View Full Version : Action Hero - Nitrate (villain -nudity)

Entrant - Chris Curtis
Background
While working in a chemical lab, Aqua Fortis became the victim of an unfortunate chemical accident. It mutated her and led to her unintentionally harming her friends and family. Burning and scalding them. Including her own mother. She fled to the city an emotional wreck where more unfortunate encounters with the public left them with their skin burnt off. This attracted the attention of the evil Dr [insert wickedly villainous name here mwah-ha-ha], who took her in and helped her to control her new found 'powers' and to use them at her own will. Unable to live a normal life and an outcast from society, Aqua became part of the evil Doctor's villainous gang and adopted the name Nitrate.
Powers
Nitrate has the ability to secrete Nitric Acid from glands in her skin, much the same as a poisonous frog secretes poison. In close contact her victim's skin will be severely burnt by the red hot acid. She will grapple and wrap herself around them to gain contact. She also carries a gun loaded with 'acidic-bullets' for long distance harm.
Nitrate_Concept_Sketch.jpg
Need a rough concept sketch, but this sounds GREAT. Creepy and icky, but great!
Costuming should be a blast, since you can look to those poisonous frogs and such for color and pattern ideas.
Is Nitrate's skin burned from the accident, to where she has to wear a mask? The poisonous amphibians all have a "shiny-slick" skin, I believe, but am not sure. Skin texture may be a consideration...
I had intended my character to be a villain, but she ended up another stinkin' do-gooder...I wasn't able to come up with good nastiness stealing time. But OOooooooeeeewwwww! Being grappled by some chick oozing nitric acid...Now THAT is just pure wicked...
Clothing her is going to be a challenge, since high vitrious ceramics or lab glass are about the only things not affected by Nitric acid...Some powerful stuff...Some sort of special flexible vitreous china fiber clothing, one might surmise...
Definitely looking forward to seeing this gal develop!

I'll be working on a concept sketch this weekend so watch this space. Just wanted to get my idea in first.
Yes all those things are a consideration. I think the clothing will be some sort of hybrid that works as normal fabric. Most superheroes get away with that! (Fantastic Four for instance) One thing's for sure she won't be wearing much as it's her skin that's the weapon.
Not sure about the skin itself yet. I made a toad recently so I may rule out the patterns. I believe Nitric Acid is created via cooling of gas so the accident could have been inhalation. Some scars could be cool though.
At the moment I'm thinking this character just needs to be very dark ;)
She sounds wonderfully twisted and tortured, similar to Rogue of the X-men...Not much in the way of romance available when your touch is toxic...
Barely clothed is ALWAYS a good attention getter.
I can't help but wonder if she takes oatmeal baths to sooth her skin at the end of the day...lol!

I had a maths teacher at college that was like that. But I'm sure you'll make her somehow more handsome, still, just as nasty. I look forward to the visual.

Hey, Chris, this is a great concept! I like the idea for a handgun, but maybe it should somehow harness her excretion power so that it never runs out of ammo? Just a thought.

Cool concept,so maybe she will carry a sniper rifle?
I love snipers,so close to the target yet so far away...

That's an awesome idea. I never considered that. Maybe a tube that feeds into the gun or something :)

keep it up !
I saw this picture of a girl emmitting something from pores on her costume, might be worth looing into as one design idea

The first time I visited the thread, she didn't have the sketch yet but with the sketch I can see an evil vixen spitting/shooting her poisons out to destroy the world. :tu:

Thanks. The concept isn't that great though. I'll definitely change the hair and the costume needs some refinement. Not too sure on the sunglasses. Might swap those for some badass make up. Working on the basemesh as the moment so hopefully I can get that done and start some sculpting!
Cool concept, might I suggest for close quarters fighting she can use some fire breathing skills? Perhaps a pose where she's doing a one handed cartwheel and spitting out flames!?
Good luck on your entry!

I think the design needs work, but if you're anything like me you'll be playing with that quite a lot once you get into ZBrush. One thing I will say about sunglasses, is be careful in deploying them on a character because they take away the eyes, "the window to the soul." If you do that, you need to make sure that everything else about her conveys the personality that they steal. I reckon you should look at snow-boarding, and other forms of protective goggles as she will certainly need them if she's gonna be spraying acid all over the place.
Captain Sensible

Definitely gonna focus more on the look in ZBrush. The sketch was pretty quick just to show something. I've gathered lots of images as reference for various parts. Most of her look is still in my head. Just need to get it out! She certainly doesn't look mean enough in the sketch.
The sunglasses I'm gonna do away with. I originally wanted to make them clear yellow but thought that would be hard in a ZBrush render. Her skin has a defence against the acid so I guess her eyes will too.
Basemesh is almost done, but I need to simplify it or I may lose points with the judges. It's easier to build up form in ZBrush anyway.
My plan is to model a head and body to import, also some simple boots and gloves. The rest of the clothing will be constructed with retopo tools. I'm trying to do as much as possible in ZBrush although the gun will be hard edged in Maya and detailed in ZBrush.
Christmas in a couple of days. I doubt I'll get much done over that period but hope to start posting my WIP soon after.
Thanks for all the comments so far guys! :)

Too bad you are ditching the Sun glasses idea. I think it would fit her quite well. But again, does anyone know how to render transparency with the turn table. If it supports this feature, would be really cool.
Looking forward to your sculpt.

Thanks. Well I say 'rough', but it needs a lot of refinement. This is a first for me in doing a realistic female sculpt so it's a real learning process for me. Which is a good thing though. Also there are few other female entries that are looking damn good so I have my work cut out in keeping up with them.

a few minor things here, the front pornch or pouch is missing, at the moment u have quite a masculine ribcage that touches the bottom of the elbow when it should stop a little after the breasts and be slightly pointyer for a girl. i would show a little more sternum (the front chest bone plate) and if you arms are that far apart, the sholder blades should be very close to touching and the fat of the back should begin to roll. ummmm the face looks a bit gaunt and drawn, but that is soully due to the lines around the eye, they should be visible only from the side, as a virticle line under the eye, fatten the cheek slightly and stop her smiling, maybe pushing the forhead up a touch will do this too. great knees (im a big fan of knees, not enough people do them well here) great proportions and great hips. :D hope u dont mind the crit but someone has to beat zack petrok hahaha happy zbrushing! henrysouth: Thanks for the crits man! Just what I'm looking for. This is my first real attempt at proper female anatomy so it's a learning experience for me. I still need to work on the ribcage, shoulders, face, well everything really!
wethand: Thanks. She's a villain so she needs to look bad and she definitely needs to look dangerous!
leandroloaiza: Thanks. Yes I still have much to do but it's beginning to take shape.
I think I have a good idea about conveying the Nitric Acid secretion in the sculpt by making large skin pores along her arms and legs.

Didn't get too much done today. A little more body and face work. Also started shaping the hair. I need to create some flow to the hair though as it's just a bit random and chaotic at the moment. I also need to do some work on the boots and gloves and then I can start stepping up in levels.

Hey Captain Sensible, good work so far. Sculpting women is a very difficult balance, if you add to much definition then they look masculine, not enough and they look like formless blobs. So far it look like you are treading that fine line well, she definitely looks feminine.

I think your on track to making a nice figure. I will say her neck looks a little intense compared to how smooth the rest of her is, perhaps relax her muscles there a lil bit.

01-08-09, 06:29 AM
Hey, thanks for the comments guys. Glad I'm heading in the right direction with this. Subtlety is definitely the key and it's very difficult to keep that without losing it altogether. I will take a look at that neck plus there's a few other things I've spotted too :)

01-08-09, 01:59 PM
I've done some work on the hair. I have a little flow going on it now but needs a lot more detail. Also started the boots. I need to stop the crisscross pattern and define the folds and creases better but I thought it was a good start. I'm gonna add buckles and other stuff to them to make them more interesting. When I'm happy with the body I can start adding clothing from either a mesh extract or a retopo mesh. All comments and crits welcome!:D

Very good work here, I like the way it's a young female without being a stereotypically super sexy girl. Gives her some personality. One thing, folds on cloth and boots take on more meaning whit the pose, some of those folds will still be fine but after posing you may find that some other need changing so if I was you I wouldn't use a lot of my time to detail elements that may change. I also found that posing damaged many of the details of my character that will have to be sculpted back. I think that it's better to plan ahead clearly what part of the modeling and sculpting is better done before posing and what after posing.
Overall proportions are great!
The hair looks very good...
Anxious to see your progress :tu:

Looking good!, take a look at her upper arms.
Captain Sensible
01-09-09, 09:19 AM
maxinkuk: Cheers man. Again. I have been thinking about the kind of pose I want and maybe I should look at doing it soon. I need to get some asymmetry into the model and at the moment everything is symmetrical, even the creases. I need to think about her clothing before I pose so I should make that a priority. I took a good look at my concept sketch and decided it looked like a supermodel and it didn't work as a villain so I thought about what would make her look more mean, and not being super sexy was one thing.
ISK-86: Thank you. I'm slowly getting there.
Hamilcar: Thanks. I see what you mean. They are a little flat and unformed. I admit I have neglected them. I have been thinking about the pose and each arm will have different muscle tension so I may concentrate more on their form when I've posed her.
roborama
01-09-09, 09:59 AM
that's really coming along! lots of good stuff emerging! if i could give you some feedback i would be the arms in general. Since you have created a really well built and natural looking woman, her arms need to be a little fuller as well. her forearms in particular. Her hands feel a little small to me but this could be the angle. I always place my open hand next to my own head ,and that size relation becomes really clear. it's no different for women. I do really like how you've nailed that muscle that flows from the arm into the breast. That's not easy and you did a great job. can't wait to see more!
Captain Sensible
01-10-09, 04:25 AM
roborama: Thanks. Certainly a few things to consider. My next step I think may be the clothing so after that I can pose. I might have to finally tackle that transpose vid! Then I can consider the arms, hands, hair and boots. Hope to get a good chunk done this weekend! :D

Thanks guys. Your encouragement is invaluable!
A small update. I've now added some basic clothing but needs shaping into something better. A bit buggy doing the retopo and I couldn't create a mesh with thickness. So I had to do the old store a morph target, deformations>inflate and create a difference mesh trick.
I spent some time today trying out TransPose Master and the make movie option. I've found TransPose Master crashes when I try to go back after posing which really doesn't help. So if I can't get it to work I might have to look at other options for posing which is a pain cos I've got subtools. Also how do I convert a .ZMV movie file into something else so I can upload to YouTube?

Hey Captain,
Nitrate is looking awesome! In zbrush export your movie as a .mov file and the settings window pops up change the movie type to Mpeg-4 and you should be able to upload that to Youtube. hope that helps.
wethand
01-11-09, 03:45 AM
hi captain sensible,
to upload a movie to youtube i export it directly out of zbrush (movie --> export when you paused the recording) as a mov. you can upload the movie to youtube.
to the posing: why do you need to go back after posing? i would prefer to first finish the modeling with all parts and subtools you need. after that you can pose it and you don't need to go back anymore.
or what do you mean? go back a step while posing?
Captain Sensible
01-11-09, 03:53 AM
Cool. Thanks guys. I was using 'save as' for the movie thing and that only gives you the option to save as a .ZMV. I'll try export instead.
With the posing I meant using TransPose Master I click TposeMesh and it creates a low res. I pose the model then click Tpose>SubT and it cycles through the subtools but then ZBrush quits altogether. I've posted the issue in the questions & troubleshooting section of the forums also. Obviously I need to have it working for this contest otherwise it's gonna be painful posing each subtool.
wethand
01-11-09, 04:18 AM
AH yes, i know what you mean.
you should look after a subtool which doesn't become low poly. maybe you have something extruded on an higher subdiv level so it own lovest level is already high poly. and high poly doesn't mean 1mio polys. i think 100.000 is definetely to much.
transpose master still works, but need VERY long. zbrush still responses when it crashes, am i right?
i think this could be the reason.
hope you understand me and hope, that helps
Captain Sensible
01-11-09, 04:34 AM
I think they all become low poly. Maybe my subtools in their original form are too hi res. So when it tries to calculate the changes from posing going from transpose to subtool mode it gets confused and crashes. I just tried a small test on the demo soldier and it seemed to work ok on that so it's probably something to do with my model.
Anyway I have discovered a new twist. The mac version of ZBrush has no movie export option! Just checked my ZBrush book and the button should be located next to the Play Movie button. Instead on the mac that Play Movie button is longer and takes up the space of two buttons. So it would seem Pixologic have forgotten to include it in the mac version! What's worse is that it's a mandatory element of this contest to have a transpose movie. Fortunately I think the mac has other apps that can capture screen activity for free.
wethand
01-11-09, 04:46 AM
oh... didn't know that! good to know... but bad for you :(
Captain Sensible
01-11-09, 10:39 AM
I've been playing around with things a bit today. I've found that by merging the gloves and the body together as one subtool it seems to stop the TransPose Master crash problem for now. The movie issue I think I can resolve by recording the session and then playing the .ZMV file while using the Snapz Pro demo to record the screen. Sigh!
Today's updates. I've worked a little on the costume. I need to add more details to it though as it just looks too plain. I've also made the gun holster and boot buckles but need to detail them too. The gun itself will be last I think. For her actual powers of secreting acid I was thinking of creating a kind of blistered skin texture on the inside of her arms and legs with big pores. It will help to make her look a bit nastier and illustrate exactly what she does at the same time.

Apologies for the lack of updates over the last few days guys. I managed to get ill again. I did a bit last night. Started on the transpose video too. I've recorded about ten minutes of frames so far. Unfortunately I've not found any software that works to record the screen so I can save it as a proper movie yet. I tried SnapzPro demo but the ZBrush video won't play in the background while Snapz is running so that one's out. I found another one called Copernicus that I think I've used before but if it requires ZBrush to run in the background then it ain't gonna work. I have to say I think this is grossly unfair to have a mandatory requirement in this contest that mac users cannot meet cos there's a bit missing in the software. I've a good mind to upload 3gb of .ZMV files in my final post and let them pick the bones out of it. But I'll persist for now
spimmy: Thank you. Once I've got the pose sorted I'll sculpt the hell out of those boots and make them look much better.
gordon-v: Thanks. Yes it's the good old Snakehook brush. I was glad it made it as a 3D brush. Very useful, even as a forceful move brush. I intend to use it for much finer strands of hair too.

Hey there, lovely work with the model :tu:
There's something about that pose though that seems awkward. I've been scratching my chin over this and I can't seem to put my finger on it, I'm pretty tired though so who knows...
If I had to guess, I'd say the raised hand should also correlate with a raised shoulder, right now you have it the other way around. Another possible problem could be the fact that both her right arm and leg are forwards, wheras people usually alternate to maintain balance.
None of this is set in stone, it's just a couple of general rules I learned when I was studying animation. I try to go by "feeling" rather than hard and fast rules, and as it stands something feels a tad uncomfortable about her position
Hope this helps somewhat... experimentation is key I guess. I usually try acting out the pose and getting someone to photograph me, making sure what I'm doing doesn't feel forced or unnatural. From there I can refine and push stuff further to add drama, but having that starting point helps a lot
Best of luck :tu:
Certainly; this is great improvement.:tu:
Captain Sensible
01-17-09, 03:45 AM
petekasim: Yes the pose is very awkward and I'm far from happy with it. I think what is making it look wrong is most definitely the arms and shoulders. At the moment the shoulders aren't doing anything. A simple switch of the arms to make them alternate could fix a lot. I have spent time jumping about in front of my mirror but I guess I need to do some more haha! Thanks for you help. It's good to get some other people's views on this.

goldo_O: Thanks. Not an acidic bullet but the acid itself. Well reminded about the contact with the base! I was think of having her jumping over something on the streets. A bin perhaps. That leg could possibly be gaining purchase on it. More to come on the boots ;)

Nice update, Captain Sensible... The pose is set..I think the area that still needs a bit of ZLove woudl be the hair..but I think you would know that already. Other than that...this is a cool model. :tu:

SolidSnakexxx: Thank you. I'm still not happy with the hair. I'm wondering whether to change it altogether. Well, to something similar but maybe less spikes.

Thank you Moni-Poroni!
Some more updates - I've started reworking the hair. The old one was just too difficult to control. The new one is still in the early stages. Looks a bit naff 80s at the moment but with some more spikes, slightly bigger here and there and a bit of love it should look ok. What I wouldn't give for the Shave and a Haircut plugin to work in ZBrush!!!! Some more work on the boots. I started some scenery too. Needs more junk on the floor and I was thinking of actually having bricks being busted off from her knee. Feel free to throw in your comments. I can take it ;)

cool idea and its coming along nice!
I like new hair and the concept of pedestal. More junk and it will be awesom.
I whould be carefull with this pose for a final entry, as I know the character can't hang above pedestal but if I'am wrong I whould strighten her right leg. In my opinion it's maximal bow should be about 30-45 degrees. And I think the left hand should be rotated to "look" down, now it looks like it whould hold something. Whole left arm could stay backwards or more on a side... I hope my english is understandable :) and I hope this will help!
Keep up the good work! :tu:

I like the new adjusted hair style as well at the smaller res... :tu: but zoomed in it still seem a bit too spiky...But if you refine further I think the result could be perfect. But overall addition to the model's so wonderful and I liek the scene set up :)

Stellios: Thanks!
bryzol: Thanks for the comments. You're right. I do need to think about how she is connected to the base. I was thinking of having more junk up the wall and bricks being broken off as she jumps through so her knee/shin will be resting on that. Hopefully that should work. The hand I have pointing upwards intentionally. It will become more apparent towards the end when I start detailing ;)
SolidSnakexxx: Cheers. I know what you mean about the hair. I need to play a bit more with it to get the right look. At the moment I'm feeling it's a bit 'Matrix' like, but that's just me, so I may look at the hair styles from that.

01-22-09, 08:02 AM
oh yeah, the hair is MUCH better now!!! and i like how you are creating the base...
just one crit maybe: it doesn't really look like she is jumping. more like she is running. the back leg should be straight if she jumpes.
but i like how she is running. maybe you can just lower the wall she is jumping over. that would look like ruins.
anyway, nice progress!

I like the new haircut, makes her more action-girl, a manageable look, that's what a hairdresser would say.
The pose works, it's easy to read, but I think that there are changes that you still need to make on her upper body. She's maybe a bit too straight and moving the spine to make her attitude a bit more relaxed could benefit the pose. Turning a bit the torso/shoulders towards her right side could also be worth trying.
I'd also consider adding a bit of muscle to the legs, she's maybe a bit skinny to get into fights as she is now.
Captain Sensible
01-22-09, 02:25 PM
wethand: Thanks! I hope to take a look at that leg when I get more stuff in there on the base.
maxinkuk: Manageable is definitely the word! As for the pose I had a good look at her. I think the problem may be that her spine seems to be curved only at the bottom and the rest of her back is straight. If you try doing that yourself it's quite difficult. The entire spine needs to curve as a whole. Certainly up to the shoulders. I'll try turning her torso into the jump more too... and the legs. In one of my last grabs it does look quite thin from that view. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated!:)
Today it took me twice as long to get home on the train so I'm a bit tired and didn't get much time for playing. I've made some more hair adjustments. Hopefully you can see kind of where it's going now. I need to change the 2 large clumps at the front as they look a bit like horns.

Hair looks allot better now, I think you could add some medium form to it though which will help. Right now you've got the big parts and small parts.
One thing on the face thats bothering me is the corner of the lips, you could push them in and soften them some for a more natural look.

Looking better Captain Sensible, it's now has some variety to the short hair style. I think hair is one of the tough elements to sculpt as it's quite unique in its own way. But so far, you've done a great job :)

Gohanf22: Thanks for the support man!
SolidSnakexxx: Thanks. The shorter hair is much easier to control. The style I had before was just unworkable. I did debate about creating some hair with Shave and a Haircut, converting to polys and importing. I would lose a lot of points with the judges but seeing some other entries (such as your own!) I don't feel I'm in with a winner anyway. Still I'm gonna persist sculpting the shorter hair for my own learning purposes and hopefully I can get it to look much better.

Lunchtime updates - I've made the gun. Just need to adjust its position slightly and her fingers. Played a little more with the hair. Also made a logo.
I hope to be on this all day today. The deadline is sneaking ever closer and I'm crapping myself as to whether I'm gonna get this finished or not! Transpose video is done. So that leaves the modeling/sculpting and then painting her for the final render and turntable. Eeek!

I decided to take a look at the facial expression but found that some of the vertices in the mouth had merged together! So I've had to fix the mesh, re-import it and reproject my details. The facial expression is OK, but I would separate her teeth so she isn't gritting them. That would be for suttle anger. I would think if she is chasing someone and jumping over a wall, she would be screaming "HUAAAA!" Unless you are trying to hide the inside of the mouth, then maybe you can keep the teeth closed.
Captain Sensible
01-27-09, 09:44 AM

Alliecat 08: Thanks for the input. It would have been good to have her screaming like a banshee and her arms flailing about all over the place. But I have to consider I am running out of time and building and sculpting a decent mouth cavity is something on it's own. Maybe if I had another month :D

01-28-09, 04:21 AM
Marsyas: Thank you. That's the good thing about ZBrush, you can build up details very quickly. The planks are all duplicates of the same object with the same UVs and then merged. So when I add a texture to it I can use it to detail all of them at the same time. Then just change each of them enough to make them look slightly different. Same with the wall, UVs are identical front and back so I can do both sides at the same time. It would be good to see ZBrush implement better UV tools in the future though so you can do all of that in one program ;)

I really love her boots and clothing. Great start on the facial expression too. Her leg that is up in the air is causing some pinching between her thigh and pelvis and her behind seems a bit flat cause of it. May I make a suggestion pull it back and down until the her boot sole is touching the wall in a half crouch or to put it or her tip toes on the ground. You could put it flat on the boards you have there. If I were to jump a wall like that and only balanced on one knee I would fall flat on my face. Other than that small crit she is great. I want those  boots:cool: and what a big cool gun she's got there love that. Also love the environmental stuff. Keep up the great work and happy zbrushing.:D

01-28-09, 02:34 PM
Seavannah: Thanks for the compliments! Good spot on the thigh. I would like to change the pose and have a few options. What you suggested sounds good. I also thought about having her lunging both arms stretched out forwards ready to grab, arms dripping with acid. What I have at the moment is a result of doing things backwards - I did the pose and then built the scenery around it. Unfortunately I'm running out of time to try other things :(
No significant updates to post today. I have done some more work and slight adjustments on the pose and remade the holster. I just have sculpting and painting left to do now, yay!!

My first impression of this sculpt seems a bit stiff. Some twisting in the hips and leaning forward would definitely give a better sense of charging through a wall. Also if maybe she wasnt hurdling through the wall but more of a shoulder charge would give a whole lot more power to this one. Also the left arm is in a weird pose. Maybe if both hands were grasping the gun that would work.
Love the face. Moni is right about the butt. Needs more cushion for the pushing!
Hey, great facial expression, really like it :tu: . The hand looks great too, I like the details on them and the posing! Great work

Moni-Poroni: Thanks! The view doesn't help but I think her butt needs to be rounder. I'll take a look at that later.
DAnconia: Haha! Yes I'm familiar with that expression :o Thanks for the suggestions! The left arm is posed like that on purpose. When I get to detailing it should become more apparent. I'm just hoping it reads well enough.
spimmy: Thank you! Actually looking at my screen grabs I didn't capture the best views of the hands. With some more creases and seams and a bit of leather detail I hope to get them looking better.

nice boots and logo! I am not sue about the pose though. She seems to be off balance a little.
The boot is so excellent. I would like to see a little more dynamics to the pose. Is it possible to oppose the hips and shoulders more?
petekasim
02-01-09, 06:44 PM
Tip top work on the details Captain! And I see you have been gurning in the mirror, too... nice job! :tu:
Keep experimenting with the pose. I think considering how dynamic her legs are, the body isn't doing enough in terms of a line of action. It's almost straight and totally upright, whereas I think it could use a dramatic arc.
This illustrates the concept beautifully:
pbanimation07-big.jpg
AVTPro could be onto something regarding the shoulders, and I reckon the pelvis could use a twist to favour the leading leg.
Just experiment and see what happens - doing some thumbnail sketches won't hurt, either
All the best to you! :)

Moni-Poroni & SirNeo Thank you!
Well I'm starting to have a few issues with this model now. Basically if I want to change the pose then I can't. It's pretty muched screwed as it is. TransPose Master crashes and comes up with errors so getting that better pose it totally out of the question now. This week was meant to be spent getting those last details sculpted in so I could paint her this weekend and then get started on materials and renders by the start of next week. That's looking highly unlikely now and I'm wondering if I'll even get her finished by the deadline.
But don't worry, I'm gonna persist with it for now but with it's current pose. And if I hit the deadline then fine and if I don't then I'm not gonna get upset about it.
maxinkuk
02-03-09, 07:51 AM
Have you thought about transposing without Transpose Master (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showpost.php?p=522348&postcount=194)? You can do that in high res by merging all subtools. Before doing that you want to delete those subtools that you won't be transposing and get rid of eventual highest subdiv levels that you don't think bring much anyway (be ruthless, you can possibly get those lost details back without too much effort).
Then save with a different name, merge, do the posing, do a group split and append back the missing subtools by cloning them from your last version.
If you plan this properly you can end up with a not too heavy mesh that your machine can take without problems and the selecting of elements works just like in subtool master because by merging you'll get one polygroup per subtool so you can hide/unhide and do all the various combinations of selections that you'd do with transpose master. And you won't get any crashing issue!!
maxinkuk
02-03-09, 08:25 AM
By the way, I also discovered that once merged you can still do recontruct subdiv and pose a low res mesh, of course you can only subdiv until the polygroup (that used to be a subtool until merging) with the lowest number of possible subdivs reaches that subdiv level. So if you want this option you have to plan this ahead of merging as well and that may mean adding subdiv levels instead of deleting them sometimes so that you end up with the same number of subdiv levels across all subtools.
Captain Sensible
02-03-09, 09:47 AM
Thanks maxinkuk.
Yes that sounds like a decent alternative. Although I do have some other weird things going on like the UVs getting scrambled in the eyes when coming out of TransPose Master mode. So my nice texture I put on there goes haywire. Also the eyes are only low res with 2 subdiv levels (74k) yet I can't divide them any more. I've tried exporting and re-importing but to no avail.
To be honest it's really doing my head in.
maxinkuk
02-03-09, 10:01 AM
That's wierd. Looks like you had issues and you better fix them. I don't know why you can't subdivide but it's just the eyes doing that you're better off appending new ones and placng them where they should be and delete the first set.
I had problems too and had to go through a half day of snagging. Exporting obj and re-import sometimes solves some of those issues. Also, check that meshes don't have their normal flipped. You do that by unckecking "double" in the tool>display palette, then if becomes clear if you have them flipped. I was having issues and I found that a lot of my meshes were flipped, so one after the other I flipped them again. The main character was flipped and as it was very heavy it wouldn't flip without causing a crash so I had to export every level as obj, flip each level and then flip level 1, subdivide, inport level2, subdivide...I think that I also decided to delete the last subdiv level altogether and just resubdivide and sculpt back what was lost.
Captain Sensible
02-04-09, 03:54 AM
Thanks again Max!
The eyes I can resolve by re-importing but it messes up my UVs (even though they are exactly the same??) and re-doing the texture on them. I may merge some of the other suspect subtools together. If I can't get this fixed soon I've decided I'm going to go on without changing the pose just so I can submit something at the end at least. I'm not in it to win anyway, just to be part of the amazing thing that's going on here. I've also decided to go back a few steps pre-posing so I can make a proper Maya character afterwards. It would look better on my reel anyway ;)
Captain Sensible
02-04-09, 02:15 PM
Update - I'm feeling a little happier now. I got a bit demotivated with this but after taking Max's advice (thanks dude!) I decided to get ruthless. I managed to find the rogue subtool causing the crashing - it was the gun holster. So I merged it with the costume (at the expense of the details but I can put those back in fairly quickly). I also deleted the eyes and put new ones in. I just need to resculpt the correct deformation and then I'm back on track. Here is the new pose I came up with. I'm liking it better than the old one. I hope you do too ;)

I would push the abs back a little bit. Also give her some volume to her butt. Her legs seems very small in mass compared to the rest of the body. Also, unless that trash can is made of steel it will not be able to support a fully grown woman's weight. Neither would that plank of wood. Maybe with some earth or concrete underneath the wood it wouldnt break.
Her left arm, the bicep and tricep area need to be corrected. That bone structure doesnt curve that way.
Maybe if her thong or belt loop were resting on top of her waist it would really sell the female hips a bit more.
The hip line and the shoulder line should pretty much go in the opposite directions. Right now they are parallel. I would bring the left leg up and the right leg down to give that very necessary and dynamic flow of lines.
Also might want to put the holster on the side of the hand that the gun is in. I dont see how someone can pull a gun out from the side of the opposite leg.
Keep going.

raguyarts & SolidSnakexxx: Thanks for your kind words!
I'll leave you with a test render. Although I'm not great a ZBrush lighting I actually quite like the painterly look.

Ha! That's freakin' me out. Didn't know she was a junkie. ;)
The face stands out real nice on that last render. I think the light overall might be a bit harsh though. Maybe you could selectively light areas with point lights or mix multiple render passes.

Marsyas: Haha... yes she's an acid junkie ;) I'm gonna look into render passes later today. It might be the way to go. If I can output a colour, spec and AO pass with some PS lurve then I'll be happy. Thanks for your input.

Dude... she's leaking water. Is she running to get her next hit? Can't wait to see the final render. ;)

Alliecat 08 & maxinkuk: Thank you!!
Update - Ok I think I'm getting somewhere now. Rendering in layers is definitely the way to go. This may even be used as one of my final images. 2 layers - 1) a simple one with my colours and materials and the default light and preview renderer, 2) everything filled with the MatCap White. Layer 2 overlayed in PS over Layer one and Bob's yer uncle! I like the moody filmic feel to this so I may carry on in the same trend. Turntable is also rendered. I can't believe I might actually meet the deadline :)

Very nice everything looks cool.
But I still think the pose is off. It seems pretty strange, somethings not right.. hmmm..

Hey Captain Sensible, she is looking good. I like that render, it looks a bit like a figurine. I might add just a bit more variation to the skin tones with the colorize spray brush. :tu:

Harmonic: Thanks! I've added some subtle skin variation now.
wethand: Thanks man!
spimmy: Thank you!
Probably my last update before the final post. I've added some subtle skin tones that may not be entirely visible in the render. I've tinkered a little with the render itself. Other than that I've been comping final renders and the turntable. I would like to thank everyone for their input and crits and also for their encouraging support throughout! Good luck to all!! There's an incredible amount of brilliantly inspiring entries :D

Heh, I wouldn't want to mess with her! I dig the pose and the base is quite nice. I know how trickly working with the basic materials can be, but your layer-rendering method seems to be working out well! Good luck with all your final touches, looking forward to seeing the final!
Looking good, look forward to your final post, good luck matey! :tu:  :tu:
