I am just practising and I have this gear tool. It is at the default setting and there is a mesh segment that goes to the inner circle. When I painted the yellow material on it filled the circle to the mesh which is what I would have expected but when I released the pen the material sort of stops in the middle of the mesh. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1012517927seu.jpg

Thank for having a go ez but I was hoping to understand what is happening. I would like to keep the object in edit mode. If I look at the mesh it seems to colour the polygons with the pen down but it is diffent when I lift the pen up. I would like to understand why I can fill the polygons with material but it change when I life the pen

I've tried and see what you mean. Try increasing mesh density. :)

this is what you need when staying in edit mode for that 3d object ( texture master) http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=002034
i tryed it and it works fine but that material your working with can give you a little trouble..
i know what you mean but texture master will do it for you i tested it.
use (singel layer brush) same method as the first post and change material after you used texture master to apply it.
here what i made and still in edit mode.
