This is going to be my first work post here in ZBrushCentral. Since I’ve always wanted a wacom tablet but wasn’t able to afford to buy one, I am going to WIN IT .. lol

OK guys, I wish the very best for everyone. This is really going to be fun. A big thanks for Pixologic for the amazing challenge opportunity. :tu:

Idea: Big, stupid, strong troll…..who decided to participate in Halloween scaring ppl standing , wearing a pink, lacy, women’s nightie ( this is his Halloween costume he think that’s scary) Looking into a hand mirror….SHOCKED at what he sees!!! The mirror’s image is a scary jack-o-lantern head laughing hard at him….The troll is confused about what he is seeing because he wants to be scary…not to be laughed at. :o

Hey nightwoodwolf, I like the concept, but I am not sure that it will clearly come across an single image. I am just not how people will no that he is tiring to be scary?

Hi, nice idea..Keep it up..:)

I like the idea, very funny indeed. Tell you what nightwoodwolf, in the far-far-fetched off-chance that I win this event and you don't finish in the top 3, I'll give you my old wacom.

It's stil fairly new and huge......toooooo huge. It's an Intuos 2 12 x 18 I think, but I'm sure that we all would love to have that Cintiq. That is if we can get Aurick to put it back in the box and stop playing with it.

That is if we can get Aurick to put it back in the box and stop playing with it.I'm not even gonna touch that.

Definitely sketch this one out, get a feel for the framing, and how much you can fit on the page. ie, if the hand-mirror is big enough in the frame for us to make out the laughing pumpkin, can we also see the trolls costume?

Also worth noting: the default jack-o-lantern face is a giant grin. It might be difficult to convey that this particular one is laughing. Likewise, you hear laughter with a pumpkin head, that brings up images of "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" -- so you also have to convey that the laughter is condescending; not maniacal.

(if one misses that last point, they might interpret your scene as the troll being shocked to learn that the headless horseman is about to kill him.)

...that said, I don't believe the rules specified it had to be a single image. If you need to make a three panel comic to get your point across, there's nothing stopping you.

i like your mind, this is a cool idea with lots of potential. are you going for some realistic elements or cartoonish. either way the concept is great.

nightwoodwolf
10-02-07, 03:47 PM
Harmonic- thanks for you input I am gonna do my best to make it a single image
Soulreaver : thank you.
-WOODY- : thanks for the offer and I wish you the best seriously.
Ctrl-Z : the laughing pumpkin id gonna be in the mirror, and hopefully , the troll’s facial expression and his body language are gonna convey that shocked angry kindda pissed off look, there will be an opened box next to his feet that has a sticker on the lower part of that says
“Troll’s Halloween Costume – made with love, Mama Troll”

and it is going to be written in trollish writing, haha

threetails : thank you, the only thing am not really sure about yet is if I am gonna make the whole thing cartoonish style or realistic.

nightwoodwolf
10-02-07, 03:52 PM
alright here I am going to start working on the troll first and posting the steps of the creation every now and then, I always start with a basemesh in Maya but for this particular project I am gonna use zsphere modeling and go from there.

thanks for your C&C

-WOODY-
10-04-07, 03:18 PM
Wow, I like the skin detail. It seems to fit him perfectly. I also like the pose except I can't help but feel like his head is a bit stiff.

Is there any way you could twist / tilt his head to match his movement?

I'm guessing you haven't reached that part yet cause you haven't finished detailing and texturing his head?

nightwoodwolf
10-04-07, 03:56 PM
fabritz : thank you .. we are all learning now matter how good we are.

-WOODY- : thanks and you are right i didnt touch the head, i was just seeing the body muscles and everything but the head, next i will work on the head and then start texturing him.

its gonna be my first time texturing in Zbrush for that i am excited, i am checking Scott Spencer poly painting video, great tutorial.

Looks alot like the LOTR Troll.. Is that intentional?

nightwoodwolf
10-05-07, 06:49 AM
Snowkaren : thank you.

Crazy Horse : thank you.

Brutikong : nope not intentional, this guy has muscle body structure kindda emphasized and more close to human like in his nails with his toes and hands, LOTR troll has more accumulated fat and folded skin, different legs, and I believe even taller, the LOTR Troll is always gonna no.1 of course they are the masters and the inspiration

Thank you.

ok I decided to take a lil break from our fat detailed troll and work on Jack, still work on progress on our beloved pumpkin head n' i thought of keeping you posted.

07_0_1_JackoL.jpg

here are the steps of the making … I started with a sphere converted to 3d of course n' I went from there sculpting a rough pumpkin without adding any facial features, just normal pumpkin .. then once I am satisfied with the overall look I started adding the face features.

07_0_2_MakingJackoL.jpg

nightwoodwolf
10-07-07, 04:21 AM
yes I didn’t finsh Jack-O-L head yet but I am one of those who like to roughly sketch what I have in mind even in 3d and also not get bored with one model ... so I decided to create the mirror without detailing it ( since Jack gonna be the reflection of the Troll in mirror remember !!? ) so I it would be nice to model the mirror and add it in the scene so the fast of imginging the idea and the pose would be easier and faster.

I created 2 alphas in Adobe Illustrator to use them in Zbrush .. here comes the powerful flexibility of Zbrush allowing you to sculpt and model in so many different ways, down I included both Alpha A and alpha B.

07_1_1_Alphas.jpg

after importing Alpha A to 3d and as you can see in the image, I used 256 Mesh resolution and Mesh Depth of 5 other settings left as default, I used the DragRec stroke with inflate Brush to draw Alpha B on the created mesh, and now i have my mirror ( without the stands ).

07_1_2_AlphaA_Mirror.jpg
07_1_3_AlphaB_Mirror.jpg

soon I am gonna create the mirror stands and detaling our yummy pumkin .. ops I mean Jack and keep you posted i better go eat something now i am hungry :D ….. hope you find this helpful for you, C & C are always welcome, thanks

-WOODY-
10-07-07, 06:55 AM
I like the way you did your pumpkin. I almost did mine that way, but I couldn't make up my mind how I wanted to go about it. A stylised pumpkin with facial features or an actual carved look. Your way probably is much better because since I used mesh extraction, I'm stuck with a high resolution mesh.

Your mirror is cool too.

nightwoodwolf
10-07-07, 07:42 AM
dustbin1_uk : glad you did find it useful .. good luck.
Intervain : thank you.
soulreaver :thank you.
-WOODY- : I kindda struggled myself with facial expression, I sculpted about 4 or 5 n’ i wasn’t really satisfied with how the laughing face coming out, some of them was cool but didn’t maintain the scary look or in better words the EVIL look in the eyes while laughing, for now I am staying with this one till we see how it goes, good luck with your project. :tu:

I got am email asking me about the pumpkin material, I created both colored spheres in Maya, anyway, I am not sure how it works here but I noticed zipped files are acceptable to upload !!

ok I know the idea says hand mirror but I decided to create a big mirror where I can show more of jack-o-lantern reflection, I might go for half body reflection of jack instead of his face only, and maybe its gonna be kindda embossed like reflection .. still not sure.

I hope that slight concept change doesn’t violate the rules of the contest !!

nightwoodwolf
10-10-07, 03:11 PM
our troll now got his nightie and he is wearing it, i used the topology tool to create the nightie, still trying to decide what color/texture for the nightie fits him, also worked on Jack's body and gave him more evil sarcastic laugh and placed him in the mirror.

O.K. I'm glad I found the time to work today. I created the clothes box that his mom is going to send the nightie in. I must say it was really harder than I thought to model the box and all the pieces without basemeshes in maya.

I had to start with primatives from zbrush and use the Deformations a lot. there were no zspheres involved except for the handles, still WIP.

snowkaren : I will show more of texturing workflow with images soon, quick and short, I start with dark color on the model and of course that dark color is close to the final texture overall color then I add more details to the skin with different alphas using spray stroke, DragRec and free hand stroke ( low rgb intensity ) those alphas may n may not contain different colors, and after I get the skin color variation close to what I want I mask the model using Mask by Alpha and add more details on some places.

KOSOVA :thank you.

Here are some images of the textured version of the box, c&c welcome, thanks.

Just an idea, could/could-not work, maybe too show that he will be trick or treating, have him in a 2 story or so house, and you can see kids out the window trick or treating down the street, and maybe place his lolli bucket next to him on the floor or something. just an idea :), look forward to the finished piece.

You could extract some of those tendrils from the mesh and make them stand out beyond the surface a bit.

Add to that, some corkscrewy tendrils here and there might be nice.

as i mentioned before things are really busy here on my end hope it wont stop me from finshing with you guys, 30 minutes ago i was free and i decided i should sculpt the cave that the troll gonna be in with jack and the mirror, i started with plane3D in Zbrush and inflated some places then created some alphas in photoshop to detail the wall, due to my lack of experiance with rendering in Zbrush i decided to render the final image in Maya and use photoshop for compsiting.

thanks every one .. and good luck

alright ... i needed to put everything together to see how would the final image look like, here it is so far with some basic lighting, i decided to model 1 or 2 framed pictures to hang them on the cave's wall, just to give the impression of thats where he lives, i will also sculpt some fast rocks to scatter here and there around the cave, also i am thinking of some kind of rays coming from the above with some sparks with the light, alot of ideas and we are running out of time

comments and crits are welcome and good luck everyone :tu:

Rory_L

It's coming together well now, but you still need to make the dress sillier if you want us to get why Jack's laughing at the troll. As is, it could be that this pumpkin just finds all trolls innately laughable.

I thought it was to be a pink nightie, wasn't it?

Cheers,

R

dustbin1_uk
10-24-07, 07:06 AM
Ah! that's the shot we were all waiting for! Looking great!

One or two things I'd consider. Maybe withdraw the camera a bit? You may also want to rotate the Troll slightly round to the Camera so you can see his expresion. Maybe mirror ('scuse the pun, not intended) the pumpkin dudes body the other way? His nearest arm seems to cover alot of him up.
Even so this is looking cool! Well Done!

LittleDedder
10-24-07, 09:30 AM
Just something to try if you built the geometry.

Maybe a little more of an over the sholder on Jack so we sort of take Jack's perspective and see what a silly sight the troll is.

nightwoodwolf
10-24-07, 10:24 AM
Rory_L : thank you, yes the nightie suppose to be pink but the current color fits the scene colors better and for sure i will add more details to the nightie hopfuly soon.

dustbin1_uk : i agree with you the camera should take a better place but its kindda hard to show both of their faces with one single camera shot, we'll see, thank you very much.

LittleDedder : you'll get it with the next render :) thanks

guys all of your comments are really being a source of inspiration to a better render, thank you and good luck all :tu:

here is a little update with the lighting and added some rocks around the scene, i'll show the making of the rocks next post.

I think you need to cheat the camera a little more. Meaning, rotate the mirror and the troll so that they're much closer to facing us. Remember, this is comedy -- you can break a couple of rules.

In fact, if it grants you a more flattering angle on both of your characters, consider making it a moment later -- the troll, hurt and confused, stumbles away from the mirror and looks to us for validation. (Why pumpkin man laughing? Troll look pretty, yes?)

I think that would grant you a more dynamic shot, and allow you to crop in much closer.

In any case, I'd encourage you to render a handful of composition tests and ask the group for feedback before you finalize anything.

(I say much of this because the individual character renders were so good)

Sorry I didn't explain what I meant too well in my last post. I'd take the body of the pumpkin dude, and mirror it, meaning the left hand becomes the right and visa versa, the deformation menu should enable you to do this, and just see how it looks.

Then just rotate the troll a little towards the camera so you can see his expression better.

After seeing the second light test I take back about pulling the camera back, I think it is positioned fine.

Other than that, no other crits to offer. Maybe a few more flowers on the dress for comedy's sake. :D ;)

It's a winning peace man, I'm torn between this and one maybe two others. :tu:

Like Ctl-Z said, make a few low res composition shots and let us help you choose, I've found when staring at one peace for hours on end I loose perspective on it and often find showing others means they look at it 'fresh' and see something you didn't through simple over exposure to it.

Dustin, just wanted to add a little something, hope you don`t mind, but I would work a little more on the pumkins hand maybe stretch it into a pose that will show the silloute of the hand a little better and maybe scale the hand just a little to show more emphasis on it... looking great by the way :)

Oh yeah I love the way you created the pumpkin very nice!

sasquatchpoacher : thank you.

Ctrl-Z : i wish i have the time for more than one composition really, but i really started to like your idea about him looking at the camera ( the troll ), i also agree with the individual render for the characters but they were in show poses if you know what i mean, now they are in the scene and they have to follow the lights in the scene, thanks for your great input. :tu:

dustbin1_uk : thank you pal your comments always helpful, i like your concept very much.

squeige : very interesting input, thank you .. i'll work on it.

well guys all of your feedback is really helpful, i like how we all learning from each other here in this contest, which is not something new in ZBC, thanks everyone ... and very good luck :tu:

Agreed! The changes are subtle, but make a world of difference. Quite striking to compare.

Sweet render on the last one, night...I was going to suggest the same thing that Ctrl-Z said...the facial expressions you made for the characters are so good that it was a shame to lose some of that in the positioning. This is not real life, so turning them to the viewer more is fine...and you did it just great in this last post. I'm thinking about not offering any crits for you, this is just too good and I'm trying to win as well! :D :D

Your modeling looks good nightwoodwolf. I also like the lighting and dust effects in the light rays.

The only crit I have is the scene in relation to the character layouts. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing from what you said is that maybe your models are already stuck to the canvas?

If not, then the suggestion I had was to maybe move the 2 main characters a bit closer together under the main light in front of the chest and crop the width of your render to better focus your attention on them. It's a good setup, but I think that becuase of all the other space around them, your eye tends to wonder around elsewhere in the room.

I'd like the flower pattern to be bolder, more instantly visible. There shouldn't be anything subtle about the dress!

Cheers,

It's all come together very well. The point is clearly made; and the over all colouring balance is appealing, with the red dress being echoed in the pumpkin's head.

Best of luck!

Great work. Everything works well together and I agree that the letter helps to make the humour immediately clear. This looks like it might be your final render? Best of luck,

Hey Nightwolf!

Now the forums are open again and the competition is over, I just wanted to say that it was very entertaining seeing your amazing picture come together. You really did well and I loved the feel of the whole thing. It was very Terry Pratchett in it's feel and I guess that's why I liked it so much.

Shame it wasn't in the top 3. It deserved to be for the effort and skill you put in, and you also showed us in detail how you made this image.

Well done.
