I'm not really into modeling monsters, but when you add "Silly" into the mix I'm in!

What do scary people do on the weekends?

My Idea: Dracula and Frankenstein watching sunday night football on the sofa.
Assets need: Two scary monsters and a bunch of silly props.

Concept: Dracula on the left sucking down iv bags of blood with gaint foam finger. Frank on the right celebrating his teams victory.

Hi, i like the way you developed your head sculpt from ZSpheres. Could i request you to post your ZSphere layout without the adaptice skin turned on. Thanks.

Ha ha...it looks like my buddy and me every weekend watching football. I'm very happy for this contest, because it is causing people to model more cartoonish images, which I prefer over the more realistic monster/ghoul images usually posted around here. I hope you finish this, I would like to save a copy on my PC...by the way, what is your favorite team?

The Sofa:
I get a lot of people always telling me Zbrush is only good at making monsters, so here's a quick WIP of me make a sofa from a simple box I created in 3ds Max. I will add more detail later when I place Frank and Dracula on the sofa.

I personally prefer the idea of no headgear for Frank. Not adding it makes more of a contrast with Dracula's (who's blood pouches are a brilliant spoof of the classic beer cans). And as you drew him in the concept sketch, Frank looks like a classic frat boy jock-type. The extra headgear would be overkill, I think.

S.P.,

What can I say, terrific concept and execution so far. So many solid entrys its going to be soo hard to decide, that said regardless this piece is looking fantastic!!!! I tend to agree about the face mask for o'l frankie that even though the idea is interesting it seems to take away from the overall sculpt which rocks. Maybe just painting his face with team colors would be enough, just a thought. Keep the great work!! :tu: :tu:

I have gotten this as well. And usually when I sculpt a specific way. Were you using the pinch brush? With a pointy alpha (like #39)?. I found that when I was even using the standard brush, with #39 aplha and in Subtractive mode, this would happen. Or the software would crash. I, of course, have no solution for you, but if multiple users are having the same problem, we can pass it on to ZB for a review.

Your work is looking cool. Keep it up!

S.P.

I've seen some similiar things when 3.0 initially came out due to a subdivision corruption or when bringing in a model from 2.0, alternating the size helped going down in negative increments or positive ones depending though not sure it would help what you got here. Can you say when this actually occurred and how it came about for yourself? I've yet to play with 3.1 so not sure if this is something exclusive to it compared to 3.0. More info the better, thanks much.

Love the expression. Wow Zbrush 3.1 is drawing out like a new talent pool thats for sure. I could not even imagine seeing this type of work a yr ago. Great job.
You must be retopoing every piece because your edges are so clean.

Sasq if your still getting your save error check you temp directory I bet its full.
Anytime you run out of virtual ram in the middle of a save you will get that crash thing. Also check your drive you saveing to make sure you dont run out in the middle of a save or you will loose everything with no warning.

:tu: This is incredible work.:tu:

I feel out of place making a suggestion, but some food for thought:

I realize that it is implied they are watching a game on tv, but maybe it would unify the scene (and give Frankie a focus for his eye) if you showed a tv or the shape of one in the foreground... of course the low level bottom-lit effect tv-type lighting would enhance the spookiness. - - a spider web here and there and maybe even a bat - -

This would make a great perennial Halloween poster - I used to do work for a company that did the posters you see on the flip-racks in WalMarts, etc. They would have jumped on this one like chickens on corn! ;) With a little research you could probably find a sponsor like a college team or even an advertiser - that's where the real bucks are.

Looking forward to seeing more of this - it is great to get an inside look at your process.

So I came up with the idea of adding a kid in the background startled by the two monsters on the sofa as she was getting a late night snack. But after doing some tests and placing her in the scene I felt it took any from the main characters.

Anyway wasted a few hours on her but I figured I'd share my WIP of the sculpt.

Hope you like. Maybe I'll use her for another project.

Whatta trip!

I just realized that the couch is lifting drunkula up because Frankie is squishing down his end... funneee!

The only suggestion I have (realizing this is not final art) is that the spider webs don't come off too well, kinda look more like thick string... maybe thinner and some structure like a web... my ol' horse here has webs between his back legs ('cause he hasn't moved in so long  )

This one's a definite TOUCHDOWN!! Love how its taking shape, way to work this concept and build it up. It's definite ending the 4th quarter and it appears your going for more points and not running out the clock with this one. Enough of my lame attempted football analogies. Awesome stuff.

Would love to see the girl in there somewhere if you can, reckon it would be fitting with the theme, but either way its top top quality.

Am just starting to try and get a foothold on the topology aspect of zbrush, the zsphere models you made with the little girl, such as the teddy bear and the girl, do you go straight for topologising them straight from spheres or create a skin first then top them? Or not top them at all?

Look forward to more! :tu:

Yeah I would have liked to put the kid in, but I got to stay true to my original concept. She just didn’t work well with the two other characters. Its always hard to cut stuff, but its all about the final render not just one nice sculpt.

As for creating her. No retopo was used. Normally I would retopo the model. She was a rush job (made her in a few hours) and after doing some test renders I had a feeling I would not be using here in the final scene.

cinnamonstix
10-30-07, 02:09 PM
I'm feeling awful "pouty" about the girl, but I still love it. She seems to make the theme true to the scared silly part. However, you are a brilliant artist and I totally trust your decision.

The characters are so fun!! I love the ideas for props you have come up with. Can't wait to see the final. The scene is already alive-- in just your wips. I feel drawn inside the home to look at everything that's going on. I don't want to miss anything...as even the rubbish on the floor is very interesting to this scene!

Here it is! Thanks to all for the feedback and keeping me going. This was a ton of work, but I learned a ton.

Final specs:
-Over 30 million polys. Had to be rendered in 3 different parts and multiple shader passes.
-Zbrush was used almost exclusively with the exception of a few primitive shapes for props made in 3dsMax (see Wip thread).
-Photoshop was used for color correction and textures (every object in final render is 3d).

Also I'm going to add a few close-ups because a 200k render doesn't show half the detail I put into this.
Enjoy!

Very cool. I like the blue hue in the lighting coming off of the TV, very convincing.

Still, it's a shame to see all of those Cheese Toes on the floor going to waste. :D

Greg,

I'm almost speechless but managed to conjure up a few words of praise :D

IMHO, you blew this one out of the water, guy! I'm so glad you posted the close-ups as well, because you are right--you put so much into this!
(I laughed when I saw the cheese toes residue on the couch), haha.
So many details. The baby monsters in the frame! YOU ROCK!

I'll chunk my copy of Zbrush out the window if you don't win. Kidding of course. I must learn so hopefully I can become as good as you someday! Inspiring is an understatement.

You have totally pulled this off and shows not only how amazingly talented and creative you are --but also how powerful of a tool Zbrush is for artists (and artists in tow).

The lighting is so believable! ..blah blah. I've rambled enough! Exhaling now. Good luck!! Had much fun watching.

Glorious work.

Instead of a write up, please consider a video tutorial series. You have a mastery of ZBrush (and illustration techniques in general) which are too valuable to be abbreviated by screenshots and captions.

Hopefully you'll post much more of your work at ZBC, if this image doesn't catapult you into a major hollywood, or games studio, and make you too busy. :D

Congratulations on your inspiring final render.

Wow. I'm glad I was too busy at work to complete my entry, cuz I wouldn't want to compete with THAT.

Amazing sculpts, but I'm most impressed by the textures and stuff...especially since I haven't really learned how to do those yet myself. Your final render was awesome. I hope you win the Cintiq!

GREAT work Greg :tu::tu::tu::tu::tu:

You've REALLY captured the essence of the 'Scared Silly' theme here :)

Loving all the little details you've put into this piece, and you must be justifiably proud of your efforts, what with all the retopo etc in this captivating image !!

cheers

Hey Grogory, congrats on your win, I thought this deserved first from effort, skill, and brilliant attention to detail. It was just too close at the end there with so many great images made.

I'd love to watch over your shoulder and see you work an image from start to finish.
Very well done!!

amazing work, i also would love to see a video tutorial of u showing some of the techniques u use, e.g. retopo over zspheres, i didnt know u could do that. Plus rendering all these elements in zbrush and putting them together, anyways, ur probably exhausted from this great effort, congrats mate :tu:

Nothing special. Running XP, 3.something Pentium, 2 gigs of ram and a 512mb video card.

But I think I'm pushing it to its limits. Lately I've been getting this error everytime I save...
WTF01.jpg
WTF, anyone know why its doing this? I've lost a ton of work.
have you mannaged to fix this problem cause this is really getting on my nervs and i can't finish any of my projects... -_-

dustbin1_uk

I used to get this error when I exported to Blender 3D and then import again.

it was the fact that I did not store the morph target in blender on import so all the indexing was out.

Not sure if it's the same issue as you.

VenomBG
07-29-08, 10:42 AM
ok ,but any ideas how to fix it... i've been all over the internet and can't find any solution...

Did u try to use the repair feature in ZBrush 3 and 3.1 installs ?
Solved many bugs and speed issues for me. Seem like the installation has been corrupted.;)
