The Winners have been announced! Click here (http://209.132.96.165/zbc/showthread.php?t=53610) to see the results.

The Challenge

Pixologic is proud to announce our first official contest (sponsored by Wacom)! We plan to have many more such competitions in the future, each with its own theme and focusing on the use of ZBrush. All registered ZBrush users are encouraged to enter, whether running ZBrush 2 or 3.

Since Halloween is just around the corner, we’ve decided to hold this competition in lieu of our traditional event. Your challenge is to conceive and create an image that fits within the "Scared Silly" theme. The idea here is to flex your creative muscles a bit and mix in humor.

The image that you create can be an amusing take on a recognizable character’s appearance, put a monster in a funny situation, show a comic side of trick-or-treating – anything you can imagine that would make a Halloween theme funny.

Images may be 3D renders, 2D paintings, or a combination of both (thanks to ZBrush’s 2.5D technology).

Don’t forget about elements such as composition, lighting, environment and atmosphere, expression and body language. The entries will be judged by the entire ZBC community, which includes professional artists and hobbyists alike. Impress them! Images will be judged by the community based on three requirements:

Success in portraying the contest theme.
Quality of the finished artwork.
Displayed ZBrush skill in the areas of modeling, texturing, painting and/or rendering.
The Prizes

Grand Prize: Cintiq 21UX (http://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/Cintiq_21UX_for_US_except_Cal_P786C48.cfm). This is the ultimate way to use a pen with ZBrush. Draw directly on the 21" (resolution of 1600x1200) display for increased control, comfort and productivity. Scott Spencer wrote about the experience of working with a Cintiq here (http://www.highend3d.com/articles/reviews/16-1.html). Prize value: $2,499.

First Prize: Intuos3 Special Edition 9x12 (http://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/Intuos3_9x12_Special_Edition_P1223C83.cfm). In celebration of Wacom’s 25th anniversary, the Intuos3 Special Edition includes several great extras and sports a unique black color scheme. The 9x12 size is valued at $489.

Second Prize: Intuos3 Special Edition 6x8 (http://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/Intuos3_6x8_Special_Edition_P1221C83.cfm). Like the first prize Special Edition, this tablet includes an additional Classic pen, transparent overlay, and accessory kit. The 6x8 size is valued at $369.

How the Contest will be Run

Since ZBC is geared toward helping artists learn from each other, this challenge will be a WIP (Work in Progress) challenge.

All entrants will be required to create a new thread in the Scared Silly Contest Forum (http://209.132.96.165/zbc/forumdisplay.php?f=85), beginning with an original concept sketch or description and then showing the ongoing progression of the entry until the finished image is finally posted before contest end. All members of the ZBC community are encouraged to participate in the thread, offering constructive feedback and encouragement.

All software used in the execution of this contest must be legally licensed copies.
The thread’s title must be: "Scared Silly Entry by Your Name". For example: "Scared Silly Entry by John Smith". First and last names must be given.
The first post in the thread must show a concept sketch and/or detailed description of the image.
Submit your WIP images on a regular basis. This can include test renders, samples of scene elements as they’re completed, character turnaround movies, etc.
It is highly recommended that you participate in the ZBC community by critiquing other challenger's works in the respective threads and responding to the comments of others in your own thread.
Submit your final entry before the end of the challenge on 2 November 2007. Absolutely no late entries will be accepted. Information for how to submit your final image will be made available to all entrants in the last week of the competition.
Failure to present WIP images and interact with the ZBC community (including other entrants) can result in disqualification, preventing the artist from being included for final judging.
After the deadline, all qualified entrants will be showcased in a single new thread. The ZBC community will then have the opportunity to vote for the winning images (one vote per member). Winners will be announced following the voting process.
All winners will be required to write "making of" articles accompanied with high resolution work-in-progress stills within one week of contest end, which will then be featured at ZBrushCentral and on the Pixologic website.
Contest Official Rules

One thread/entry per artist. Should you change your concept, the new work must continue within the original thread.
All ZBrushCentral members with a registered copy of ZBrush (version 2 or 3) may enter the Scared Silly Challenge. ZBC membership is free of charge.
Employees of sponsors may participate in the WIP phase of the challenge, but are not eligible for the contest. Such participation must be labeled as "Non-Entry" in each post in which a WIP image is shown.
The emphasis of the challenge is on the use of ZBrush. The majority of the effort put into creating the image should be done with ZBrush. (Other software packages may be used in the creation of the image, provided that their use is clearly stated and that the majority of the work is done within ZBrush.)
Pre-fabricated models may only be used as a starting point and their use must be clearly disclosed. Terrain and foliage generation software is allowed also. Keep in mind that the contest is being judged by your peers. Your image will achieve better impact if you create all elements from scratch than if you resort to using anything that is recognizably pre-fabricated.
The use of copyrighted elements is not allowed.
Any image deemed to be the same or similar (in whole or in part) to one currently published by yourself or any other artist will be disqualified.
Any image deemed to contain content that depicts explicit acts that are overtly violent, sexual, cruel or brutal will be disqualified. Such entries may, at Pixologic’s sole discretion, be closed during the WIP phases of the contest.
The challenge runs four weeks, from September 28, 2007 - November 2, 2007. No late entries will be accepted.
Judging runs November 5, 2007 – November 11, 2007.
Winners will be announced on November 16, 2007.
All dates are based on the U.S. Pacific Time zone. Entry and voting deadlines are at 11:59 pm on the date in question.
To be eligible for prizes, all winning contestants must provide detailed "making of" articles for the Pixologic website. These articles must be provided to Pixologic between the dates of November 16, 2007 and November 23, 2007. Instructions for their delivery will be made available at time.
The sponsors of this contest (Pixologic and Wacom) may use final or winning artwork for marketing purposes in the context of the challenge, and agree to clearly credit the artist if any such artwork is used.
All entries are the property of the respective artists. Pixologic may use submitted artwork for the purpose of promoting this or future contests. If any artist's work is used in this manner, the artist will be credited.
Disclaimer: Pixologic reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any entry that does not adhere to the spirit of ZBrushCentral and these rules. If you do not agree with any of the above terms and conditions, please do not enter the Scared Silly Challenge.

Above all, have fun! We look forward to seeing what you scare up. :)

Excellent, Aurick! :)

I was actually going to issue a 'challenge' to all the great artists around here myself! The Halloween season is my favorite time of the year.

But this - and with Wacom sponsoring - is just superior!!

I'm brand new to ZBrush, and only up to page 45 of the Practical Manual, so I seriously doubt I'll be able to produce anything that soon, but I'll be very satisfied just to sit back and watch all the ghoulish fun around here!!

And with a humorous twist, too! Knock 'em dead, guys!

Hi! No FAQ-Section for this? So I ask here: is it allowed to make a Picture of an existing Character (from Film, Book, etc.) or applies this as lack of skill in Creativity?

Hi! No FAQ-Section for this? So I ask here: is it allowed to make a Picture of an existing Character (from Film, Book, etc.) or applies this as lack of skill in Creativity?See items 7 & 8 of the Official Rules section.

The exception would be something like Dracula or Frankenstein's Monster. Those characters are iconic with the original source material being public domain, and so would be fair game. But you would need to be especially careful to not use the character in a way that has been done before.

Cool idea, this is a lot like CG Talk's challenges which I like.

One question: Does this have to be a "ZBrush only" render?
In other words, is importing a mesh from an outside program or rendering such images outside of ZBrush allowed?

Oops, I've read the rules again and I guess I've answered my own question to a degree, but when it says "majority", to what degree does that mean?

CintiQ! Drool! I'm in, and thanks for this opportunity Pixologic!

Question: Clarification regarding "majority of work in ZB". Creating the base mesh's in another application, but sculpting/paint/texture/pose/render in ZB, and post processing in photoshop is A)accepteble, and B) won't incur any bias whatsoever in the judging?

Thanks!

Yes, that would put the majority of the work within ZBrush. Thanks for checking. :)

Blimey! A Cintiq and Special Edition Wacoms.
Nice that the halloween challanges become official. After all these years.

But I'm not sure if I can produce an award winning pic in such a short time. What with all the hubub of modern life zooming past.

Qs:
How much of a non ZBrushness is allowed on these images? I mean, like Maya base detailed in ZB and rendered in maya with the bells and whistles using normal map like alex alvarez's scary jester guy? then Photoshopped? To ad more details and background etc? I know this sorta workflow's been asked but, I'm not sure if a majority of zbrushness established there on alex's workflow.
Or does it have to be ZB render? is innudeability enforced? (To put it bluntly, no porn?) How violent and gore can a sillyfully "scary" halloween entry be? (I mean, them monstermaker pic over at the beta forum is really spooky to me, but we are in the age of movies like Saw getting parodied in that sorta funny Movie that aims to scare people)
And something for our poser friends: Can poser figures be used in there?

Scared silly scared silly... hmm....

Sorry for the combo Q's I'm too excited. :D Too much coffee today.

PS> Can we have an entry thread without the title "Scared Silly by somebody somebody etc."? I mean, after several entry, they're all titled "Scared Silly by somebody somebody etc."

Go with the largest size that you can manage for your finished image. When it comes time to do the judging, we'll provide links to the high resolution version so that people can really see the detail.

SOunds fun and Id like to enter but have a question. You put alot of emphasis on having a licensed registered version of ZBrush so I assume this will be checked for any winners, which is valid, however I dont own ZBrush myself at home (my computer can't run it, its old and sad). I will be doing all the work on the computers at Gnomon where I am currently taking classes. Would this be ok or do we need to have our own purchased license of the software to enter?

So a quick question does this mean that it has to feature Iconic halloween characters or like for example in Costa Rica where I live they have a lot of Monster fables not related to halloween persay but Monsters none the less would they be acceptable?

monstermaker
10-01-07, 08:57 AM
Darn, I thought I would get ahead of the game and already did a couple of Halloween images knowing that you always have a Halloween thread at this time. I guess I'll just post them later in a different thread.
Actually I did them for a Halloween based art show that I and several other ZBrushers are involved in along with about 60 artists of all kinds. I guess I shouldn't post my work until that show opens anyways.
I must say I'm glad to see ZBC doing this and I will be closely following the progress

There is no requirement to use iconic characters. You can use any character that is in the public domain, or make something up completely. So using your country's monster fables is perfectly fine.

Hi Aurick! Quick question, What are the rules concerning using premade assets in our entries?
By this I mean does the entry piece have to be entirely created after the start of the contest or can we incorporate older models or current WIPs into a new piece for the contest?
I was going to do a halloween themed pic for fun with a current wip before the contest started and I was wondering if i could use that wip model as the starting place for an entry?
Thanks for your time. :)

The problem is that what you want to do essentially gives you a head start on the other entrants. We can't allow this.

One more Question: is it allowed to Render the final Image with another Renderer or must we Render with ZBrush?

Hi, aurick, thanks for your Answer.

Rendering can be in another package. Keep in mind that the majority of the work on the project must be done in ZBrush. So if you render in another app you'll need to compensate in other ways within ZBrush.

In my concept I have a girl in a power ranger costume. So I wanted to know if this would violate the rule about using charters that are copyrighted? Because it is not actually a power ranger but clearly a girl in a cheep costume? :qu: Any thought and advice would be appreciated.

When I saw this contest on cgtalk I knew i just had to enter because my old tablet is a rather cheap one.

But I have one question :

In the discharge you said " Images may be 3D renders, 2D paintings, or a combination of both (thanks to ZBrush’s 2.5D technology)."

And in the rules you said "The majority of the effort put into creating the image should be done with ZBrush"

Well , I will do alot of the work in photoshop but I will also do some Detailing in ZBrush. Is that allowed?

60% or more of the work must be done in ZBrush in order for it to count as a majority. The more that is done in ZBrush, the better your chances of winning will be.

From your description, it does not sound like the majority of the work will be ZBrush. This would disqualify the entry.

Kind of a late question, I know, but I had a sort of "retrospective" idea...My scene will have some background items (knick-knacks, brick-a-brack, whatever you want to call it). Can I use a few of my old models as elements on shelves? Sort of a callback to some of my old pieces, or framed versions of past images as pictures on a wall??? They won't all be old items, just a couple for nostalgia.

Please let me know ASAP so I can either include them or make something new. Just in case you wonder, there are tons and tons of brand new items in the scene.

Thanks,

It's borderline, but I've just carefully gone over the rules again and what you want to do is permissable. Be sure to fully disclose which elements were included in this manner.
