I'm going through the quicktour and all, I just got to the primers. I still haven't fully learned to use the Central quicklinks or the documenation I have either but I am doing a small modem for practice. I was modeling a picture of a dog shown here: http://obscurity.faithweb.com/Dog.jpg
I want to know how to texture(or color specific parts of it like the tongue) without touching the green background. I might even want to add fur, and last but not least I want to make indentions and shape it, but when I try it does everything in a sort of cone shape so it looks funny.
If you can help me with any of my small problems I'd be thankful, I can do most of this part of the way but I end up running into things that stop me from even coming close to resembling what I need.

hmmmmm 1. read about the Zscripts and how to use them under the quicklinks...there is one called basic modeling I believe...very good stuff... when you open the Zbrush program there is a floating tool bar...the Tab button makes it hide and reappear..so if you need it out of your way while modeling...2. you have figured out how to push and pull on a sphere..that is good....start out with the color selected to the default...for eyes and stuff you have to change the brush/cursor size..and you do that on the floating menu...(bottom right set of number..draw size...that changes the size and effect your tool will have) you have options of changing materials and textures..while the model is in edit mode click on the materials tab or it may be at the top of your screen...there are a whole list of different materials there...when you click a material it will be applied to your model...try messing around with taht first and then let us know...dont be afraid to click around and experiment too...coz you wont hurt anything by playing around...post us your results and further questions...but the quicklinks section can be your best friend...and learn how to use those scripts...that also is a very helpful learning tool.....good luck and let us know how its going..
Kind Regards,

One thing you might try is to start the document, size it, then go to Layers->Modifiers, choose Flat color material, then click on Fill...This will fill the currently selected layer with color...Choosing Flat Color material means that your background won't react with the lighting...If you want your background to react with the lighting, use a material like basic shader, or any other for the fill.
Now, add another layer, model in this layer.
If you go to the Layers display, you can click on the icon for your background, and turn it off temporarily. Now you can just work on your model layer. When you click on the layer icon, its background turns grey to indicate that it is turned off, and teal to show it is on...
