cannedmushrooms_webres.jpg
Well I have been developing an online curriculum for many classes in 3D and now it’s Zbrush's turn for a brand new shinny season 2.
Free of course.
Later there will be a high res version of it but for now all you really have to do is watch and learn
This will populate my www.houseoftutorials.net (http://www.houseoftutorials.net/) curriculum project when done. You are all free to login as a guest to the site for a preview.
The first video describes the series and why I wanted to redo some of the lessons.

Hi
I am sorry to report that VEOH has had a serious decline and in many countries including mine the VEOH website is BLOCKED.
Just for your information that means we are unable to see any of your great stuff.
Hmmm! Saddness!

For your info VEOH has done the dirty on bout 100 plus countries and blocked them.
Unknown reason but likely money or pressure from film industry.
Maybe another place could also be used to post your valuable lessons.
THANX IN ADVANCE

Yes chapter 12
I was continueing from chapter 3 when I started to get a little insane with the content. Chapter 12 will never make it into the classroom because it is not task driven (no outcome at the end to turn in) But I had too much fun making it not to share. So here it is for the sake of fun;)
Some videos are still loading;) I'll Continue chapter 3 after this series is done

First off, I just want to say that your tutorials are amazing! I am still new to ZBrush and they have helped me more than the ZBrush DVDs have, and the fact that you are giving them to the ZBrush community for free is an added bonus. I am soon going to start working on some graphics for album covers/website/etc... for my bands and was woundering if you have and tutorials on painting/coloring the obects with different materials and how to do it, I still have not been able to figure that one out yet. I love the tutorial on the axe and sheild especially (huge fan of the middle-ages) and have been working on a sheild design for my bands and once I get it sculpted I was woundering how to get it the wood/metallic look to it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

unfortunately the tripple-crap commercialized Veoh won't allow me to watch these, well 5 minutes of each...even installed the VeohTV program..duh not able to watch them.
thanks though for your efforts
Hi, Jason.
Have you done a tutorial showing the workflow between ZBrush and Maya for creating blend shapes? I've seen your Maya deformer video and that is helpful but I was looking for a tutorial that showed putting a blend shaped head on a key framed body. Any thoughts?
Here is a link to a demo of blend shape technology in Maya that I cannot find. Thoughts?

If the animations you already have are in traX editor format then you can probally add blendshapes to the already underlaying mesh.
I do have a blendshape video but I used maya to make the blendshapes. Using Zbrush you have to use worldspace I believe to import the blendshapes from Zbrush.
on houseoftutorials.net under the (animation I) look for the last lessons for the Trax editor. The blendshape video is in my signature below under maya.
I know worldspace in the factor between the two, and when you import it in make sure you turn groups off on the obj import in maya, (same as you would when you do UVS)
Anyway fresh from the stack comes chapter 4
Enjoy. 0305 Explains chapter 3 and 12
Soon to be on youtube also

Rapidshare is out of the question but I am open to sudjestion on any Veoh like sites that allow posting in embeded format (example below)

Hi, Jason.
I've accessed your class site and see the 'Trax' videos. However, I'm not able to tell which ones deal with blendshapes. Direction? When I get to '12' it's all about 'Weights'.
Thanks!

http://www.veoh.com/videos/v812356MBptnr26
Animation=Trax
Modeling=deformers and blend shapes
is how I seperated them
So under the modeling class I teach blendshapes
http://www.veoh.com/videos/v812356MBptnr26
is the blendshape video
In lesson 12 I do some character sets (very important)
you should learn character sets before trax
The order of learning should be
1. Blend Shapes
2. skinning
3. Character sets
4. Traxx
Hopefully your already done animations arnt tooo far along, because I'm pretty sure you will have to redo them unless your head is detached on your model (2 different objs) This way you can unskin the head / attach the blend shapes and them reskin the head.

firstly I want to say hi to all you highly skilled modelers here on zbrush central!
So, I realize this may not be the best spot for this, but I'm new to zbrush and this squirkle tutorial is driving me insane. I really want to create the macro, but when I follow the steps in the video there isnt an option for enableing uv under the texture palette. In fact theres only about 4 or 5 options total.
So I tried turning the cude into a 3d polymesh, and I was actually able to see the enableuv and disableuv options. Only problem was that it seems enableuv had already been selected, not sure why. So I moved on hapily thinking I had fixed it, however when I got to the reconstruct subdivide step, my results werent so "squirkley"? So I was hoping that I may find some help here in my epic quest for the squirkle. Fixed. All I had to do was click on the unified skin to continue. Can't beleive it was that simple. Thanks jason for all the amazing tutorials!

I viewed your 0410 Alpha Grab Tile video and was wondering if cartoon car shapes can be made using the process - if so do you have a video for it? I was viewing the tutorial here http://www.pixologic.com/zclassroom/artistspotlight/
where he uses a mask on the 3dplane to mask the 3dplane out - it's the arch tut
and then viewed your video and was wondering if cartoon cars can be made that way (info from both tuts)

Do you mean project a car onto a 3d plane making some sort of relief Sculpture. (like this)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/37/Qajari_relief.jpg
Or do you mean make a cartoon car that you can actually spin around.
Zbrush might not be your best choice for either. Cars or any non organic modeling is best handled in maya or max with the exception to Seb's architecture modeling.
If you had some sort or example of this "idea" you trying to do maybe I can give you a better solution.

I am interested in hi detailing from picture made into alpha bas relief models.
For the cartoon cars - thinking more like plastic model car kits here's a few images
http://www.traffic-modelcars.com/images/slotcars-bmc32/bmc2997m-05.jpg
and here
http://www.bombaydigital.com/boxster/projects/model/photos/002primed.jpeg
which your video 0410 Alpha Grab Tile reminded me of.
I guess one way would be to take pictures of the flater parts and make alphas from them.
Thinking like vacum forming machines.

You mention you use photoshop cs3 entended and photoshop cs2 for making some of your alphas. Can you list some more graphics software for creating 16 bit alphas from photos. Photoshop cs3 extended is about 995 dollars and at this time would like to make 16 bit alphas from photos without spending 995 dollars.

It answered most of my questions. One note you made the casting mold with flange how do I deleate the flange from around the bas relief form? Or would that be the same as the process used in the arch tut?
Thanks for the 0602 tut and the 0601:cool:

I cant stand box modeling in Zbrush. ;)
If you have ever box modeled before in any other app you would too.
That plane in Zbrush = 1 hour
Blender , Maya , Max about = 5mins
Reason, there is no easy way to pull faces only points.
so ya anywho
The diorama Zbrush idea sounds fun but I just got got back to work so my time with zbrush has been few and are between lately.
I have 22 new minds to warp ;) and I'm going on day 4.
Uploading the vids for the foreigners that are behind enemy lines right now
Just check the videos above later on today for the links. They should be under the videos.

Jason,
You mentioned making a vacuum form mold. I was thinking of using ZBrush as a virtual vacuum form machine to create shapes to be put together in subtools and combined into one model. After combining into one model the model to be reshaped and detailed. However, what you did in the tutorial could work for making simple bas relief non undercuts molds (I use the word simple here not about details, as one could have plenty of details but with no undercuts, but about not having undercuts to the mold and referring to the type of mold being made). It would be a template to make a mold or molds from. As you pointed out in the tutorial watch the areas that have undercuts because the areas that undercut would not allow the casting to be removed from the mold without destroying the mold and may or may not destroy the casting made by the mold. The process would to create the mold in zbrush as in your tutorial using the add not the negative, Once the template is made make a 3d print from the model (the template). Once the prototype is 3d printed from the zbrush template one would have to figure out what material is to be casted into the mold then the prototype from 3d printing would be casted into a material that would allow the material that one wanted the casting to be.
You asked me to let you know how things are working. I found a few free car models and downloaded them and the first problem I came across was that the car model (all the ones I downloaded) when imported into Zbrush would crush the model when doing geometry divide. And if I used the imported car model without geometry divide you can see some poly triangles (I think that's what they are called) when you add it to the 3d plane tool. However, when you geometry divide when the car model is added to the 3d plane tool the same effect of the car crushed model as mentioned above. So, finding the right type of car models that do not crush would allow the creation of shapes as described in your tutorial. Now having said that, I could make some nice demolition derby cars and/or a junk yard scene. After doing this I think another way to get the shapes would be to use alphas of front, back, the two sides, top and bottom of a car. After doing a goggle search did not find any photos so did not try it.
As to the box modeling comment, it looks like no one whats to do box modeling in Zbrush and the virtual vacuum machine zbrush (and thanks again for the tutorial) was one work around I thought might work for getting around box modeling in zbrush.
As to the Virtual Set (filmmaking or otherwise) least you found it interesting and maybe a tutorial ;)

Ever box model in Zbrush?
Ever try to run the deformation pallet?
Maya vs Zbrush fun while making a sword base model in both programs.
Who will win?

Interesting workflow! I can't afford Maya right now, so my hard edged modeling is lacking. I haven't really looked into any other, cheaper 3d packages for mac. These helped me see the major disadvantages in using zbrush for box modeling, but also ways to accomplish it. Cool vids across the board, man! Thanx for the effort!

James, I think I remember you saying you're a 2D guy first and ZB is your 3D as an additional tool right?
Well if you want a package to do box modeling, edge loop modeling etc, I can recommend Silo, great tool set although a little harder to use compared to it's original incarnation, now at 2.something. Also, check out wings 3d, it is great and free, and don't be fooled by free, or the slight learning curve to come to grips with finding the tools/procedure, great app. I think Silo is around $159 or so. Good deal for you, you're in the UK right?

Well after playing for the last few days in 3.12 and figuring out all the new goodies and how they work. I decided a review is needed for those that do not have it or who are new to Zbrush and want to know whats so special about it.

disclaimer
This video was made with no prior support from pixologic as far as a help manual and button descriptions missing, so if I missed something along the way its because as of October 2, 08 I reinlisted myself as a Zbrush noob for the version change.
The video is to show the potential of Zbrush but a better updated video will be released in the future.
So for now enjoy this PRE PRE noob video ;) And take its contents lightly.

thanks jason for the intro, you didn't show the adaptive skin when you moved that one topology point way off the mesh, i would've liked to have seen what happened then, did the skin still stick or stretch out.
nice catch on the bug.
i'm confused as to how the multiple textures is different than it is in 3.1, could you explain, totally sucks that you can't see them both at once, i thought that was going to be the point.
zooming is way cool.
how does the cursor feel to you, now that its stuck to the surface?
oh one more thing, is it possible to paint on textures outside of PM, or still only polypaint to texture?

spaceboy412: In 3.12 you CAN view multiple textures, UV maps and displacements all at once. Within couple of weeks, proper information about the new features will be posted here at ZBC.

Thats cool I added a disclaimer to the video.
Ok so the magical button for multiple texture viewing.
It driving me nuts ;)
1 Question
Can we do it now? Or are we waiting 2 weeks for some sorta plugin?
Opps thats two questions ;)
Ill test the topology thing here in a little bit space, But I believe it should stick pretty good ;)

No "magical button", each subtool can have its own Texture + UV Mapping + Displacement Map + PolyPainting + Morph Target... you get the point:)

OOOOOWWW that
NICE.
I was combining the subtools together for posing reasons.
SO
separate subtools = preview
Combined however = make a new UV map to support those combined tools
Still Really powerful since I cant name one time where I seen a character with a UV map or every piece of armor.
Plus after you pose you can group split them and they can be reassigned there textures again in worst case senerio.
Ewwww Nice
Kudos on the export to maya retain placement thing btw.
all the subtools line up in world space now without the need of combining the tools in zbrush first.
Thanks or the clarification on textures very cool
Follow up
Painting on Zspheres was discovered while playing around this morning.
I watched as my Zspheres with RGB on turned a color that was selected.
Follow-up
Topology Points DO NOT follow the move tool matching the mesh (snapping to mesh) . I tested a very complex mesh see if I could place the topo points after I made them. But Zooming does help place them manually. So I must have been just zoomed in far enough where it looked like that in the video.

hey thanks jason for the inside look at some differences between the mac and pc im intrigued to find out how much better it handles then pc i have heard from several people 3.12 runs smoother and quicker even it comes to undoing and redoing a couple of million polys. how much different is the algorithm for zsphere generated meshes when it comes to adaptive and unified skin also does the project all seem more accurate with out vertexes shooting every which way when capturing underlying form. thanks for the preview though very much appreciated.
thanks again jason. ;)

hey jason thanks for showing more on zspheres for 3.12 it makes me happy too see that not once did your model shootout into the black abyss when modeling with them and im also glad too they fixed that touchy rotating problem with the joints they no longer rotate like crazy any more which makes it easier when adjusting poly flow. hope your mac finds its way back to you soon...

Hey,
Thanks again for the great vids. Also I was wondering, based on your video review for ZBrush 3.12 for the Mac, when PC users might get this update?
cannedmushrooms
01-01-09, 11:58 AM
Pixologic's timeline has always been sketchy (sucks)
Heck from 2.5 to 3.0 it took some 5 odd years.
Then the mac version took 2 more.
I'll put money on 2 yrs if not 3
It will take them that long to nurse the (we have to get the plugins for 3.12 working first) thing.
Then 3.5 will probably be for PC only again.
PC's really do blow.
I thought I would never say that but really without a good OS on them they lack the speed and stability of a mac.
I quit blaming Zbrush for issues now that I have been working on a MAC lately. Now I use my 3 billion GHZ 8 megs ram PC beast to answer my email. ;)
And my mac book pro for all my artwork.
Personally I find it sort of weird how I hardly see anything mentioned about new features or people requesting new features.
I could guess why but I'm a nice person ;)
Hi, Jason. Happy New Year!
Thanks for all your hard work in presenting this material. I downloaded the movies from 3D Total and they will play on Windows Media Player - but audio only. The video is a screen-saver graphic that changes with the audio. It sounds great, just no video. QuickTime and RealPlayer wouldn't run it at all, even with the latest downloads. Thoughts?
Thanks!

Try this its the codec
Most are WMV files (which according to microsoft require no codec)
but we all know how that goes.
I have had to install it allot in the past.
HERE for Codec (http://download.techsmith.com/tscc/tscc.exe) (pc only)
Here for codecs (http://download.techsmith.com/ensharpen/macuniversal/ensharpendecoder_universal.zip) (Macs)
Thanks, Jason. Any particular place I should save it too? I have an OS86 drive. ~S.~

just let it install to default on your pc
then reboot
Thanks, Jason. I have done this and have re-downloaded the movies but am still only able to hear audio. No video. Just some default, psychedelic screen-saver.

Things you could try snark is
1. update your media player
2. type wmv encoder in google it will lead you to microsofts wmv encoder which contains many things that might help.
3. I freeken love this player Here (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/mpc2kxp6490.zip?modtime=1142869788&big_mirror=0) its fast easy and stream lined for tutorial watching. Use the option for floating on top of all windows for best performance.
Thanks, Jason. I downloaded the VLC player and that is working fine.
I recently got a new machine and wondered if you could view the specs and recommend preference settings for ZBrush?
~S.~

Should run well under these setting.
Make sure you hit the test multithreading button first then change the settings and then Store config button.
You have a pretty highend machine but if you run out of polys up your
maxpolypermesh count a little past these settings.
Divide the average man model to a very high level and test it out.
You should go in to windows performace settings and adjust for performance also. (takes away all alpha trans. and visuals within vista)
I have pro 64 so I cant show you the screen shot of the vista 64 place to change it.
Thanks, Jason!
Hey, if my character has a set of special eyes with multiple parts for lens effects and caustics in close-up, how do you lay out UV's for that? How much of the UV quadrant should such 'close-up' eyes take?
~S.~
Hi, Jason.
Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing with the community.
I’ve been indexing your tutorials and I find a few have become corrupted and won’t play. Would you direct me to a link or links where I could download the following ZBrush movies as Windows Media Files (.wmv)?

Blender UV’s (Hi-Res) this one is just over an hour (462MB as an .avi)
Lesson 11 Digital Painting (parts 1 and 2) - your armored orc character on a cliff
