View Full Version : How to get continuous paint?

I always have this problem with running out of paint on the brush and I'm left with corners that are notorious for running into other edges and well usually blending them out loses detail.

Is there a 2D painting tutorial that could help also?

There is a limit on the length of stroke you can paint. Sounds to me as though you're exceeding this - try using more but shorter strokes.

Didn't really understand the second problem - maybe you could post an example.

It has a bit of depth involved, but check out Newbie Lesson 2 in the New Users section of the QuickLinks. It's a painting tutorial, rather than a modeling tutorial.

If you wanted to paint in true 2D, then you'd fill your canvas with black before you start and turn off ZADD in the Draw palette.

Ok, thanks. I sometimes run out of paint while trying to fill a layer and going back over it automatically covers up the previous layer when I make a mistake and I get the double edges so I guess that's the general example.

Yes, I used a technique of covering the canvas in typical grey with no material or color then painting over it with the hair brush in fine strokes. Sort of like pouring an outline for what will later be contrasts.

But what I'm having trouble over right now is working with detail. Smudge works well but it also blurs the definition and I have problems evening out the various levels.

Would it help to turn of ZADD while you paint? Or, leave ZADD on, then use the blur brush to smooth only Z, not color?

You mentioned that you are having trouble filling a layer. Have you tried Ctrl+F? That is the keyboard shortcut for Layer>Fill, which fills the entire layer with the currently selected color or texture and material.

Another way to cover large areas at once is with the Drag Rectangle stroke from the Stroke palette. It uses the current alpha shape, so you can get some great effects.

Okay, thanks guys. I'll try to make a picture using your advice and lay off the zadd button. ;)

I haven't yet used blur on just material, I think it should help with equalizing. I sometimes use it on post-work, duh,..
