On December 20th, 2008, in the middle of a busy intersection in the mysterious, ancient city of Zumalopan Pox, a catastrophic collision involving a sumo wrestler with a runny nose, a farm truck with a squeaky wheel, a barrel of toxic waste, a rampaging circus elephant, a flying saucer, a brilliant, but dirty old woman smuggling a beaker full of genetic material stolen from a frozen witchdoctor, a nuclear explosion, and cosmic rays, a new breed of super hero is born -- a Grouchy Golem Grown of Goobers -- Glum! He rises from the goopy aftermath of the nasty explosion, with a lot of snott, but little to say. Bashful of his abominable appearence, he shambles through the city, punching evil-doers, and those who stop to stare or point. Eventually, he learns to harness the powers of his nuclear cosmic voodoo mucus membranes to shapeshift into even more abominable lumps. Those who come into contact with him recieve a runny nose which lasts for days. Also, much to his disappointment, he believes he's probably immortal, too.

Update: December 21, 2008

Much to his own relief, Glum has been vanquished.

His executioner was the notorious Phiz Ed, a high school gym instructor who demanded Glum pay him fifteen situps. When Glum refused, Phiz Ed beat him to death with two aluminum bats coated with Ben-Gay and disinfectant.

PhizEd01.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27118260%27,%27PhizEd01.jpg%27,1,0%29)

Clearly then, Phiz Ed specializes in torture and combat with sporting equipment, has inexhaustible stamina, and compulsively disinfects everything. Even soap.

He's just my kind of guy. The accident that produced it sounds horrific, I bet his insurance had expired the day before.
Look forward to see him strutting his snot.

What a disgustingly delightful character!

Makes me want to stock up on Mucinex and antihistamines...
He should make a drippingly fine Booger boy. Very imaginative and funny!

What a horrific and hilarious end to a thoroughly icky guy. Glum didn't necessarily deserve his end, but he certainly needed it...

LOL at Phiz Ed~ The facial expression makes it for me!
Congratulations on your wonderful way of updating your character.
Go Phiz Ed!

So glum's gone now it's Phiz Ed turn instead. Frankly I like the Glum's concept better but I'm certain you can make Phiz Ed one great character. Will check on this thread often as you have a very creative way to change the character. :)

Thanks everyone for the motivation.

Here I post this crude evidence of effort:

RepugnantRumble01.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27119046%27,%27RepugnantRumble01.jpg%27,1,0%29)

punching polycubes and unified skinned zspheres until they starts to vaguely resemble my even cruder sketches, or something even more vague which I can possibly submit for the contest theme.

Back to pretending to be productive. :td:

Although beleived crushed by the santizing powers of Mr. Phiz Ed, Glum uses his nuclear alien voodoo powers to reincarnate himself from within Phiz's sinus cavity. In a primitive, more gelatinous form, he explodes forth from a sneeze, ready to drain his foe of all mucus.

GlumFront1229.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27119392%27,%27GlumFront1229.jpg%27,1,0%29)

Still messing with the anatomy. Obviously, since Glum is composed of mystical mucus of from exploded sumo wrestler, his musculature won't be so obvious. Still it helps me to know how the snott will fall as he's slowly glued together.

The Glum is coming along really nicely... Love :tu: the rakes you put on him...rally neat.

ravioli_rancher

Glum made use of his monstrous alien intelligence to smelt his own weapon -- the diabolical Wrench of Crusty Injustice!

MonkeyWrenchProcess01.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27120659%27,%27MonkeyWrenchProcess01.jpg%27,1,0%29)

As shown here, Glum started by making a quick grayscale schematic, then turned it into an alpha using the MRGB grab tool, then pressed the Make3D button, then retopologized, then attacked it mercilessly with various alphas using the standard brush and Projection Master.

Glum still wants to put skulls on it somewhere.

Anyway, thanks, SolidSnakexxx for your post. I'll try to be more active in this project, and post more frequently than once a week.

Glum, being a gargantuan goober, has little to no motivation to compete in art and crafts contests. However, realizing he stinks, and still looks like garbage, he spent the week continuing his experiments in the ardous transformation from 2d scribble to 3d sculpture:

GlumProgress011209.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27122043%27,%27GlumProgress011209.jpg%27,1,0%29)

Clearly, he still has no idea what he's doing, and anything that might be less than shabby is purely accidental, spastic, or supernatural. Although, he thinks it's neat that the Make3D button can be used to rought out a hand, as well as a corroded monkey wrench.

During his dabblings with dark doohickeys, he also uncovered that a magic mucus man who prefers to be known as Pico the Booger Bandito, lives inside his head and jumps out periodically to steal snott from the forces of evil:

GlumAndPico01.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27122044%27,%27GlumAndPico01.jpg%27,1,0%29)

Which is bad news, as that means he know needs to try and model a sombero wearing snottball, too. If only Phiz Ed would kill him again. :( :td:

Petekasim,

Thank you for your post. I think, though, after this post, its clear I'm more of a meandering goober.

pitchepuck,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm struggling with the transition from simple sketch to detailed sculpture, so knowing that at least one person wants to see more is great incentive to continue on. Hopefully it will all stop sucking soon. :D

ISK-86, maxinuk, wethand, leandroloaiza, and threetails,

Thanks for your kindwords. Hopefully, after this contest in done, we can all have a Make3D Superhero button, that turns quick scribbles into 3D prints at Offload Studios. :D

Will Glum survive another bout of retopology? Will Pico stick to his sombero? Will skulls be attached to that big hole at the bottom of the Wrench of Crusty Justicec? Find out next week, as we return with another episode of GLUM.

Glum spent the week bashing his keyboard in ritual concentration. Very few productive thoughts surfaced.

GlumProgress012009.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27123356%27,%27GlumProgress012009.jpg%27,1,0%29)

But, he managed to attach crude approximations of himself in low poly form.

Then he took pictures of jelly, and experimented with matcap materials.

Then he bashed the keyboard in self-disgust.

The worst is yet to come. Hopefully for Glum, he starts applying himself a bit more. He's way behind everyone else in his Superhero class. :td: At his current pace, He'll be a thirty year old goober by the time he graduates.

Despite himself, he vowes to work more diligently each day. Even if it means another week of booger-brained retopo sessions.

SolidSnakexxx, JP_Smith,

Thanks. You two are amazing. I envy your skills and work ethic.

SolidSnakexxx
01-20-09, 12:30 AM
ravioli_rancher, that's way cool man...you even took a snapshot and made the MatCap out of it. Very neat idea :tu: By the way, wht kind of material is the brown one, also brown jelly?

ravioli_rancher
01-20-09, 12:59 AM
SolidSnakexxx,

 Hmmm, the brown stuff does look conspicous. But, yes, its only jelly.

I hope. :(

Thanks for your continuing encouragement. :D

Glum's initial adventure in the terrifying dimension of Transpose-Metropolis:

Long, unproductive week. Much confusion and frustration. :td:

However, to shoo off permanent banisment from the Hall of ZBrush Heroes one more week, Glum used his super fabrication ability to model the beginnings of a sombrero, a Sumo Belt (known as a mawashi according to the nefarious super geniuses powering the internet), and a pitiful looking stunt-double for Pico.

GlumProgress13009.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27125427%27,%27GlumProgress13009.jpg%27,1,0%29)

Much shame and disgust is oozing from Glum's mucus canals. He returns to his crusty cave of concentration to regroup and regenerate. Hopefully by Monday, he'll have something worthwhile to upload.

Captain Sensible, Harmonic, SolidSnakexxx,

Thank you for the encouragement, in spite of my shuffling Glum along from one week to the next. He will get finished, in defiance of his protests.

In accordance with his superhuman melancholy, Glum has the ability not to do anything but mope for days at a time. Thus, his progress remains slow. Fortunately, Pico has the ability to scream inside his skull, "HURRY UP JACKASS, YOU ONLY HAVE SIX DAYS LEFT."

Hopefully Glum will stop being a loaf, and make some real progress, just once.

In the mean time, he managed to throw together a stand -- a sumo ring, or dohyo, consisting of glum's origin impact crater, steel girders, and mystery cannisters, where Glum likes to keep things like the bone dust of all his vanquished foes. The crater itself, when combined with Glum's Nuclear Voodoo chanting, becomes a time space portal, or some such nonsense.

Glum also tattooed himself with alphas. As usual, in a fit of spite, he wen't too far, and screwed everything up. He'll need to be more cooperative for the deadline. :td:

Final Entry:

After repeated fist and wrench fights with his computer, Glum, much to his disgust, makes the deadline. He hasn't slept in quite a white, so, please bear with his clumsy typing:

First, a very old Transpose Movie, but no time to make another:

Turntable, just finished today. The animal that's about to eat Glum is a Cross Dimensional Cootie, for the aspiring cryptozoologists on the forum:

Glum hasn't slept in about 58 hours. He's hallucinating, and miserable. But, despite his best efforts to sabotage everything, he hit the deadline. :td:

Many thanks to everyone who posted and motivated Glum to not just sit in a corner and blow goobers at bugs. :tu:
