lovely.
have you thought about giving the sphere with the map on it a sorched look on the places where it's missing the map? and maybe a 0 opacity so it really looks like a burned spherical map?

dunno if it's possible to do, but it seems like a good idea.

Ahhh... excellent!

Nice work, Sven. I especially like the subtle hints of the polyframe. Very nice. It looks like you have a few different materials on the globe. How did you do that?

Thanks for the replies,

Wenna, Frenchy and Kobi: The surface started green-gray... the map seen behind the sphere was actually applied to the sphere as a repeat pattern in one of a number of steps . The polyframe grids were applied in another.

Finally, the relief on certain parts comes from turning a stage of the texture map into an alpha and applied as displacement.

Chad, No multiple materials (yet).

It kind of a mess, but an interesting mess!
