View Full Version : I need help with subdividing and smoothing.

OK, I'm at a point with my body that I need a denser mesh to do details, but when I divide and smooth, whole patches remain untouched and coarse. I've tried masking all to no effect. What am I doing wrong?

Also I've just notice some minute holes in my mesh where the zspheres have created a little tunnel by accident. Is there any way to "fill" these?

Curious, could you perhaps show a screenshot of your mesh , it's hard to get an idea of what's going wrong exactly.

euhm , well actually it doesnt have to be a screenshot a saved image from within Zbrush is ok too. But making a screenshot is done bu using the printscreen button on your keyboard and then using CTRL+V in a graphics program to paste the screenshot into a document.

Example 1:

A close up of the leg where half was divided and smoothed, and the other half is still crap. I believe the black plane in the preview box is actually making the line of demarkation.

I attempted to offset the model so the plane was not intersecting it, but this did not help. I tried turning on infront and behind in the channels menu, but this didn't do anything either.

Exaple 2:

A close up of the neck artefacts that I think are holes. Smoothing does not get rid of them, just changes there shape.

Hi curious
You can't fill the holes
but you can in very big zoom in Edit Mode + Quick + Pf + Size brush 1 or 2
"Move" very precisely vertex !
Hope this help!

may be you had a mask turned on, without showing it... to check that press show mask, if some of your model turns dark, this is your mask. then you can press delete, to delete it. now if you subdivide the wwhole mesh is affected.

I'm stuck. There's no mask on the thing. I tried clearing, masking, and clearing again. I'm getting ticked off. I was happy with my mesh, but now I can't finish it! What gives?

Pilou,

I don't understand how moving vertexes will close a hole. There will still be a slit or crevice or something even if the points are touching won't there?

The only time I've seen holes like that appear is when skinning a Zsphere with unified skinning but using a low resolution...

Im not sure at all but those images came when using Zsphere and then unified skin you overstrech some area.
I have reproduced these error and Im sending a zip which show the type of manipulations that can reproduce it.
Finally I have to say that I do not know to much ZB progtram.
Excuse me

By the way, within ZBrush you can make holes that have been caused by flipped polygons disappear by pressing Tool>Modifiers>Double. This converts the polygons to double-sided so that even flipped ones are visible.

Hi Curious
Because from your image your holes seems making by some moves in the bad way :)
If it's realy a hole, I don't know the process :(

Thanks everybody for explaning how the holes happened, I'll try and avoid doing that in the future.

Aurick, the double tip helps a little (still funky and pinched, but not as bad).

Absolutely stumped why huge patches still wont divide or smooth. Maybe Pixolator could throw in his 2 cents?
