Great work man you have a nice touch for the anatomy. You use a 3Dsphere or over?
Keep it up man!!

Extreeeeeeemely late reply, but yes, i used the standard Zsphere head set up
I started this work on my pc, but I got a new pc, put the work over to that one, and made progress...then the new pc got taken away (and i still haven't gotten it back yet). So, since it's taking so long to get the newpc back, i've just decided to continue working with my saved version on the pc I started this on. It's sad that I have to start working back on one of the older versions of the model because I don't have the new pc that has the model with the most recent changes, but hey, that's life, right?
Look for more updates to this portrait soon.

Good work on this portrait. It would be nice to see a picture of the original to see how close you are getting.
Started over on the portrait. Still working on it. I guess it's coming along but right now i'm fustrated with it a bit and need to take a step back and leave it alone for awhile. any suggestions on this one would be much appreciated.

looking great!! my only suggestion would be to lower the ears, they look a bit high. overall it looks great, you did some nice work around the corners of the mouth and the chin.
tiny update, you probably can't see much of a difference (but it's there)
nprog61.JPG
still a lot more work to go on this one...*sighs* a whole lot more.
still working on it...looking at the work being posted here at zbc of late just makes me keep trying harder to complete this and work more towards improving my skills.
I just wanted to see how my model looked with a little color on it, so i threw on sokar's skin shader and i liked the result...just thought i'd share.
mouth_shader.JPG
alas, much much MUCH more work to do on the 'er
the result of tonight's work on it...i'll finish this eventually...easy does it. I should have been asleep almost 6 hours ago. I'm off to bed.

tex1.jpg
i was tired of looking at a grey model while sculpting today, so i played around with texturing...this is actually the first thing i've ever done with texturing in z... the texture isn't final. but i think it looks rather nice for the 2 minutes i spent painting it. I still need to work on the eyes, ears, and overall headshape. then go back in and fix anything anatomically wrong (because i'm working from a photo. I'm not using a template, but rather "looking at the photo, then working in zbrush, looking at the photo, then working in zbrush", it's an observational excercise) then i'll attempt all the fine little details in pm. ...as for hair? who know's how that's gonna get done, lol.

damned outstanding model there!!! You need to be giving me lessons!! I am going to dl the script you just posted on your other thread...I am very intrigued by how you are accomplishing your lips....looking forward to more updates.
ron
thanks a lot ron. that means a lot coming from you seeing as how i'm always just always loving your work.
as for the lips, let me check thru my zscripts...when i first started this model, it was my intention to make a series of zscripts so people could see the modeling from beginning to end. but i forgot to record them after about the second session. I'll watch the them to see how far I got in those ones, because one or the other may show the how i got the lips done for the most part. if they do, i'll post the script. if not, then i'll try to do a 'lips' zscript. a lot of people told me they liked the lips, but they look just like everyone else's on zbc to me, heh.
Don't sweat it,abxy...a realistic human model, warts and all,...well, forget the warts,is a sort of "holy grail" for most people involved in modeling.
Its very difficult to make one ,that said ,i like yours , it realy looks like a living
being, struggling with a weight problem i would say, looking at his face !
Perhaps working on some more cartoon like characters, can free the mind from
the urge to be " to realistic and strict in its proportion" ..well it works for me :)
jantim
this thread isn't over until this model gets done. ...i'm taking a break from my goblin model and back working on the portrait. I've learned the usefulness of perspective, and yeah, us windows users need perspective mode modeling. it'd been a big help. anyhoo, here's what i have at the end of tonight's session:
update1230.jpg
edit: it just occurred to me that you all probably don't notice the updates i'm making...but i do. I'm using a photo sitting on my desk as a reference the same way Antropus used a photo as a reference for his Picasso portrait, so i'm trying to get the portrait to resemble the photo more, and i seem to be getting closer while a lot of little tweaks.

hi,
i'm growing a little fustrated with modelling at the moment, i just can't seem to nail 'it' ...i can't describe it exactly, but something is definiately wrong/missing, and it's completely wrong/missing... can you all give me some feedback as to what's off?
...please, be as brutal as possible.

Hi abxy.. hmmmm i have been staring myself blind.. hmm, i would say that, to me it looks like ,, //what you call the skin between the mouth and the nose.. // is going through the nose, instead of following up the nostrils... //English is not my main language :) so i try to explain it the best i can//... somehow it looks like the bottom of the nose isen't a part of the face, but attached to the face..hope you can understand what i mean :) otherwise ,, i have seen the other pictures of your work.. and overall, it's a very fine model..great work.. gretz from andy.. p.s. i know how it is to sit and stare yourself blind at a picture, and can't find the // missing link :)//

You can get a better idea of your subject by making a temporary texture with eyebrows, and softly diffused gray to imitate eyelashes.
If you sculpt and manipulate those areas, just redraw your reference texture.
If you think about, a person looks totally different if his/her eyebrows or lashes are shaved off.

The lips are great, the eyes are nice, the nose is almost there. I find making a slight crease where the top of the nostril meets the cheeks increases realism greatly - The nasolabial folds are the deep folds which run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth. This relly boosts realism, but if you make it to extreme it looks like a sneer, women tend to have fairly subtle folds where as men tend to have prominent ones. This is one detail which can make your models look masculine or feminine. Also I think the forehead could be higher on your head. proportions sem slightly off. But the model has some great features. Lips and mouth corners are great.

the corners of the mouth could use a little more depth, and the brow needs more definition to show that there is bone up there, and i think the biggest thing is that the whole upper half of the head is too small in hight and width and the eyes are a little big, you should be able to fit 5 eyes across the skull so the skull near the ears needs to come out, and perhaps the ears should tilt forward a bit more, lastly a little more bone definition on the bridge of the nose and between the eyes. great model so far!

Sorry, I didn't look at the other images before posting my reply but I see that they have some nice things going on around the nose. Ignore my comment on nasolabial folds. Seems like you have this down in other versions.
alright then kellerrific, based on what you've seen, am I modelling a male or female...cause if you're thinkin' male, then you were right the first time, i need to work on it.
Thank you everyone. i truly truly mean it. every single one of the comments you all have made will be taken into consideration, and I will work on improving the model (as soon as i get home, i'm still at work).
i'll post another shot, probably on monday, so that you all can pick at the model some more to help me after i've incorporated your suggestions.
by the way, when i finish this, since i'm bad at tutorials and haven't been saving my zscripts, i'm giving this model away to the zbc community, all background geometry, textures, materials, and light setup included.
thanks again guys.
edit: also, if you see something you didn't catch the first time, please, tell me what else you've spotted that needs to be worked on.
posting a shot just for fun; i'm still working on it. It still has a long time to go before i'm even close to being done.

Looking better with every post, Abxy!! Keep it up!

Best thing to do when you "can't see the subject" is to turn it upside down along with the model. It forces your brain to work differantly.
Nice work :tu:

This doesn't represent any progress at all. I'm just experimenting with a multimarker enhancement that a friend is working on. The enhancement allows me to save a multimarkered tool without having to combine everything into a single mesh. This means that I can work with a multimarkered tool across multiple zbrush sessions:D. Another big plus is that i can work on each tool in the multimarkered tool seperately in other zbrush sessions and that object is updated in the multimarkered version.
So with that said, here are some eyeball place holders that i've created so that I can better evaluate the progress of the head model.
exampleeyes2.JPG
Unfortunately I can't get the multimarkered object drawn on the canvas with perspective distortion, so that's something I need a solution for. Cool and extremely useful multimarker enhancement nonetheless.

I think the eyes give this a lot more character. It definitely has an emotive quality to it, and the eyes say it all IMO.
I think my favorite part of the whole head is the mouth and neck region. Very nicely done.
About the multi-marker problem. Can you make a polymesh of it? Or export it out as an .obj? Maybe that would help.

I can't see a difference in the model, but the skin tone is a lot better. Only thing I see that is "odd" is the lack of bump. But I assume you're rendering this in Zbrush, or at least that's what it looks like, so no bump is understandable. I would say the same with the specular highlights, but again, I think this is due to the Zbrush render, for now. Also maybe try and add some more red to his lips. Right now it looks a bit like he's on the cold side, or worse, dead!
It still looks good though. I'd definitely like to see your texturing process. :tu:

I have to agree on the coloring, I like it as a base for texturing the skin to a more realistic coloring. I would like to see some more detail in the skin though. Not sure though if you are ready to do that yet or still want to tweak some more before going there.
how is that mm enhanced script your friend is working on coming along?

it´s so realistic (maybe Antropus tutorial??:D ). But the ear are too rigids, the face is so real but the ears no. It´s only my opinion.
I hope to see your progress.

Man, the skin tone looks amazing! I'm looking forward to see this model completed :tu:
Don't stop man, keep it up!

Oh. my. freaking. goodness.
Thee Antropus himself has made a post in the thread!!
*bows*
thankyou for your post man.
I *just* started working on the skin texture actually. I haven't put too much time into it yet, and it has a tremendously long way to go. Every time I start to work on it I grow extremely disatisfied with the model's form. So currently, everyday after work for a few minutes, I'm working on the model's form. i'll come back to texturing later.

It would be cool if you posted your skin shader and lighting setup from that last shot :)
I'm with Kris. Nice tone and feel to it.
found this sitting on the harddrive; forgot to post this pic a week ago when I posted the other one...better late than never I guess. And it's always good to get more feedback to help me progress in the right direction I figure.

I love the sculpting of this face but something with the eyes looks wrong.
Maybe I'm wrong but it seems the skin is not following the eyeball. Just a bit more rounding in the upper eyelid and a bit less at the lower should make the eye more natural for me. It looks a bit 'wrong side up'. But every eye is different and maybe it's ok for you. Again, the mouth, nose and the lowerparts make this face more than beautiful!
I completely agree about the eyes area; i'll work on it tonight. thanks for the comment mate :D :tu:
I sincerely appreciate it.
Abxy, The subtleties in the sculpting are beautiful. I always go cartoony, so when I see a work that has such precise sculpting, I get jealous...:D
The lighting in the last image is very nice also. I can't wait to see where this goes.

This might be the most sensuous CG mouth I've seen. Really well modeled! That last shot (the 3/4 view) makes me wonder if there is enough volume to the back of the head... or if the ear is positioned too far back. Endeavor to persevere!
agreed. the ears are sucky and in the wrong place. and the volume of the head isn't correct. I'm going to fix both of those things.
many thanks for pointing those two issues out. if you spot anything else, please please PLEASE let me know. you all probably don't know how much i appreciate your suggestions and comments, but it always just puts a smile on my face from ear to ear. you all are what help me to improve.
after realizing a lot of critical mistakes I made with this head model that seem virtually unfixable, i've decided to start over. if anyone would like the model to toy around with on their own, just say so and it's yours.

ABXY, I cannot understand why you can't go on with this nice head. Take the move-tool and push a bit.If you don't shoot you always miss. The power of ZB is the easy way to change a shape.
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/attachment.php?attachmentid=5516
If you need some help with a problem just say it.
i decided that it would be better to finish it and have it not to my satisfaction than just to completely abandon it and sum it up as time wasted.
so anyway, here's a pic. please give some feedback and suggestions. pretty please?
skinthusfar_2.jpg
(sorry for the large size of the picture)
I'm doing a little more texture work although I do plan to go back in and do a some things that I want to but didn't do yet in the form.
Because i made the mistake of starting the texture before my form was completed I can't add eyes or hair at this point without the risk of sabatage of my current texture. so eyes and hair will have to be the last things to add. I'm learning a lot with this model, and my next one should greatly benefit from all the lessons i'm learning through mistakes with this one. :)

abxy, nice to see you back with this model. I realy like this face without expression but with a lot of spirit. A kind of not-smiling MonaLisa. It looks like waiting for something, maybe asking to be finished.

This is beautiful. As a newbie to both sculpting and ZB, I find realistic and restrained work like this to be both inspirational and instructive. Thank you. The head has a slightly androgynous feel to it, which I find appealing .. one has to think about the picture and study it.
C&C .. Bas' comment about the lower eyelids is still true. Face-on like this the curve should be shallower maybe. Philtrum looks a tad pronounced where it meets the septum. And lips maybe tilt the model too far to the feminine side (that's not a crit, I was just rather taken with the original androgyny).
Masterful.

still figuring out the best way to create the eyes; that one isn't final.
I only get to work on this model about an hour a week now :(

It takes long, but it render great..
take your time, its the best way to do amazing work.
About eyes, dont make too white ones... Usually, white area is a bit blue and red on side, because of veines...
You can also fake a bit eyes shadows, by painting upper eye border, in black, with very small intensity, it will add a lot a relief...
Superb texturing work...

Awesome .I like the modeling in the eye and mouth area seems very realistic.
Getting better and better.Very nice progress:tu:
yes yes, I know you all have seen this over and over...and it seems like I just keep posting pictures of the same thing over and over again. I know you're tired of it. So am I. So, I decided to just finish this thing within the next few days. And before I start to go 'wild' on this, i'm just looking for some suggestions in reference to the modelling, texturing, materials, lighting, and rendering...suggestions on everything. Don't worry about the ears not having color, hair is probably gonna cover them in the final image anyway. Final image will have a body, and background if I can help it.
zsphere_head070205.jpg
There are a few minor things I'd like to fix and work on just looking at it right now, but i'm looking for you all's suggestions.
cheers!
Happy Zbrushing.
Maybe work on a Specularity Map?
I think it also could need micro Detail like Pores and smallest Wrinkles.
Apart from that, it's excellent!
