Hey everyone, this is my Scared Silly concept sketch. I am calling it “Where Candy Corn Comes From”. The sketch was started in Photoshop and finished in Zbrush.
I plan to start modeling the characters tomorrow and hopefully post some wips.
Comments and critiques welcome! :)

faster than a speeding bullet..... so is the candy coming from the scarecrows bum ?... now that would be scarey... nice start dude

Eddie Ellis, I couldn’t sleep last night  so I figured I might as well get to work on this, and yes the candy corn is coming from the scarecrows bum.

Here is my first wip, the boy in the cow costume, I have been having a lot of fun modeling him. I haven’t done cartoony stuff before, but I really like it. Its nice not to worry about anatomy for a change.

Everything modeled in Zbrush mostly form Zspheres, the head was made from a head base that I made from ZS and re-topoed, and the bucket was make from primitives. I used Marcus Civis’s zscrip “change res” for the hands.

Critiques and comets welcome! :)

Here is a wip of the scarecrows head, made from Zshperes, with a bit of poly painting.
This forums is pretty quiet, everyone must be working on there concept, :qu: trying to come up with something better than poop jokes.

Wow! now that's cool, and already this far too!

Not only is one of the kids mostly done but that pumpkin looks amazing!:tu:

After seeing this, I can see this is going to be one tough competition!!!

Well done so far! :D

Hey thanks for your comments!

dustbin1_uk, Thanks!

Moochie, Thanks, glad you like the cow, I modeled it first because I really thought it would be fun/funny.

marcus_civis, thanks, You can never have too many Teats!

Bingo_Jackson, don’t feel to discouraged, your idea rocks. :tu: I have allot of free time right now, so the timing is prefect for me, I also have not been able to sleep, so that has helped, but isn’t always fun.

Here is a wip of the candy pooing scarecrow. Originally I thought my concept was pretty random but if you think about it, it all makes sense. The scarecrow is in the corn field all day eating corn. The corn is transformed inside of him by the magic of Halloween and presto! He poos out candy corn for all to enjoy! Makes sense Right?

PS. I hate candy corn!

Harmonic,

Interesting idea/concept.. slightly disturbing but in a good way ;) . Enjoying the 3D elements you've posted they look very sweet! Be interesting to see them layed out in the composition. I praise your enthusiasm and pace on finishing your theme!!

One small idea would be to have the "candy corn" trickling down and hitting the pile on the ground maybe a few pieces bouncing into the air as it hits the "pile" as it is ehem pouring form the scarecrow. Its what hit me when viewing your latest update of the full version scare crow, just food for thought friend, keep up the great work!! :tu: :tu:

Wow! Good work so far! Hey wait a min...... i used to have a shirt like that!

Well done, amazing modeling work. I think the shirt needs to be toned down a bit, but I guess it's too early to tell.

Just so you know, I'm rooting for this one to win one of the prizes. :tu: :D :tu:

Thanks for your comments everyone.

AngelJ thanks, "One small idea would be to have the "candy corn" trickling down and hitting the pile" I had thought about that but I was worried that would be a little to nasty. I will have to give it a try and see. It would certainly drive the point home.

dustbin1_uk , Um ya I was planning to give the shirt back after the completion. I agree it looks a bit off I need to tone it down and ruff it up a bit, also the way it is painted now , an of the sculpted detail is washed out. I would love to win one of the prizes thanks man.

threetails thanks!

WOODY- this coming from a guy who has something about running over poo with the lawn mower in there signature! I bet you can relate.

Marsyas thanks.

Here is a wip of the pug in the tutu, I am finally starting to like the way the tutu is looking.

Marsyas thanks, it took some experimenting to get that effect. I used the good old mask by intensity and hide point trick.

Alliecat 08 Thanks!

Here is my next wip the kid in the mummy costume, his costume has been allot of work. It's not quite there yet but its getting there. I think I will make the faces of all the charters a bit more cartoony after I get them all molded.

you got tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. thanks. love the cow costume and the pug. the scare crow is great. love the idea of the candy corn poop lol, I hate candy corn it gives me a headache and now I know why lol. the shirt is a little loud, if you have Photoshop I can tell you how to make a flannel texture if you want it. pm me if you do. good luck on the contest but I suspect you don't need it.:D

sirquadalot, glad Im not the only one who appreciates some good poop humor! and I definitely agree about the cow being to glossy.

Slosh, Thank you! The mummy was so much work! I didn't ever want to look at it again after I posted that wip. I am really glad you like him.

billrobertson42 thanks, yeah I think most dogs are opposed to that sort of thing.

rabia thanks, I am very interested to see what the final will look like too, and how I am going to manage all the materials an objects!

animastur glad you like the pug, and I agree the eyes need more secular.

KOSOVA thanks!

Next wip the woman in the witch costume. I have been have a really hard time with her, I will need to retop, her poll count is really high and my computer is slowing way down, but I cant get enough detail in the face . But for now I just don't want to look at her any more!

Have you tried locally subdividing the head area? Also, with zspheres you can set the xyz res higher for the head zsphere.

Harmonic
10-13-07, 06:17 PM
Thanks for the suggestion Marsyas, I didnt think of local subdivision. I Tried adding edge loops but it gave me really funky results. I ended up cuting her head off. But in 3.1 when you hide part of the model and delete the hidden parts is smooths all of your detail out. Does any one know if there is a way to avoid this? :qu: :qu:

Next wip the girl in the power ranger costume.

Sickly funny!

Try rotating the scarecrow's head directly to face us, ****ing it to one side, as if to say, "What are you looking at?" At the moment, its pose is all rather foursquare, a bit rigid.

"But in 3.1 when you hide part of the model and delete the hidden parts is smooths all of your detail out. Does any one know if there is a way to avoid this? :qu: :qu: "

Hide the parts you want to delete. At the highest subdivision level mask the visible polys. Return to the lowest level and delete the hidden ones.

Cheers,

R

Rory_L, you are right about the scarecrows pose, I will work on it a bit. I was also thinks of having him wink at the camera. And thank you so much for the masking tip, it works great. That problem was driving me nuts!

More pre viz, worked on the bush and painted in the background a bit, still trying to see how it all fits together.
I might exaggerate the characters proportions and silhouettes.

I'm thinking it might be dynamic if you make the scarecrow character much larger. We might not even need to see his entire body. Make it so he's kind if having a private moment with the viewer and the rest of the scene is taking place more in the background. Really play up the expression on his face, like he's sharing a private joke.... Looking good :tu:

dustbin1_uk
10-15-07, 02:25 AM
You've done a fantastic job of this and I can see this is going to be an amazing peace of work when done.

I have noticed a couple of things:
The woman at the door in the witches hat, her arm looks like it's bending in the wrong place. maybe it's not long enough in the forearm. And possibly cow kids and mummy boy's hands are a bit too ridged, they need to loosen up a bit.

Other than that, amazing work, can't wait for the final render. :tu::D:tu:

sirquadalot
10-15-07, 05:55 AM
I love the kid sniffing the candy... that is frickin hilarious! One thing about the composition of your scene...The perspective you painted for the background feels a little off. It seems like the sidewalk should not rise that high vertically. Not shure though, try using the plane 3D with perspective turned on to set up your ground plane. Looking forward to your final composition!:D

Rory_L
10-15-07, 07:14 AM
Coming on nicely!

American avenues generaly run dead straight, but for compositional purposes, wouldn't it be better for the road to curve off away to the left? You could then have an even lower angle of view, without having to show an infinity of houses.

Swinging the camera around to the left would bring the scaarecrow closer to us and more dominant in the scene. With him crouching, you should still be able to see the witch over the top of the hedge and the fact that only we can see Jack would be clearer.

Have you thought how to light this? I might like to have the scene lit only by the light escaping from the doorway, knifing horizontally across the middle of the stage; with the children lit from the side by this and fill lit by the sweets on the ground. The scarecrow would be lit dramatically from below by his own pile.

Cheers,

R

Thanks for your comments and suggestions! They have been really helpful.

Rory_L, a friend of mine gave me almost the exact same suggestion on lighting the seen, so I figured I better try it!

Here is where I am now, still mostly focusing on camera angle, composition and lighting. I haven't fixed any of the pose problems yet. I want to get a clear idea of what will be seen in the shot before I do nay more modeling so I don't waste more time on things that wont be visible in the final image.

Feedback and suggestions Welcome!

I still suggest making the scarecrow larger - creating more contrast with him as the first thing the eye goes to and then allowing the background scene to be more in the background. When you get around to posing him, I think you might want to really go for it and put him in a more dynamic squat that really shows what he's up to. Perhaps he's squatting kind of sideways and we see one hand reaching around with the mummy toilet paper. Or maybe just a more natural version of the position he's in now. However he's posed, you might try turning his head so he's looking right into the camera and has a more exaggeratedly mischievous smile on his face. I'm nitpicking here though - you've already done a great job of realizing your original concept. Love what you've done with the lighting. Could definitely be a winner.

fizzy, yes I am rendering in Zbrush, my final will be Zbrush + Photoshop.

Putting this all together has been quite the challenge, I spent many hours pacing everything in layer in zbrush in all large document, but I couldn't get them to merge without loosing information. So getting my render passes has been quite difficult. I have also been spending allot of time on details, refining characters, making candy for the bowl, making eyebrows, buttons and hair Tweaking textures.

Anyhow next wip. Still needs work but I wanted to get it up in hopes of getting last minut crtis before sending in my final. So if you have any comments or critiques please let me have em! :ex:

Very sweet, really enjoy this one again. Hey the trickling down corn like we talked about sweet hehe. Mummy appearance tons better. I really liked this concept and now I can say I enjoy how it turned out here!!!! Keep up the great work!! :tu: :tu:

Only thing that kinda seems a tad odd is the dog appears kinda floating?

Rory_L
10-31-07, 02:49 AM
Turned out well didn't it?

The composition is much better now with the tighter focus. There's nothing in the rules that says what proportions the images should take, so my recommendation would be to lift the top border to allow us to see Mum's hat again.

Also, if you do have a little time spare, you might add a subtle wood grain texture to the clapboard wall. As is, it's just a little bare and fills up a lot of the picture with its bareness.

If you have the opportunity, try seeing what the pic looks like on another monitor. Darker or lighter, you might want to adjust contrast.

Cheers,

R

Harmonic I know what you're saying about issues. It's mamaizing when you have a deadline how many problems seem to arise.

To be honest Zbrush has been pretty rock solid for me, I've only had problems when I've taken my mesh to over 7 million. The real headache for me has been trying to render the scene in an outside package. I won't go into details on your thread but it's been a real nightmare. Just hoping it I can get everything done in time as it's caused so many delays.

Anyway I'm waffling, again well done love this work.

AngelJ Thanks, I think it was you who suggested the candy corn trickling down, great suggestion. And thanks for the crit on the dog :tu:

Rory_L thank for your suggestions. I added a bit of wood grain. I had wanted to have the witch hat in there but it seemed I would have so much dead space at the top.

fizzy, I didn't do a great job of fully describing what was going on, but I am glad it is clear now

dustbin1_uk Thanks, I really appreciate that.

Marsyas Thanks, the way I had the light roughed in in PS made it really blurry and I actually did use the Unsharp Mask filter on his face. :)

I think it looks great! Well done.

You are rendering this without perspective on aren't you? If so and it's not a big thing, but the roadside grassy edge seems to widen as it goes into the distance. If turning perspective on won't damage the composition in any way, doing so might not be a bad idea.

Again, congrats! :D
