy - thanks buddy. :)

pitchepuck - to get the bright rim light I think I'm using 3 lights at max intensity all in the same place.

abyss103 - thanks you sir.

SolidSnakexxx - thanks my friend, yeah I think it's a good compromise between dramatic light and still showing the model...I guess I'll stick with it.

-FoOD- - Hey thanks Gra'Nox is rockin' hard buddy, keep it up! :)

I am new to Z brush and I am learning as I go and much of it comes from this forum. I was wondering when you did the hex patterning did you do it all in Projection Master? Also how did you get it to tile seamlessly? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I really like how it came out and im not sure of the process or how hard/easy it was to do. Obviously easy for you since your skill level is out the roof. Great work! :tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::t u::tu::tu:

01-30-09, 12:38 PM
Haha Shane, yeah I love half-life 2 and the episodes. A buddy of mine works at Valve so I have more than a casual interest in their games...they always produce top quality products. I guess you're referring to the combine elite soldiers? I guess the single eye thing is somewhat similar to mine, not so much to be considered a rip off though I don't think.

Abberant - No that's not a stupid question. :) Actually I didn't use projection master at all:

I made a seamless hexagon alpha texture in photoshop and then used the elastic brush on a low intensity setting and the DragRect stroke. I set the brush alpha tile and wrap mode up a few levels, masked out the area I want to put the hex pattern on and drug it in. Hope that helps. :)

Shane - I think they were pretty focused on Left 4 Dead until recently, though I'm sure another episode of Half-Life 2 is in the works. :)

Etcher - Thanks man, I like your sketchbook busts, very cool. :tu:

Another smallish update - I spent a lot of time painting the body and detailing it as well as the boots and mask. As he's actively involved in combat I made him a lot grittier and dirtier...I also played around with the key light and kicker lights little, I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

Jp it looks fantastic so far. Lovely dramatic lighting and pose.

I would say you could go a little further with scratches and scuffs. Break up some of the detail textures with cuts maybe. Even a broken knife on one hand. Maybe the knifes have dents and dints where they have go caught on bone and armour of his previous victims.

Your image is great and maybe that is not the style you where going for but I love a backstory in an image so they are just ideas :D

Keep it up mate

anyway, top work! :tu: :tu: :tu:

jp_smith
02-01-09, 04:32 PM
-FoOD- Thanks buddy, the reason I went with green is I wanted to indicate the fact that it's night and he's using night vision mode which tends to be green in color so there was a method to my madness. The red dot on his helmet represents an infared flashlight beam that's used in dark situations to enhance the light amplification of the night vision. I guess it does kinda look like a stoplight though...it's something I can play around with but I wanted to explain why I made that choice since a couple of other people have brought it up.

captkiro - hey thanks, yeah zbrush does a pretty decent job if you play with the lights and settings...the bummer is you can't use the matcap materials really. Fortunately I don't have to worry about skin with this design, because I don't see a way to make a good skin shader with the default zbrush materials.

Etcher - Thanks again man! :)

bryzol - Thanks, I'm loving Sting Lady's development...I'm glad you chose that pose.

SolidSnakexxx - Thanks Yong, Mantis is really looking great. :)

scottlerock - Thanks, yeah I may go back in and scuff him up a bit more...there's a fine line between used gear and shabby looking gear though. Overwatch is a well funded super soldier and is always well maintained except for the wear and tear that occurs during a particular mission. He always gets a fresh clean outfit and gear when he arrives back at the base. I may nick his daggers up a little but they're made of super strong alloys, it would take a helluva lot to break one off. Appreciate the feedback. :)

mantegra - Thank you sir, your character is one of the best of the competition. :)

wethand - Thanks, please see my response to -FoOD- above for the lights explaination.

:tu:

Thanks for the feedback everyone. :)

Hey guys and gals, been a long weekend and I just wanted to show a quick update shot since it's been a few days. I devoted a ton of time to texturing this weekend, whew! ;) I still have a few pieces to go (the throwing daggers, ak47, flares, and other accessories) but at least the main parts are done. Someone remind me next time to not make a character with so much gear. ;) This is not even close to the final camera angle or anything, I just wanted to show a different view than I have been showing recently. Hopefully I can scrape up enough time at night this week to wrap this up. Everyone's work is looking awesome...it's so cool to see the arc of development and how far everyone has come. Great work all. :tu:

Thank you all for your comments and support, it is certainly appreciated. :)

brettSinclair - Thanks man! :)

Teyon - Hey thanks, dude what happened to your entry? He was so cool, why did you drop out?

SolidSnakexxx - Thanks Yong, yeah the blood in the punching knives kind of sells the idea that he just cleared a camp of terrorists, that was the intent anyway. :)

jarlaxle00 - Thanks sir, much appreciated.

bryzol - thank you. Yeah I plan on doing a background with maybe some mountains, some helicopters, and I may try some patriotic touches, not quite sure yet. I'm lovin' the Sting Lady!

Captain Sensible - Thanks very much.

Etcher - :)

Moni - Thanks. I can't tell you what he did, that's classified. ;) Hehe.

gregoconn - Thanks! I like poly painting. :)

chindian - Thanks buddy, I really hope you can scrape together the time to finish Rampage, I know the sand is running out of the hourglass though. At least if you finish him he'll be a kick ass portfolio piece. :)

Marsyas - Thank you very much.

FoOD - Thanks dude, I just saw your sculpted base...totally awesome. :)

threetails - Thanks Cam, all those details are keeping my up all night trying to get it all painted...if I had to do it over again I probably wouldn't have included quite so much stuff. I still may delete a couple of gear pieces, since I think he's on the fringe of being over-cluttered. Witiko rules man, I'm impressed with your paint job so far. :)

spimmy - thanks man, you rocked it on your entry! :tu:

Finners - Thank you, I checked out your character, the pose is really awesome, but you might be over-thinking his base and kind of killing the drama of the pose. I'd keep it simple and have him secured by his back foot to a cliff or the ledge of a building, etc. Then the focus is on the character where it should be and not the elaborate base.

Gohanf22 - Thanks Shane, I was sad to see you drop out, you've come a long way since the start of the contest. Best of luck to you. :)

electricCat - Thanks man, War Eagle is looking very cool. :)

I haven't read the whole thread so this might have been mentioned already, but if The Patriot Act was a guy, then he would probably look like this.

And you got my vote, btw...

Congratulations for your excellent final result Jason. It had to be you or Dr Root, it was very difficult to decide which one of the two to vote for.
As I said before, your piece was of outstanding strength, really coming at you, almost scary, and what you want to do is to have a reaction, don't you? So I thought that on that count it was the most successful. And looking at the criteria I thought it was the one nailed it the most, that's why you got my vote.

jp_smith,

Congratulations.

If you send Overwatch to offload studios (paid for by your boss :D ) you can intiate your 3D scanner with a 12" Overwatch model.

This needs to be printed, and sold. Or placed infront of Pixologic headquarters or their Siggraph booth. :D

Then you can license him and have the video game as a launch title for the PSP4.

Awesome character.

congrats Jason, its would be great to see him animated now, making his way thru enemy lines sneaking through traps and razor wire to take out a target, and then a harrowing escape to an awaiting air ship.....this work just sparks the imagination...well done.

jp_smith,

I was so busy with other garbage, I only now found your post capturing the all-important bottom-view of Overwatch's base. So, after only two months, a long since relevant :cool::tu: to ya.

The love and kisses part is probably great cause for concern among the generals and joint chiefs. Hopefully he doesn't have to peel potaters when not stabbing scumbags.

Once again, amazing stuff, ass kicker.

Hey guys, been awhile since I've posted, been super busy, but I wanted to stop in let everyone see the awesome Overwatch 3d print that Ownage.com did for me. The detail is outstanding and the paint job is very good, I couldn't be happier with it. :)

Beautiful print! Did you have to pay for it or was it a prize? :tu: Great work.

jp_smith
08-11-09, 12:46 PM
I paid for it myself. Ownage uses a perfactory printer which has a much higher detail smoother finish than the zcorp machines that companies like Offload use...this print is approximately 12 inches high.

I wish I could see it live. What size is it?

Hey Chris, It took awhile, about two months, but from what I understand that's not typical, it's usually less.

Amazing! can you explain to a newby how you acheived that octagon pattern, thanks.I asked the same question earlier in the thread. Here was his answer

"I made a seamless hexagon alpha texture in photoshop and then used the elastic brush on a low intensity setting and the DragRect stroke. I set the brush alpha tile and wrap mode up a few levels, masked out the area I want to put the hex pattern on and drug it in. Hope that helps. :)"
