View Full Version : Scared Silly by Yuri Vachutinsky
Greetings.
This is my first time taking part in such challenge (:
So, here's my first skatch:
kid1ko2.jpg
U all familliar with classic "kid scared by a monster under his bad", i'll try to make the opposite (:
I'll make it in zBrush.
All will be made by mouse, witch is the reason i want to win badly (:

hi, Really funny concept..& a nice sketch.
gud luck:lol:

Nice concept.. I would cover a little more of the underside of the bed with the blanket..
Maybe don't go with the spikes on the bed posts... they make the monster seem more aggressive than I think your going to want to portray. And give him a stuffed monster toy. Maybe he dropped it on the floor and the baby is reaching out to grab it..
Also you might try keeping the bed relatively straight... Currently it adds motion in an unnecessary manner.
I'll be following this one..
Brutikong
Thanks for advice, i'll bear it in mind, especially the toy idea. thanks (:
Thank you all, i'll work harder in order to not disappoint you (:
okay, i started with very raugh zsphere model.
87653479hf5.jpg
Then, by using standart, smooth, blob and snake hoock brushes i gave it some basic details:
firstjd8.jpg
Then i made a part of blanket just to see how will it look like. I made it from simple box.

Hey Klesh if you increase the resolution/subdivision of the eyes(spheres) the pixolation"jaggies you are seeing will diminish greatly.
I love the momsters expressions.
Looking forward to more.

Hi all (: I added the bed. Made in 3dmax7 and exported to zbrush.
i tried to make the bed as big as possible to show how lonely and defenseless he is, but also compact.

I dont like the eye's, but also i don't have any idea how to fix it...

That is really something! :)
Your sculpture is so close to your sketches it's just amazing, and really well carried out!
About the eyes. I like them! They're different, and I think they're pretty expressive as they are actually, bugging out and all. I'm thinking 'fear' when I look at the poor beast. I don't know what you might want to add to them for more expression. Perhaps some raised brows would emphasize more fear?
Anyway, really super work thus far! Amazing!
Keep it up, Yuri!

Thank you :)
Sooo, i added pupil's to the eye's. I think it's much better this way.

And i started the young one. Again very rough basic mesh made from zSpheres:

Hi.
Here i got some fresh new ideas:
I plan to make 2 more babies - one gnawing bed foot, and the other is climbing on the bed from the back (not too detailed, just silhouette and glowing eye's). (:

This is a really fun image. I love the concept. Looking forward to the finished image. Next year you should participate in the October Shadows art show.
A number of ZBrushers were in it this year. This image would be perfect for it.
monstermaker
Hehe, i have no idea what is this show :P
monstermaker
10-22-07, 05:55 PM
Yes ,a lot of people don't know about it . This was only the second year but there were about 60 artists participating in it. Scott Spencer did the Holloween Boy for it this year, His is the cool 3d print that made it to ZBC's top row.
If you go here http://www.creaturefeatures.com/info.html you can see who participated in it but ,the gallery of work isn't up yet. They tell me any day now it will be up. Basically it is an art show celebrating Halloween .
Sketch for background: window and whats behind it.

klesh you are an artisit as well and you are on the path of getting to higher levels which what all artists do no matter what level they are
for your image i think it is really cool i only would like it more if there is a lamp light in the room or something .. just to break the darkness and capturing more details from the models and it could be my personal opinion too.
good work and good luck.

10-30-07, 06:26 AM
Nice, very moonlit feel to it, great stuff. Perhaps a candle or night light could break up the foreground a bit to highlight your superb models ;)
Dondemaker
10-30-07, 07:47 AM
Great work Klesh - you have nothing to be embarassed about at all, your work is among the best in the competition. Maybe you don't have the experience of some of the ZB masters, but you have more than made up for it with your idea and the atmosphere. I agree with nightwoodwolf that you could put a little more light to highlight some detail, but don't overdo it - keep the moonlit feel, as shavedmonkey says. I also like the monochrome colour, but maybe a little use of colour in tints (a sort of half way effect) could be good. Keep it up, you are nearly there!
Jason
Thank's so much you all (:
I tried to fix the darkness.
I don't like the result... maybe because of the mess, or maybe cuz i liked the previous version too much ((:
Here it is:
lol2222222222.JPG
Klesh,
You definitely should keep posting, you know how to tell a story in a piece of art and though you might not feel your the best here(so many good pro's and what not here) you definitely show you have ability and willingness to make it grow. This work shows that and I am happy how it turned out along with how quickly you where able to put majority of it together. Really digging this last render with the added candle though it worked just fine without it, enjoyed em both, only thing that has really bugged me is the jaggedness around the painted pupil outer edge.
Keep up the great work, will be watching for more!! :tu: :tu:

I think you've done great work and I like the piece. Just remember that the deadline is November 2nd so you still have time to tweak and make a few corrections. I think it would be worth it.
If this may help, I could give you some suggestions.
I like the colors on everything except the bed and blanket. I think that's the reason why everything looks so dark. If you could change the color of the blanket to something warmer and lighter in color and then maybe change the color of the bed to resemble wood or stone, that would help.
I honestly don't think you need a window because it detracts from the scene. If you could make a stand of some kind for the candle and put it next to the bed, then use lighting to just light him enough to see him, the bed, and the children with slight illumination to show the cave walls would help.
Just a thought.

Looks good! the candle cured the problem of lighting. Well done!
This one really made me laugh!
One thing: I was not sure where the monster's face stopped and the blanket took over. You might think about changing the colour of the blanket a little bit to distinguish it from the creature.
Cheers,

Klesh, this work will be high ranked if you can fix your problems. ;)
Your modeling is amazing and superb.
The overall idea and composition is great, all characters are perfectly placed.
Your light-setup is OK, your problems are the lights and where to put darkness and slight brightness.;)
I would try this in your place:
First, change the skin-color of your monster back to the warmer reddish-tone you previously had. Let the baby-zombies in the green tones.
Then you get your needed contrast between the monster as the warm, living and 'good' element and the zombie-babies as the dead, evil ones.
In your latest attempt the main-baby under the bed has a much too bright face and the skin is too red for a zombie.
The light-reflection on the bed-sheet is much too bright.
So keep it up and you will have a top5 result at the end. ;)
Rastaman
Thanks (:
I didnt make them look like zombies, because it wasnt the idea in the first place (: I didnt want to make fundamental changes whan so close to the end. But thanks for constructional advice (:
I tried to follow most of the advices.
I did the best i could ((:
I hope i didnt disappoint you all.
This is the final version... i think. :P
THANK YOU ALL. I had lots of fun. GL!

That's a very nice final render. Changing the bed and blanket color really helped to lighten things and bring out some more detail.
I can't help but think of my 2 older brothers and my sister when I see those babies lol. Of coarse they weren't THAT evil, well maybe a little.
Good luck.
Didn't notice this thread before -- too many to keep track of! But I do love how it turned out. And let me add that the kid in the back chewing on the bed gave me an instant laugh.

This image has such strong features from it's own. Somehow it's one of a kind. You nailed the expression of the different characters, making me feel much sympathy for that little alien and hating those nasty babies. The image quality could be improved, but it's the content that counts the most, and has the most impact. Really nice! :tu: :tu:

ahhh the creepy babies multiplied since I seen it last. Man that is just sooo cool. Funny and scary. I think you nailed it right on the mark for this contest would love to see you win. good luck all though I think your pic is the only luck your gonna need. really awesome and frightfully funny pic.
Thanks to all. I'm very glad you all like it :)

Well, it's true. But i can say this is my first render in zBrush. I never did it before. (: I gained so much experience during this contest, that i can say i got level up :P

Wow, so much fellows you got there (:
I hope i'll make it to third prize :P Cuz drawing with mouse can be pretty painful sometimes (((:
Guess not. Pity -- you've done such a fine job with the mouse, I'd love to see what you can do with proper tools!
If it's any consolation, your entry is my desktop wallpaper now.

All done with a mouse! Wow, I had to do most of mine in my lunch breaks at work so I had to use a mouse there, but I at least had the chance to use my small tablet at home. you did very well in that case and I hope you manage to upgrade as I am sure your next image with the proper hardware would be utterly awsome (not that this one wasn't terrific! It was!!)
I know you struggled at the end, but you did well and deserved to be there in the top 3 for effort alone.
Well done
