View Full Version : Action Hero – Napoleon Blown Apart
By Nate Beckwith
– Napoleon Blown Apart (Villain)
His hate for all things taller then he is only match by his lust for power and respect. He revels in destruction, he yearns to be feared, he aches to control the world around him. But he is short so very very short. Some would say tiny, but if they did so within his earshot they would find themselves blown into very very small bits, some would say even tiny. For he is affected with S.M.S. (Short Man Syndrome), which is a disease that affects those who's stature is disproportionate to their ego. This overcompensating lust for power is what drives him.
Destruction and stealth are his tools for global conquest. His anger can be channeled into anything and released on his command with explosive effect. If the object is an explosive device his power of anger is multiplied a thousand fold. His stealth is byproduct of his height or lack there of, people eyes just pass over him and notice nothing special. This however enrages him and feeds his need to be noticed by others, to rule the world with a tiny fist!

Ah, great name! I see what you did there.
started on the zsphere:
zsphere_start.jpg
zsphere_start_a.jpg
Had an issue with the polys in the left hand being flipped. Smart resym wouldn't work. So i had to export to Silo and resym there also refined a bit.
Played around with the face to get a better idea of him.
zsphere_start_b.jpg
zsphere_start_c.jpg
sorry I'm posting these all at once.. didn't have internet this weekend.
Playing with the hair a bit, i wanted him to have that Napoleon like hat be hair and be more modern. Still a ways to go though.. Also added eyes.

also anyone know how i can place an image with out having it be a thumbnail?1) Link to an externally hosted image, using [img] tags, or
2) Upload an image as an attachment , and click the "Paste image into post" button to the right after you upload it. This is supposed to insert the code right in to your post, but I have to copy and paste the code next to the attachment. Change the code from ATT to ATN, if its a mundane image and you dont want it to show up in the recently uploaded pictures bar at the top of the website. (for instance, don't upload 3 pics in a row using the ATT code...its bad form)
Pixologic would prefer you do number 2, as that way the images are locally stored, and cant be lost with time, or external hosting changes.
I suppose it would have been easier just to refer you here:
http://www.pixolator.com/zbc/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_zbc_display_image s
.
Started adding detail to the body. Can't decide if i want him to be pudgy to have more muscles.
zsphere_start_e.jpg
Ah ok i see, Thank you Bingo!

Love the concept sketch and that's a great start on the sculpting part
you can drag and drop "[ATT=118800]picture.jpg[ATT] (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27118800%27,%27Blah1.jpg%27,1,0% 29)" in your edit window
(works for me)
Keep it up !

N8 Really Gr8!
Awesome character concept. My only critique is that you should make him a little bit more flabby.

Playing with proportions, trying to make him look shorter. Although i like the triangular shape of him in the concept. So i might have to pull back on that forehead.

This guy looks creepy , looks good , good luck on your progress
Very cool. As long as the anatomy works, no one says it can't be stylized. I like where this one's heading. Loads of character. Keep at it!

Great piece, it looks like you still have to sculpt his feet there so what I'll say here may be just premature but I'd try to make his feet a bit bigger, still small but he looks like he's disappearing from there.
His face reminds me of Orson Wells. Is that deliberate or have you just got there incidentally?

I am thinking about the feet/legs.. maybe they shrink down a tad much...... it is very dynamic though..

thanks for the comments everyone!
Haven't had much time on this, hopefully i can knock out alot this week end. A lot to do though.
Here is a small pose test, this is far from final. Just a small test to see what pose will work.
pose_test.jpg
lol kinda looks like a flasher.. he will have pants... sometime.

01-09-09, 12:27 AM
lol at the flasher! Creepy!
Excellent cartoony style you have. Cartoony, yet with a grounding in anatomical accuracy, as all the best toons are.
I can't think of any crits so far, just keep going with what you have, It'll look great :)

I love this little guy, his legs are so cute :D Very nice style that you got here, I'm looking forward to see your final entry N8!
Thanks for the comments everyone.
Started on the belts that will hold all of his grenades, explosives and teddy bears. :P
Using The topo tools to make the new geo, still trying to figure out the best way to retain the sharp edges, might just have to crease them all by hand..
Topo_belt.jpg
Topo_belt_2.jpg
goning to model the explosives next, should be fun. Then Re-topo the body.

This is a really great character! You can tell just by his overall design, pose and expression exactly what he's all about which means you're doing a helluva job!
What a great character! I particularly love his facial expression, and that hair. The whole design feels very solid.
Neat idea, using retopology to create clothes. I'll have to remember that. :)

Progressing very, very nicely! Really digging the overall feel of Mr. Blown Apart.:)
thx for the comments people, i just hope i can finish! No Left 4 Dead for me.. must work. :P
Im trying to keep him simple no micro detail yet. Still have to find the right pose, then i can add folds and wrinkles to his clothing.

playing around with transpose master... Forgot to record. Need to do another more dramatic pose. Kinda want to see him in the air though.

Solid pose :tu: Tells a great story. Nice work!
Trying out a new pose and playing with his coat. Tried to fatten him up a bit too. But huge amounts of work ahead of me.. I see some late nights in my future.

Hehe nice character there.. somehow i like the comic-styles more and more. with all that super-realistic, anatomicaly correct stuff out there people tend to forget about the main idea in art: expression. and yours has that absolutely. grim, slightly arrogant and angry at the world because he is so stumpy ;-)
that reaching for the grenade pose really makes napoleon pop... very fitting: short, bad temper, slightly mad...
maybe you should actually give him that "hand-in-vest"-pose for a beauty shot?
great work :tu:

You've created a great little character here! The one thing that I would critique upon would be his feet. They would be too small to support him as a figurine. There would be breakage issues. But that's only if it gets printed. Otherwise it's perfect! :) :tu: :tu:

Awesome update and great pose... I love this entry especially for the caricature proportion and very clean sculpt! :tu: :tu:
Tweaked the pose somewhat, made him reach more. Started adding wrinkles, trying to only add ones i need though as its easy to go overboard with them.
