Hello. :)

I have a new blog at Pixologic.com called Sculpt. Paint. Create.

Sculpt. Paint. Create. is dedicated to the digital artist. I will be exploring new ways to use ZBrush, older ways of sculpting, and the fusion between digital art and traditional art that happens inside of ZBrush. I will also be featuring artist's tutorials from all over the World Wide Web.

My goal is to inspire and teach artists around the globe to sculpt, paint and create with ZBrush.

After watching NickZ's video tutorial on Veoh for sculpting a brick wall, I created this tutorial to explain a few of the tools he used and show an all ZBrush approach to doing the same thing.

In this tutorial, I explore several features: masks, wrap mode, snakehook brush, magnify brush and other great features of ZBrush 3.1.

I have added a tutorial on sculpting hair to Sculpt. Paint. Create. This is the first in the Sculpting Hair Series. There are more to come. :)

In this installment, we start out easy by sculpting a basic bob cut. However, in this basic hair style we will be able to explore one of the many possible ways to abstract and define hair.

In this tutorial we cover the use of the Clay brush and Slash 2 Brush.

fantastic work ryan! cast my eye over a couple of the videos and its a great place to touch up on things i really should already know. anyway! the wall tutorial was great and i remember struggling with hardbody sculpts. i might add that a great way of putting crusty bullet holes in walls is the blob tool on a high focus with the alt function a hard circular motion on your wacom is a great way to make wonderful holes in this great wall (thanks to nickZ and ryan) then with the faithful slash2 give it some cracks and hey pesto! thanks again! definately have this bookmarked!

Very cool to have a blog about ZBrush. Loving the entries and the videos that are up already but I hope you add some abstract thoughts on ZBrush. Videos, however cool and informative they are, make for a dictatorial style of communication. Please keep them coming but perhaps intersperse them with entries about upcoming art exhibitions (and why you find them relevant), your personal desire to see a specific effect created in ZBrush and your attempts to create it, your thoughts on modeling particularly difficult areas of the human body (references and all :)), highlighting the work of an artist (current or past), etc.

What I am getting at is a half page of text would be welcomed by me with an equal amount of enthusiasm as a video on modeling the ear would, as long as it contained a point, and the point reflected on the functions of ZBrush. Some food for thought, abstract or subject, as long as it relates to ZBrush, would be very nice.

Keep up the great work :tu: Looking forward to whatever may come later.

ryankingslien,
Those are super tutorials!!!:tu: :tu: :tu:
These teaching is very helpful for users! Thank you. In addition, I would like to ask a question. Please look at the following link. You should think of how to make this Skin effects, usually, if I use drag alpha to the model,I find that deal with the texture falloff area is more difficult ——Texture overlap or texture attenuation, it is easy to see the Artificial effect, I would like to listen to your recommendations, sorry my poor English.

Hello. I have another tutorial in the Artist's Series: Sculpting Hair. This tutorial shows you a very quick way to sculpt a braid and a quick look at the mechanics of a braid.

The next movie will show you how to use InsertMesh and Transpose to add and pose the braid with the DemoHead_Female.

By the way i wanted to suggest a wishlist on your blog .. something like what artists would like to see in the next version of Zbrush that could be beneficial in their everyday work and speed up their pipeline .. pretty much major things like transpose master ... the users of the whishlist can provide input like 1) transpose master 2 ) ....

this is gonna be world wide input from all artisits all over the place, maybe can bring 1 or 2 sparking ideas ... :)

thanks again

Hello,

I'm so grateful for these hair tutorials...just what I needed!

But I stumble over a problem right at the beginning.
When I try to use the clay brush I get unhairlike circles...even without any alpa, at a high resolution (more than 2 Mill) and with a mouse or a tablet both.
I don't know what I do wrong...these strands do not look like in your video! :o

Thank you very much!

ryankingslien
12-11-07, 03:37 PM
Tiger_Michel -

This is the result of your performance hitting the ceiling of your system's capabilities.

I would suggest two things.

First, delete your model's uvs by pressing Tool: Texture: Disable UVs.

Second, use Lazy mouse with a LazyStep setting of .1

Let me know if that helps. :)

r

Tiger_Michel
12-11-07, 03:51 PM
Thank you for your answer but your advise didn't help I fear...
UV wasn't enabled to begin with and with Lazy Mouse at 1 it looks now so:

I have a P Dual Core with 2G RAM...do you think it's not enough?

Tiger_Michel
12-11-07, 04:52 PM
I think I found a solution!
This is the clay brush on the hair model at a lower
resolution (around 130.000)

Looks much better now! :D

Hello Ryan,

thanks for your following up with us man, i have one question and i am really not sure if this is the right thread to post it so excuse me .. how can i combine a MatCap material with Basic Shader in Zbrush ?

one channel for MatCap and the other Channel Shader for BasicShader if you know what i mean ... i can send you a sample if you want me to but it is not created by me ... it is one of the things i hope oneday in Zbrush ... a Skin Material ready for the artist to start poly painting on, but infact if i have the Matcap and the BasicShader in one material then that would be all i need.

thanks allot

To help you learn to create digital maquettes, I have included a DemoMaquette_Female.ZTL. With extra edgeloops at the joints this model is designed for fast Transposing and to help you keep it simple.

Really nice to see this process evolving so nicely in Zbrush.

I'll have to pull up some of the old gang and compare then to now processes. Perhaps over the next few weeks I can find some time, might be interesting.... ;)

Something I think Ryan should have mentioned. If you don't use his sample character, your character structure will affect your results. ;)

Another excellent lil movie/article. The best part of it is the fact you mention you also test poses as you make them. I thought I was the only one to do stuff like that but it makes perfect sense considering its the best built in reference universally all artists have at their finger tips. Many thanks for sharing your reference collection on motion, with todays online video technology its definitely a great use for artists!!

Using reference is an important part of an artist's life and I have spent the last week or so really looking into ways that we can make the most out of the reference available to us as artists as well as find ways to grow as artists from it.

I hope you enjoy it and Happy ZBrushing!

ZBrush_skull_steps1-2_title.jpg (http://www.pixologic.com/blogs/ryan/2008/02/26/sculpting-skull-steps-1-2/)

Hello. Just uploaded a new movie showing a fast way to build a basic human skull shape that fits with Freedom of Teach's upcoming Artist's Busts. This is one part in a series of videos that will, hopefully, provide a path for artists looking to learn more about anatomy and structure.

Happy ZBrushing,

Ryan

Nice tutorial :tu:
Curious as we are, we want to explore everyting there is. I made oilpaint from the most nice pigments there are. The smell of the Venetian terpentine mixed with bee-wax made me dizzy and brought me the things I wanted to paint. Hmmm, computer...

Thank you again Ryan for all these excellent blog entries :tu: Very helpful and inspirational. Love the descriptions and observations that go with each entry and video. Please excuse my previous comment. I could not quite express myself as I wanted to at the time, but rest assured, if you seemed dictatorial then you are now our most beloved dictator ;)

These are great, espcially the brick wall, but how about showing us how to export to another 3D package to use in our animations or 3D environments.Keep up the god work!

Is the blog deprecated? There hasn't been any update for a while and Ryan seems to be over at gnomology lately...

Is the blog deprecated? There hasn't been any update for a while and Ryan seems to be over at gnomology lately...Hey feureau, The blog has not been updated. I can not speak to Pixologic's next step with it but I am sure it will be a good one.

Paul from Pixologic has started a new thread called "Did you know that?" (http://209.132.96.165/zbc/showthread.php?t=61676) which carries forward the tradition of short but insightful clips.

Gnomonology does have a blog (http://gnomonology.com/blog/) but it will not have content like Sculpt.Paint.Create till after we make some changes to Gnomonology. After that, it will be my own personal assault on education. :)

All the best,

Ryan

are they buried within the forum? if so...my word searches don't come up with anything
i like the new media center and it's ultra high profile but the sculpt paint create vids were great for ANYONE just starting out or needed quick refresher...if it is gone...

There are some speed sculpts in there but not the informative vids that I am trying to get my hands on like the planes of the head one.

Any chance of a re-upload :)

Hey guys, I have moved a good bit of the content to my new blog here:

Ryan's Blog (http://www.ryankingslien.com/?cat=42)

It is far from finished and a good portion of the videos were lost in the ether but after the release of ZBrush 3.5 I'll be back to work on it with as many information-packed videos as possible.

Regarding the planes of the head one, I will absolutely be redoing those videos. I have learned a great deal in the ensuing years.

Best,

Ryan
