For years he treveled around the world to see different cultures to learn all kinds of languages and martial arts. especially baton and sticks combats. all based on defence.
the hedgehog is his symbol for smooth quiet moves and his combat style.
he got his name from his last combat teacher somewere in asia.
now he lives in tokyo. in the daytime he works as professor...
his main weapon is a baton which is able to shoot away little stings.
also he has got the long stings or quills at his suit. the quills at his arm are sharp and very dangerous for attackers !
more background :
I had to ask him before I write down something wrong!! or somthing he don´t want to make public.
He is a friend of mine. I met him long time ago on his way from singapore to bangkok. He was sitting in a dark corner of the trainstation, when I saw him first. I wondered about his behave. he didn´t look strange or afraid of something. it seamed like he studie the people around him in a calm way...
we had the same way and talked the whole trainride. he was never surprised about my interest in his storry.
He came from a little city in east canada. His family was common. nothing special... no dead parends ...no violent father... and they had enough money .... nothing what him let to leave his family or his country...
The reason why he left his home to travel round the world was to find his own way, which he couldn´t find in his old life. he left it behind.
On his ride across lots of countries he had to realize that most of all people in the world had never got the chance to live in a normal way... without violence.. without hunger ... without danger ... without fear ...
from this point he knew what his way would be ...
the end of this journey was than the beginning of hedgehog the super hero.
sorry for my bad english :p

I love this one, great design.
nice and simple, this is totally the way to go, good start
Cool. Looking forward to the model!
Out of curiosity, are you going for browns and greys? They tend not to be popular colors for heroes in comics, so that'll make him stand out as really unique too.

thanks to all..
yes, I think he´ll be colored in brown, black, gray... hedgehog like ;o)
maybe I´ll use wooden armor parts for his suit...

Great design! the quills give him a fantastic silhouette.
I agree about the silhouette! He is VERY eyecatching, and the backstory is pretty good.
The arm quills may be hard to render (maybe not), but are the most beautiful part of his costume.
VERY Creative!:tu:

Very cool concept. I really like his emblem. The overall design's very eye catching with all the spikes and stuff. Not to mention it would be a great fun to sculpt them. Just my humble suggestion, perhaps if you put a bit more into his background story like what subject does he teach and his motives to be a super hero, he'd be even more believable.

OUCH! Liking this one a lot. Nice concept sketch too. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Darn you! LOL. After an intense weekend of concept sketching I was going to post my character tomorrow....."Sledgehog". Oh well, beat me to it! Well done.;)
I especially like the chest emblem. It has a very primitive (I mean that in a good way) iconic sort of feel to it. I'll definately be watching this one....as soon as I sketch up a new concept! lol
nice drawing .looking nice
I will look forward to it

thanks a lot for all comments !!
I have updated the background of my hero a bit. My english is so bad that it took longer to write something than modelling the first steps of the model
but here now the base mesh and the first result of sculpting after one hour...and two hours of writing and searching the right words

after some sculpting to get right proportions, I fit some parts and split the body in several groups to get more devisions in each geometry...
now it´s time for sculptimg the quills

Nice update to the Hedgehog. Looks like you are going at a steady pace... And looks really great too. Did the armor came off from mesh extract?
pitchepuck
12-23-08, 10:34 AM
I´m glad you like it... I´m not shure if this was so a good idea... but I´ll go on.
No, the armor didn´t came off from mesh extract. I dont like this way. I did it with the retopology tool. this way is much "cleaner". and then exported to 3dsmax, were it was extruded. so I´ve got a better lowpoly mesh, which I could better handle with transposemaster later on.;)
KrakenCMT
12-23-08, 12:06 PM
Actually, if you mesh extract from the low poly mesh, then it usually turns out pretty clean. Its' when you try to extract from the high poly mesh where you can end up with jaggies. But the retopo tool works just as well. :)
Anyway, you've got a great start here! :tu:
I would just look closer at doing something more with the boot and glove design. Right now, they look too separated with the straight line cutting them off from the rest of the design. I would suggest making them integrate better with the overall design by creating more dynamic lines where the gloves and boots meet the legs and forearms.
Maybe look at the line angles you've created in the chest-piece and see if you can do the same treatment to the gloves and boots. I think it would create a more unified design. Just a suggestion.

Nice progress, and quick too. I really hope your zbrush model matches your concept because it looks really nice.
Good luck with the quills, don't prick yourself.

thanks for the comments and help!
I have to say that this is still the basic model and colors.far away from the finish  this is maybe 10 %
Its looking awesome, kind of like an old-school Captain America mixed with spike from the newer x-men series. You are moving really fast! START THINKING OF KOOL POSES! That way you wont have to waste time re-sculpting things to fit your new pose.

12-23-08, 02:14 PM
One time when I was doing clothes for a female character I used the mesh extract on the high poly and then used the re-topo tool to get a low mesh with good polyflow :)

my first try putting some quills on the head... I´m not sure if it fits so good. but it´s going on ;)

That's load of subtools for the quills then... But it sure make your character looks really unique!

well, here now an update of my work...
I had a x-mas brake for 2 days.
I thought about the quills at his arm and back. first I wanted to make them very long. but it´s too dangerous for him self. I think they will be shorter.
he must able to handle them...
now I´ve got a new peoblem... my pc can´t handle the poly count anymore.I´ve not enough RAM and cpu power. when I try to use POSE MASTER my PC crashes !!!!!! WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can not place the quills before the pose is not ready! ...

Wow, the character's shaping very beautiful... I like the quills at this length..not too long nor too short..
BTW, how big's your model poly count? Unable to do pose because of crashing is not a good thing. Hopefully you will get it resolved so we can see the hedge hog in action.
pitchepuck
12-28-08, 09:49 AM
I´ve only 2 GB workspace...
and the model has got about 22 mil poly... I need this polycount for the details. the body is still too low. it has only 6 divisions. but I can´t go higher!!!!!
I think it´s over and I have to stop it now :( or I´ll make the best out of this... what ever:confused:
SolidSnakexxx
12-28-08, 09:52 AM
Wow 22 million polygons? That's a lot.... I think with even at 15 million polys you can get super fine details. May be you can check on certain subtools that may not need that high of the amount and retopogize some. That way you can be even more economical about the poly count and overall performance.
Also adding 2 more GB of RAM wouldn't hurt either..as the RAM price's fropped drastically..
pitchepuck
12-28-08, 10:08 AM
15 mil poly? mybe without the quills :D
the topology is ok. I think it can´t be better. the quills are the problem. they have only 3 devisions. but he has got so many of them
XP cannot handle 4 GB...
I´ll try to pose him on my notebook with 3 GB RAM
maxinkuk
12-28-08, 10:21 AM
There are two things that you can do even before adding RAM, one is to keep all subtools in low res, easily done with the Subtool master that has a "low res all" button. Then up the resolution of only the subtool you're working on.
The other thing to do is of course to retopologize the model. It's quite a bit of work but this is exactly one of the things it's there for.
pitchepuck
12-28-08, 10:32 AM
is it necessary to switch the subtools in the lowest resolution before using transpoese master?
The design on this character is superb. Looking forward to seeing this posed.:tu:
maxinkuk
12-28-08, 10:42 AM
No, Transpose Master does the switching for you and then once posing is finished brings them back in same resolution level you were before recalling it. So if you were starting from high res he's got a lot of computing to do to start working a lot to go back to, if you start from a lower res you make things easier.

12-28-08, 11:11 AM
Cheers, I hope this works for you. Also, check if you need all those polys in the quills. I did a quick test here initializing a Sphereinder to make a quill more or less like those and with 70,000 polys I get a very smooth one.

The other thing you might want to try while working is to shift and ctrl drag a green rectangle over the section of the model while you work on it, when you let go it selects just that area and hides the rest of the model. This reduces the strain on your system and only works with that portion of the model. You can reverse the selection by shift ctrl and drag in the dead space of the canvas and this will provide a full view of the model again. shift ctrl clicking in the dead space with invert the selection.

The chest armor looks quite cool..like he's had a rumble session with wolverine himself :)

12-28-08, 06:58 PM
Hey pitchepuck your model is looking great. I am bummed about the quills though. I understand that they are a bit impractical but they look so cool! I think maybe you should reconsider. Or maybe find other places to add quills to enhance the silhouette. He seems a bit lacluster without them.

WOW! Looks like this is going to be one tough contest!!!
Not to mention the fact that people are flying ahead in their progress.
This is a great concept you have here my friend.
My one crit is that I think he looks better with just black eyes, no pupils. Maybe make the mask a bit greyer and the eyes glossy?
Seriously though, I love this character! I'll have my eye on this thread for sure!

The chest armor looks quite cool..like he's had a rumble session with wolverine himself :)
BTW, how did it go with transpose stuff? Any luck and no crashing?I think it´s no memory problem. ZB crashes when I go from Tpose to normal subtools...
I think there are some subtools damaged... I don´t know
dustbin1_uk
12-29-08, 06:47 AM
I think I may have had this issue. Are you using 32 bit or 64 bit PC?
I found out that if it's 32 then you have to set your MEM settings to a max of 2gig as that's all windows can allocate per application and you get memory overruns otherwise.
pitchepuck
12-29-08, 06:54 AM
I have a 32 bit system.. thanks for your help. but it does not work. ZB crashes again... WTF:confused:
now I found out that ZB crashes only when it´s trying to switch back the hand-subtool. but I cannot find somthing wrong on the hand-mesh:confused:
dustbin1_uk
12-29-08, 07:37 AM
Ah I see, one last thing you could try, keep a copy of the hedgehog file somewhere.
Then take the hand tool, if that's the one that seems to be the issue, export it, delete it as a subtool, then select another tool not to do with your project, say a sphere, import the exported OBJ, and then append it to the model.
Look for artefacts on the hand. It could be a corrupted group of vertices.
pitchepuck
12-29-08, 07:51 AM
when I split the handgroup so I have got one hand in each group, than all went right. no crashes. when I put it together again it crashes. the mesh seams to be ok... and there is a second mesh which is not allright. the normals allways switches when it´s go back out of TposeMaster
I wish I could help you with your problem, I hope you're able solve them. Your model is looking great so far.
dustbin1_uk
12-30-08, 12:26 AM
Could you retopo one hand, use projection to pick up the details and then scrap the old grouping?
So you have a totally new polymesh for the hands?
pitchepuck
12-31-08, 06:30 AM
after I couldn´t fix the problem with the hand mesh I ignored it and put each hand in one seperate subtool... this worked fine
now I´ve started to work on the hero pose. I´m not happy with it, yet... but I think this is the right way. it´s a kind of fighting pose... but maybe I´ll change it.... who knows :D

I really like the action pose so far...the arms are looking really amazing but I´m not sure about hedge hogs left leg (the outstreched one)
Don´t get me wrong..but if i would have a fight - I hope it will never happen :D then I would squat down a little differently...with my shoe sole on the foor...
Maybe that would look a little more dynamic???
Hard to explain it in english...so I hope this picture helps to show you what I´m talking about...

Looks cool to me!
My kid calls Hedgehogs HodgeHegs! lol!
i have a bunch of Pocupine quills that have the most beutiful brown and white stripes but anyway...
i like the character and pose and the only things i would tweak is the extended leg maybee raise the knee a bit like he planted it firmly, less straight and maybee make more of the back Quills like if he is at rest the spines are down flat to the back and when he needs to protect himself he arches his back and the spines raise up...
but great job!

Been waiting anxiously for an update on this one and I'm glad you havn't disappointed. Your model and texture are both looking really nice. It would be nice to see in a render which wasn't so dark for a closer look :)

hey guys, I have a problem. I rendered never before in z-brush. and now I wonder where the hell are the shadows??? do subtools not get shadows from each other???
i´m using the standart mats. not the mat caps!
and in the light settings all shadows are switched on.
I hope you can help!

anyway, nice looking face and nice textures so far!!

01-11-09, 04:28 PM
You may have an ambient material like toy plastic on. you may have to nudge the settings or modifiers of the material to suit your lighting and save it as new mat. and no shadows do not cast. Its just that weird airbrush-ie look. This guy is looking great! He looks as if it could be practically accomplished in the real world. :tu: :tu:

Pitch, this is great stuff, I love the base and the paint job, perfect colors and materials. I especially like the reflective puddles. Y'know if you can't get the shadows to work maybe you could either paint in the shadows in photoshop for your final render, or render the shadows out in Maya or Max and composite them. Not sure if that'd break the contest rules or not tho. Really nice entry though man. :tu: :tu:

Coming along extremely well here!
I recommend when you do your final renders to also do a GI pass with the lights (setup 1 light with aperture 90, render from strongest light source angle) and comp it together with the other render in Photoshop. It will add a bit more realism to the image.
dustbin1_uk
01-12-09, 12:57 AM
yeah!! looking awesome!!
Try to increase your document size to get rid of some of that aliasing.
The shadow comes in when you go to the render menu and hit the Best render button.
You may want to experiment with the light types. Point light should give you the shadow effect you're after.
http://www.zbrush.info/docs/index.php/Lighting
Pay attention to the light type section.

Well you would win flat out on a production line! :tu: :tu: Great work! My only critique would be that the black overall seems a bit ultrablack. It may just be an exposure adjustment in photoshop, or just a tiny bit of a color, Like dark blueblack or yellowed black (like street lights) in the background, but still remaining blackish. well just think of how far ahead you are now! :tu: :tu: :D ;)

On the light set up, the 1 and 3 one looks just stupid ;] the 2 one looks just great for the character, dont think you will get any better results ;d but still, it dosnt look that great for the scene ;/ Anyway, i just love your work, my second favorite for this contest ;]

Every time it gets more impressive. This are some amazing renders for Zbrush.
I must hurry up to finish my model so that I can start experimenting with lights, materials and render settings.
I kind of like the first one, it's a bit too strong, but it's got the right atmosphere, the second one is better on the character but lame on the hydrant.
I'd say that the first and the fourth have a better consistency across the scene, the elements blend better. The second is better lit on the character but the background doesn't blend as well as it does in the others.

Wow...such impressive light test...you've got serious lighting skills in ZBrush, man.. I really like #2 it looks natural but with a tint of yellow light form a lamp post. :tu: I'd go for something like #2. #1 is quite dramatic lighting...but I think it's too vibrant for the scene.

I like the logo you have designed for Hedge Hog..may be a small Japanese character imprint atop the English characters would be cool as well. :)
i like how you have the hedgehog written with the spikes through it, but my problem with it is that it's just a plain serif font, nothing interesting to look at, i think you need to put a little bit into possible trying to create unique lettering for the name. and some integration of the japanese would be nice, cause i do see that there is some japanese on the fire hydrant, so it would pull it together a little more. but all in all great work
The pose is looking great... keep it up!

Hey pitchepuck, good to see your progress :)
I'd like to know how to improve video quality too, my tuntables look equally fuzzy on youtube.
Nonetheless, excellent job! From what I can see this looks superb in all it's 3d rotating glory. Really, really strong pose makes this one heroic-looking hedgehog :tu:
As for the logo....... well, the icon is nice, not sure about the font  Maybe you should create the typography rather than using a pre-existing font, or at least alter it substantially. The idea of having spines striking across the text is cool, though
Anyway, this is more about the sculpt than the logo, and I really can't fault you there - nice job and best of luck!

Also wenn ich mal was gerendert habe... hab ich erst ein einziges mal in Zbrush... lol und auch generell erst einmal..^^dann ist das wieder verschwunden nachdem ich mein model angefangen habe zu bewegen.
weisst du was ich meine?

Really great turn table, pitchepuck :tu: :tu: amazing work and render.
I think the bad quality generally from YouTube itself...it seems to compress vid some more....

moni-poroni thanks ! it´s easy to render with turntable. you only have to press "best render" and then recording the turntable.then it will render each frame of the video in best quality.
SolidSnakexxx thanks dude :D 0 points for youtube

Cool model and pose. Recommend to add more to the line of action you lean his torso forward a bit more.:) Try it out in photoshop see what a little more of leaning him forward will do for the pose.:) Loving the miodeling and texturing!:tu:

Ismail W thanks Ismail for the comment. I was thinking a long time about the pose. and I know what you mean. but it will not work. I´m happy with this pose. anyway, thanks :)
Wow! That turntable looks great! ( I mean: not the quality of the vid, but the quality of the pose and sculpt) :tu: !

Cool :tu: :tu: :tu: Really cool :)
Nothing to crit :)
But one question ;)
maxinkuk told me that I can change the colour of the light...:)
But can you tell me again where?
In the light Tool palette besides the <<Intensity-slider>> ?
I tried that and it´s for example green then..but that changed nothing with the light :(
And is this possible with every material?
Thank you
pitchepuck
01-28-09, 01:04 PM
thanks moni,
yes that´s right. you first shoose a color in the palette. then click on the color field besides the intensity slider.
I think it is possible with most of the materials. I didn´t check this out.
normaly the light change the color...
I use only the standart materials. with the matcap materials you only can use sunlights and no other like point lights or spot lights.
Moni-Poroni
01-28-09, 01:08 PM
Thank youu:)
Hmmm...well I´m not surprised it doesn´t work :)
Any hidden camera here ^^???
I think that´s aaaaall my fault.
Thank you so much! I´ll try it..and try it..and try it ;)

Wow, what a great looking render! My only minor crit would be that some areas of the base (which look like they're meant to be concrete) seem a bit on the shiny side. But that's just nitpicking, because it really looks quite nice!

It's going to take a lot to beat this one. Great job on everything and wonderful render. I had no idea that ZBrush could render out like this. Just wish it didn't take "millions" of tries. Also, wish renders didn't crash out ZB on my Mac.

Unbelievable Zbrush lighting. You set the bar very, very high.
you base platform is a bit distracting. the colors are too saturated and the details are too big. if you make the base more subtle, it will make viewers focus more on the character. nice modeling and lighting btw.
I think that the lighting is great! :tu: ! Not shure about the purple on the base though.

gotta agree with the other folks. Character is stunning, base detracts from character's beauty. would tone it down quite a bit. can't wait to see this guy finished!
