View Full Version : First Sculpt!
This is my first non-question post to the forum--Cthulhu! The image is a render of my first completed ZBrush piece. Granted, it's gray and putty-colored, but that's because it's going to be turned into a prize medallion for an upcoming local horror convention. The figure was produced by drawing a grayscale image in Photoshop, then importing it as an Alpha and Alpha-skinning it into a flat 3D object, which was further refined in ZBrush. The base and lettering, as well as the render, were in Cinema 4D. The reason I did it that way instead of modelling it in ZSpheres was because it's going to be turned into an actual object using a computer-controlled micro milling machine, and I was afraid that modelling it in ZSpheres might allow for too many undercuts, which the milling machine can't handle. After it's milled and cast, each one will have at least nine miniature "googly eyes" stuck to it. It'll be reaaaaly goofy. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200304/user_image-1051492818zbc.jpeg
yosgoth and the evereating mountain of madness :) how much is it to get these done?...i have a friend who is a machinist and has made skulls and stuff but have never really asked him about it.
Hmmmmm....I'm sorta embarrassed to say I don't know. I'm a faculty member at a big art school here and I'm doing this as part of some investigation into 3D printing. There's one machine on campus and sometimes available for faculty use, and the school is very interested in getting another, different style one. One of the perks, I guess....

Once it's done, it would be interesting to see a photo of it. Looks pretty good so far.

This is cool! A cool trophy! Will it be bronze?
Be sure to post your finished real 3d piece after it's done!
Good job,
Michael
OK! At long last, here are the finished medals. They were carved out of hard jeweler's wax by a computer controlled cutter, then a mold was made in Room Temperature Vulcanizing Silicone, after which a bunch of casts were made in urethane resin. The casts were primed with Krylon primer and painted with a mixture of metal-powder and alkyd resin. Several coats of different colors were used to bring out the detail, then the googly eyes were glued on. They're 2.5 inches high. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200306/user_image-1055366422xvi.jpg

Hey, that looks pretty nice. We have a few rapid prototyping machines of various sourts here. One thing that we have done (not me personally though) is after "printing" the piece and cleaning and smoothing, we painted it with metal paint (paint that actually has metal in it) and then electroplated it. The pieces I saw turned out pretty good in my opinion.
Your look pretty good the way that finished them. Very interesting stuff indeed. Always fun to see things come to life.
