Ok. Finally started putting some apparel on this guy. Made the sandals and straps for him. The straps were mesh extracted and cleaned up (longer process than I thought), the soles were made from the base mesh polys from the bottom of the foot, flattened then used the morph difference method to give it thickness.

10 out of 10! Bravo!
One question, what's the morph difference method?

this is so good, i think you've got a winner here. well done, love the forms fo the leg and feet, really well done.

edit- i also wanted to say that i think that you used the direction of your strokes over the leg muscles very well it gives them great tension and the feet are lovely and so familer.:D

KrakenCMT
01-25-09, 07:37 PM
maxinkuk, I think it could be called something else. I just got used to calling it that. But anyway, basically I hid all the polys except for the ones at the bottom of the foot and deleted the hidden polys. Then I cleaned up the vertices a bit and flattened the polys. Then I went to the morph target tab and stored a new morph target. In the deformation tab I offset the polys a little then went back to the morph target tab then hit the "difference mesh" button. That creates a new mesh in the tool tab with the thickness of the offset I added.

Does that make any sense? It's pretty much the same technique that Meats Meier's uses for his wire method.

Appreciate the comments everyone!

Starting to chip away more on the wardrobe. Here's the leg armor. Next on the list is the belt and sash.

For the leg armor, I used projection master to apply a custom alpha of the whole design onto a rectangular cube, except for the dragon head which was added separately. I then merged the two meshes then used the deformation functions to bend it into shape.

jp_smith, I've been putting together several matcaps I've been working on even before the contest. Once the contest is over, I'll have more time to finish them up and release them to ZBC as a set. :) I'll put them in the repository when finished.

Here's the sash pretty much done for now. I'm not totally satisfied with it but I'll probably come back to it later and refine it more if time is available.

I did checked the polycount and I'm up to 26 million when adding all subtools together. Zbrush is a beast! :)

Still have some armbands and a necklace and possibly a ribbon for the spear to do and that will be about it for the subtools.

This is an amazing sculpt, I would love to know how you get such beautiful lines. Very impressive and very nice composition.

Only crit would be is that his hair line seems to be letting down the rest of the sculpt. Everything looks so beautiful and crisp, the hair line seems to be a little neglected.

This is simply amazing though. The more I see the better it gets. You are a very strong entry in this competition.

Harmonic, I totally agree which is why I resculpted the bracers. I also made them a bit smaller because I wanted more of the forearm to show.

jp_smith, I see what you mean. I'm still thinking about your suggestion. If I do it, I might take one bracer off and replace the design with some sort of tattoo. But I'm still not sure yet.

Finished the skin detailing for now. With the little time we have left, I'll need to start polypainting the model. But first I need to revisit the sash and try to clean it up a little more.

Here I put flesh color on him just to get an idea of color direction. He's a bit too flesh colored, but I'll probably add more brown/blue/grey hues to it.

Thanks everyone!

Well, the power went out during a windstorm Wednesday night right as I sat down to start working on my dude, but didn't come back on until Thursday morning. That threw my schedule off for finishing a bit. I was hoping to post the tattoo update today, but now I'm still fixing some problem areas with that. I was up extremely late last night and I'll probably be working down to the wire now, but I should still be able to post on time providing no more technical problems arise.

So on that note, good luck to everyone! It's been immensely fun doing this contest and seeing all the great talent in the community! I'll post my final later on tonight.

You still deserve all respect and appreciation for submitting an entry that will inspire others (like myself) to work harder and strive for a result that's truly heroic.

No matter what the official result say, this entry reigns supreme. Please render him in VRay or Mental Ray. Then we'll see what the community has to say for themselves.

Undiminished brilliance.

Hey Kraken, your sculpt is really awesome and the details and pose are fantastic. I think perhaps the reason you didn't hit the top of the contest is more of a texturing and rendering issue than your sculpt. Seems like your paint job was a little bit rushed and didn't exhibit the same level of polish as some of the other entries, and the lighting wasn't very dramatic compared to say Hedgehog or Overwatch. Another thing that might have hurt your chances is that the top 4 are all classic comic book superhero designs more or less. To me Nerve seems more like a figure from asian mythology than Spider-Man. These are just some honest observations, I hope I didn't offend you, I have enormous respect for your talent and skill in zbrush. Good luck in the future, I'm a fan. :)

Ah I love the big fella. Amazing, amazing sculpt Kraken, I hope you get him 3d printed because he deserves to exist in the real world in classic bronze. Powerful work my friend. :)

LeXuSMalus, thanks! But you know, that's why art and subjectivity are synonymous. :)

jarlaxle00, thanks! Yep, I did in fact rush the painting and rendering a bit at the end. I certainly placed more importance on the sculpting and then ended up only having a day or two left to paint and render. I even thought about entering him untextured so the sculpting would be easier to judge since texturing was optional. But, it's over now and I'm not going to dwell on it or speculate about it. I've got a few new contacts because of the contest. So it's all good. :tu:

skullbeast, thanks my man!

ravioli_rancher, thanks for the boost, man. Sure, I'm a little bummed, but I'm a big boy. I'll get over it. :) I'll definitely finish Nerve off in the way that he deserves. And who says there's no skin or tattoo tutorial coming?.... ;)

JP, thanks buddy! Yeah, I'd love to have him printed, but there's it's not likely because I can't afford something like that. Maybe in the future....

Hm...I'm kind of surprise that Nerve didn't get to be in the final 5 as he's well sculpted and with great pose. Still one of the best in my opinion. :tu::tu:

Kraken you are right, there is nothing you should dwell on. You've shown to all here that you are a master sculptor. Congrats on that. :tu::tu:

congrats on a job well done! This is the part I hate about contests: "someone" has to make a choice. imo you guys all deserved grand prize :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: ! lookin' forward to your next worx!

imo you guys all deserved grand prize :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: ! lookin' forward to your next worx! That's what I meant. :D Easy to get hypervigilant about great work, and inadvertantly diminish the astounding quality all the finalists produced. Nerve is amazing. As is Dr. Root, and Overwatch, and on and on and on . . .

The dignity and professional attitude on display here is also remarkable. So many things to aspire to. :tu:

And who says there's no skin or tattoo tutorial coming?.... ;) Awesome. Everybody still wins.

Thanks everyone!

Been a bit busy lately, but I had some time to try to do a little bit better rendering of Nerve. Still working on the background a bit. I didn't want anything too elaborate, so I just mocked up a background in Photoshop. I'm aiming to finish this up tonight so any crits to help me along would be appreciated.

Rendered in ZBrush in several passes and comped in PS.

Everything looks very nice.

Small crits, I hope they can help:
- the skull on the weapon lacks the details the other parts have, same thing for the blades, they are too clean and I`d like to see them sharper and more menacing
-the position of the arms; it looks like there`s not enough tension or as they are grabbing the wrong weapon; they would be okay for an axe or if he would look in another direction, where the weapon will strike.

That's more like it Kraken! It looks like you're finally bringing out the unexploited potential. Is there a prize for the best post-comp-render?
One critinque I could offer is that the blades on the front look a bit incongruent, something in the color, maybe a darker tone would be better, or maybe a different hue, more bronze-like, I can't pinpoint exactly, I think you can find something that works better there though. Well done on re-rendering this though, by the way, I love that background.

looking really good, love the choice of colors and the gradiant, great texture as well. the base seems out of place with the background some what. but i think i see whare your going. this is going to be cool.

Thanks for the crits everyone, I took them to heart and tried to improve what I could before finishing this tonight.

Here's the final version. I strengthened the colors a bit more and added a little more interest to the background. I think the addition of the darker green to the background added a lot more depth to the piece.

Certainly there's plenty more areas that could be improved, but it's time to put Nerve to bed....... for now. :)

hey Kraken , i just wanted to ask, which are the basic tools that you used while sculpting ? and do u use alphas while sculpting ?!

KrakenCMT
07-14-09, 11:36 AM
Hey whateverhappens,
In the beginning of a sculpt, I use the clay tubes, standard, move and smooth brushes. I do use some alphas for skin details, creating sharp creases, or things like armor details.

whateverhappens, I'll check out your new character as soon as I can. :)

I finally got my 3D print back from the show. I love it! I thought it would be a bit cleaner looking, but overall Offload did a very good job with it. Here's some pics I took right out of the box. But I want to get some better quality pics of it soon for my website gallery.

Wow, looks fantastic, and you know what, it seems to me that it;s showing the tension in the sculpt better than with the 3d render. But maybe is because of the different views.

Your print looks fantastic! Congrats! Is it heavy or does it look just like it is?

KrakenCMT
08-06-09, 08:27 AM
Yep, I'm pretty happy with it overall. I kinda wish there was a bit more detail in it, mainly in the face. But then again, the texture that the printing process left looks great with the painting they did which added a nice rough quality to it that give it a nice antique feel to it.

Moni, it's not heavy at all, though it looks a bit like cast iron.

maxinkuk, could be that the lack of extreme detail is making you focus more on the form itself. That's why I really like rough sculpts, because that's where you really can notice the flow and feeling of the form without being distracted be details.
