View Full Version : Action Hero - Righteous
Artist Name: Anthony Minto
I think I have gone a bit overboard with the origin story of my character and not left enough time to actually make it lol!
Good luck to everyone entering.

You've already set the bar pretty high for yourself with that bio. I'll be watching to see how this guy develops.
Thank you chaps! :D
Now the difficult part: designing the character. I have a couple of ideas and they are broken down into two possibilities. Do I go for an all out comic hero type costume? Or do I keep it based in the 'real world'?
I'm going to work on some concepts and I'll post my WIP's soon.
Cheers again for the positive feedback, now where's that coffee pot?

Excellent work on the Bio. If you are as tenacious with this part your model should be outstanding. Good job.

Wow impressive back story, and character.you must be a graphic artist?
can't wait to see more,more,more..the creativity here is amazing!!! :D
Thank you for the great response to the back story guys. I appreciate you all taking the time to read it. Luckily most of you seem to have been able to stay awake whilst reading it so that must be a good thing lol!
Me? A Graphic artist? If only! Worked in a crappy marketing job up until about, ooh, 3 weeks ago when Mr. Credit Crunch decided my services were no longer required. Job hunting begins in earnest in the new year. Onwards and upwards dear reader!
Back to the contest. Here is a quick sketch of the '14th century - First Encounter' Mortimus I quickly threw at the screen this evening. Not sure about the Elvira/Gene Simmons/Conan haircut. I thought I would do a fair bit of sketching and try to get under the skin of the guy. The blue tattoos are only present when Mortimus is transformed into Righteous.
It is but a sketch (a bad one at that) and first attempt at building the character. I want to produce a model set in the present day. Still not sure if I go for the full 'SUPER HERO' costume for this guy or not.

Hi Guys,
I had a little more time to play with this character today and I have started to rough in the major leg muscles. Here's wishing you all a really Happy Christmas. Don't eat too much turkey or you'll have no room for your pudding!

Looking much better! There's something weird about his jawline though, maybe not enough chin. I like the facial expression though.

this was an awesome story, teary eyed when brother sebastien died. he's starting to look like kratos from god of war. maybe the sword will twist him some way.. into a spawn like character.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND GOOD CHEER TO ALL!:D
aiman - Yep, I agree with you about the jaw being too small. I'll work on this a bit more.
adamlane - Thank's for the reference image mate. I sculpted the leg details using bodybuilder reference photos as I want to give the character an over exagerated look (although this may change again!)
desmoda - Glad you like the backstory. I like the idea of the sword twisting him in some way, kind of what I had in mind when I wrote the story (Mortimus takes on the persona of the Angel of Vengeance when he picks up the sword so this makes sense to me.)
Cheers again guys.
Now that Christmas is over I have started to work on the main figure some more. Still lots to do on the actual costume. Re-worked the face of the character and overall muscle definition. Now need to work on the hands! I hate hands!!

Rough idea for a costume.
wip8.jpg
i like i alot, the model is great. there is 1 thing bugging me though, the expression on his face is sad and a bit silly for being on a super hero, my suggestion would be to turn up the corners of his mouth so its more neutral.

Very excellent start.
Looking good MINTY, you've gotten a lot done so far. I know this is just your costume rough-in but here are my suggestions, hopefully you can understand my paint-over.
1.) Move the mask to line up more with the nasal-labial fold.
2.) square off and block in the sides of the nostrils, this will help with putting the mask along the nasal-labial fold.
Looking good, keep up the good work!

Maybe he's really a villian. Love the work so far.
Thank you for the comments everyone. I think the torso and arms were a little stunted too. I have elongated the trunk of the body more and pulled out and bulked up the biceps too (which I think were too short).
Having a bit of a nightmare with Transpose. My subtools are becoming bloated and larger in size when I try to pose them using Transpose Master. Also, is there anyway to keep the models subdivision history when extracting (for example) a face mask/helmet base from the original model? I hope this makes sense!!
Here is a shot of the base character model so far:

Minty, looking cool so far. I'd check your anatomy a little, the thighs and forearms seem disproportionately short, your deltoid attachment point needs some work as well as the bicep/forearm attachment...Check out Zack Petroc's anatomy sculpt for reference, it's a pretty strong resource: http://gnomonology.com/tutorial/350 I'm a firm believer that the most important thing, especially on a superhero, is to build on a solid anatomical foundation. All the detail and bling won't help if your building blocks aren't all mortared together properly. I really dig your character, hope you don't think I'm being overly critical.

looking cool, i like anatomy as well, strong forms and good ref, you seem have a good start. once your happy with all of the anatomy you've got to move on to character building and it shouldn't hinder you from stylizing your guy. the trick is knowing were the line is. it looks like you have it under control. nice work so far.
Looking better, start drawing out the pose, don't try to figure it out in 3d! You will just mess up your anatomy and proportions. Transpose master is awesome but it doesn't work too well with too many subtools so try to pose him now and add the rest of the tools later. As far as I know, you cant really keep the subdivision history after you extract.
Thank you all so much for the help. I really appreciate it.
jp_smith - Jason, you are not being overly critical at all mate. I am simply a hobbyist and I really appreciate it when people like yourself take the time to point me in the right direction and offer helpful tips and advice. I'm a strong believer in feedback, how else do we learn? Your post really has got me looking at how I am approaching the model in a new way. Thank you for the Zack Petroc link too it's great stuff.
threetails - Cheers for the tips. Now watch me muck it up lol!
aiman - Your post gave me one of those 'Ohhh! I see' kind of moments. Basically I can get the base model right, pose the little fella how I want to and then create other parts (armour, mask, belts etc) using the retopology tools. Top stuff and much appreciated.
Cheers again everyone. Now back to the drawing board!:D
I've still got lots to do on the model (refining the anatomy etc) but I wanted to have a go at trying Transpose (having never used it properly before).
Things could have gone better! Basically, the mask (which is a subtool of the main character) is ever so slightly too big for the characters head (yes, I am being sarcastic  ).
Has anyone else had this problem? Or am I just lucky? Any advice would be great.
Oh, have a very Happy 2009 too! :tu: :D
Cheers.

did you model that separately?
Also did you export it to another 3D application for say UV unwrapping?
I found that if I export a tool and import it to Blender 3D then, export from there back into ZBrush, I get this scaling issue.
I think I solved it by storing a morph target before export in ZB and selecting the morph target option in Blender before I import it there. I'm sure most of the commercial 3D applications do the same.
If not then I'm not sure how it got that way, could you explain your workflow?
The only thing for it is to use the deformation pallet or scale and move transpose tools to get it back, though the deformation pallet would be better as it's more accurate.
Cheers for the advice mate. I basically created the mask using the Topology tools in zbrush and appended the mask as a subtool. No external apps used.
Maybe if I keep hitting my PC with a hammer I'll get some results lol!

Cheers for the advice mate. I basically created the mask using the Topology tools in zbrush and appended the mask as a subtool. No external apps used.
Maybe if I keep hitting my PC with a hammer I'll get some results lol!did you any sculpting on the mask before you append it to the body? you should append it right after you made a adaptive skin out of the new topology! and use "make adaptive skin"...not "make poly mesh 3d" to make a mesh...
and the body must have a "normal" size... not too big and not too small in the world space. ZB has some problems with this. you can check this when you export the lowest sub and import it in any other 3d prog like max.. there you see if the model has got a normal size. after that you change it in ZB with scaling... good luck
dustbin1_uk
12-31-08, 05:39 AM
Ah! that would be it!
After you created the adaptive skin, if you scaled the mask instead of zooming (by using the scale button on the right in the default layout, as if you were zooming in and out) then that would explain it!
Yeah pitchepuck is correct that you should attach it BEFORE you move or zoom or anything.
I just read through the troubleshooting forum and this seems to have been a problem for a couple of people using earlier versions of Transpose Master.
I just downloaded the latest version and fingers crossed this seems to have sorted the problem out.
I feel bad that you guys took the time and effort to help and all along I was just being a muppet lol!
Cheers for the tips guys.

I really like how clean your model looks. Very tight. The only thing I can see is what someone already pointed out about the biceps and forearms. I did a quick sketch in the attachment below to show you exactly where the problem is.
The main forearm muscle (brachioradialis - the large muscle above the thumb on your model) you have sculpted to where it attaches on the inside (the side closest to the body) of the bicep, where in reality it attaches on the outside.
Also the bicep appears too sausage like and doesn't look like it attaches to anything. However, your bicep sculpting looks a little better in the pic in post 55.
Hope this helps!
Rev.jpg
Cheers for the reference sketch. I really appreciate the help. Hopefully your advice is helping the arms look a little better. Here is what I have after a bit of re-working using the suggestions made.
Happy 2009 to everyone! :D :tu:

The biceps should be one head length. Also the shoulder muscles should reach the bottom or crest of the pecs. The shoulders are way to small vertically.
Also the forearms are in the wrong position. They look like they are in the palm up position instead of the position that the hands are in now.
As big as this guy is make sure to give him some good lats to balance the anatomy out.
Everything else looks good from your last post.
Good work, but now the bicep has become too long. Just shrink it near the top and have them inserting under the deltoids and you'll be there.
testure
12-31-08, 03:54 PM
it's definitely looking better- but your proportions are slightly off all across the board. Out of curiosity what type of proportions are you going for here, a 6head figure or 7? something else?
I've gone for a rough 8-ish heads high heroic proportions. I took the render from ZBrush and, using the liquify tool in Photoshop, I played about with the deltoid/bicep meeting points to get a better understanding of how this may work before touching the model. Hopefully this looks better.
I'll have to work on the forearms more to get the muscle alignment in the correct position with the natural rhythm and flow of the hand.
I also think the lower legs in the modified version are too long and would more than likely look better the way they are in the original image on the left hand side.
wip11.jpg
arms and forearms looks strange and anatomically incorrect.
MonteCristo
01-01-09, 06:04 AM
Heya Minty. Watch out for those leg proportions won't you? Currently the Upper leg is looking very squat, and the shin is looking overly long. Might want to adjust that.
Keep it up!
SolidSnakexxx
01-01-09, 06:44 AM
I like the new height of the model. however, I think the shin area is a bit too long making his proportion a bit odd. Other than that I dig the mask and everything you sculpted. :tu: :tu:
This (http://fineart.sk/index.php?s=8&cat=12) should help you redistribute proportions based on the 8 heads ratio. The images you want are on page 2. I ll be using it myself, hope it helps.
KrakenCMT
01-02-09, 08:13 AM
The bicep is looking much better. The proportions are working much better too though the knees seem placed a little high making the thigh seem a little short and the shins a little long. Now for that forearm...
The brachioradialis is now correct at the elbow area, but not correct at the connection near the thumb. I made another sketch to show you how it wraps around the forearm when the palm is facing backward.
The only time the brachioradialis muscle is straight like that is when your palms are facing forward or up as in when you are lifting a barbell.
Your doing great!
Rev2.jpg
Thank you all so much for the great feedback and encouraging words. Thank you also to Kraken for taking the time to post the sketches and to fess for that superb reference link.
I've had a bit more time to play with this today and I really wish I had paid more attention to my Biology teacher many years ago at school! (listen to your teachers kids lol! )
Here is a quick update. Hopefully it is getting better rather than worse.
Cheers

01-02-09, 09:32 AM
No, that's actually a LOT better for the forearm and biceps.
The taller figure proportion (8 heads high) in your comparison seemed to work better so I used that one for the following suggestion. I thought the knee and shin looked a bit stretched and the thigh too short. The sculpting seems fine, it's just using the move tool to get it in the right place. I used the liquify filter in Photoshop on your image to show the correction as well.
Rev3.jpg
Thanks once again for going to so much trouble Kraken. Using your suggestions I have made a few changes to the legs. I think this maybe right now (he says crossing his fingers lol).
wip13.jpg
Coming along well. The inner thigh muscle looks a little off (too thin) I think. I could be mistaken though. It also leads into the thigh as it goes up to the crotch. Keep up the great work!
go out and get some body builder reference, either online or a magazine you can pick up at almost any grocery store. this will help you a TON! everything else being advised is also pretty solid, I would make sure the knee is just above the 2 head height.
I think that I'm happy enough with the figures proportions and anatomy to move this on a bit further.
Given the characters backstory, I thought that something similar to a 'Monks Habit' would be fitting to the overall look. I have blocked in this rough 'cape' for the time being and will see if it fits the image later. I think it hopefully gives him a more 'sinister' feel. Yes he is a 'hero' but he is not exactly a cut and dry 'good guy'.

Hello all,
This is my very first attempt at using Transpose Master (so don't laugh! ) for a full figure pose. Still learning this stuff as I go. I think it's getting there (obvious issues with the mask over the nose etc and the hand pose needs a lot of work).
The cape/monks habit is still only a rough model without any sculpting applied yet.
Lots to do an so little time to do it in. It'll be Christmas again soon!

This isn't really an update as such. I was wondering how my base mesh pose would look as a book cover as I thought this would give me an idea as to whether the pose is 'heroic' enough and would make me concentrate on the basic values before getting to involved with the sculpting details (if that makes sense to anyone let me know lol  ).
I did this image in photoshop as a kind of reference image/guide. I thought I would place it in my WIP thread to show you the ramblings of a mind that has seriously had too much coffee today. Now on with the details!

Hi guys and thanks for the comments.
I've had a real nightmare week. Lost some of my work and had to almost start again to play catch up today  . I am going to finish this if it kills me  !
Guided by the 'cover design' image in my last post I am now trying to select some colour schemes for Righteous (as the Righteous in the 21st Century - see my characters backstory for an explaination to this).
Re-topod the base mesh (although it really could do with a lot of work) and now have to re-sculpt a lot of the high details which unfortunately have gone the way of the dodo.
Anyways, no use crying over spilled milk and all that. Here are the colours I am leaning towards. :D
wip18.jpg
SolidSnakexxx
01-21-09, 06:38 PM
I like the color scheme you designed... :) .only tiny thing (But that could just be me) that might improve the visibility of the design and distinct the areas some more would be the torso area as it is now has the color close to the cape itself. Which I think might work better with a bit of distinct color... so the breast / torso area will be more interesting. but maybe with the current color set and applying different materials may just suffice and look great.
I think you are right about the torso colour being too similar to the cape. I will work on this a bit more.
The 'cowl' has been re-topo'd and this is a texture test. Still lots to do and so little time to do it in. Pass the coffee! :D

Very good, yes some work on the color scheme for the costume but the face is so very believable and appropriate. And the costume design is solid, it's looking very neat.:tu:
Hi guys,
I had a chance to sit down and work on the new model today. This is a render of the model showing the colour scheme I have chosen for the costume.

I'm still not sure about the logo. It has it's origin in my characters background story. It is made up of a pair of horns relating to Mortimus' time known as the Red Devil suring his Pirating days and it also incorporates the tip of the Sword of the Angel of Vengeance. Just in case anyone was wondering what the blob on his chest was lol!

Nice colours, that backstory was cool. The comments about the arms I agree witha nd see you have made changes. it may help to use ref, there are a few great muscle ref images at freedomofteach.com in the downloads section and a ztool that ryan kingslian put together which shows some combinations of skeleton, muscle and skinned, that may be a great help in guiding you quickly while doing this model.
Great work really enjoyed finding this and looking foward to updates.

Hi guys,
As you may know I lost my original model a little while ago and in my spare time this week I have worked on this new version of Righteous. I am not sure if I am going to finish him in time for the deadline but it has been a lot of fun and I have learned so much from the experience.
Now that I have posed him (which I didn't record a video of d'oh!) I can get to work on the details (hands, feet, more folds in the cloth, working more on the muscles etc) and I hope to post more soon.

Cheers mate,
I will finish him, but whether or not it's in time for the deadline is another thing lol!
BTW, your video with the tip for using subtool master as an alternative to transpose master was a godsend. I was finding that using TM subtools like the eyes, belt etc were not transposing exactly how they should be. By merging the models into one tool, posing and then grp splitting the tool and reconstructing the sub-d history worked a treat. Cheers very much for that.
Nice, like the anatomy and very nice cool.
Thank AVTPro. I still have lots to do. I'm dreading the hands, I hate sculpting hands, can someone develop a 'make hands' button please!
I want to try and pose the hand into a fist as I think it will add more (no pun intended) punch to the pose.

Another very small update which I did in an hour after work today. Worked on the hand, I think putting it into a fist was the way to go (but boy do I hate hands lol!).
I have also worked a little more to the folds of the bodysuit and need to tighten these up a bit more. Still lots to do with the cape and the boots and that right knee is bugging me.
I worked a little on the belt pouches (although I may change this and add different items more like a police officers belt).
Now I need to get some grub and a good nights sleep!
Cheers guys.

Cool character! The cape and fabric are coming along nicely.
Cheers for the kind comments.
Lots going on in the real world at the moment so this is looking less and less likely to be finished in time.
One really nice thing that has come out of my entry to this contest (apart from learning tons of new zbrush techniques from the amazing artists who have entered this competition) is the number of emails I've got from people asking if I would develop the story as it seems a few people have enjoyed it. I'm no writer but given time I may develop it into a proper short story and maybe see if anyone would be interested in turning it into a graphic novel/comic for fun.
Cheers again and when I have something new to update this wip I'll stick it on here straight away.
Have a great weekend. :D
