Hi everybody,
I realy don't know whether I will have any more time than to describe my idea because I will be out for holiday during mostly the whole contest-time, but in case it works, I would like to reserve my theme before anyone else does.;)
The idea:
Little Hannibal (Lector) is having his first Halloween ...........
Short description:
Hannibal is still a very cute little boy, the sunshine of his mom and grandma, but he has already a little stange taste.
So he is standing in front of an open door, smiling at a lady through his typical and famous face-mask.
The lady is offering him some candy while little hannibal hides a chop knife behind his back , waiting for the right moment to get from the lady the candy he really likes (and has already collected in a big bag from other neighbours he previously visited), her hand.

Using topology for the base-mesh of the mask:

The current state of progress:
Hannibal_1.jpg
Two spheres are added as subtools for the eyes, but I think I will only use them as placeholders. The eyes for the final rnder will be created in C4D and will consist of several layers for cornea, Iris etc. ZBrush is not so good for that, C4D creates eyes much better and quicker.
Also the base-mask is added as subtool. For creating the holes in the mask, I will have to switch to C4D because ZBrush cannot do this (I think).
Some more tweaking is needed for creating the right mimic that I want him to look. The hair will be later added in C4D.

Here is a short overview of how I principally constructed the head of hannibal:
This also shows some of the advantages / disadvantages ZBrush has compared to other apps when you use it completely from the very beginning.
Normally, I prefer to start with a base-mesh constructed in C4D or another app, because compared with the ZSphere-modelling-way, they give better control over the results.
ZSphere-modelling is indeed a great and very quick way, but when you first hit 'a' to preview the skin of a so far perfect looking ZSphere-construct, it's often more an 'Uuuuuhhhh' than an 'Aaaaahhhhh' :D .
But as Aurick demanded, I started this time from the scratch completely within ZBrush. Because of the little time I have for the whole thing, I decided not to use the new 'Topo-Mesh-over-ZSphere-Constructing-feature' but the 'old' way of simply using Tool -> Adaptive skin.
If your first preview looks like 'Uuuuuhhhhhhh' :td: , then you should first try to play with the settings in the Adaptive Skin menue. ;)
Here is what I used for my final base-mesh of Hannibal:
Adaptive_Skin-Settings.jpg
To have a good base-mesh with a clean topology-flow for all the later details, I placed ZSpheres at all the core-areas:
- Mouth
- Nose
- Eyes
- Ears
- Chin
The Ears contain 3 ZSpheres, one for the base as a connection to the head and two for the ears poles.
Every ZSphere leads to a new center for the topology-flow to provide you enough polygons for a detailed modelling, as you can see here:
(The mouth-zsphere is hidden inside the head-zsphere and not visible until you hit 'a' for the mesh-preview)

i dont know how to explain it right in english it just doesnt look right maybe u should bend the arm a little bit in the elbow. other than that great work! tough competition

OK, I know what you mean.
I choosed this straightened arm-pose to support the a shy-looking pose.
But if it looks wrong to all of you, I can change this.

Disco Stu, I think you were right.
I bent the elbow a litle bit and now it should look right.

Rastaman
10-28-07, 12:09 PM
Thanks.
Yes, I had the idea yesterday when I thought about that Hannibal should have had a pet beside him.
And what could be better than a freaky silenced lamb ?
The question was then how to realize the 'silenced' aspect.
A stitched mouth or something more wired ?
So I had the idea of the S&M-elements to make the lamb silenced.
The final lamb will be a bit like a mixture of a zombie-lamb with S&M-toys but still looking cute.

The Scared Pumpkin:
Made from a a ZBrush-Sphere, polypainted, rendered in Cinema4D (the only thing in this project that is rendered outside ZBrush):

I have finished a first result, but will try some other options before I decide which one to post finally here.
This is just a teaser of some parts of the final image (not the complete image itself, of coarse):

The final picture:
'Hanniballoween - the final cut'
This is only the small < 200 KB-Version, the original has 2000 x 2500 pixel and much more Details to see.
I will send it tomorrow to Aurick.
This work is ~95% ZBrush3.
All characteres except the house and the cloudy sky are made out of ZSpheres from scratch. The silencing lamb, Little Hannibal, the terrain and the gravestones are also ZBrush-rendered, only the 'Scared Pumpkin' is rendered in C4D V.10.1 with AR.
The House and the cloudy sky are based on free www-photos, then matte-painted in ZBrush3 to an basic background-layer.
The final composing was done with a frequent change between PaintShopPro 7 for the transparent-layer-work and Zbrush3 to matte-paint each arranged layer into the final picture.
So all the painting here is 100% Zbrush3.
A hard work with at least 2 whole nights work to get it done.
A very interesting and new thing for me was the use of ZBrush's 2D-Painting-features for this project.
First I created the basic background (house and sky) in ZBrush in a matte-painting-style, then I placed every (ZBrush-) rendered character and the terain in a seperate Layer inside PaintShopPro 7 and loaded every time the background + one layer as one .psd-file into ZBrush. Then I integrated the character with the ZBrush 2D-features into one picture, saved it and did the same procedure again and again until all layers were seamlessly integrated into one final picture.
Just for the records, as you can see in the final picture, I changed the theme a little bit compaired to my initial idea when it came to the final composition.
I played with some ideas and this seemed the best for me to fit all characters in an unusual and more dramatic constellation.
So the theme is now changed in:
Little Hannibal is having his first Halloween, so he and his silencing lamb invite you all to a special Halloween-party into his house.
No question that you are supposed to be the dinner, ha-ha ;)
Hope you like it.
Thanks for all the comments.
A scary & silly halloween to all,
Ralf Klostermann.
