View Full Version : Scared Silly Entry by Ralf Stumpf
SSDocu#1.jpg
Hello, I would like to participate in the challenge.
I have one or maybe two weeks time for this.
The idea: a "Halloween Night Corpse Ride"
A dead boy rides with his self made wooden car through the halloween night.
The notion is not complete yet, but I would like to make it as a halloween toy set.
I think about the design for the main character yet, I hope to start on monday.
I use my normal workflow for this: Maya and ZBrush for base meshes, ZBrush for detailing,
sculpting and rendering, PS for compositing and color correction. But I also try some new
techniques for this.
Hope you will like it. Good luck and fun for all challengers.
Cheers

Wouldn't it be wonderful to spend a week looking over Ralf Stumpf's shoulder as he works? Of all the artists on ZBC, I think you are one of my favorites because my personal style is cartoony...I'd much rather work on an animated picture such as Shrek or Monsters Inc than a "realistic" CG movie such as Pirates of the Caribbean. And Ralf's style is the ultimate in quality for that genre.
I really, really hope this is a non-entry, or that Ralf already has so many tablets that he doesn't want the prize. On the other hand, I'd like him to win so that he will have to teach us how he does some of this stuff. :D

Other Wordly and brilliant. Staggeringly inspiring and insurmountable work.
I hope one day you consider producing your own ZBrush videos. I don't think a written explaination can sufficiently capture your magic.

That's cool, I want one! ;)
Thanks for comments.
I start the dead boy character. I made the skull as a concept from a pole-less
sphere. Then I made a new topology to save poly's. I project the details on the
new topology and improve the form so that it has more a cartoon look.
The rip cage I start with a topology on a sphere then I convert this with a thickness
to an adaptive skin. In Maya I made the rest of the base mesh and go with this in
one part back to ZBrush. Hope you like it so far.

All very wonderful work. Stumpf - you are keeping us all very cleverly on tenderhooks here; we have seen so many great characters and bits and pieces but none of us knows how it's all going to fit together. And the landscape just adds to the curiosity. I suspect it'll all come together in a grand finale and we'll all be bowled over backwards. Until then... :tu:

....
What thu... Like Dondemaker said, you know it will be brilliant, but how... Leaving us mortals to ponder how this would fit. The edge of my chair sees a lot of my bum at the moment. :D
Hello again and thanks for your comments.
For the questions, I build not a complete landscape it is more like a set with the
right decoration in the right place. I render the parts in ZBrush as multi-pass
(seven to twenty different renders, mostly screen grabs with custom MatCaps)
and compose it with different layer settings in PS.
Here are some props more.
Hope you like it.

Hello, I would like to say first thank you for your support during the contest it was very fair and helpful.
Finally here is my contribution to the Scared Silly Contest 2007 on ZBC.
Work time for the project three weeks, two weeks modeling of the main characters and one week
modeling/rendering/composing/painting of the background. It was a lot of fun but also hard work
to get the final result. The whole project take 8GB on the hard disk, the main model has in the end
12 Million poly's and a size of 300MB. The base meshes are done in Maya and ZBrush. All digital
sculpting is done in ZBrush. Multi-pass rendering in ZBrush (seven to twenty render for the different
parts mostly sreengrabs with custom Matcaps one best rendering (shadow pass) per part). Render
size for the biggest part (dead boy with his ride, the blue rabbit, the worm and the pumpkin) is
5200x5200pixel. The whole composing and additional painting is done in Photoshop.
Hope you like it.
Cheers and Happy Halloween

incredible work, that is amazing.
Stumpf,
Definitely another Stumpf classic, really enjoy this entry among many of the others you guys put a tons of effort.. I hope others will realize all the effort put into each piece as well as how each entry followed the rules of the contest to make determinations for the potential winners.
Very sweet composition, well executed theme!! My only lil issue is.. the placement and look of the worm in regards to the motion displayed in this image. Doesn't seem to fit the dynamics going on with the rest of the main characters in the theme where he is placed in the scene. That said, great work as usual!! :tu: :tu:
(edited for the P.S.)
P.S. Is the worm coming out of a hole in the skull? If so hrmm guess wasn't to obvious to me but been giving this one second looks. Still think it could use some elements of motion to it. If not the body blowing some what in motion at least some small subtle ones with the antennae and mouth tendrils swaying.

I don't know if anyone addressed this yet but what will it take to get you to make a Gnomon or Digital Tutors DVD or video series for Gnomonology. I cannot measure the incredible amount of inspiration I receive whenever I look at your work (which is several times daily).
I worked as a penciller and inker for Marvel, DC and Image comics for 12 years. I had the privilege of meeting and working with some of the best artists in the industry including Mark Bagley, Ed Benes, Joe Madureira, John Romita Jr., Tim Townsend, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner and too many more to count. I still collect new comics every week because of my love of the art form. They are two different mediums but in my opinion no comic artist comes close to your level of expertise and creativity.
My hat is off to you sir. Please continue to grace us with your presence and provide for us your incredibly inspiring artistic endeavors.
Vince
P.S. And please, for the love of all that is holy, make a tutorial DVD, write a book or at least capture some video of you working in Z Brush and Maya!
