View Full Version : Working on my portfolio...

Although I don't really need to get into the 3D industry, as I have a pretty good job now, I think it would be a good idea to make a reel and a portfolio to "showcase" my talents as an artist.
So, I've spent the past few days working on my first project, and I had a lot of success with what I wanted to do. If anyone remembers my "troubles" with the vegetation thread I had a while back you would know that I couldn't figure out how to multi-mark the leaves onto a tree. Well, I figured it out, although it was a bit weird to do.
Anyway, modeled in Zbrush, put together in Silo, UV mapped in Zbrush and Unwrap3D, and made into one model without losing the leaves, and rendered for your viewing pleasure!

Very cool picture!
Thanks for shareing :)
I have to make the same thing as you, My gallery is way out dated,
I am just trying to put together a cool theme for all the webpage buttons and the title and stuff..
Are the leaves on your tree alpa masked? or did you coma back later and replace the polys with 3d leaves? what ever you did, it looks realy good :)
greatness!...add a ground plane to have a sense of foundation, and it's good to go.
I especially like the b&w render.

Fantastic....seems you solved your problem and mastered it.
I am not quite sure from your post if it is all done and rendered in z2 and just manipulated the uv's or if manipulated them and rendered with alphas in the other program.
If all in z......I know more than a few of us would be interested in the solution.....if ya can. ;)

Such a nice character design, Chad. The detail is superb. I especially like the fungus on his shins. Great touch there. Face and general
posture denote his advanced years. He's just
damn cool...

amazing! just wish to see the bigger render to see the details!

Thanks for the kind response everyone! I plan on making a scene with this guy, so he won't be floating in space, so to speak.
About the model. Everything is rendered entirely in Zbrush 2. The leaves are simple planes, that I added in Silo, 100% by hand. I used an alpha, transparency setting in the texture menu, to make the leaves inside the polygon. It was really pretty easy to do. The character is fully posable, thanks to Zbrush 2 allowing you to switch models at the lower level subd. I pose the character in Silo, import the pose into the base level in Zbrush, and slide back to the highest level. Pretty cool.
Here is some larger renders that I did before posing the character, and adding the staff and fungus.

Before I finish the scene for this guy, I'm going to be doing 3 other models. So it will be another week or so before I get to update this thread with any more art. One thing I have planned is to make tutorials on how I made all the different elements of my portfolio. That way folks can see how it was done, to an extent. But that will be a while from now.
Thanks for looking,
Chad

Hi Chad,
Very convincing model... and posable? Neat.
At some point when you take a pass at the final renders it might be good to experiment with the perspective render option to add a sense of tree-sized scale to the model (including camera pov.)
Good work!

Yup, I've already been experimenting with the perspective. It seems that the focal point is dependant on the current pivot point. So moving the pivot point towards his feet produces that "looking up" angle. Once I get a scene designed, I'll put him in a better pose, and render it out from an interesting angle! I was working on doing a turntable animation of this guy too, but I can't get a good result from the perspective view. It seems like it shrinks the model, then enlarges it. I'll have to play around with it some more before I do a final turntable.
Chad
PS: I forgot I uploaded a test render that is in a perspective shot like you suggested Sven. You can view it here:

Really interesting techique and excellent result. :tu: :tu: :tu:

what if you used the....shoot now I forget the name of it......the button that allows you to turn a piece on its own axis rather than its parent when the parent is hidden.
would clicking on that make it turn in its own space instead of globally?
hahaha if that even makes sense....I got it in my head but don't know if I got it out so it makes sense to humans hahaha.

If you're talking about the gyro, then that's what I'm using. I exit edit mode, and turn on perspective, and render away. After playing with it some more tonight, it doesn't focuse just on the gyro. I guess I was just a little tired when I was messing with it late last night. heh
Anyway, here is the last render of this guy for awhile. I did some quick photoshop work on him, and added some Zbrush rendered trees in the background.

nice model chad! i really like the foliage including the grass in the foreground - the lighting on that is really nice. could you give us a little more info on the steps you took to create an individual leaf on a transparent plane - it looks great and might be nice way to achieve fur and feather effects.
well done :tu:
