Great sky!

I never can seem to get all the colors in the sky that should be there. Maybe I just need to sit outside and stare at the clouds for a while to get the colors imprinted into my head!

:tu: :tu: :tu: GREAT WORK
Is this made in Zbrush 5.1 DeeVee?.

DeeVee
10-10-02, 01:27 PM
Yes! Zbrush 1.5.1 all the way :ex:
A few members have sent me emails asking for my method of creating skies. I have directed them to the QuickLinks as I usually do, but then I said what the heck and wipped up a quick Zscript for any one who may be interested. It will give the basic technique. It is up to the individual to work on the basics and develop their own methodology, If any one tries the script, and care to, they are welcomed to post their images here.

Nice, typical DeeVee sky, Joe. It will be interesting to see your hand at work and how you go about creating that slightly luminous look. :tu:

Wow, that looks amazing. And it accually came at the perfect time. Being as new as I am I could never do anything like that myself, but I was going to try my hand at painting.

I drove out in the middle of nowhere today.. and saw an amazing sunset, it inspired me. So I've been planing out a (what I hope to be) pretty detailed and cool painting. This sky will be a perfect addition. Your great :)

*EDIT*
Well scratch the sky Idea.. just as I posted this I tried to open the zscript.. and my plans were yet again foiled by this blasted demo. The last few tuts I've tried to play have been 1.51 only I assume because I get the message [Reset 1.51]. So I guess I'll have to try and tough it out myself.

Thanks Again Mr Braun ; your version works very fine !
Thank the sky's Kingdom :)
You are own saviour, for poor 1.23 users :)
How make this ? You have killed new functions? Ot there is a special function for exportation to the old version ?
And Bravo for DeeVee who adapt the traditionnal painting to this futurist program of Zbrush :)
Pilou =*O*=
Ps For DeeVee
Why take a 3D plan ?
It's not equal to fill the layer with color ?
(it's more speedy :)

MrBraun
10-11-02, 06:43 AM
Hehehe !! No Pilou!! I have replaced the new function !!! ;)
I dont know if the final result is equal to DeeVee zScript!!
I hope yes !!!
If Joe try the modified zscript, he can say if .... !!! :D :D :D

Thanks to all. Thank you Mr. B for helping out the 1.23b users. I hope they found it useful.
Frenchy you are quite right, it is just that I got accustomed to doing it this way for the following reasons. If the whole image is going to be sky or sea, the fill layer is great as it is indeed quicker. If you are doing a landscape or seascape and you only wish the top third or bottom third covered with a color then the plane3D is much more pratical, at least for me. As I mentioned adapt it to your style of working, this was only a demonstration of how I do it. What I am refering to is demonstrated in this image. If I wanted to do a reflection of the top image I find it easier to rotate the image so that it matches by doing it this way. I hope this explains my reasoning.

Joe

The Creator Of Clouds:
After you get a sky that you are satisfied with, you can modify it as indicated in the image below, all kinds of options are then available. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1034376594yic.jpg

Great scripts both Joe and Fouad, and some very attractive skies up there. :tu: :) :tu:

Frenchy: I spotted your comment re filling the layer instead of using a Plane 3D. I find 3D planes fiddly to align and scale, so like multiple layers, I avoid them where possible. I always use the fill layer method for starting my skies, irrespective of the final extent of sky required. I then paint in the clouds down to an appropriate level. I subsequently simply overpaint the lower unwanted portion of sky with the land and/or water. However I think DeeVee is right that if you want to do reflections by flipping the image, a 3D plane is a better bet. I've always separately painted my reflections so far though, so this has not been an issue for me. But as DeeVee said - adapt to your own likings - there are few hard and fast rules in painting in ZBrush, especially with such variable forms as cloudy skies.

shouldnt you be able to replace the 1.51 reset with a 1.22 reset or just remove that line altogether?

Oops, silly me! I usually prepare my lengthier comments offline and use copy/paste. On this ocasion, I failed to copy the first paragraph. So belatedly here it is. :o

That was interesting Joe. We both use very similar techniques, and yet produce quite different and I think signature results. I don't use a plane 3D, and sometimes use the simple brush instead of the paint brush, but that signifies nothing for the end result. I mostly use different alphas to you, and tend to work the canvas more with frequent cycles of painting and smudging. Also nowadays I often use the spray stroke for the initial laying down of the colour, with the colour slider set quite low; this gives quite subtle shades within the clouds before smudging which sometimes I find helpful. The biggest difference, and the one other than your often more "tropical" colour palette that I think most differentiates our skies, is that you use MRGB whereas I almost invariably use RGB. This has been very apparent in some of your more opalescent skies, but I hadn't realised you appear to use it exclusively. I think my method is better suited to my more northerly climes and more "water-colour" style of painting; yours is more suited to your hotter climate and your own vivid style of portraying your ravishing local beauty. It's quite amazing that it really all boils down to just relatively slight differences in the colour palette and whether or not one uses RGB or MRGB. :)

DeeVee

Thanks All.
FC: I just used the default settings, believe me I did not set out to use the MRGB exclusively. That is what just happened. One of the important things about ZScripts is exactly what you have pointed out. You are able to see exactly how the other person works and can then try to duplicate his method exactly, or modify it to suit yourself. Thanks for pointing out the difference, that is appreciated :ex:
Frenchy: I did not save a ZScript for the last image unfortunately. Since I was just fooling around, it never occured to me that anyone would be interested especially as there are so many techniques in Jaundels wonderful thread available from the quick links. If you do not find anything satisfactory there, I will try and do one for you. But honestly, the technique is the same for all of my latest sky and cloud scripts, all you have to do is to be brave and apply the colors. :) :D Let me know if you still wish me to try and do a short script for you and any others who may be intereted.
A zipped ZScript is included for anyone who is interested. :ex: :) :D

Joe.

No trouble at all MrB, I am happy that I could help in some small way. Most of these techniques that I use are available in the QuickLinks, and they were done for version 1.23b so no conversion is necessary. Thanks for converting these last 1.5.1 Scripts so that others can make use of them, that is very much appreciated.

Joe :) :D
