problem drawing tools along axis

I am having a difficult time drawing tools along the axis. When I edit using the symmetry buttons I am all over the place. This usually doesn't matter on simple primitives but on more complex zspere sculptures or other things it gets a bit annoying. Is there any way to hold shift down and make sure that when I drag the tool to the size I want it stays along the x and y axis.

There is no way to hold the object in a certain position, but since Shift snaps it to easily controled increments you should be able to get it to where you need it. You can place a marker to hold the place...

Yeah, I think I got it to where I want it. I first place the tool on the canvas and then rotate it without the transform button pressed. I check with the symmetry cursors on to see if the are aligned to my satisfaction and then I start going to town.
