Hey man - pretty kool stuff as usual... My vote is for 4... or some kinda variation of that... I like it - seems like a good striking pose. Except maybe the striking arm should be facing forward as if he's about to come down with the blow instead? I dunno - wut do u think?
Looking forward to your updates! Keep it up bud!!! And happy new year... :tu:

Whew...thank you so muhc guys and gals for helping me through the most difficult decision of this contest...deciding the pose.. The decision now is quite clear...I'm going forward with Pose 3 now.and tonight starting small alterations to the topology as the Transpose process mushed up some of the verts and I wanted it fixed.. So here's the first step to the next step... :) Again, thank you so much for your valuable comments and votes...

Hi Yong, good choice for your pose.
Those exploding verts with transpose master, what a pain. I've been doing a lot of that mesh fixing myself a couple of weeks ago, but it's a good opportunity to place lots of edges running exactly where you need them.

mhhh....rrrrrrrrrrrrr.....:confused::confused::con fused:
man, Iīm not happy with this pose... but your character is so difficult to pose... no.. not to pose but to find the right pose. to be honest...I do not like it so far... and I was thinking about it today... but didnīt find a solution...
the position of the claw is hard to find
Ismail W
01-26-09, 02:15 PM
Yong, Posing wise the current pose you have has him in mid action and not full action. He's quite compressed in posture in the torso area. Think downhill mogul skiers (Google "downhill skiing" in the image search options for some visual suggestions.
When it comes to posing him with his claw. Have strong lines of action. Claw back as if to strike and strike hard! :) Turn that torso! His wings are definite assets in adding to the dynamics of the pose! The wings will be like a cape. Splayed at 45-60 degree up. This is a strong character.
Imagine him in the fight of his life. Trying to save the ones he loves dearly. Every last iota of strength is utilized in combating that entire force that stands in his way. Every muscle straining and popping, cause to give anything less is to succumb to failure. When he strains he is tense, torqued. Not compressed. It's all or nothing for Mantis Man. GRRRRR.
Fighting cause his life depends on it, fighting cause if he had the same strength when the organization came into his home, he would not be holding back!
Great stuff! :tu:
PS ( I "grrrr" 'cause I'm in the moment ;) )
fluxist8070
01-26-09, 02:25 PM
I agree,
the twist in the torso should go the opposite direction. Think of how you pull back before you punch.
I think the rest of the pose looks nice!
Hi there, I see you you're gearing up for the final tuning. The Mantis Man is gonna turn out so good! :tu: !

Good advice.. If time allowed, I'll definitely try out your suggestion. Thank you for your great suggestion.

Thank you, - FoOD -. Yes, I decided the feet were a little too small and not having enough character.. So I adjusted a little. Glad you like it.

I've uploade the turn table but I guess it's taking sometime to process the vid. I'll be posting that too once it gets approved. Again, thank you so much for reading.

So impressive! :tu: ! Don't forget to check the length of the right upper leg (maybe a bit to stretched ) and the right lower leg (maybe a bit to short). But then again, judging on just this one picture is difficult so, I could be totally wrong. :tu: !

Thank you, Moni-Poroni. Glad you like the feet alterations. Sleeping is my source of power...sleep well and I shall conquer the world ..... ha ha hah just kidding... I just had a good night sleep so I feel particularly...chippy today. :)
Etcher:
Did check on the proportion and made some minor adjustment to ensure the lengths of the upper leg are what they suppose to be ;) Thank you so much for your concern, it never hurt to have sharp eyes spotting out area that we may missed.
slickytom:
The feet is something man people suggested and I am glad I made the change. And agree that the change will make the connection between the pedestal and the model itself stronger. Thank you so much ;)
Hamilcar:
Thank you, you action girl's coming along so sweet...My Mantis Man wouldn't dare crossing her whip path ;)
N8:
Thank you so much...Frankly I was hesitant with Transpose tool before joining the contest. I did use it here and there more on per subtool basis..But with this, it opens my eyes and lots of possibilities can be done.....
 Daily Update:
Good morning. Did some minor adjustments last night to make sure the length of the legs are well proportioned and re uploaded the turn table.. Nothing exciting.
Here's the turn table:

Great looking pose.
Hi Solid. I know I'm walking on thin ice with these following comments (on a sculpt that I wouldn't be able to make / as a spectator it's so easy to make comments... so : I already apologize).
I'm constantly nagging about this right upper leg being to long. I think it's due to the fact that you don't have enough interlock / overlap between the glutes and the hamstrings. I've attached an image which shows this overlap. In my first sketch I drew the glutes and hamstrings with interlock: this brings the upper and lower leg to about the same size. In the second sketch I first drew the glutes, then drew the hams next to them; doesn't look to wrong, but it does make the upper leg to long in regard to the lower leg. I hope the inserted pic clearifies this as well.
More nagging: be shure to doublecheck the length of the right lower leg, seems a tad shorter than the left lower leg.
Mantis_Tigh.jpg
And More nagging: the right foot seems a bit shorter and flatter compared to the left (hard to judge from the pics and small turntable)
Can you ever forgive me? The Mantis is really living and getting under my skin... . :tu: !

Great pose! I especially like the human hand! It reminds me of the way McFarlane use to draw Spiderman's hands, or something by Hogarth maybe. Awesome!:D
Hi Solidsnakexxx. Beautiful job on the polypaint so far. :tu: !
About the legs ( I promise that this is the last time :o ) I think Gordon-V was referring to this: on the paintover I drew the supposed length of the bones and the pivot points to check if the left and right leg and foot length correspond. I scaled and moved a bit, but you can still see the original placement. If the right foot looks to big, you could leave it at it's present size, but you might wanna' consider scaling the left one down.
Ok, now I will keep quiet and let you continue your wonderful work! :)

SolidSnakexxx,
With the amount of work you've invested in your entry, you may, after finally being able to walk away from your workstation, find yourself with mantis like protusions over a finger, or eye lid. :D
That aside, Mantis Man is, to me, an eye popping top row specimen.
The only aspect of his pose I find somewhat static are his antennae. Maybe the wind, or screams from his terrified oppoents could be bending them back a bit more.
Brilliant work and overall thread.

The rest of the early afternoon was Primitive fun to create a duded missile. The missile by itself comprise of a lot of subtools before I combine them all into one for easy management.

Thanks for such a high compliment, jp_smith. I just like to remind myself that the contest is part of my daily life among other important tasks. :)
- FoOD -:
Thank you, - FoOD -. I wish I could sleep less as I think humans do sleep a bit too much (At one point in my life in my younger years, I was sleeping 2-3 hours a day but that lasted for about 2 years as my health won't allow me to continue so...)
Nattawat_OBBI:
Thank you kub. Glad you like it. Saw your new blog and is looking good ;)
Etcher:
Thank you, Etcher. I can definitely call today ZBrush day ;) I've started the polypaint and will most likely have some update on that tomorrow.
SirNeo:
Thank you, SirNeo. It's now at the stage of fine tuning so I'm taking my time to detail the model. It's so fun sometimes to micro manage our models.. he he he
Moni-Poroni:
Yes, Mid Day update...as this pose is Daily update...and if I'm still rooting my behind on the working chair for a few more hours, there shall be a nightly update.. Just kidding...I've got to go take my Girlfriend for a bandage change and do other humanly chores.
Gohanf22:
In case you do not know yet...I'm the auto-bot that stays in ZBC Forum. Every update to any posts, the system will send the signal directly to my neuron..and alert me to come and post. Just kidding, buddy.. Thank you for your kind words.
 Daily Updates:
All right, it's the daily update time. In fact, tonight's the weekly class with Master Alex but my net speed's not so good. (It's been like this so for a few weeks now). So the lesson's been on hold.
Meanwhile, I've started working on the poly painting again. But it's not quite ready just yet. However the other sculpting part's been done. The inner wing set's now carved with tiny lines (Hopefully you can see in this image) and did some more sculpt to Chip. I'll be back in a few hours, if not too exhausted I will continue on the update. :)

Snake, has the head shrunken down? It's looking a bit small to me. The essence of mantis seem to be dwindling. I look at your perfectly sculpted bug and the guy has just the opposite broad stroke forms going on. thick chest and legs and a smaller head. I was just wondering if this is some thing that you have chosen to do, or if it is unintentional? its not that it's not looking great. its looking freaking sweet. happy zbrushing! :tu: :tu: :tu: ;)
Love the real Mantis in the same scene with him. It totally communicates the idea of the character.

Looks great mate, been following this one for a while now. You should totally put the tiny mantis sorta on his knee doing the same pose as him. Hes a touch hard to see on the shoulder as the hand sorta covers it. Great work and good to see you are so regular with updates.
Hi Solidsnakexxx. I think skullbeast made a good observation there about the head: you should definitely try out a few bigger head sizes. :tu: . Like zeke 3d said: you still have 2 weeks left: great to play around finetuning stuff like this! :tu: !

I'm fine tuning the main material now so that some of the cavities can still show up when texture applied...Thank you for your comment. About Chip, I'm thinking about resizing him a bit or even put him elsewhere..perhaps on the base itself...not sure still..
Etcher:
Thank you...This part of tuning is so much fun...almost like playing music..I've found out that wile I'm using ZBrush I tend to have the most concentration...it's almost like meditation too. The head size will definitely be addressed. Thank you ;)

skullbeast:
Yup, you are right. At first he has larger head then I shrunk down and I think I over shrunken it a tad much. I'll do this refinement when all else is done. Thank you for noticing and happy ZBrushing to you too.

 Daily Update:
Today I'm concentrating on the small wings once again and to the duded missile.. Still working on the poly painting side of it. As for the wings I decided to go for a tad bit of transparency.
You can see through the wings with the use of Document Layer...I'm still trying to find another way to do transparency without the use of Document layer....I did try out the active/inactive subtool transparency thing but didn't work out too well on my model.
Here's today's attempt.

I think that the wings without transparency was better. If you decide to use transparency I whould make the wings bigger, they are to light now (in my opinion). Without transparency they had a "weight" and the proportions seemed to be better. Anyhow this is great stuff! :tu:

Hey Solid
I have loved the idea of mantis man since you started him, even chip :D
The only thing I am not sure about is the rocket/ bomb at his feet :D
I wish he had a jungle style backdrop, maybe. I imagine him as a stealthy camouflaged character coiled up like a sping waiting patiantly to spring in his victim (maybe him is in mid spring anyway :)) from high above the jungle canopy. Or maybe he could be spinging from the tree to help the shot look slightly more dynamic.
Anyway sorry dude it's still looking great :D I wonder if the ZB central guys will do a gallery of all the best super heroes and villains once this contest is finally over :D

stunning amount of details! and the transparency looks awesome.
if you have problems with the best render option combined with active/inactive opacity you can try to turn off transparency, select another subtool activate transp. and then select the wing again (all with the best render option turned on). something like that...
anyway, one of the most impressive models in this contest! love it

Thank you so much. The reason why I put him in the scene with the rocket near his feet was part of the story I laid for him that he was fighting military group with hi-tech arsenal. Then he uses his Mantis power to deactivate the bomb, hence it became a duded one. I'll try to adjust a bit to make the scene more intense. May be more missles like fluxist8070 suggested. Again thank you for your comment and sharing your thoughts.

Hey Solid
Looks really cool ...thinks his looking pretty done:D:tu:
....what you mean gotta get back to work ...you nearly done:lol:
I like the missile but would angle it in the opposite direction - better composition I think
and I like transparent wing but would have the wing print embossed on the inside of the wing casing (Harder covering) ..think that would look cooolio.....if that makes sense ?....just an idea
SolidSnake,
Your work is very inspirational. Thanks for your comments to my page.
And the help..
Your work is in a class by itself.
by the way,
The underside of the skin in the inner thighs is so realistic, it gave me a flash back of some old 30 years ago with I was a kid, catching mantis in the backyard.
It's very realistic. Looks straight out like something from the animal kingdom.
So many contests so many amazing pieces of work this one almost slipped by but I just caught it in time. Great work I agree about changing the missile angle, and if you put more in there maybe a big boy and a few other assorted ones just to show how good he is at avoiding all munitions.

Loving how this is turning out man. I don't want to sound like a party pooper but the missile is kind of detracting my eye away from the character. I don't know if it's just me, but I think if the stand were more simplified, then it would give more attention to the character. I think the platform that you got, minus the missiles will work just fine. But then again, it's your decision so you will probably be the best judge of that. Keep it up.
maxinkuk

Iīve been very busy the weekend.. (with reading tutorials :) )

The wings are amazing..but I agree with the others..
Please donīt get me wrong.. should be no critic-
the missile itself is very cool indeed...and I know itīs part of the story..
but itīs detracting my eyes away from your super cool super hero :)
Hi Solidsnakexxx! About the missile... which you spent a lot of time on polypainting... : wouldn't it make more sense to put a logo on it from the organization that he is fighting against ? You could bring a bit more of the backstory into the sculpt that way.

hey snake,
i just want you to ask if u already enlarged the head a little bit?
like skullmonster said the head is a little bit small. before you shrinked it down, it seemed to be better (just my thought ;) )
another question will you add more detail to the back wings after you resized them? in my opinion there could be some ripples or something maybe like in this picture

Looking awesome Yong! :)
I prefer the small wings, the ones on the right grab too much attention in my opinion. Also, you'd lose the rythm you have with this curve made by the tip of the two wings/hips/elbow/tip of the claw.
He'd probably need the big ones to be able to fly, but visually the small ones fits him better. Again, that's just my opinion.
Keep up the great work man! :tu:
I agree with goldo_O, I prefer the smaller wings, it feels more natural for some reason.

02-03-09, 05:48 AM
Big wing. Adds more of a line of action to the pose in my opinion. It's more cape like.:) To me, Little wing = lady bug. Big wing=Mantis.
From the looks of it , it looks like there's more translucence on the little wing than on the big wing. Are you able to experiment with that on the big wing version?. Regardless, I'd still pick the big wing. :tu: Solid work!:)
maxinkuk
02-03-09, 05:53 AM
In doubt remember that Little Wing is the title of a great song by Jimi Hendrix.
Make the wings a bit bigger, but keep the proportions of the first image, in the second image, the transparant wing is to big (nearly as big as) compared to the other wing, that's visually not as pleasing, imo. :tu: ! Also, you could play a bit with the wing's angle. :tu: !

Hey great update as usual :)
Iīd make the wings a little bit bigger than the original. :)
(If he needs to fly. ;) )
Something between the two versions. :)
I like the transparent look of the smaller ones more.
Maybe if youīd try to combine the transparency of the small wings with a bigger size of the wings they wouldnīt grab too much attention?
Iīm looking forward to your decision.
Iīm sure in the end itīll look awesome ! :)

02-03-09, 03:47 PM
Hey man! lookin great! I agree with the wings needing to be large if he's gonna fly. I'm sure you could find a way for the wings to work wwith the rhythm of the pose as that seems to be one of the concerns. Is he about to take flight? You could make them more splayed out in line with the arms to accentuate the pose and maybe rotate the wings so they are perpendicular to the back? Just an idea... Really cool stuff anyway!:)

That's a great honor to hear you show my entry to your class. thank you so much for your kindness. :)
 Daily (Night) Update:
Today I deviated myself from the main model a bit and focus on something rather minute...the landmine. This I will add a coupel of them in additin to the current missile. I create the piece using SweepPrifile3D to give the rough shape.. Man the ZCurve really comes in handy when you want to create objects like this. After getting the rough form, I converted it to a PolyMesh.
There are things I have to fix such as creating the closed object So What I have to do is filling the bottom part with another geometry. Also the top part, (it seems to happen to most of the Primitives) once gets converted to PolyMesh when you subdivide a few times, the top area would have hole) Aside from that is making certain edges creased.
So I resorted to do the retopology. But it's qutie easy this time around as I can imitate most of the topolines there by holding the Shift key while doing Topo paint. Then I added a few more details by using ither primitive Polymesh. Then repeat the step once again....Now I have another piece to do polypaint :)
Here's the quick process overview:
landminecreation.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('126274','landminecreation.j pg',1,0))

Well, firstly, the model is looking great. Secondly, thanks for the tip about the sweep profile. I wasn't even really aware it existed and certainly not aware it was so versatile.

Thank you, kylehj for your compliment. Glad you like it.
Twitchmonkey:
Thank you. Indeed, the primitive in ZBrush is one of many overlooked features...for beginning ZBrushers. I think the way you can manipulate the primitives in ZBrush is so intuitive and very productive. Not to mention really easy way to create desired shape and form.
Gohanf22:
Hope you feel well soon, Shane. So you will have the energy to get back to the ZBrushing activity.
Etcher:
Thank you so much, Etcher. Your simple emoticon in the post gives me more the courage to scupt further. :)
Moni-Poroni:
Thank you, Moni-Poroni.Glad you like my mini tutorial.. I'm so amazed at how nice people are and continue to give me support through the posts. I'm forever thankful for that.
maxinkuk:
Yup, your advice's real valid. I for got to mentioned that in the last post... But I'd say it here..Thank you so much for your suggestion.
Daily Update:
Have not finish the landmine just yet...As I'll be creating the the tricker wire and stuff. But then I redid the overall shape a bit per last posts..like the head size the neck and the wings. So right now the head's a tad bit larger (Tried a more extreme version but didn't like it), the inner wings are about 10% large and there's more neck detail now..as oppose to the hair.
Here's the today's effort

hehe ..or maybe youīll let us see the slow turntable in your final post...

SolidSnakexxx, your work is amazing. I like the details, and the whole character mantis-like. I think you spent couple of hours to analyse the anatomy of a mantis. So, great work, congratulation for that. I hope I could make this kinda level sculpts in the future as well.

I've been busy on other things....man I wish I have more time and more time...I guess we all do need that eh? Anyhow last night I managed to place the landmine to the base. That is just beautiful. I can not believe the quality of work i see on this site everyday. Always nice to see an update. Can you do an orthographic post? Would love to see this from all angles.
That would be an excellent material to base the sculpt off of.

Nice update, btw, that's a great preview material. :tu: !
 I wanted to ask something about the wings, but I can't find the right words in English for it, so I hope you understand: aside from the wing texture and wing polypaint, try to make the shape as rigid and fluid as possible (like a boat hull or something) otherwise they might end up looking a bit to rubbery or cloth like. I added an exagerated Photoshop image to try and explain. Apologies for my nitpicking and then not being able to express myself clearly.
See ya!

 Daily Update:
Whew...I was so busy yesterday.....glad to be back on the ZBrush station. Today I'm working on the base which I decided to go for a simple design as I want the main character to be in focus. The base's made from (again) the Sweep Profile tool. Then add more geometry using Edgeloop and transform tweaking. After getting the rough shape, I did the topology process to make the shape holds as needed.
The blank area I leave it for his logo. Tomorrow I'll try to complete the base then the rest of the time I'll be spending finetuning. I can't believe the deadline's drawing so near....

Today I spent time doing the rock texture....and add some more bloody splash to the rock....as the scene's about Mantis Man slashes through some baddies... I was thinking about adding some heads that's been chopped off..but I thought it might be too cruel for the contest. I think just some splashes would be sufficient. I'll also be adding some of the blood to his Raptorial blade.
Here's the result so far:
progress_108.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('127201','progress_108.jpg', 1,0))
Hey solid, nice work man, i have a question, how do u get the transperancy on the wing, i want to use something like that for the syringe on my guy but im not sure how... THANKS
monstermaker
02-09-09, 09:49 PM
Ah come on and add some heads. I really like the way you textured him.
good luck!
Marsyas
02-09-09, 09:52 PM
Haha, I thought the heads were a funny idea too. But I don't think they'd really fit. I really like how the wing came out. :tu::tu:
SolidSnakexxx
02-09-09, 09:53 PM
Thank you so much askutt... :) As for the transparency you will have to do it in (2d) layers....What I normally would do for something like this is:
1. Resize the canvas to the double the size you wish for the final resolution (so It will be anti aliased)
2. Place the model as you want it to be.
3. Go to Marker and create a marker..this will let the system remember the angle and size of your model.
4. Hide the subtool you want to be transparent so right now foe me..the Mantis Man will have no inner wings
5. Go to Layer > Create a new layer
6. While at the menu area...also deactivate Render Flatten so the transparency can show through
7. Select the newly created layer and click at the marker...the mode will be placed the old one at the exact same spot
8. Then I'll reverse visibility of other subtools so now only the wings will be shown on this layer
9. Adjust transparency in the Material settings. The transparency will be shown accordingly.
However this can only be used for 2D still.. Wethand has another technique using Active /Inactive Subtool opacity...you cna try that out as well (I'll also give it a try tonight)
Hopw that's what you were asking. :)
Thanks alot that worked well for the glasses. I painted a maertial onto the syring im wondering if i can make something transparent if its a painted on material, i will check out that other tut u suggested too, thanks!!

I have to say this is my favorite concept out of all the Hero Challenge contest. I love Mantis Man! Very cool. I love the fact that he is asyemetrical. I love asyemetrical characters.
Love, love, love Mantis man but I will say Preying Mantis used to cool in my book but they are really big punks.
Pretty much any bug can whoop a praying mantis.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvy-SYQZCX4&feature=channel_page
:) Awww talk about an underdog superhero.
The Centipede and Hornet are where it's at!
Emperor scorpion is okay.
The Rhino Beetle does not do much killing but no one can defeat it. It's too powerful.
Tarantula's just a big weak punk too! Bleh!
Hey you may go through a bug theme story! :) I'm sure you can do tons of designs based on those creatures.

 Daily (night) Update:
Whew...it's getting so close to the deadline now. Today I'm testing mostly on Wethand technique...and post my steps on how to create the live transparency...I think it works in some way...May be I'll use it only for the turn table but the still I'll opt to the old fashion layer technique.
Here's what I have done. (Thanks Wethand)

brettSinclair:
Thank you so much. ZBrush for me still is a mysterious piece of software which I think still has many secrets yet to be revealed. By the way, brettSinclair, not sure if I have mentioned this already. I'm a huge fan of your work. Thank you for visiting my thread.
wethand:
Oh man..come to think of it the term "wethand-technique" does sound like a name of .....porno move..... :o Thank you so much for our kind words.
threetails:
Thank you threetails. It does work well if you have something behind it but when it appears against the black, it will not be transparent...I'm still testing some more.
D Adami:
Thank you so much..BTw, I jsut love your character, the Valiant...really well executed!
Mysfyt:
Thank you sir.. Very kind of you with that comment. :)
Moni-Poroni:
Thank you... : I decided to give Chip a slight different colorso he's distinct atop Mantis Man's shoulder. :) Gad you like the little buddy.
Drakelot:
Thank you so much Drakelot. Your character's comign alng nicely too. I'm also wonder how will you combine all the stuff you sculpted and at the materials. Loooking forward to that.
Seavannah:
You are very very welcome, Seavannah. In fact, shoudl you get stuck at anything please let me know...If I could help I surely would. :)

Man this is looking ace, your piece humbles me everytime I have a look at it.
Your blood specs look pretty painted on. Could you give them a stronger specular highlight?
This is a piece to be proud of.

Hey there's Chip! :) I love the nameplate Yong, very nice! I agree with the blood comment, I think it needs more love. Also, if I can be honest, he still seems really clean on a purely textural level. I think I'd take some time and apply some texture and grunge maps with zapplink. I'm not saying make him dirty at all, I just feel he needs something to make him not look so er...fresh I guess is the best word. He's looking amazing bud, I don't know what I'm gonna do with myself with no more Mantis Man updates to check out every day, I always look forward to it. :) :tu: :tu:
