He awoke with his mouth as dry and rough as sandpaper. A wind blew, which irritated his eyes, and yet he couldn't blink to moisten them.
But he could look around. It was a fine view, high above, many buildings and windows visible. He could almost see in to several of them.
Almost. Was is such a horrible crime? Just to look in? To observe? Nobody gets hurt. And usually nobody is none the wiser.
Did the crime warrant this punishment? He wanted to scream, but his jaw was locked tight. His eyes burned now, every subtle movement abraded by a thousand needles made out of stone.

This image was inspired by an old calendar with stone gargoyles as the subject matter.
The deceptively simplistic, stylized heads displayed were actually difficult to recreate. Their rough hewn features and style proved to be a challenge in both sculpting and material qualities.
I started with a basic sphere, modeled it some, then OPTIMIZED the mesh about 25%. Then I did some more shaping to pull out softened forms. Next, I DIVIDED them mesh. This had the effect of creating some hard edges, which in this case, is what I wanted.
I initially tried mapping brick and rock textures on the models, but none of this really looked right, so I played with the noise and color bump parameters to get close to stone (or my perception of it) 2.5D painting added more random imperfections.
I've a new appreciation for these old gargoyles, and would like to attempt this again.

Take it from 'Stonecutter', (And I DO work stone...It's not just a 'handle'!), you succeeded brilliantly on the stone! :tu:
Those eyes, in that stone face are haunting, and I'll probably dream about this gargoyle tonight! Wonderful in the dictionary sense of the word!

Very nice, indeed, Ken. The concept and story are cool, and the execution is as usual masterful.

By the way, from a past post by Pixolator it sounds some of the materials will soon have the S3 and maybe even S4 channels activated. Can you imagine how cool stone will be with two different noise values operating together, one for the grainy pitts and the other for color variation throughout the stone? Wow!

Nice work, reminds me of temple carvings in India. The story reminded me of a short story by Harlan Ellison: I have no mouth and I must scream.

The stone is perfect! Please tell us how you got there?
I have been messing around with virtual stone for a the last few months, but have only gottn the smooth ones to look right.
I love the face too. All in all, I wish I had done it! LOL
thanks for sharing this.

Outstanding re-creation Ken B !
I'm interested in gargolyes myself and the uses they were/are put to in various parts of the world.
Great sand and rock textures!
Thank you for sharing your technique also.

Paul

Here are the settings of the modified basic material to create the stone look in the image above. Playing with the curve modifier for the noise is a main key to getting countless different material effects.

I'd love for other material channels to be available so I look forward to that inclusion in a future release.

Ohhhhh Great image!!! although the story is a great addition, as soon as i saw this piece, I felt his pain, and thought what did this guy do to deserve his fate! LOL

Just about missed this one Ken. Gargoyles are something else I like, for some odd reason. I've a small, but growing collection of them... staring at me.
Your modelling is on the mark, as is the texture. Very convincing stone work.

the story is a bit cliche, I'm afraid :) it was the punishment in quite a few sci-fi b-novels, being turned into a statue with living eyes.

BUT, the execution couldn't have been better, my friend :) :tu: :tu: :tu:
