I was experimenting with those high-res Earth maps and a Lunar map I found.

WOW!!!!!!! tell us about how you made the mushroom cloud....I love where this piece is going for sure.....
Awesome job! The composition is really effective, and nicely balanced.
I think the lunar map that you used is actually too detailed for the size of the moon. You can't see any of the features that should be readily visible.

Wicked wicked wicked!!!! That must have been one helluva nuke or meteor! Booooom!!!! I see you did the same alpha bumping on the earth as I did in my ATLAS image. Excellent work! The color contrast is exceptional. :tu: :tu:

Absolutely fantastic :tu: :tu: :tu:

its cool how you can see that the reddish light from the explosion is reflecting off of the moon sorta
Nice work, a very unique image.

Thanks all for your replies.
Actually, rather than use an alpha map, what I did was use a material where I made the color bump value slightly negative (light areas raised, dark areas lower).
As far as how I did the mushroom cloud, first I modelled a basic mushroom cloud shape out of a sphere and I placed that on the Earth's surface and marked it. I also used a yellowish-orange glow matterial with noise turned up and a noise size of about 2 or 3. I also used a bunch of flattended toruses for the shockwaves. I used the snakehook tool to draw the trails behind the shockwaves. Also for the outer shockwaves I used the sphere tool with the freehand stroke turned on on covered up the two outermost toruses with little spheres and then I used the smudge brush on it. For the torus around the middle of the mushroom cloud I turned the noise up a bit in the deformation pallette and I turned RGB add down a bit on the draw menu when I drew that torus. I then used a darker red glow material and added some strokes with the speckle alpha here in there. In the Earth layer, I simply darkened the surface of the Earth and then I used one of the glow materials again on some parts of the Earth surface.
I'll try to work on a script tonight, because it might be a little clearer than my long-winded paragraph. :)
A script! Thank you!!We get to peek over your shoulder now :)
Ive not seen anything like that explosion done in Z before, it is exellent
