How effective is this? I had tried painting a differnt material onto the lips of my models to give them a wet look, but the edge of the material I just painted shows up as a black outline. Is there any way to avoid this so that the new material blends together with the original material? Thanks for the help!

What you should try is saving the material you are using, then select a material you're not going to use in your palette, and load the one you saved into this slot...You can now add specularity to the new material without changing the material in your piece, and use this for the lips...Since it is the same material, only shinier, it will blend. You can also alter the way you apply the material by changing the settings in your 'Draw' palette, and by changing the various settings, such as ZIntensity...
Hope this helps...

if ya only have the demo, like me, just find a material that is similar and alter it to be the same. then follow SC's steps.

When you do this, is the material that gets replaced lost? Or does it come back the next time you start ZBrush?

Everytime you start with all the materials back...If you've replaced materials, they come in with your document when you load it. They are only changed for that doc.

materials are restored when Zbrush is restarted. This is the same with tools and Zgraphs and stroke seetings and textures and a lot of other things. THey go back to defualt setiings. You must have the full version to save tools and materials. you can initialize(restart) Zbrush under the Preference Menu also. (edit) Stonecutter, you posted just 2 min before me. sorry bout that. i was typin as you posted.
Stonecutter covered it perfectly!
