Really, really great! Nice touch with the bonsai tree! :tu:
01-25-09, 04:43 AM
woooooow. You are realy very great Zmaster.:tu::tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
01-25-09, 05:23 AM
Wow, the Bonzai tree's just fantastic! Really great environment you've created! It fits perfectly to your hero! :tu: :tu:
01-25-09, 07:16 PM
Ok. Finally started putting some apparel on this guy. Made the sandals and straps for him. The straps were mesh extracted and cleaned up (longer process than I thought), the soles were made from the base mesh polys from the bottom of the foot, flattened then used the morph difference method to give it thickness.
01-25-09, 07:23 PM
10 out of 10! Bravo!
One question, what's the morph difference method?
01-25-09, 07:23 PM
Cool sandals Kraken, I love the base and the bonsai tree too. :tu: :tu:
01-25-09, 07:23 PM
Wow this piece is looking incredible KrakenCMT! The quality is really awesome. The sandals are look great, can't wait to see the rest of his outfit! :tu: :tu: :tu:
01-25-09, 07:32 PM
this is so good, i think you've got a winner here. well done, love the forms fo the leg and feet, really well done.
edit- i also wanted to say that i think that you used the direction of your strokes over the leg muscles very well it gives them great tension and the feet are lovely and so familer.:D
01-25-09, 07:37 PM
maxinkuk, I think it could be called something else. I just got used to calling it that. But anyway, basically I hid all the polys except for the ones at the bottom of the foot and deleted the hidden polys. Then I cleaned up the vertices a bit and flattened the polys. Then I went to the morph target tab and stored a new morph target. In the deformation tab I offset the polys a little then went back to the morph target tab then hit the "difference mesh" button. That creates a new mesh in the tool tab with the thickness of the offset I added.
Does that make any sense? It's pretty much the same technique that Meats Meier's uses for his wire method.
01-25-09, 08:02 PM
Thanks for the very handy tip Kraken. I'm sure I'll find it a use very soon.
01-25-09, 08:08 PM
wow. just wow.

Incredible. I'm really looking forward to the texturing job!

01-27-09, 06:11 AM
Looking really cool man ....the base is looking very chilled as well :D:tu:
01-27-09, 10:39 PM
Appreciate the comments everyone!
Starting to chip away more on the wardrobe. Here's the leg armor. Next on the list is the belt and sash.
For the leg armor, I used projection master to apply a custom alpha of the whole design onto a rectangular cube, except for the dragon head which was added separately. I then merged the two meshes then used the deformation functions to bend it into shape.
01-27-09, 10:57 PM
Wow, that piece of armor's really awesome..and great technique as well. Just amazed with your skill! :tu: :tu:
01-27-09, 11:07 PM
Awesome detail man!!! :D
01-27-09, 11:49 PM
this looks pretty amazing O_o
01-27-09, 11:56 PM

01-28-09, 03:13 AM

01-28-09, 04:02 AM
Carry on with this great design and we'll see you at the Top soon...
01-28-09, 10:52 AM
the armour style looks very good, but i tink need a few of "hadmade" details
i like your job man!!
01-28-09, 01:38 PM
Finished the belt. The detail might not be seen too well in the final render, but oh well.... Now on to the sash! Now to find some drapery reference!
01-28-09, 01:45 PM
wow, what clean work, i like the use of your custom alpha's really looking great.
01-28-09, 01:53 PM
Woah!! My jaw dropped. Fantastic details Kraken. It's truly great now.
01-28-09, 02:26 PM
Good job!!! Send more dude.
01-28-09, 06:06 PM
Looking fantastic! The details you are adding are really setting him off! Cant wait to see more. :tu: :tu:
01-28-09, 06:17 PM
Wow, the belt looks fantastic! This piece is getting better and better. Really amazing addition! :tu: :tu:
01-28-09, 06:21 PM
Got part of the sash done. Trying to find reference for the part that wraps around the waist like in my sketch.
Also messing around with creating a new bronze matcap on the side.
01-28-09, 07:28 PM
The costume pieces are looking fabulous Kraken, hey would you mind sharing the material you have on him now? It's awesome. :)
01-28-09, 07:35 PM
Wow, the material...green bronze is looking superb... and shows the big mass of muscles real well. :tu: :tu:
01-29-09, 07:47 PM
jp_smith, I've been putting together several matcaps I've been working on even before the contest. Once the contest is over, I'll have more time to finish them up and release them to ZBC as a set. :) I'll put them in the repository when finished.
Here's the sash pretty much done for now. I'm not totally satisfied with it but I'll probably come back to it later and refine it more if time is available.
wow!! I like the powerful gesture!! really cool! :tu:
01-29-09, 08:09 PM
Wow fantastic! I don't know what else to say it looks amazing. The sash could definitely use a bit more love, but it is looking incredible! :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
01-29-09, 08:58 PM
Add two more arms, and that is Goro!

I don't even think this needs to be painted, it's looking awesome as a nice fine art piece. :)
01-30-09, 04:40 PM
Great new pieces!!!
Looks like itīs already a 3D print ;)
01-30-09, 07:07 PM

Awesome. Kraken rules!
01-30-09, 11:09 PM
this is great, i love the details of the base, with the tree, everything is well thought out, i'm liking your sculpt alot. well done, and that mat you've got going is wonderful.
This is looking very well! I like your renders. All details are realy great.
01-31-09, 01:51 PM
I finally finished the spear model and transposed it into position.
I did checked the polycount and I'm up to 26 million when adding all subtools together. Zbrush is a beast! :)
Still have some armbands and a necklace and possibly a ribbon for the spear to do and that will be about it for the subtools.
01-31-09, 01:55 PM
Ridiculous, every detail is just so amazing. Good job man!
You've heard this but very nice detail and overall design. Respect.:tu:
wow this entry has really come together, nice work!
01-31-09, 03:07 PM
Fully awesome Chris! He looks like he was lifted straight from the pages of a Conan novel. :) Looks amazing. :tu: :tu:
01-31-09, 03:11 PM

01-31-09, 04:02 PM
01-31-09, 05:18 PM
ZBrush is a beast? I think you're the beast mate!
This is draw-droppingly phenomenal work and a huge inspiration, I'm just floored by the detail and the fluidity of the overall form.
Well done, it's work like this that really inspires me to up my game and work hard :)
01-31-09, 05:43 PM
Magnificent work! Definitely one of my favs in this contest. :tu:
01-31-09, 07:08 PM

can i just say i worship your detailing skills kraken. your a beast. awesome work.
02-01-09, 09:26 AM
It's looking pretty spectacular with all the elements in there now! :tu: :tu:
02-01-09, 02:39 PM
Awesome pose and I really like your stylized refinement. He definately looks like he is ready for action!
02-01-09, 03:07 PM
I added the arm bands and bracers and I think I'll stop there with the accessories. I thought about doing a necklace, but decided to leave it bare and buff.
I'm starting now to go back and add finer details to the body.
02-01-09, 03:11 PM
Looks amazing, the only thing I'd say is his design is extremely symmetrical, i'd like to see you leave one arm band off just to break up the design a little. :tu: :tu:
02-01-09, 03:20 PM
This is an amazing sculpt, I would love to know how you get such beautiful lines. Very impressive and very nice composition.
Only crit would be is that his hair line seems to be letting down the rest of the sculpt. Everything looks so beautiful and crisp, the hair line seems to be a little neglected.
This is simply amazing though. The more I see the better it gets. You are a very strong entry in this competition.
02-01-09, 04:11 PM
Great character, thanks for posting. :tu:
02-01-09, 04:25 PM
Really beautiful sculpting. :tu: And those materials and renders make it look gorgeous.
02-01-09, 04:50 PM
Is there an upper end to awesomeness?
02-01-09, 04:55 PM
This pose is really striking!!No pune intended..Really awesome detail on the suit!!! :D
02-01-09, 05:14 PM
Looking really great Kraken!
02-01-09, 05:46 PM
Wow, top notch work Kraken, he is looking so polished. Just beautiful. :tu: :tu: :tu:
One minor crit I think the bracelet's could be a bit sharper, they look great but I don't feel they are at quite the same level as the rest.
02-01-09, 06:39 PM
Nothing to crit..this is beyond wonderful.. I thought he's already marvelous without the armor and such and now he's just....topping that! :tu: :tu:
02-03-09, 09:36 AM
Wow! Yeah, same here, Kraken. No crits. It's absolutely stunning work. That matcap really makes it feel tangible. I wanna touch it!:D
02-05-09, 04:52 PM
Harmonic, I totally agree which is why I resculpted the bracers. I also made them a bit smaller because I wanted more of the forearm to show.
jp_smith, I see what you mean. I'm still thinking about your suggestion. If I do it, I might take one bracer off and replace the design with some sort of tattoo. But I'm still not sure yet.
02-05-09, 05:14 PM
what can I say?
this is unspeakably beautiful...
02-05-09, 05:31 PM
Perfect! Wow I personal see absolutely nothing to crit now, looks incredible. Are you going to texture him?
02-05-09, 06:20 PM
Holy crap man. This is beautiful through and through.
Amazing work... waiting for the texture.. this is such a beut.... great job, very anxious to see final render...
02-05-09, 06:32 PM
Holy KrakenCMT.........this one's getting better and better...and with the smaller bracelet, it shows more of the great arm you sculpted. Very very fine piece! :tu: :tu:
02-05-09, 06:48 PM
Really outstanding piece of modeling! :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
02-05-09, 07:27 PM
God damn man, this is just an awesome piece of work. I cant get enough of it, its just unreal:D
02-05-09, 08:15 PM
just brilliant ! :D one of my favorite works on Zbrush Central!
02-05-09, 10:30 PM
HOLY CRAP!! This is amazing! I love that matcap too. I can't wait to see how you texture him. Great job!
02-05-09, 10:43 PM
Wow his cool. Thats epic right there. Everything on this is solid. Love it :tu:
02-07-09, 09:07 PM
I reworked parts of his shoulder (hard to see in these angles) and added some skin texture too. I'll add some veins here and there and then the sculpting should be done. Then on with polypainting!
02-07-09, 09:21 PM
Fantastic sculpt:tu: pretty much flawless:tu::tu:
02-07-09, 10:22 PM
Superb! :tu: :tu: :tu:  ;)
Agree with the above  !
For me this might be the best sculpt Iīve seen! :tu: :tu: :tu:
02-08-09, 03:19 AM
Wow,....so impressive...this guy looks amazing as is...I can't imagine how grande he would look in color! :tu: :tu:
02-08-09, 03:18 PM
Finished the skin detailing for now. With the little time we have left, I'll need to start polypainting the model. But first I need to revisit the sash and try to clean it up a little more.
Here I put flesh color on him just to get an idea of color direction. He's a bit too flesh colored, but I'll probably add more brown/blue/grey hues to it.
Wow, that is really stunning detailing!! Looking forward to seeing it painted up :) :tu:
02-08-09, 05:19 PM
Awesome level of detail!
02-08-09, 09:01 PM
That's insanely beautiful.. Frankly speaking this guy don't even need colors to look cool  :tu: :tu:
02-08-09, 09:05 PM
This is just unreal Kraken by far my favourite model in the comp.
02-09-09, 08:56 PM
Love it! All that subtle skin sculpting is really impressive. :tu:
02-10-09, 08:03 AM
Sculpting is superb. You can't crit that! I look at him and I just wanna cry!
I think he would benefit from a 'colder' skin tone as you say.
02-10-09, 11:39 AM
I got a minute to post a further coloring test I did in Photoshop last night to. Trying to get some nice variations in skintone here and there. There may be too much variation right now, but I like the direction here. Still thinking of tattoo designs....
02-10-09, 03:31 PM
like the direction where you are taking the model , specially the colors
02-10-09, 07:04 PM
Man, KrakenCMT....this is too much...it's so too good. :tu: :tu: Amazing work on the veins...so realistic!
02-10-09, 09:29 PM
Oh man Kraken your killing me......this just keeps getting better and better
Theres no other word for it....
Wow  , that's lovely texturing on top of the lovely modeling and detailing!! :tu: :tu: :tu: , looking pretty awesome dude!!:)
Pure power! :tu: ! The polypaint is going to be great!
02-13-09, 06:35 AM
Well, the power went out during a windstorm Wednesday night right as I sat down to start working on my dude, but didn't come back on until Thursday morning. That threw my schedule off for finishing a bit. I was hoping to post the tattoo update today, but now I'm still fixing some problem areas with that. I was up extremely late last night and I'll probably be working down to the wire now, but I should still be able to post on time providing no more technical problems arise.
So on that note, good luck to everyone! It's been immensely fun doing this contest and seeing all the great talent in the community! I'll post my final later on tonight.
02-13-09, 11:38 AM
Hi ya KrakenCMT. That's not good having the windstorm taken down the power...Anyhow, I'm certain your final result will look super cool as your progress does and look forward to seeing that. Best of luck, mate.
02-13-09, 03:14 PM
I really hope you're able to finish in time. A real stand-out piece of work. :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
02-13-09, 09:26 PM
Hey Kraken, just know that when you hit that "submit reply" button on your final entry, the stress instantly goes away! Man, your sculpting skills are off the charts! I love the skin you have going. Can't wait to see this guy finished. Awesome work. Good luck!

02-28-09, 11:28 AM
i really really like the amount of detail in the skin. i love the style of the final input! and i think it would be an awesome 3dprint!
congrats! :tu: :tu:
02-28-09, 12:07 PM
Great work on Nerve Kraken, I think I actually prefer him without the paint. Your illustrations are really great and thanks for the materials. :)
02-28-09, 02:59 PM
Hard to choose, so many great contenders in this contest, but for me, your entry is in the top 2.
02-28-09, 04:56 PM
Simply the best :tu:
02-28-09, 06:47 PM
This one indeed is one of the best sculpts not just for the contest entries... I really enjoy watching this from the very beginning to the fully fleshed out piece! :tu: :tu:

03-02-09, 08:05 AM
Thanks everyone and good luck to the other top 10 entrees. Lots of hard work from everyone during those 8 weeks.
I think I've just about chewed the end off my wacom pen.... :)
I know what you feel. I'm refreshing this site every minute
03-02-09, 05:28 PM
Hmm. strange! I do not suppose that you will not be among the winners!
yours, and another work, in my opinion should have been there 100%. and proved that it is not.
03-02-09, 05:36 PM
Your entry displayed the best polish and talent, in my opinion. You deserved first. I think we've all been robbed. Now we won't recieve a kick-ass skin and tattoo tutorial.
You still deserve all respect and appreciation for submitting an entry that will inspire others (like myself) to work harder and strive for a result that's truly heroic.
No matter what the official result say, this entry reigns supreme. Please render him in VRay or Mental Ray. Then we'll see what the community has to say for themselves.
03-02-09, 05:39 PM
I thought you had first for sure! crazy! on the shelf with me! he, he, Great work!!
03-02-09, 06:17 PM
Hey Kraken, your sculpt is really awesome and the details and pose are fantastic. I think perhaps the reason you didn't hit the top of the contest is more of a texturing and rendering issue than your sculpt. Seems like your paint job was a little bit rushed and didn't exhibit the same level of polish as some of the other entries, and the lighting wasn't very dramatic compared to say Hedgehog or Overwatch. Another thing that might have hurt your chances is that the top 4 are all classic comic book superhero designs more or less. To me Nerve seems more like a figure from asian mythology than Spider-Man. These are just some honest observations, I hope I didn't offend you, I have enormous respect for your talent and skill in zbrush. Good luck in the future, I'm a fan. :)
03-02-09, 06:38 PM
Ah I love the big fella. Amazing, amazing sculpt Kraken, I hope you get him 3d printed because he deserves to exist in the real world in classic bronze. Powerful work my friend. :)
03-02-09, 08:59 PM
LeXuSMalus, thanks! But you know, that's why art and subjectivity are synonymous. :)
jarlaxle00, thanks! Yep, I did in fact rush the painting and rendering a bit at the end. I certainly placed more importance on the sculpting and then ended up only having a day or two left to paint and render. I even thought about entering him untextured so the sculpting would be easier to judge since texturing was optional. But, it's over now and I'm not going to dwell on it or speculate about it. I've got a few new contacts because of the contest. So it's all good. :tu:
skullbeast, thanks my man!
ravioli_rancher, thanks for the boost, man. Sure, I'm a little bummed, but I'm a big boy. I'll get over it. :) I'll definitely finish Nerve off in the way that he deserves. And who says there's no skin or tattoo tutorial coming?.... ;)
JP, thanks buddy! Yeah, I'd love to have him printed, but there's it's not likely because I can't afford something like that. Maybe in the future....
03-02-09, 11:02 PM
Hm...I'm kind of surprise that Nerve didn't get to be in the final 5 as he's well sculpted and with great pose. Still one of the best in my opinion. :tu::tu:
Kraken you are right, there is nothing you should dwell on. You've shown to all here that you are a master sculptor. Congrats on that. :tu::tu:
congrats on a job well done! This is the part I hate about contests: "someone" has to make a choice. imo you guys all deserved grand prize :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: ! lookin' forward to your next worx!
03-04-09, 09:17 AM
imo you guys all deserved grand prize :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: ! lookin' forward to your next worx! That's what I meant. :D Easy to get hypervigilant about great work, and inadvertantly diminish the astounding quality all the finalists produced. Nerve is amazing. As is Dr. Root, and Overwatch, and on and on and on . . .
The dignity and professional attitude on display here is also remarkable. So many things to aspire to. :tu:
And who says there's no skin or tattoo tutorial coming?.... ;) Awesome. Everybody still wins.
03-12-09, 12:42 PM
Amazing job on applying that tattoo! Some of the best sculpting in the contest was in this thread. :tu:
03-24-09, 03:02 AM
Probably the sickest sculpting in the whole contest! It was a pleasure to watch this guy come together :tu:
05-21-09, 05:34 AM
Been a bit busy lately, but I had some time to try to do a little bit better rendering of Nerve. Still working on the background a bit. I didn't want anything too elaborate, so I just mocked up a background in Photoshop. I'm aiming to finish this up tonight so any crits to help me along would be appreciated.
Rendered in ZBrush in several passes and comped in PS.
05-21-09, 06:29 AM
Everything looks very nice.
Small crits, I hope they can help:
- the skull on the weapon lacks the details the other parts have, same thing for the blades, they are too clean and I`d like to see them sharper and more menacing
-the position of the arms; it looks like there`s not enough tension or as they are grabbing the wrong weapon; they would be okay for an axe or if he would look in another direction, where the weapon will strike.
05-21-09, 06:40 AM
That's more like it Kraken! It looks like you're finally bringing out the unexploited potential. Is there a prize for the best post-comp-render?
One critinque I could offer is that the blades on the front look a bit incongruent, something in the color, maybe a darker tone would be better, or maybe a different hue, more bronze-like, I can't pinpoint exactly, I think you can find something that works better there though. Well done on re-rendering this though, by the way, I love that background.

looking really good, love the choice of colors and the gradiant, great texture as well. the base seems out of place with the background some what. but i think i see whare your going. this is going to be cool.
I like it very much!

Thanks for the crits everyone, I took them to heart and tried to improve what I could before finishing this tonight.
Here's the final version. I strengthened the colors a bit more and added a little more interest to the background. I think the addition of the darker green to the background added a lot more depth to the piece.
Certainly there's plenty more areas that could be improved, but it's time to put Nerve to bed....... for now. :)

That is simply beautiful. No art is ever done. But this one can definitely sleep for a bit.

Frick'n kick ass. nice work, will you be down at the Gnomon Gallery opening?
05-21-09, 08:15 PM
I wish I could go, but I'm sorry to say that work responsibilities are keeping me from attending. But Nerve should be present for the festivities. :)

Marciani, I must confess that the final image color scheme was definitely inspired from Boris and Brom. :D
Here's a detail shot...

hey Kraken , i just wanted to ask, which are the basic tools that you used while sculpting ? and do u use alphas while sculpting ?!
07-14-09, 11:36 AM
In the beginning of a sculpt, I use the clay tubes, standard, move and smooth brushes. I do use some alphas for skin details, creating sharp creases, or things like armor details.

Thanks a lot Kraken, i m going to post a thread on a character i m going to start working on and would need a lot of help from you :D

whateverhappens, I'll check out your new character as soon as I can. :)
I finally got my 3D print back from the show. I love it! I thought it would be a bit cleaner looking, but overall Offload did a very good job with it. Here's some pics I took right out of the box. But I want to get some better quality pics of it soon for my website gallery.

nice - the print's looking pretty sweet!
08-04-09, 08:05 AM
Great! Why is it not on the frontpage yet? Especially with the print now.
Edit: Oh I see, thats a contest entry..
08-04-09, 08:38 AM
Wow. I dig the old look it has. Like some old statue. Really cool. You must be so pleased with this.

Hey Chris, the print looks fantastic! The style of the print really suits your work. Awesome :tu:
The print is great, I've seen it in real, it looked even better than on the photos :)
08-06-09, 02:40 AM
Wow, looks fantastic, and you know what, it seems to me that it;s showing the tension in the sculpt better than with the 3d render. But maybe is because of the different views.
08-06-09, 06:35 AM
Your print looks fantastic! Congrats! Is it heavy or does it look just like it is?
08-06-09, 08:27 AM
Yep, I'm pretty happy with it overall. I kinda wish there was a bit more detail in it, mainly in the face. But then again, the texture that the printing process left looks great with the painting they did which added a nice rough quality to it that give it a nice antique feel to it.
Moni, it's not heavy at all, though it looks a bit like cast iron.
maxinkuk, could be that the lack of extreme detail is making you focus more on the form itself. That's why I really like rough sculpts, because that's where you really can notice the flow and feeling of the form without being distracted be details.

VERY Jealous!!! :)
But you deserve it! this was one of my favourite in the contest. :tu:
