Hello all, my name is Adam Skutt and i am a third yr student at College for Creative Studies in Detroit. I also work part time at a game company called Reactor Zero in Ann Arbor MI.

Super Villain - Dr. Heinrich Von Shtickinya

During the second world war Heinrich Von Shtickinya was one of the Nazis most ruthless and cruel Doctors. He was assigned to the chemical warfare sector in which his task was to develop a drug that could create super soldiers. However as his tests progressed he became more infauated with the suffering of his patients than with creating the of the drug that was called for. As he delved deeper into human depravity the concoctions he created were reported to have many horrendous effects when administered to the prisoners, found documents describe instant internal hemoraging, mutations, hallucinations and liquification of internal organs. After the war ended and his personal study documents were found it was too late and he had already escaped.
Dr. Von Shtickinya is believed to be hiding deep within the South American jungles where testing drug concoctions on himself has left him permenantly disfigured. He awaits the time when he can return to the fatherland, amass an army and take revenge on those who have sent him into hiding.

Powers: Carries around drugs with varying horrible effects, kept in large syringes on person.
Also it is believed that he may have finally developed the super soldier drug and that he may have super strength, speed and agility.

So i started working with zspheres tongiht, ive only ever used them once or twice before, but i suppose they worked alright. Although im pretty sure i could have done this alot faster jsut doing some good old box modelling in another applicatoin..

Oh and I used the "Bingo Jackson method" to model out the hand....if it wasnt for that i woulda been screwed. I set the adaptive skin to the second level of density so i had a little more to work with to get the general shape.

The sculpt starts to form quite nicely. You might want to check the facial proportion at this stage and be sure to sculpt the ear (in seems a little indent at the moment.)

As your sketch shows the character's fully clothed. Are you going to do the full body as well? I think it would be a good idea, so that the model would be more realistic with clothing atop, Look forward to see more. :)

started retop on the head, and making the base-mesh for the glasses, the teeth and gums are a basemesh by alex alvarez that i downlaoded a while back from the gnomon website. I need to adjust their size and all that still i kind of just stuck them in there for now. Im not sure exactly what im going to do with the body yet, i will do some thinking this week. Im going to montreal for about ten days on thursday im bringing my laptop so i can work a bit, hopfully i can get a couple posts up for u guys.

The new base mesh you retop rocks! :tu: :tu: Did the glasses were created from ZSphere as well? It looks so detailed and I've been dying to know the technique to create this sort of hard edge / techy elements. BTW, it seems like his head's spliited in the middle, is it part of his new design?

joe55
12-30-08, 10:47 PM
really nice new head! love the expression

askutt
12-31-08, 06:03 AM
Thanks Guys im glad you like it.

SolidSnake: The glasses I made in maya, but you can make the exact same thing using zbrush primitives, masking by column then inflating using the deformations menu, the split in his head is jsut becuase ive not sewn it together yet, its not complete....but soon.

Hey all, i got a little work done tonight while im resting. Progress is slower than i would like but im sure once christmas break is over i can buckle down and catch up. I also want to say since i am in montreal right now, that it is an awesome city!!...i know some zbrush central members work here at ubisoft and i am very jealous. I think i know where i will be sending portfolios and demo cd's when im out of school. Ok heres a little update.

Nice! Liking the theeth a lot.

The face is looking cool, nice expression but it all seems a bit superficial. I mean, I'd go a few levels down and focous more on the base head lines.

askutt
01-05-09, 10:54 PM
HEllo.....thanks for the comments guys, i took a wine break tonight and got a little more done, i will start the body next week when i get home. I still need to import the glasses and and finish the face but i am fairly happy with the way the hair turned out. I took your advice and brought the face down a few levels did some smoothing and made the lines less superficial , although i left some the way they were because im not going for a super realistic sculpt, more stylized because of the contest. Hope you guys like it

Hey everybody, got the basemesh for the overcoat finished, i was watching hellboy and became inspired by the nazi kroenen character, i really like the leather coat he wore, so i googled nazi overcoats and sure enough the leather ones were there and in my opinion they look way more sinister, so instead of a tweed material for his outfit i think i am going to go with leather. Tonight i want to finish the torso basemexh completely...at leat thats my goal. Also for an assignment in class i have due next week i have to do some concept art of an evil character and a good one, so for my evil guy im goin to redo the concept for this guy except much more finished, so i will post that next week some time as well!

Did some coat work tongiht, im liking the leather cracks and stuff, not 100 percent happy with the way the leather is folding yet tho. I think im going to add some big stitches so it looks liek the arms have been re-stitched back on, a bit inspired by that gears of war art.

dear gosh, that is coming along incredibly well. I love the detail on his leather jacket, highly convincing! Beautiful action pose, too. One thing though, the rear (his left) foot is looking awkward. Maybe easier to fix with slightly higher subdiv level?

This is looking great, like a proper bad guy. The expression is fantastic, very menacing and disturbed.

With regards to the swastika, the nazis were very proud of themselves and made a point of having their symbols on show. So it makes sense to keep it (why would a nazi character wear a non-nazi emblem?), as without it he just looks like a random nutter, rather than a cog in an evil killing machine.

You could try looking for other badges used by the nazis to use on him instead, but it will still cause upset in some viewers no matter due to the subject itself. I don't think you will have any problems with the judges, as you are not glorifying the nazis but creating an evil villain within an historic context.

Keep up the good work ;)

k the boots are done, im jsut finishing up the pants then the stand. Im not sure what kind of stand i want to do yet. Later this week i plan to start painting and doing some rendering and lighting tests, i have a question too, can matcap materials only handle one light??

super model. I don't think the action pose works. You need a pose that enhances the terrific qualities of the character that you've captured. Really sell the character. This is truly a comic book character.

I can see a character like this appearing in a movie, Batman, Spiderman, etc., etc.

jp_smith
01-27-09, 07:45 PM
Looking great man. In regards to the swastika, nazis have long been the token villains in comics, movies, and games with this symbol plastered everywhere. I know some German artists here are sensitive about it, but I really think it adds the proper touch of evil to the design. :tu:

jp_smith
01-27-09, 07:52 PM

jp_smith
01-27-09, 08:08 PM
I like the pose in that it's dynamic and expressive...but at the same time I have no idea what he's doing, wrestling with someone to inject them with the syringe? It's cool, but doesn't make much sense...not that is has to. ;)

I think his skin tones look too pink and healthy for this character...I see him as looking more vampiric in regards to his skin...very pale, waxy, and translucent so you can see the tiny blue veins under the skin. :)

Great work! Keep it up!

I like the new stance and camera angle!

I would definitely bend the left toe more so he looks planted on the ground.

Great polypaint, he looks great. For this view I would change the way the coat floats so that it doesn't stack behind the arm or at least creates a negative space between the arm and the upper end of the coat.

I prefer the lighter one, the dark one seems too heavy and you can't appreciate the details as much. His coat becomes overpoweringly dark and too high contrast

Beautiful sculpt though :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

I would also opt for the lighter one. You don't want to lose those details ;)

HEy all, so i have the model done i think, im in progress for making a stand, ive spent the last few days playing with lighting and compositing with matcap materials, theres no compositing done with this render except a little depth of feild. Hope u all like him!!

Heres a nice low quality render, zbrush keeps crashing when i do the higher quality ones, i will have to deal with that soon. This image has a little photoshop love, composited in a couple lights since stupid mat caps will only take one, also some depth of feild from zbrush, and a little clouds for background for now, im not sure what painting im gonna do for the base yet, something simple as to not draw attentention from the model

Really fantastic piece of work here. A complex scene, really impressed at your control over it.

Devil's advocate time...

1 thing... I'm sure I'm not the only one to mention it, but by using the shwastika (Spelliing?) you kind of make it hard for yourself to win this. After all, Pixologic are fairly unlikely to want Nazi imagery over their marketting materials...

Perhaps something reminiscent, but different?

Thanks monterstermaker i appreciate your comment, ive followed your work for quite a while and i think its awesome, im glad you like what ive made.

MonteCristo - Thanks for the compliments, about the swastika, i wasnt going to use it for that exact reason, but i got some advice and some other images form past villians that proudly displayed the swastika, so i figured if im going to make a nazi i might as well go all the way, i dont endorse nazi's but i think that wothout the symbol he would be lacking, hopefully pixologic doesnt frown upon it

Thanks!

I just noticed the addition of the David's star. The choice of symbols is very questionable, however the quality of your work is undisputable.
Overall very solid in a technical point of view.
