For the moment the skull looks like a cross between a very young, or a very old person
The angle of the mandible looks like that of a baby but the form of the mandible looks like that of an old skull..the nasal cavity is small as a child's, but the skull
has no signs of the gaps of unossified bone
...it's a sort of hybrid skull ;)
I used Silo to fuse the zygomatic arch into the temporal bone.

So far the modeling is quite superb and looks like it will develop into a fine picture. I know you have lots to do yet but keep it going I'd love to see the progress on this one. One thing I would change at this stage is the texture, it looks to much like leather and not bone, I think you may be closer to what you want by just changing the texture.
Anyways well done I like this image and will call back here to check the progress

thanks willog, i made a sort of bone texture
but i posted the skull's with a wax like material because.....well, i just like the
shiny wax look i think :D
But just for you i post a skull with a more bone-like material,i'm not sure its the same skull or a slightly altered version

Really great model! The child like proportions and withered "old man" jaw give it a very alien feel, wonderful! I love both of the mats too, you wouldn't care to post your settings? - Baz

Skulls are always tricky to do but they are a great way to learn anatomy. Yours is very well done. Keep posting your progress

I'm a newbie and have lurked for a while here, quietly learning from the masters! Superb modelling and texturing!!
Are you going to add suture lines_ I think they add to the coolness!
Watching with interest!

Skulls are tricky indeed, think i took it to far, i have to retrace a few steps, still
i like this image because it reminds me of the skull's found on Vanitas painting...very ancient and battered !

Still working on my skull, i'm not sure abouth the angle of the mandible ?
to this moment no texture maps , no projection master ,only one material
in various settings. Could not resist in making a simple scene ;) SCHEDELSCENE03.jpg

Nice works! :tu:
I like the bone textures.

jantim
08-06-04, 12:38 AM
I have been using projection-master for this little test, no bone material ,just
a fast shader and texture maps....i could not use the bone- material with these
textures because the texture-map could not be seen together with the bone-material !.....i dont now why?...perhaps because it's a 4 channel shader ???
this is a w.i.p. so the textures are not as in life, or death, in this case:) test.jpg

I do too like the material settings on all of them, specially that blue touch:D

diff'rent skull...diff'rent texture maps !!test04.jpg

As you can see on this picture the detail of the texturemap is not as clear on
some materials, as it is on others .

Hi JanTim,

I just want to compliment you on your work with the skull; absolutely great modeling. I’m new with ZB (just purchased the Mac 1.55 version- but wait with experiments when the 2 version will be released) Till now I’ve professionally worked with Cinema4D, Strata Pro, Amapi and Bodypaint3D (for UV Mapping) for 9 years by now and very interested in Z-Brush. Your work inspired me a little further; thank you for that!

Greetings from a very hot Netherland,

Rob

Thank's Rob,

I bought the 1.5 version just to use Zbrush 2 , and i was just as inspired by
the great things i saw people do with the beta version:D
But be prepared for re-learning a lot of things if you use Zbrush:ex:
The way materials work with light was for me totally new, just as the way
shadows look in Zbrush ! Not to speak of the way scenes are put together!
But i've never been as productive with new software as with Zbrush:lol:

As you can see on this picture the detail of the texturemap is not as clear on
some materials, as it is on others .
You have to keep in mind that each material has different settings that might affect the look of the texture. Compare the color bump of each of your materials and check other settings to try to get the results you want.

For the moment a schedel04.jpg new rendering

RobStone

Thanks Jantim, for the kind ’warnings’ :D

I’m especially interested in the 3D modeling detail effects from ZB2 (as can be seen in the Fish demo, from Pixolator); those are amazing. About the lighting and sceneset-up; I think I will finally export the ZB models back into Cinema4D or StrataPro...

So I think (as far I can see for now) I will use ZB2 for sculpting (and perhaps texturing) features...

Again; I love your Skull modeling, I certainly keep an eye on how this project develops in the nearby future! Good luck!

Reworked my skull and jaw.., the jaw looked to gnarled , more like a
fossil to me
This lookes much better, i'm also looking to find a ballance between a material
and a texture ! In this image i only used a material, no texture mapSCHEDELS00002.jpg

At first i tried to make a simple scene with 3 or 4 materials....it looked pretty bad  I am still strugling with the light & shadow settings in zbrush !
Then i tried to make a little scene with only one material, just to see how
the lights ,shadows and material interact !
I used the highest values for shadow-intensity and lenght...i wanted to make a picture with a high contrast ,and to use the shadows to bring the scene more
together ( hope i make myself clear ?)
The shadow of the big skull should make a bigger and darker shadow on the
wall, i think !.....:o

Because i want to use my skull in a scene, i'm experimenting with light and
shadow settings to make a nice ambiance with simple props .

jantim

Thank's abxy,

This is not an update on this scene, just one of a yesterday's session !
Just a bigger contrast between light and dark, some light positions cast a
to small shadow, that has something to do with zbrush way of making a solid
3-D model into pixols...you lose what you don't see, including the full shadow !

New scene,.....old props,well mostly !
I've got to make some objects to make a better scene !

Hello,

nice skull! I'm especially interested in how you did the modelling of the side part of the skull which has a hole in it.

I'm also modelling a skull with zspheres and don't know how to connect two zspheres from diferent parts of the model to create a "bridge" (and then have a hole in the model).

Thanks for your help

jantim

Macaco...i did that part in "Silo" thats a modeller...i don't think you can do that in Zbrush i'm afraid

I love the material on this skull, did you just take the wax material and hand brush the detail work or did you create a new material based on the wax one?

jantim
05-12-08, 12:09 AM
Wow,..this thread is as old as the skull itself  ...to be honest i don't know the settings for the material(s) i used here .Its made in ZB2 and some/most of the materials i made then don't work so good with ZB 3, so sorry can't help ye on this one!
