Sorry to ask such a "newbie" question: :o
Is it true that Zbrush can't save/read object in JPG, GIF format?

Yes. ZBrush will import and export BMP, PSD, and (for Mac users), PICT. It will also import JPG, but not export it. (JPG by its very nature creates artifacts in the image, but also allows you to control how much compression takes place. As a result, it's best to convert to JPG using a dedicated image editor so that you can determine how much artifacting you're willing to live with for your current needs.) GIF is not supported at all.
