Did you make the gear in zbrush or was it made externally?

Externally, 3d Max

Yeah that's what I thought. Do you happen to have any experience with, or know of ways to achieve those hard stream-lined edges by simply sculpting it in directly in zbrush?

You could, but sometimes its just easier to create something in a different package and bring it in to Zbrush.
