ZBrush Central admin this is a polite request to enable avatars in the ZBrush forums!!!!
I think it'd be cool to make our own avatars (profile pics for those who don't know) in ZBrush and use them right here!
PL :o EEEEAAAAASSSSSE!!!!! :p

Agree too. Although, in the User Options I can see "Profile Picture". What is that??
Also, under "Edit Profile", there is something called "ubb displayname". What is that?

I'm sorry to say, I enjoy the unpolluted visual atmosphere of these boards. The focus should be on the artwork, without any competing visual noise from garish sigs or avatars.

This is one of the cleanest, uncluttered sites of it's kind without things poppin up in your face, garrish gifs pootin and flashin everywhere and little things hitting each other.......other sites take longer to load each page cause the same zhit and ads...ads...ads have to load each time before the main content comes on!........avatars......hope not.

It's good to hear both sides of the argument. I actually didn't think of the 'clutter' that can come of avatars.
But I do tend to think that on more Arty sites, such as this, you get better and more creative avatars, rather than just the tacky avatars of most other sites.
Conceptart.org is a good example. the professionalism is higher and as such so are the avatars.
People here seem far more responsible (purely from the lack of swearing) and I think the avatars will follow suit.

I too must say I've always enjoyed the lack of Avatars on ZCentral. It really keeps the focus on the art itself, and saves space in the threads.
Just my opinion ofcourse. :)

Yeah, you know what. I'm starting to regret starting this thread. I just came from another forum site and my eyes are hurting from flashing gif avatars and bright colours.
By the way Plakkie, did you get my PM?
We considered both sides of this argument a long time ago. In addition to the "cons" that some of you have already listed above, there's the matter of copyright violations. A significant number of avatars that people post tend to be of copyrighted materials. We have no wish to become "avatar police". :)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts (on both sides of the issue)! No changes are planned at this time, however.
Thank God. ZBC has enough traffic slowing down page loads as it is.

Yeah, I feel kinda silly shouting off about it now. Now I know all the reasons not to have avatars, they far outway reasons to have 'em.
Please ignore this poor ranting fool
I was wrong on this one. ;)

Don't feel silly: it's good to ask questions and challenge conventions! It's also great if someone is able to change views in the light of reasonable arguments. :tu: Not everyone can do this, alas...
Found your PM and wrote an answer. :)

Ya I would not mind seeing avatars but ya I would not want to police them either. If there was so way of saying yes you can have avatars but only if you make them in Zbrush ;) now that would be cool. Ok now maybe that blue man monster thing would make a poor choice for a avatar his big $%W#$%# in the morning as I browse the Zbrush forums might be a little hard to explain at work when I'm showing off some good examples of Zbrush models to the classroom.
I wont hunt the link down, if you seen the model you know which one I'm talking about;)

Just got to figure out how to upload my avatar...... erm.....

There is
As of October 19, 2011 your bottom row icon will now also appear next to all of your ZBC posts, beneath your member name! This means that the exposure from sharing your artwork on ZBC will continue long after the bottom row icon has disappeared from the forum's main page.
insted of avatars.

yes I would like to be enlightened how this works - I see avatars next to some user's names... it seems like those are the user gallery images but others don't have any avatar next to their name though they do have a gallery full of pics... I'm confused

Hi Intervain,
It's the most recent bottom row icon that the artist has uploaded, within the last 30 days.
So users with a big gallery but no icon under their name are either:
1) Someone who hasn't posted in more than 30 days, or
2) Someone who has posted within the last 30 days but didn't create a bottom row icon for the post

I've already seen at least one person deliberately upload an icon that has nothing to do with any posted work in order to have a custom avatar.
If you are thinking of doing this, keep in mind it pushes someone's much more deserving thumbnail off the bottom row. People come here to view the great work that other people post here, and to get their own work noticed. There's a lot of competition for those slots, and everybody wants their time in the spotlight. I say without a hint of exaggeration, no one cares about your avatar.
I'd honestly rather see the avatars disabled entirely, than give people an incentive to game the system for such frivilous purposes.

You don't upload an avatar. It simply takes the thumbnail of the last pic you uploaded, if you made an icon as part of the upload process for the "recently uploaded" list. It lasts for 30 days, unless you upload another pic to your gallery.

Anyone can go to a thread we have commented on and see our lastest uploaded work in icon form. Not that I have uploaded something yet ;) (time for me to get working).
Besides, the bottom row icons have that "more" button and we can see all the uploads from the last several hours. I am always looking in there, and get to see much more work because of it.
I think not only does this method keep the artists latest work exposed for longer, but also gives the incentive to upload quality, not quantity as seen on some threads.

You must be misunderstanding in some way. I dont oppose the system in principle. This person uploaded an icon that had nothing to do with any work they had made (it was based on an image produced by another artist, and had nothing to do with Zbrush), just so they could have their stupid custom avatar that nobody except them cares about. Clicking on it linked to nothing, as they had presumably then deleted any display of the icon once it was uploaded to those slots.
In doing so, they pushed someone else off the bottom row thumbnails, which are worth much more in the way of click through than the extended "more" gallery. Everyone sees those thumbnails while they are up, on every visit to the site. Only a small percentage visit the extended gallery as frequently. Everybody who is interested in getting their work seen would prefer to be up there as long as possible.
I'm not saying it's a widespread problem, but if the system proves to encourage people to do this for their own vain, selfish motivations, I'd rather see the avatar function disabled entirely. Hopefully they can tweak the system so it doesn't reward this behavior, perhaps by deleting pics that aren't actively displayed, something which needs to happen anyway.

Yeah I see what you mean now. Valid point. What I would hope is that the mods of the forum will come down on people for that. Though they may not have the time.
It's always bugged me when people upload, then remove the upload and the image remains on the bottom row. If that happens it would be nice if it was removed from the bottom row too (and your avatar now) and the last person knocked off is bought back.
Sadly the system can be abused, but I do like the fact I can be chatting with long term acquaintances and check their avatar to see if they uploaded something new.
I dunno really. I like it overall.
I am sad people can abuse it, but hey, it's just the one or two that will do that hopefully.

@dustin
I agree with you, and very much like the idea that the avatars are tied to people's personal work, and not avatars for avatar's sake. As such, they are tied to the same guidelines against posting frivilous thumbnails as any icon, in that we should be respectful of other artists, and not load the bottom row with frivilous images, minor updates, or have multiple images up there at once.
My objection was to someone who was circumventing that for the purpose of vanity, in sort of self interested way that didn't respect the other artists.
And yes, I don't expect the mods to police everything. Pixologic is a small company, and the mods' time is stretched thin as it is. Which is why,*if* it became apparent this was going to be an issue, I'd just as soon deactivate the source of the temptation altogether, rather than expect the mods to have to monitor this.
