Good to see you are all still here. Due to a number of really boring/personal/work related reasons I haven't been allowed out to play for several months. However, this very evening I found a room at the back of my house that still had a PC in it and hello!....

Glen I would like to poke around in your brain for a minute if you don't mind. I love your bio-metalic materials. When creating such a material is it a combination of a painted "texture" and material that gives it that look or is it strictly your material settings? For example the image with the three torso shots....the bottom torso is shown with a rusty corroded metal looking material. Is it all just the material or is the object painted as well? I would be interested in having a glimpse at those settings. :)

Mentat; With reference to my material settings the answer would have to be part material/part paint. I must admit, metals are one of my favorite subjects in ZBrush and I have hundreds of materials collected including some taken from Pixolator (ie. the Rusted idol settings).
For this image I did all the material setup and painting onto the model in the image. By this I mean that I did not use texture master at all, rather, I built the model piece by piece, snapped the parts into the canvas and worked on it with materials and paint. Variing the alpha brush is always good and making good use of color bump in the material settings give great veins and bumps.

Many thanks Cn. Time for a bit of honesty. I never seem to be able to finish a piece of work these days and as a result I am rarely happy with the posted image. I want to spend time on images now (Time being a commodity that I just don't have enough of these days, hence my absence from the graphic art scene). My aim for the coming months would be to work on bigger images starting with a sketch and working through to a final print ready piece. This is something you seem to do very well in my eyes. Good to see you posting here and well done on the renderosity article in the recent edition of their mag. Both you and I managed to get a feature in there so a strong showing for ZBrush it seems.

yeah, guess we're good advertisers of Z.
what people don't know is that you and I didn't actively pursue to be in the mag. instead, we were asked to contribute.
we're wandering off the subject a bit, but I haven't received my copy mag yet :(
I've only read your piece from a scanned copy. it's quite remarkable, and to paraphrase Alexander the Great, "if I weren't CNeofotistos, I'd like to be GSouthern"

but now let's stop being egotistical, and start taking a little care of ourselves

Hell yeah!
I too have that "I am not worthy' feeling.
I am soo glad to bless with some new stuff from you Glen.

I have a question if I may. Is the energy from the weapon made in ZBrush or is it PS postwork?
It also accured to me that it might be caused by tablet sensativity (those lusious variations)....?

Thanks you and once again...Amazing work!

The quality of the final piece is undeniable. It is marvelous. But still, for myself at least, I found that the second image was the most appealing as there was a serenity and uncomplicated certainty about the creatures mood. It wasn't rushing, jumping, or fleeing, it was calm. I still get this in the end, but I preferred its expression in no.2

I feel like the doofus king complaining to Mozart that he's used too many notes.

Maybe artists should sometimes descontruct their works themselves rather than suffer fools like me in silence :)

How do you bring out the depth when painting? All your colors have a great compliment to each other. Sweet work Mr. Southern.

There is a small handfull of artists that I truly admire and aspire to reach their level of skill. (Ironically, at least 4 of them, and yourself, have posted in this thread). I admit, I rarely get to visit outside our ZBrush realm to see what other artists have to offer, but despite the limited size of our party, I still find a wealth of inspiration and absolute awe at the level of creativity and skill shown here. You are certainly a fine, creative, and generous artist, and I always appreciate your work. In layman terms, Damn, yer good!

PS: Thanks again for taking the time to view my little "Beast". It really means alot to me.

Slosh: I must admit that I venture as far a field from ZBC as I can. I am a firm believer that inspiration can can from a million places and the more you visit the better your work becomes.
I would encourage al digital artists to try as many other programs as they can get their hands on. The thing I find with ZBrush is that as a flexible artists tool, I can't find better.
Yes, photoshop is amazing and I couldn't do without it on my desktop but I never, ever sit down and create an image just within Photoshop.
Painter is also an amazing piece of kit with a plethora of differnt brushes and settings that would take a lifetime to master (Look at Don Seegmillers work).
On to the 3D world, Lightwave is another or my prefered tools but to get a result that I am happy with I have to invest weeks and weeks of my time.
So, as a man who has had a recent vacation from ZBrush Central I can agree with you that it is one of the best places to visit on the web. I do not post regularly on any other forum.
I have worked with ZBrush since November 2000 and I would have to say it is my favorite artistic program.

I sleep around with others but I come home every night to ZB. ;)

Glen
