I see these beautiful models with millions of polys. How do you animate a mesh that is so dense that you can't even see inside to place bones, not to mention how slow the mesh will be in any other program?

most would use the low poly wires and then a displacement map which is generated from your hig rez mesh.then render that displacement map over the low poly mesh and whala( i think it works on all platforms but I don't know ).two words practical giude download it and focus on the last few chapters of the zspheres http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=014968

yes, it's the combination of Low polygon cages, with high-res mapped out with normals and/or displacement maps is a key feature that make ZB2 an instant hit.
Animate with low res cages, and keep milion polygon level details.
